Anna Maria Island, on Florida’s Gulf Coast, is hands-down one of my favorite spots in Florida—and honestly, in the whole U.S.! It’s just so unique compared to other places. Everything’s within walking distance, the cutest little shops and restaurants are everywhere, the food is amazing, and the beaches are just absolutely gorgeous.
Carae and I have been coming here for years, and it never gets old! Even though I think getting to Anna Maria Island is pretty straightforward, I’ve had so many people ask me about it. So, I figured it’s time to put together a guide to help make your trip planning a little easier. Whether it’s your first visit or you’re heading back for more, I’ve got you covered with my guide on how to get to Anna Maria Island.

Getting to Anna Maria Island
When you look at Google Maps, you’ll see that Anna Maria Island is divided into three communities: Anna Maria at the northern tip, Holmes Beach in the middle, and Bradenton Beach (Downtown Bradenton) to the south.
Getting there is fairly easy, and you have a few options and transportation methods depending on your travel preferences and budget. The closest airport to Anna Maria Island is Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport (SRQ), located about a 30-minute drive away. However, Tampa International Airport (TPA) is also a good option if flights to SRQ are unavailable or more expensive.
If you live nearby, you can also drive, which is a popular choice for locals. Lastly, Anna Maria Island has plenty of marinas, so arriving by boat is another option if you’re fortunate enough to own or rent one.

How We Got to Anna Maria Island
When we visit, we usually stay in Anna Maria City near Pine Ave, up on the north end of the island. That means we always fly into Tampa International Airport (TPA). It’s just a better option—cheaper flights and way more choices compared to Sarasota Airport.
Once we land, we grab a rental car (always book through Kayak.com—they’ve got the best deals and you can pick it up right at the airport). From TPA, I usually allow about 90 minutes to drive to the island. Traffic on the highway can get busy depending on when you arrive, so it’s good to plan for a little extra time.
The drive is pretty straightforward. Take I-275 South into Cortez, which connects you to Bradenton. From there, you can hop onto the island via a drawbridge. Super simple!
Once you’re on the island, you’ve got options. Head straight up to Anna Maria City via Gulf Drive or drive to the south end toward Longboat Key via Manatee Avenue. Either way, getting here is a breeze.

How to Get to Anna Maria Island by Plane
Once you’re on Anna Maria Island, you probably won’t even need a car. A lot of the best spots are super walkable, and there’s also the free island trolley which is a cute and convenient way to get around. So, if you’re looking to save a bit of cash, skip the car rental and just grab an Uber or taxi from the airport.
Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport (SRQ)
This is my favorite option! It is the closest airport and only 25 minutes from Anna Maria Island so you’ll be on the beach in no time. Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport is super convenient for travelers coming from all over the U.S. (and beyond), and there are plenty of direct flights available. If you’re flying from cities like New York, Chicago, Atlanta, or Dallas, you’re in luck—those non-stop flights make getting here a breeze!
From Sarasota Bay, you can easily grab a taxi or an Uber, which can be quite affordable if you share it with someone. Alternatively, you can also rent a car at the airport if that suits your needs.
Tampa International Airport (TPA)
If you can’t fly into SRQ, don’t stress—TPA is a great option too! It’s about an hour away, and since it’s a bigger airport, there are tons of airlines and flight options to choose from. This can give you more flexibility with timing and pricing, which is always a win.
That said, heads up: the drive from Tampa Bay to Anna Maria Island can sometimes take a bit longer if there’s traffic or construction. Just plan for a little extra time, and you’ll be fine.
Coming from Tampa Airport, you might actually be better off getting a rental car because it’s a longer drive, but there are plenty of shuttle services going from Tampa Airport to Anna Maria Island.

How to Get to Anna Maria Island by Car
Anna Maria Island is actually pretty easy to get to by car, whether you’re traveling from other cities in Florida or driving down from a state up north. Here are the main routes to take:
From Tampa: Take I-75 South and then merge onto SR 64 West.
From Miami/Fort Lauderdale: Take I-95 North until you reach Fort Pierce, then merge onto the Turnpike North (towards Orlando). Continue on this road until you get to Exit 224, which will lead you onto US Highway 301. Next, get onto State Road 70 West and follow signs for Bradenton Beach/Coquina Beach. You’ll pass over the Cortez Bridge and then be on Anna Maria Island.
From Orlando: Take I-4 West and then merge onto I-75 South. Get off on Exit 220, which will lead you onto SR 64 West towards Bradenton Beach/Coquina Beach. After crossing over the Manatee Bridge, you’ll be on Anna Maria Island.
If you’re going to be driving around a lot while on the island, it’s best to have your own car or rental car for convenience. However, if you prefer not to drive or want to save some money, there are other ways to get around.

How to Get to Anna Maria Island by Boat
For a unique and scenic way to get to Anna Maria Island, consider taking a boat. There are several marinas in the surrounding areas that offer boat rentals or private boat charters. You can rent anything from a small motorboat to a luxury yacht, depending on your budget and preferences. Additionally, there are also water taxi services available if you just want to hop on and enjoy the ride without having to worry about navigating yourself.
Getting Around the Island
Getting around Anna Maria Island is a breeze. The island is only seven miles long, so it’s perfect for walking or biking. I highly recommend renting bikes for the family.
If you want something a little more convenient, then golf carts are a super fun and easy way to explore the island. It’s one of the most popular ways for people to get around.
Of course, there is also the free Anna Maria Island trolley service. It’s basically a free free trolley (auto train) that stops at most beaches and popular areas on the island, which is just perfect for anyone without a car.
Driving your car is always an option too. If you’re bringing a car or renting one, you’ll find plenty of parking at the beaches, hotels, and restaurants.

When to Visit Anna Maria Island
Anna Maria Island is a popular tourist destination, so it’s best to avoid peak seasons if you want to beat the crowds. The busiest months are typically February through April and June through August.
If you’re looking for a quiet and more affordable visit, consider visiting during the off-season from September to November or in January. The weather is still beautiful, but there are fewer tourists and lower prices on accommodations.
