The 4 Best Beaches in Holbox + 1 Hidden Gem (2025)
When it comes to beaches in the Yucatán, there’s always been a bit of a debate about who takes the crown, is it Cancún or Isla Mujeres? (We can all agree it’s definitely not Tulum anymore.)
But honestly? I think some of the best beaches are on Isla Holbox, maybe tied with Isla Mujeres if I’m being generous.
The beaches in Holbox are absolutely stunning. The sand is blindingly white, the water is crystal clear, and best of all, there’s actually space to lay down your towel without someone trying to charge you for it. No endless rows of beach clubs or “private” resort sections, just open stretches of sand and turquoise water.
I’ve been to Holbox a few times now, and some of my favorite beach days in all of Mexico have been right here. So, if you’re planning a trip and wondering where to find the best beaches, I’ve put together this quick guide to the best beaches in Holbox, plus one hidden gem that’s absolutely worth the walk.

Best Beaches in Holbox – My Experience
I’ve been to Holbox a few times now, with my very first visit being over five years ago, which feels like a lifetime ago, honestly. Back then, the beaches were almost completely empty, with just a few wooden shacks scattered around. It had this raw, low-key island vibe that I absolutely loved.
When I visited again recently, I could definitely tell how much has changed. There are now way more beachfront restaurants, boutique hotels, and beach clubs popping up everywhere. It still has its charm, but I can’t help but wonder how much longer Holbox will keep that underdog, untouched feel before it goes the way of Tulum.
That said, Holbox still has some of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen. The sand is powdery white, the water crystal clear, it’s the kind of place where I can just throw down my towel, grab a margarita and some fresh mango from a beach shack, and call it a perfect day.
A little disclaimer though: I definitely got lucky with the weather. Conditions can change, seaweed sometimes drifts in, and not every day is postcard-perfect. But when the stars align, Holbox definitely delivers those Caribbean beach vibes that make you fall completely in love with the island.

1.Playa Holbox // Best Beach in Holbox
Number one on this list, and honestly the only beach I really need for daily lounging, is Playa Holbox. Most of the other beaches are a bit more of an adventure to get to, so if you’re just after an easy, beautiful spot to relax, this is the one.
When I talk about Holbox’s incredible beaches with crystal-clear water and soft white sand, I’m talking about Playa Holbox, the island’s main beach.
Every beach in Holbox is public, so you can lay your towel down literally anywhere. I usually switch it up between stretching out right on the sand or heading to one of the beachfront restaurants or beach clubs.
If I’m after peace and quiet, I walk a little further down the beach away from town (towards Punta Mosquito), where it gets more relaxed. But when I’m in the mood for a margarita and good food, I always end up at La Playa de Nana which is my absolute favorite beach restaurant on the island.
They don’t charge for their sunbeds, just a minimum spend of 600 MXN per person, which I have zero problem hitting with lunch, beers, and a few cocktails. It’s the perfect island spot, it’s laid-back, breezy, and miles away from any kind of resort-town vibe.

2. Playa Punta Cocos // One of the Best Isla Holbox Beaches for Sunset
Playa Punta Cocos is my second favorite beach on the island, tucked away at the very southern tip of Holbox.
It’s the perfect spot if you’re craving a more untouched, castaway kind of vibe. The last time I went, there was just one little beach shack selling cold beers and margaritas, a few hammocks swaying in the breeze, and not much else and that’s exactly what I love about it. It feels rugged, quiet, and refreshingly non-touristy.
I don’t usually spend full days here (I tend to hang out at Playa Holbox during the day), but it’s absolutely worth the trip, especially if you rent a golf cart or at least a bike, since it’s a bit of a trek from town.
Most of the times I’ve visited Punta Cocos were for sunset and bioluminescence, and honestly, it doesn’t get much better. It’s one of the best sunset spots on the island, and once it gets dark, you can see the glowing bioluminescence both in the ocean and in the small inlet behind the beach. It’s pure magic.

3. Playa Punta Mosquito
Punta Mosquito is easily one of the most stunning parts of Holbox, truly one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. That said, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it for a lazy beach day; it’s more of a sightseeing or day-trip kind of spot.
Located at the very northern tip of Holbox, the only way to reach Punta Mosquito is by boat or by walking along the beach for over an hour. I’ve done the walk once myself, and while it was long (and hot!), it was absolutely worth it.
The entire stretch is breathtaking, an endless beach, crystal-clear water, and not a single hotel or restaurant in sight since it’s all part of a nature reserve.
The beach itself is stunning, with a wide sandbank and that impossibly turquoise water that makes you question whether it’s even real. It’s easily one of the most beautiful parts of Holbox, and I highly recommend going if you’re up for the walk.
A few tips: bring a hat, pack plenty of water, and don’t underestimate the heat. You can also save some time by parking your golf cart at Hotel Las Nubes de Holbox (a lovely little boutique hotel worth checking out) and walking from there.

4. Cabo Castoche
Cabo Catoche is another stunning spot near Holbox and one of those beaches that could easily be the most beautiful on the island. It’s massive, endless white sand, turquoise water, and a tiny beach shack with hammocks strung between palm trees (it’s honestly proper castaway vibes).
The only downside is that it’s only accessible by boat. You can book a boat tour out to Cabo Catoche, and most include lunch right on the beach, usually guacamole, ceviche, and cold drinks, basically the perfect tropical day trip.
I actually haven’t done this one myself yet, but I met a few people who did, and they absolutely loved it. So maybe you can try it and let me know how it goes, I’ll definitely be adding it to my Holbox list for next time. I’ll link some of the best boat tours below so you can see if it’s something you’d enjoy.

5. Casa Blanca (Hidden Gem)
And last but definitely not least, my little hidden gem: Casa Blanca. Despite being marked on Google Maps as a tourist attraction, I’m pretty sure it’s actually someone’s private residence… though I’ve never seen anyone home.
The whole area around it is stunning with palm trees right on the beach, soft sand, and not a soul in sight most of the time. I usually grab my own coconut from one of the low-hanging palms and crack it open on the rocks (tastes even better when it’s self-earned, right?).
There’s a small patch of beach here where it’s often completely empty, and the sunsets are absolutely beautiful. It’s a little off the beaten path and not your typical beach spot, but that’s exactly why I love it.
FAQs About the Best Beach in Holbox
Are there good beaches on Holbox Island?
Yes, absolutely. Holbox has some of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico, including Playa Holbox, Punta Cocos, and Punta Mosquito. The sand is soft and white, the water is clear and shallow, and it still feels wonderfully relaxed compared to other parts of the Yucatán.
Is Holbox worth visiting?
For me, 100% yes. I love Holbox because it still has that rugged, island feel, no paved roads, no cars, just sandy paths and golf carts. It’s not for everyone (it’s definitely a little rustic), but that’s exactly what makes it so special.
Are there beach clubs in Holbox?
Yes, though not in an over-the-top Tulum kind of way, which is honestly a good thing. Holbox has plenty of charming beachfront restaurants with sunbeds, great drinks, and a more laid-back vibe. My personal favorite is La Playa de Nana, the food is delicious, the margaritas are strong, and the atmosphere is just right.
How do you get to Holbox?
The easiest way is to catch an ADO bus or private shuttle from Cancún Airport to Chiquilá, then take the ferry across to Holbox. Alternatively, if you’re feeling fancy, you can charter a private plane directly from Cancún to the island.
Final Thoughts on the Best Holbox Beaches
To wrap this up, I really do think the beaches in Holbox are incredible. Wide stretches of soft white sand, clear turquoise water, and low-key beach restaurants instead of massive resorts, it’s everything I want in an island escape.
That said, Playa Holbox is the main beach where you’ll spend most of your days. I don’t mind that, but if you’re after more variety, just know that the island’s other beaches take a bit of effort to reach. Also, keep in mind that sargassum seaweed can show up at certain times of year (usually between April and November), so plan your trip accordingly.
I hope this little guide on the best beaches in Holbox helps you get a feel for what to expect and if you’re wondering whether it’s worth visiting, the answer is an easy yes.
