Kanazawa is beautifully calm, with amazing traditional geisha and samurai districts, stunning Japanese gardens, and an impressive castle.

Most importantly, it feels way less touristy than your typical spots like Tokyo or Kyoto. It’s got all that “Little Kyoto” charm but with a much more relaxed, authentic vibe.

I personally spent about three days in Kanazawa because I was traveling full-time and in no rush, but I think even with two days, you can have a great time here.

How Many Days in Kanazawa Do I Need – My Quick Answer

As I mentioned, I spent three full days in Kanazawa. I definitely enjoyed having that extra time because I was on a longer trip through Japan and wasn’t in a rush, but at the same time, I don’t think three days are strictly necessary for everyone.

If you’re here on vacation, I think one day is probably a little too short. I personally wouldn’t go anywhere for just one day; by the time you deal with transport and checking into a hotel, one day often doesn’t feel worth the effort, no matter where I go. That’s why I think two days in Kanazawa really is the sweet spot.

I could definitely pack my favorite activities into two full days. Most importantly, that would include eating a bunch of amazing sushi and ramen, but it also covers the three famous geisha and samurai districts. I’m a bit of a nerd when it comes to Japanese architecture, so naturally, I was all over those!

I also had plenty of time to visit Kanazawa Castle and Kenroku-en Garden, which were the most beautiful Japanese gardens I’ve ever been to.

For me, Kanazawa was really about wandering around and exploring an authentic Japanese city rather than just ticking sights off a list.

On one hand, I would say no, one day in Kanazawa is not enough. From my own experience, once you factor in getting around Japan on bullet trains, walking to your hotel, and checking in, visiting any city for only one day just feels too rushed. If you can only squeeze in a single day, I’d honestly suggest just spending an extra day in Kyoto or Tokyo instead.

However, I’m also a big believer in making the best of what you’ve got! So, if your hotel is already booked and your heart is set on it, you can definitely still have a great time.

If I only had one day in Kanazawa, I would definitely start early in the morning. I’d visit Kanazawa Castle Park first and then head right over to the Kenroku-en Gardens. From there, I’d walk to the Nagamachi Samurai District and finish off with a sake tasting in the Higashi Chaya District.

Yes, you’d be walking around all day, but because Kanazawa is so incredibly walkable (I didn’t use public transport even once while I was there!), it’s actually possible to squeeze a lot into a single day.

Why I Need At Least 2 Days in Kanazawa (That’s My Sweet Spot)

For me personally and the way I like to explore, I think two days in Kanazawa was absolutely perfect. I honestly did pretty much the same things I mentioned in the 1-day section, but just with way less stress.

I would still visit the Nagamachi Samurai District and the ancient Nomura Clan Samurai Residence, and I would definitely still do a sake tasting in the Higashi Chaya District (even though I actually hate sake, haha, it was still a fun experience!). For me, Kanazawa was really about taking it slow, wandering around, and exploring all the little cobblestone alleyways in the geisha districts.

I stopped so many times for coffees, pastries, and the famous gold leaf ice cream, and I had some truly amazing lunches and dinners. Especially in a country like Japan where food is such a huge part of the culture, I treated eating out like sightseeing. Lunches and dinners were never just random bites on my watch; I always wanted to make sure I was getting the good stuff.

Who Should Stay for 3 Days ?

Three days in Kanazawa is an amazing amount of time, but I don’t think everyone necessarily needs that long, especially considering that the city is fairly small compared to Tokyo and Kyoto.

I would suggest staying for three days or longer if this isn’t your first time in Japan. If you’re on your second or third trip and want to explore more off-the-beaten-path locations, Kanazawa is a great base.

From here, you can do amazing day trips to the super cute mountain town of Takayama or the UNESCO World Heritage gassho-style farmhouses in Shirakawa-go.

I didn’t actually do any of those day trips myself, and I’m a little sad about it! I actually had a trip to Takayama planned, but it turned out to be a bit too much of a hassle at the time. However, when I come back, I’m definitely going to rent a car so I can explore all those super remote destinations properly, I think I’d absolutely love that.
