The 12 BEST Restaurants Bacalar: Our Favorite Spots + Local Classics

Last Updated on April 10, 2025 by Oliver

I’ve now been to Bacalar more times than I can count. Oliver and I first landed there in 2022, just a couple of freshly-met backpackers on the kind of budget that screamed “tacos or bust.” (Spoiler: it was mostly tacos. So many tacos.) We managed to sneak in a few cute date nights too, but yeah… mostly tacos.

Then in 2023, my brother got married in Playa del Carmen, and after the wedding, one of my girlfriends and I dipped down to Bacalar for a post-party chill week. We stayed at this stunning lagoon-front hotel and fully committed to eating our body weight in good food—from vegan cafes to taco trucks and everything in between.

Last year, I had the chance to go back again—this time on a full-blown Quintana Roo trip with three other girls. We stopped in Bacalar for a few nights before catching the ferry to Caye Caulker, and I swear, every time I go back, the food just gets better.

So after four years of taste-testing everything from street snacks to steak nights, I’ve put together my ultimate list of where to eat in Bacalar. Whether you’re after the crispiest chilaquiles, a steak that lowkey changed my life, or just somewhere to sip a spicy marg and stare at that wild blue water—this list of the 12 Best Restaurants Bacalar has to offer will have you sorted.

12 Must-Try Restaurants in Bacalar Mexico

Over the years, I’ve tried a ton of spots, but these are the ones I always find myself coming back to. Yes, some of the usual suspects pop up on every Bacalar food list—Mr. Taco, La Playita, etc. But Bacalar’s charm lies in the little side streets and hidden gems just waiting to be discovered. After eating my way through just about every spot in town, I’ve narrowed down my absolute favorites.

To make sure there’s something for everyone, I’ve included a range of options to suit different budgets—whether you’re craving a quick, affordable taco or looking for a vibey spot to enjoy cocktails while watching the sunset. So let’s get into it!

1. Mr. Taco // Best Budget Friendly Bacalar Restaurant

Opening Hours: 11:30am-11:00pm Closed on Thursdays
Price: $
My Rating: ★★★★★
Menu & Website

Mr. Taco is an absolute staple in Bacalar. I can’t even count how many nights I’ve found myself here. The first time we visited, Oliver was still a vegetarian, so we tried all the veggie options—and let me tell you, these are hands down the best vegetarian tacos I’ve ever had in Mexico. (outside of Mexico City, of course.) My personal favorites are The Rajas Poblanas and Espincas Crema—they’re melt-in-your-mouth good.

Don’t skip the poblano pepper, either. It’s stuffed with gooey cheese that’ll make you want to order five more. While most tacos range from 25 to 35 pesos, the value here is unbeatable. I also highly recommend the fish tacos—crispy on the outside with a juicy inside, perfect for a summer day, especially paired with a limon agua fresca.

The spot can get crowded, but they recently moved to a bigger location, so there’s more space but it still fills up. But the service is usually quite fast as a lot of the filling is pre-made, so just grab a drink and wait around, it won’t take long and it’s so worth it.

2. Hijos Del Cocho // My Favorite Restaurant in Bacalar!!

Opening Hours: 8am-10:00pm
Price: $
My Rating: ★★★★★
Menu & Website

I seriously think about Hijos Del Cocho at least once a week. When my friend Marissa and I were looking for somewhere nearby our villa in Bacalar, we didn’t want to walk all the way into town, so we decided to check out this spot. It’s a bit off the beaten path, but trust me, it’s totally worth it.

We ended up coming here twice in just four days because the food was that good. The aguachile was some of the best I’ve ever had—shrimp drenched in lime and red onions, a bit like a Mexican ceviche but with an extra spicy kick.

The atmosphere is great too, right by the lagoon, with a cozy back area full of fairy lights and an inside space that features live DJ sets on the weekends. If you love fresh seafood, this place is a must-try, and the prices are very reasonable for budget travelers. Definitely a 10/10 in my book!

3. Nixtamel// Best Fine Dining in Bacalar

Opening Hours: 12pm-10:30pm
Price: $$$$
My Rating: ★★★★★
Menu & Website

Nixtamal is absolutely one of the best places to eat in Bacalar. If you’re traveling with a group, I highly recommend making a reservation, especially during high season, because this place books out fast. My friend and I actually came here three times in one week… yeah, it’s that good.

Just a heads up, this is one of the most expensive restaurants in Bacalar, but honestly, it’s worth every peso. The setting is next-level: tables tucked under trees with soft lantern light, kind of like you’ve stepped into a jungle fairytale. They also have an indoor dining space that’s just as lovely, but the outdoor vibe? Unreal.

We kicked things off with the black shrimp aguachile—spicy, tangy, and super fresh. Then we split the ribeye and the salmon xocolatl, and both were cooked to perfection. They also have some great vegetarian options. The service is on point, too—friendly, attentive, but not over the top. If you’re going to splurge on one meal in Bacalar, make it this one.

4. Ixchel Bacalar

Opening Hours: 8am-2pm Closed on Mondays
Price: $
My Rating: ★★★
Menu & Website

Located on one of the side streets, just up from the Lagoon near La Playita, Ixchel Bacalar is a great budget-friendly local breakfast spot. I personally really enjoy their huevos rancheros and chilaquiles, but they also offer some sweet alternatives like banana pancakes.

The vibe is laid-back, and in a shady garden, so the morning heat isn’t unbearable. If you’re looking for a place with great food and a relaxed atmosphere without breaking the bank, Ixchel Bacalar is a solid option.

5. Mango y Chile// Best Vegan Restaurant in Bacalar

Opening Hours: 12:30m-8:30pm Closed on Tuesdays
Price: $$$
My Rating: ★★★
Menu & Website

If you’re a vegan traveling through Mexico, you know how tough it can be to find good options. But Mango y Chile isn’t just good—it’s one of the best Bacalar restaurants, full stop. I had the Maya burger, which brings a unique twist with pineapple, plus their classic burger, and of course, we couldn’t skip trying one of their famous smoothies, the Mango y Chile.

The flavors are fresh, bold, and way beyond what you might expect from your typical vegan spot. The restaurant sits up on a hill with an amazing lagoon view, which just makes the meal that much better.

It’s a little more expensive for Bacalar, but if you’re up for the splurge, it’s worth it. However, if I only had a few nights in town, I might skip it (don’t come for me—I like my meat, okay?). Still, for vegan travelers or anyone looking to try something fresh and flavorful, Mango y Chile is a must-visit.

6. Enamora Restaurant and Cafe // Best Brunch Spot in Bacalar

Opening Hours: 7:30am-4:00pm Closed on Tuesdays
Price: $$
My Rating: ★★★
Menu & Website

If you’re having an early morning or just want to enjoy a solid cup of coffee, Enamora is the perfect place to be. Finding great coffee in Bacalar wasn’t easy, but after what felt like hours of research (thanks, Oliver!), we discovered Enamora and decided to give it a go. It’s located just a little past the center of town, so it tends to fly under the radar, making it a quiet, relaxed spot to escape the hustle.

The café doubles as a gallery for a local women’s art collective, adding a unique touch to the ambience and supporting local artists. For breakfast, we had the chilaquiles and a refreshing fruit bowl, both of which were delicious and the perfect way to start our day. If you’re in the mood for a chill, low-key vibe with excellent coffee and a dash of local culture, Enamora is definitely worth a visit.

7. Mi Burrito Bacalar // Our Favorite Casual Bacalar Restaurant

Opening Hours: 12pm-9pm Closed on Wednesday
Price: $$
My Rating: ★★★★
Menu & Website

Mi Burrito is a must-try if you’re in Bacalar. While burritos aren’t exactly a traditional Mexican cuisine, this food truck takes them and really makes them their own. Fully loaded with rice, beans, avocado, your choice of protien, and wrapped sustainably in banana leaves, these burritos hit all the right notes. They’ve got solid veggie options too, and their homemade salsas are seriously good.

It’s the perfect casual meal after a day on the water, and the friendly vibe adds to the experience. Music plays while everyone digs into their food, creating a laid-back, fun atmosphere. On top of the killer burritos, their cocktails are also worth noting. I had a spicy mango margarita with a tajín rim, and it was the ideal mix of sweet and sour. All of the burritos hover around 150-200 pesos making it a relatively budget-friendly option for a filling meal.

8. El Maniti Bacalar

Opening Hours: 8:30am-2:30pm
Price: $$
My Rating: ★★★★
Menu & Website

El Maniti Bacalar is one of the most unique dining spots in town. It doubles as a concept store selling local goods, but the real magic happens when you walk through to the back. The eating area feels like something straight out of a fairy garden, with lush greenery and art-filled spaces creating a relaxed, almost whimsical vibe.

As a self-proclaimed chilaquiles addict, I have to say—El Maniti’s chilaquiles are some of the best I’ve had. Crispy tortillas smothered in tangy green sauce, topped with cheese and a perfectly cooked egg—honestly, it’s everything. The prices are pretty reasonable for the area, and there are vegetarian and vegan options too, so everyone can find something they like.

Their coffee is freshly brewed and pairs perfectly with any dish on the menu, making it a great spot for a leisurely breakfast or brunch. Plus, it’s located just a short walk from the center of town, so it’s easy to find, even though it’s tucked away a bit. Definitely worth seeking out for both the food and the vibe!

9. PicaFlor Bacalar // Best Cafe in Bacalar to Work Remotely

Opening Hours: 8am-4pm
Price: $$
My Rating: ★★★★★
Menu & Website

As someone who works remotely a lot, finding a good spot where I can fuel my caffeine addiction and get some work done is a must. PicaFlor is my absolute favorite place to do just that. The vibe is super chill, with indoor and outdoor seating options—perfect for either flying solo with your laptop or chilling with a group.

The space has major Tulum vibes, featuring whitewashed walls, large elephant ear plants, and natural materials that make you feel like you’ve stumbled into a cozy, stylish oasis.

As always, I went for the chilaquiles (because, well, they’re amazing), paired with an iced latte that definitely helped me power through the morning. My friends tried a few different dishes, and I’ve got to say, the vegetarian sandwich looked especially good. It’s a great place to settle in for a productive morning with delicious food and coffee that hits the spot every time!

10. La Playita// Best Bacalar Restaurant with Lagoon Views

Opening Hours: 12pm-11pm
Price: $$$
My Rating: ★★★★
Menu & Website

La Playita is a popular spot in Bacalar, and it’s easy to see why. It’s located right on the Bacalar lagoon, but set back enough from the main road that it feels peaceful and tucked away. It’s a great place to chill out—whether you’re stopping by for lunch in the sun or planning a cozy dinner with twinkly lights overhead.

It’s definitely on the pricier end for Bacalar, but you’re paying for both the view and the fresh ingredients. I had the grilled octopus which was perfectly charred on the outside, tender inside, and finished with a fresh squeeze of lime.

We also split the empanadas and a tuna steak, which were amazing. Despite the upscale menu, the atmosphere is still super relaxed; it’s Mexico, after all, and flip-flops are always welcome.

11. Los De Atlixco

Opening Hours: 8am-10:30pm
Price: $$
My Rating: ★★★
Menu & Website

If you’ve hit your taco limit (I know, blasphemy), Los De Atlixco is a solid switch-up. They’ve got burgers that seriously deliver—and yes, they do still have tacos if you’re not ready to fully let go (5 for 125 pesos, which is a steal).

It’s right off the center of town, super easy to get to, and has a really fun, laid-back vibe. There’s always live music playing. I went for the Mexico burger and it was massive—stacked high, juicy, flavorful, the whole deal. Definitely one of those meals where you leave full and happy. They also have a great happy hour of 2 for 1 every night, which I obviously participated in!

12. Yerbabuena// Best Healthy Option in Bacalar

Opening Hours: 8am-5pm
Price: $
My Rating: ★★★★★
Menu & Website

We stumbled on this little smoothie shack by pure luck—aka wandering the streets in search of an Electrolit (real ones know). It didn’t even show up on Google Maps at the time, but thank god we found it.

This colorful café is everything you want on a hot, humid morning when anything greasy sounds like a bad idea. Think plant-based smoothies, fresh fruit bowls, and light, feel-good food that doesn’t weigh you down. They’ve also got coffee, matcha, and other essentials to reboot your soul.

Since we first visited, they’ve upgraded to a bigger, super aesthetic location. We’re talkin’ white walls, natural light for days, Bali/Tulum vibes, and just overall great energy. One of the best healthy spots in Bacalar for sure.
