The 5 Best Christmas Markets Cologne Germany: My Favorite Christmas Markets to Visit!

The Christmas markets in Cologne Germany have quickly become some of my favorites, and that says a lot because I grew up in Germany and have been to more Christmas markets than I can count.

Last year I decided to spend Christmas in Cologne, and I ended up spending almost the whole weekend just hopping from one market to another. I thought I knew what to expect, but honestly, I was surprised by how magical they felt, especially compared to the Christmas markets in other big German cities.

Most of the markets are right in Cologne’s Old Town, so it’s super easy to wander from one to the next. I went from sipping mulled wine at the cathedral to snacking on roasted almonds at the Old Market, and by the end of the day, I felt like I had stepped into a dozen different Christmas worlds.

Since I know how much everyone loves a good Christmas market trip, I’ve put together this little guide to the Christmas markets Cologne Germany that I enjoyed the most, my personal favorites and the ones I’d recommend making time for.

Christmas Markets Cologne Germany – My Experience

Last Christmas I was back in Germany visiting friends and family, and since I spend most of the year traveling full-time, it felt really special to be home for the holidays. I started off with a couple of nights in Berlin before heading down to Cologne, and that ended up being perfect because it gave me the chance to compare the two.

And honestly, Cologne wins by a mile. Berlin’s Christmas markets just felt too commercialized, like the charm had been stripped away, which was a shame. 

The Christmas markets in Cologne though, completely surprised me. They felt warm, festive, and so much more authentic.

The first one I went to was the famous Christmas market at the Cologne Cathedral. Don’t get me wrong, the backdrop is incredible, the cathedral towering over the twinkling lights is stunning, and from above the market looks beautiful (I’ll try to include a photo). 

But once I was actually inside, it felt a bit too polished and commercialized for my taste. All the stalls looked identical as part of the market’s “design,” which looked neat but also made it feel a little impersonal.

The real highlight came afterwards when I went to the Heinzel’s Wintermärchen market in the Old Town at Alter Markt and Heumarkt. 

That one was a completely different experience and by far the best Christmas market I’ve been to. I spent hours there drinking mulled wine, sampling everything from sausages to garlic mushrooms, grilled salmon, and crepes and just enjoyed the atmosphere. It felt rustic and cozy, almost like stepping into a Brothers Grimm fairytale, but without feeling fake or like a theme park.

Everything You Need to Know About Christmas in Cologne Germany

• Location matters: Most of the best Christmas markets in Cologne are in the Old Town, so I always stay somewhere central. It just makes life easier because you can walk straight from your hotel to the markets without having to bother with transport.

• Opening times: Not all markets open at the same time. Some start in mid-November, others only towards the end of November, so definitely double-check the dates before you plan your trip.

• Book early: Cologne gets busy at Christmas. It’s not just international tourists but also Germans who love spending a few festive days here, so hotels sell out quickly. I’d recommend booking well in advance.

• Getting around Cologne: Within the city center and Old Town, I usually just walk everywhere. The Christmas market at the cathedral, the Old Town markets, and even the one by the Chocolate Museum are all within walking distance. Super convenient.

• Try the food: German Christmas market food is honestly one of my favorite things about the whole experience. My go-tos are bratwurst, garlic mushrooms, grilled salmon, Reibekuchen (potato pancakes/ hashbrowns), and roasted almonds. Trust me, you’ll want to try at least a few.

• Bring cash: Most vendors are still cash-only. Drinks and food are usually somewhere between €5–10 each, so it’s good to grab cash beforehand.

• Prepare for the weather: Winters in Germany can be cold, wet, or both. Bring a warm coat, maybe a rain jacket, and just be ready to layer up. (We’re not made of sugar, right?)

The Christmas market at Cologne Cathedral wasn’t necessarily my personal favorite, but let’s be honest: it’s hard to beat the setting. I mean, I was sipping mulled wine at the foot of an 800-year-old Gothic Cathedral, that alone makes it worth seeing, especially if it’s your first time in Cologne.

The square does look pretty magical at night though, with a huge Christmas tree glowing in the center and the cathedral towering dramatically above the little red food stalls. When I visited, I wandered a couple of laps just to enjoy the atmosphere, Glühwein in hand, and I have to admit it was a pretty stunning sight.

Food-wise, the options were fine,  nothing particularly unique compared to other markets in the city. 

One thing you should know is, this Christmas market does get fairly busy since it’s the most Christmas Market in Cologne Germany. My advice is, do what I did: I came here in the late afternoon or early evening, so pretty much made it my first stop, grabbed a small snack and a mulled wine, took some photos, and enjoyed the atmosphere before it got super busy so I would have time to visit different Christmas markets in Cologne afterwards. It’s absolutely worth experiencing, but it’s not the one I’d spend hours at.

2. Christmas Market in Cologne Old Town ( My Absolute Favorite Christmas Market in Cologne!)

The Old Town Christmas market in Cologne, officially called Heinzel’s Wintermärchen, was hands-down my favorite. It stretches across Alter Markt (Old Market) and Heumarkt, basically taking over most of the Old Town, and it’s only about a ten-minute walk from the Cologne Cathedral. I actually did them back-to-back: Cathedral first, and then I wandered over here.

By the time I arrived the sun had already set (apologies in advance for my darker photos), but that only added to the atmosphere. The stalls all had these authentic, rustic designs, quirky, cozy, and full of charm. Compared to the cathedral market, this one just had so much more soul and character.

I spent ages here, and I loved every second. I tried several different mulled wines, definitely give the white Glühwein a go, it’s less popular but surprisingly good, plus Reibekuchen (German hash browns), roasted almonds, grilled salmon, bratwurst, and a handful of other snacks. 

My favorite part, though, was that it felt like a place you could actually hang out. Some stalls even have proper seating areas and little bars, and there’s an ice rink and a curling sheet for anyone who wants to get active.

Plenty of locals use this market as their dinner spot, and honestly, that’s what I recommend too. I often treat Christmas markets as one long dinner made up of snacks, mulled wine, and maybe a beer or two, and this one was perfect for that. I easily stayed a couple of hours and would happily go back again.

3. Cologne Christmas Market at Rudolf Square

The Christmas market at Rudolfplatz was another one I really enjoyed, even though it’s quite different from the first two. I visited earlier in the day, and it immediately felt more like a cozy neighborhood market than a big city one. There were kids selling their handmade crafts, little nativity plays being performed, and plenty of stalls focused on traditional handicrafts and activities for children.

I’d especially recommend this market for families. It has a friendly, community feel, and because it’s smaller and less crowded, it’s much easier to navigate with children (or a stroller) than some of the busier Cologne Christmas markets.

4. Harbour Christmas Market Cologne (Chocolate Museum)

Another Christmas market in Cologne that I thought was pretty cool is the one by the Chocolate Museum. It’s fairly small, but since it’s right in the Old Town, it made sense for me to swing by and check it out.

This market definitely has more of a modern twist compared to the others. It’s set against the Malakoffturm, a castle-like tower that looms dramatically over the stalls, and there’s usually a Ferris wheel here too, which makes for some fun photos.

It’s not the biggest market and probably not a “must” on its own, but if you’re staying in Cologne’s Old Town, I’d absolutely recommend popping by. Grab a mulled wine, enjoy the views over the Rhine, and then carry on to the other markets nearby.

5. Heavenue Cologne Christmas Markets (LGBTQ+ friendly)

One last Cologne Christmas market I wanted to mention is Heavenue, mainly because it’s an LGBTQ+ focused market. (Full disclosure: most Christmas markets in Cologne are welcoming and inclusive, so you’re safe everywhere , but this one is organized by the LGBTQ+ community itself.)

Heavenue features colorful pastel-themed stalls, rainbow-decorated mulled wine cups, and fun shows, so it promises to be a really fun and different experience.

It hasn’t been held in a few years, and this coming Christmas will be the first time it’s back, so I’m especially excited to check it out. I have a feeling it’s going to be a blast!

Final Thoughts on Cologne Christmas Markets

In my opinion, Cologne has some of the best Christmas markets in Germany. Outside of the holiday season, I might lean toward Berlin, Hamburg, or Munich if I had to pick one city to visit. But during the winter I personally prefer Christmas in Cologne.

The Old Town feels almost like a small town with its charming houses, and the markets here are incredibly cute and cozy. My personal favorite, without a doubt, is the Old Town market. I’ve visited it several times and loved everything about it, the atmosphere, the food, the mulled wine, and just soaking up the festive spirit.
