As much as I’m a huge foodie when I travel, I’m equally obsessed with coffee. No matter where I am in the world, I’m always hunting down the best local café or coffee shop, it’s basically a core part of my morning routine.

Holbox was no different. When I visited recently, I was genuinely surprised by how many amazing cafés, breakfast spots, and coffee shops this tiny island has. It’s safe to say that Holbox takes its brunch game seriously.

What are the Best Cafes in Holbox? I’ve Got the Answers

As I mentioned above, I first visited Holbox about five years ago and then returned recently and wow, a lot has changed. Back then there were only a handful of cafés and breakfast spots, but now there are so many great options that it actually feels like a proper little coffee scene.

I know some people still worry that Holbox doesn’t offer “enough,” but honestly, it’s grown a lot in the past few years. Sure, it’s still got that rugged island feel with dirt roads, golf carts, and sandy feet, but when it comes to cafés, bars, and restaurants, there’s way more choice than you might expect. I can say that confidently from experience.

When it comes to breakfast and coffee, I’ll admit I have high standards. I lived in Australia for three years, and the coffee and brunch culture there pretty much ruined me for life (in the best way). But even with that bias, I was pleasantly surprised by how good the café scene in Holbox has become.

If I had to narrow it down to just two favorites, I’d say Copal Café Zomay Holbox, where I think they serve the best coffee on the island, and Painapol, which still reigns as the best healthy breakfast spot in Holbox. I first went there five years ago, and it’s still an island institution right on the main street.

1. Painapol Holbox // Best Vegan Cafe in Holbox

Opening Hours: 8am-2:55pm
Price: $$$
My Rating: ★★★★★
Menu & Location

One of my favorite breakfast spots in Holbox is Painapol, which I first visited about five years ago when it was already the go-to café on the island and I was so happy to see it still thriving when I came back recently.

I’m not always in the mood for a super healthy breakfast, but when I am, Painapol is where I go. My usual order is avocado on sourdough with eggs and either bacon or salmon (gotta get that protein in).

I’ve also tried their pancakes with eggs, bacon, and fruit, which were delicious. Everything here tastes great, and they put a lot of love into the presentation. It’s just a cheerful, feel-good breakfast spot. If one of you were looking for an instagrammable cafe in Holbox, this might be it.

They’ve also got plenty of other options like smoothie bowls, açaí bowls, and breakfast burgers, so there’s something for everyone, whether you’re into light and healthy or a little more hearty.

2. Another Clandestino // Best Coffee Shop in Holbox

Opening Hours: 8am-8pm
Price: $$
My Rating: ★★★★★
Menu & Location

Another of my favorite coffee spots in Holbox is Another Clandestino, which I actually stumbled upon by accident one morning when I was just wandering around craving a coffee.

From the outside, it doesn’t look like much and is pretty easy to miss, but once you step inside, it’s this really beautiful, modern-Mexico-style café with a calm little outdoor courtyard tucked away in the back.

I didn’t try many of the breakfast items here, but I did try their banana bread and lemon loaf (both fantastic), as well as their peanut butter bowl, and I came twice for takeaway coffee because it was that good. The espresso is smooth, strong, and perfectly balanced, honestly one of the best coffees I’ve had on the island.

I can’t personally vouch for the food, but it looked great coming out of the kitchen. If it’s anywhere near as good as the coffee, you’re in for a treat. Definitely one of the best espresso bars and hidden gems in Holbox.

3. Copal Cafe Zomay Holbox // One of the Best Cafes in Isla Holbox

Opening Hours: 7am-9:30pm
Price: $$
My Rating: ★★★★★
Menu & Location

Copal Café is another one of my absolute favorites (and just to be clear, this list is not ranked, don’t make me choose!). It’s located just a short five-minute walk outside of town, super easy to get to, and honestly, I loved everything about it.

The café has this gorgeous outdoor area located behind the main building, surrounded by palm trees, shaded, and just the perfect spot to sit with a good coffee and a book. The vibe is super calm and relaxed, which I loved. Also since it is located a little outside of town, it also was less loud and busy which I appreciated.

The coffee here is fantastic, and their food was great too. I had the avocado and salmon on sourdough, which was delicious. I only discovered this place on my last day in Holbox (a real tragedy, honestly), otherwise I would’ve come every morning. It’s definitely going to be one of my first stops next time I’m back.

4. Mr. Happy // Best Value for Money Holbox Cafe

Opening Hours: 8am-2pm
Price: $$
My Rating: ★★★★
Menu & Location

Mr. Happy was one of the first cafés I ever went to in Holbox, about five years ago now and wow, it’s changed a lot since then.

Back then it was a simple, no-frills breakfast spot, but even then their waffles with eggs and bacon were incredible. When I visited again recently, I was surprised to see how much it had evolved. The space has had a full renovation and  glow-up and now has that stylish “Tulum café” aesthetic, still cozy, but much more polished and instgrammable.

The food, though, is just as good as I remember. I haven’t tried everything on the menu (the French toast looks amazing), but I always end up ordering the same thing: Combo 1, which is waffles, bacon, and eggs, with a black coffee.

Sometimes, with so many fancy espresso bars around, all I really want is a simple, classic breakfast and a proper coffee, and that’s exactly what Mr. Happy delivers.

5. Zonnebloem Holbox

Opening Hours: Only Sat 7am-2pm
Price: $$
My Rating: ★★★★
Menu & Location

Zonnebloem Coffee Holbox is a cute little café just around the corner from Mr. Happy. I’ve only been once, but I really liked the vibe, the décor, and of course, the coffee, so it definitely earns a spot on this list.

I stopped by for an iced latte on my way back from the beach, and while it’s hard to mess up an iced latte, this one was genuinely great.

The space has a relaxed, modern feel, and from what I saw, the food looked delicious too. I also did a bit of research afterward (as one does) and the Google reviews are excellent, so I’d say it’s definitely worth checking out while you’re in Holbox.

6. Complemento Coffee Shop // Amazing Cafe in Holbox

Opening Hours: 7:30am-3pm
Price: $$
My Rating: ★★★★★
Menu & Location

Another one of my favorite cafés in Holbox is Complemento Coffee Shop, which actually has two locations, one is more of a casual coffee and brunch spot, and the other also serves dinner. I’ve only been to the café-style one, but they’re just around the corner from each other, so you can easily check out both and see which one you like more.

The vibe here is exactly what you’d want from a proper coffee shop: minimal design, great lighting, a bit of outdoor seating, and excellent coffee. It’s the kind of place that feels calm and intentional, perfect for a slow morning or a bit of laptop time if you’re working remotely.

As for food, I can’t say I explored the entire menu because I’m guilty of always ordering the same thing, which is sourdough with bacon, eggs, and avocado, but it was fantastic. Simple, done well, and exactly what I wanted. I only made it here once on my last trip, but I’ll definitely be back next time I’m in Holbox.

7. Virra Holbox // Hidden Gem in Holbox

Opening Hours: 8am-3pm
Price: $$$
My Rating: ★★★★★
Menu & Location

Last but definitely not least is Virra Holbox, not a traditional café or breakfast spot per se, but I had such a good experience here that I couldn’t leave it out.

Virra has a gorgeous outdoor courtyard that’s perfect for a slow morning coffee or brunch. The vibe is relaxed but stylish, and it’s one of those places where you end up staying longer than you planned just because it’s so nice to sit there.

I tried their focaccia sandwich and shakshuka, both of which were excellent, and the coffee was spot on too. Even though I only came for breakfast, I had a peek at their dinner menu and their pasta dishes looked incredible, so that’s definitely on my list for next time.
