The Best Time to Visit Lombok Island: When I Would Visit Again 2026
Lombok is for sure becoming more and more popular. It’s grown so much lately, and I assume it will only continue to scale over the next few years.
At least, that’s my personal experience, and I think it has a lot to do with Bali getting a bit “ruined” by over-tourism and overdevelopment. People are naturally looking for alternatives, and the next logical choice is Lombok, which makes total sense.
I lived in Lombok for over two months, and I had the absolute best time there with surfing, eating great food, and just enjoying the nature.
However, Lombok is part of the same weather system as Bali, so the dry season, wet season, and shoulder season are definitely a thing here. It really does matter when you visit Lombok because you don’t want to be rained on every single day, do you?
I’ve put together this quick little guide for the different seasons and the best time to visit Lombok, including my own experience of what living in Lombok was like, so you get a better idea of what to expect and can figure out the best time for you to visit.

The Best Time to Visit Lombok – My Experience
I lived in Lombok for just over two months in June and July. This was absolute peak season, and I would say for the most part I had a great experience. I stayed in Kuta Lombok myself, which is by far the coolest town in Lombok with loads of restaurants, cafes, and so on.
Even though June, when I arrived, was already peak season, I still got quite a bit of rain in the first couple of weeks or so. I guess that goes to show that you can’t trust the seasons 100%.
However, what I did notice is that Kuta Lombok never felt overrun. The beaches were often super quiet. Yes, the town could get busy sometimes, but it was never overrun. There were occasional weeks where it got busy due to summer holidays, but I never even felt close to the masses of tourists that I have seen in Bali before.
So, overall, I would actually highly recommend visiting in the peak season. Even though it was peak season for me, I didn’t really experience any of the downsides that usually come with it, such as inflated prices or huge tourist crowds.
One negative thing that I have noticed, though, was that Lombok had quite the trash problem with trash on the side of the road and even worse, plastic trash on its beaches and in the water. I’ve spoken quite a bit to locals about this and they said it’s because of the previous rain and storms they had, and it usually isn’t that bad (who knows if that’s true or not).
So, I could imagine that earlier in the peak season, so, right after the rainy season, it might be more trashy in the water, and at the end of peak season it might be better. Who knows? But it might be worth trying to visit in August and September at the end of the dry season, when it hasn’t rained for a while.

1. Peak & Dry Season in Lombok (This Is When I Stayed in Lombok)
June – September
As I mentioned above, I stayed in Kuta Lombok for the whole time in June and July. I had a small little villa with a pool, which was super cute, and during that time I explored all of Lombok island as well as the Gili Islands.
Honestly, my time here was almost perfect. It did rain maybe the first two weeks in June, which was a little unlucky and uncommon, but other than that, I had amazing weather pretty much the whole time with blue sky, sunny days in Lombok as well as in the Gili Islands. Some days would actually get really hot, with well over 30 degrees Celsius.
As far as tourist crowds go, I would always imagine that in high season it’s super busy, like in most places. But I was kinda surprised how I never felt that way in Kuta Lombok.
I bet there are parts of Lombok that have more resort tourism where it does get busy quickly, however, in Kuta where I stayed, it barely ever felt overrun.
I could imagine the reason for that is that Kuta as a place in general is just not as popular yet as other places, especially compared to places in Bali, for instance. I’ve been to Bali in peak season before, and it’s just unbearable with the amount of people there.

2. Off Season / Wet Season in Lombok
October – March
I had actually planned to come back to Lombok in the off-season/rainy season because I loved Kuta Lombok so much.
My mindset was that maybe it wouldn’t be raining that much and I’d still have a good time. In the end, I decided not to go because I didn’t want to take the risk.
I did have some friends who stayed in Lombok during the wet season, and from what they’ve told me, it did rain quite a bit. But there were also a lot of nice-ish days, they went surfing a lot, and overall, it seemed like they had a good time.
The main reason why I thought about it was that accommodation during the wet season was so much cheaper, for obvious reasons. However, with Kuta Lombok being a beach town with loads of outdoor activities, a rainy day does kind of ruin it for me because then there is pretty much nothing to do.
Sure, I’m a digital nomad and I could have easily been on my laptop or went to the gym on a rainy day, which could have been fine. But for someone only visiting for a shorter amount of time, I don’t think it’s worth coming to Lombok in the rainy season.

3. Shoulder Season in Lombok
May & September
Yes, of course there is also a shoulder season in Lombok, which in many places I am a huge advocate of visiting. Usually, that’s how I save on expensive hotel prices and hopefully avoid the tourist crowds, too.
Here in Kuta Lombok, as I had mentioned above already, I didn’t think it was necessary since peak season didn’t feel super overrun or pricey in general, so I didn’t necessarily see the need to come in the shoulder season.
However, coming at that time will still give you better prices and probably also smaller crowds regardless.
If you decide to visit at this time, I personally would recommend coming rather in September and not in May, just because, as I had said before, after all the rain from the rainy season, trash washes up on the beaches a lot.
So, I feel like September actually might be the best time to visit Lombok in general for that specific reason.

Where to Stay in Lombok Island
Because Lombok is such a massive island, similar to Bali, I always recommend people actually have a look at a map before they book their hotel.
I can say from experience there is nothing worse than just typing in “Lombok” into Booking.com and booking a nice-looking hotel in the most boring or remote location. Yes, that has happened to me before.
I personally stayed in Kuta, which is a small town on the south coast of Lombok (yes, it’s the same name as Kuta in Bali), and to me, it felt like everything I want Bali to be.
It’s a small beach town with great surf, cute little villas with pools, and a crazy amount of good cafes and restaurants. Alternatively, I would totally recommend the Gili Islands, too. I specifically loved Gili Air, and I can’t wait to go back, to be honest.

FAQs About Best Month To Visit Lombok
Is Lombok worth visiting?
I absolutely think Lombok is worth visiting; in fact, it might be one of my favorite islands in Indonesia. I spent about 2 months in Lombok, and from the amazing nature, beaches, and great surf to cute beach towns like Kuta Lombok, there are many reasons why I would recommend you to visit.
When should I visit Lombok?
I would definitely aim for the dry season, which is June to August. That’s when I visited, and I had great weather and not too crazy crowds for the most part. I would also look into visiting in September because that’s shoulder season and hotels might be a little cheaper then.
What is better Bali or Lombok?
That’s really hard for me personally to pick because I think both islands have tons of pros and cons. If I was looking for small beach town vibes with great surf but still good restaurants and cafes, then for sure Kuta Lombok. If I was looking for sightseeing, Balinese-type temples, and jungles, then I’m definitely picking Bali.
Is Lombok safe?
Absolutely. As far as I can tell, I’ve never had any bad incidents or situations happen where I would say it’s not safe. I think the top things that are considered unsafe in and around Lombok are ferries from Bali, they have a terrible reputation for being unsafe, as well as hiking up Rinjani, which, unfortunately, quite a few people have died on so far.
Final Thoughts on Lombok Best Time to Visit
All in all, I would say the best time to visit Lombok is in the dry season. If I am coming back to Lombok or the Gili Islands, and even though I don’t have it planned, I would love to, I’m making sure to aim for the summer just because everything here is outdoor-related, so rain really kills the vibe.
I think I personally will aim for late August or September, and hopefully the beaches and the ocean will have recovered from the trash which is usually washed up in the rainy season, while I hopefully still have good weather and smaller crowds than what usually come during the summer school holidays.
I hope this little guide could help you. However, if you have any more questions about when to visit Lombok, feel free to reach out and I’ll do my best to help you out.
