The 9 Best Restaurants in Holbox Mexico: My Top Food Spots on the Island 2025
I’m a massive foodie and it’s honestly one of the biggest reasons I travel. Wherever I go, I make it my mission to try as much good food (and as many good restaurants) as possible. Life’s too short for bad meals, right?
Before visiting Isla Holbox for the first time, I didn’t expect much from the food scene. The island has a bit of a rustic reputation, it’s laid-back, sandy, and definitely not polished like Cancun, Tulum, or even Isla Mujeres. But I was very wrong.
When I first came here about five years ago, I already found some surprisingly good spots. But on my most recent visit, I was blown away by how much Holbox has grown. There are now tons of amazing restaurants, from beachy taco shacks to chic, design-forward dining spots that could easily fit into any big city or even Tulum.
Since eating out is such a huge part of any trip (especially here), I wanted to put together a list of the best restaurants in Holbox. These are the ones that truly stood out to me, the ones I’d go back to in a heartbeat. Let’s dig in.

What are the Best Restaurants in Holbox? I’ve got the Answers
Before we dive in, a quick note, every restaurant on this list is one I’ve personally tried and loved. Food is always subjective, so think of this as my honest, first-hand foodie list, not a Michelin guide (though I like to think my taste is pretty solid).
I’ve also mixed things up here, it’s not just fancy sit-down dinners. You’ll find everything from cozy candle-lit spots to my favorite taco stand and even an empanada shack. Basically, a little bit of everything that made me happy (and full) on the island.
Two of my absolute standouts that deserve an early mention: Lecmu Tacos Quesabirria, a small taco stand right by the main square that serves the best birria on Holbox, I was genuinely obsessed, and Piedrasanta, which I loved for its super chic decor, incredible ceviche, grilled octopus, and cocktails. I went there for a date night, and it was perfect from start to finish.
So all in all, I have to say that Holbox offers way more than you might think when it comes to food. I’ve chatted with a few people who didn’t want to visit because they assumed there wasn’t “enough there”, but honestly, that couldn’t be further from the truth.
I could easily spend a full week here hopping between different cafés, breakfast spots, beach bars, and taco stands without ever running out of places to try. So don’t let the internet fool you, Holbox might look rustic and laid-back, but when it comes to cafés, restaurants, and bars, this little island seriously delivers.
1. Piedrasanta Holbox // Best Restaurant in Holbox Overall
Opening Hours: 5pm-12am
Price: $$$
My Rating: ★★★★★
Menu & Location
Number one on my list, even though this isn’t really a ranking, has to be Piedrasanta Holbox, easily one of my favorite spots on the island.
This place gives total Tulum vibes in the best way possible. I loved the warm lighting, natural textures, and that super cool effortlessly chic, boho-Mexico decor. It’s definitely one of the most stylish restaurants in Holbox, but luckily, it’s not just about the looks, the food completely lives up to the hype too.
From the second I arrived, the staff couldn’t have been more welcoming. I tried the grilled octopus (perfectly charred and tender) and the ceviche, which was super fresh. But the real stars for me were the cocktails. They were unique, beautifully presented, and honestly some of the best I’ve had in Mexico.
I didn’t try it myself, but apparently the lobster risotto is incredible too. It’s definitely one of the pricier restaurants on the island, but for a special evening or date night, I’d say it’s absolutely worth it.

2. Lecmu Tacos Quesabirrias // Best Birria Tacos in Holbox
Opening Hours: 7pm-2am
Price: $
My Rating: ★★★★★
Menu & Location
As I said before, this list isn’t just full of fancy dinner spots, it’s all the food I actually loved. And high up on that list is Lecmu Tacos Quesabirria. Especially the first time I came to Holbox as a backpacker, I went there pretty much every night.
It’s just a small street cart right by the main square where all the food stalls pop up in the evenings. I love walking around there, but this place was always my favorite. They only do two things, birria tacos and quesabirria, and both are unreal.
If you’ve never had quesabirria before, it’s basically a cheesy, fried taco filled with slow-cooked birria meat, and you dip it into a cup of broth that comes on the side. It’s messy, greasy, and completely addictive.
I know some people get nervous about eating street food, but honestly, don’t be. These tacos are the real deal, simple, cheap, and ridiculously good.

3. Roots Pizzas
Opening Hours: 12pm-11pm
Price: $$$
My Rating: ★★★
Menu & Location
I really like Roots Pizza in Holbox, partly for the food, but mostly for the vibe. It’s got this big open-air backyard with tables set up under trees, fairy lights strung up everywhere, and usually some live music in the background. It feels super relaxed and a little bit magical, especially at night.
As the name suggests, it’s all about pizza here. They’re especially famous for their lobster pizza, which I have to admit I didn’t actually try (I went for pepperoni instead). But plenty of people come here just for that, and it’s kind of their signature dish. The pizzas are all wood-fired, and the atmosphere makes it a great spot for a casual evening out.
That said, I’m personally more of a Neapolitan-style pizza person, so if that’s your thing too, definitely check out Quartieri Pizza on Holbox, they do a really good one there.
4. Luuma Holbox // Top Fine Dining Holbox
Opening Hours: 5pm-12am
Price: $$$
My Rating: ★★★★
Menu & Location
Luuma is another spot I went to for dinner, and similar to Piedrasanta, it has a slightly more upscale vibe that reminded me a bit of Tulum. I actually like having a few restaurants like this on Holbox, it’s nice to have options for a proper sit-down dinner, but I really hope it doesn’t go too far. A few chic places are great, but no one wants Holbox turning into a second Tulum.
The space itself is gorgeous, with that polished, beachy aesthetic and really good drinks. It’s definitely one of my favorite seafood restaurants on the island, their panko shrimp is excellent, and the grilled fish is spot on too. It’s a little pricier than most places, and it does get busy, so I’d recommend going around 7:30 p.m. to skip the line.

5. La Conquista Empanadas
Opening Hours: 8am-4pm
Price: $
My Rating: ★★★★★
Menu & Location
Back to the simpler side of Holbox and my favorite spot for empanadas has to be La Conquista.
I used to come here religiously, especially the very first time I visited Holbox over five years ago, and I was so happy to see it’s still around when I went back recently. Of course, I had to go again, their empanadas are just that good.
It’s a small, family-run place with a super local feel, and their empanadas are both cheap and delicious. I usually stop by for a quick lunch and spend just a couple of dollars. Most of them cost about 20 pesos (around $1), and there are tons of options like cheese, ham and cheese, chorizo, chicken, and a few seafood ones too.
It’s my go-to for an easy lunch before or after the beach, it’s so quick, simple, and always tasty.

6. Barba Negra // Best Vegan Tacos in Holbox
Opening Hours: 3:30pm-10:30pm
Price: $$
My Rating: ★★★★
Menu & Location
One of my favorite little food spots in Holbox is Barba Negra, which is part of the Holbox Foodie Market, kind of like a small open-air food court with several wooden food stalls. I’ll be honest though, I’ve only ever tried Barba Negra because after my first visit, I never felt the need to try anything else.
They make some of the best vegan and vegetarian tacos I’ve ever had. Their cauliflower tacos especially are incredible, flavorful, crispy, and honestly just as satisfying as any meat taco.
If you’re vegetarian or vegan (or just want something lighter), Holbox has quite a few good options, but this one’s my top pick by far. However I will mention another one down below in this list which is also great for vegan Mexican Food.

7. La Cabane Holbox
Opening Hours: 6am-5pm
Price: $$$
My Rating: ★★★★★
Menu & Location
All the places I’ve mentioned so far are in Holbox town, which makes sense since that’s where most of the good food is (and where I usually stay). But for those of you staying a little outside the center, I wanted to include something that might suit you better and that is La Cabane Holbox.
This is my go-to spot after watching the sunset at Playa Punta Cocos, which is at the far end of the island and, in my opinion, the best place for sunsets on Holbox. On the way back to town, I always stop at La Cabane since it’s conveniently located halfway between Punta Cocos and the main area.
Their menu is pretty varied, they’ve got a wood-fired pizza oven (which, of course, I had to try and it was great), but they also serve really good tacos, quesadillas, and burritos. It’s a relaxed, family-friendly spot with plenty of options, and a solid choice if you’re after a casual dinner outside of town.
8. Arte Sano Vegan & Vegetarian Restaurant Holbox
Opening Hours: 11am-10pm
Price: $$$
My Rating: ★★★
Menu & Location
My favorite restaurant in Holbox for vegan and vegetarian food is definitely Arte Sano. Just to clarify, the place I mentioned before, Barba Negra, still wins for the best vegetarian and vegan tacos (that’s more of a casual, wooden-shack kind of vibe).
Arte Sano, on the other hand, feels like a proper sit-down restaurant with a big menu full of creative vegetarian and vegan dishes, a great spot for dinner rather than a quick taco stop.
When I was in Holbox, I was traveling with a couple of vegan friends, so naturally, we made it our mission to try as much vegan food as possible. I was genuinely surprised by how good everything was, even as someone who isn’t vegan, I loved it. Their vegan burgers were excellent, and the portions were generous.
One of my favorite Mexican dishes in general is chile relleno, which they also serve here. It doesn’t necessarily have meat in it anyway, so it’s always my go-to when I’m skipping meat. It’s basically poblano peppers stuffed with cheese, served in a rich red sauce, simple but so good.
👉 Tip: The place gets busy for dinner, so it’s worth arriving early or making a reservation if you’re visiting during high season.

9. Taqueria El Poblano Holbox // Best Mexican Food in Holbox Island
Opening Hours: 5pm-12:30m
Price: $
My Rating: ★★★★★
Menu & Location
Last but definitely not least, my favorite local Mexican restaurant in Holbox. And by local, I mean the kind of place where you’ll see both tourists and locals sitting side by side, cold beers in hand, and the smell of grilled meat floating through the air.
If I’m being completely honest, this might actually be my favorite restaurant in Holbox. Don’t get me wrong, I love the chic, upscale dinner spots too, but nothing beats proper, authentic Mexican food and Taquería El Poblano nails that perfectly.
I could sit in their outdoor area with a cold beer and a plate of tacos every single night of the week. It’s laid-back, no-fuss, and still has that cozy, slightly cool vibe that makes you want to linger.
The food’s affordable, the tacos and quesadillas are spot on, and their queso fundido (cheese fondue) is honestly next-level. If you’ve never had it before, you need to. Order it alongside some guacamole for starters, trust me, it’s the perfect combo.

Final Thoughts on Where to Eat in Isla Holbox
I think this list gives a pretty good idea of what Holbox’s food scene is like these days and it’s come a long way.
When I first visited years ago, Roots Pizza was probably the most “upscale” spot around. Now there’s so much more variety, from casual taco stands to fine dining and Tulum-style restaurants.
