Is Bangkok Worth Visiting? My Honest Review 2026
Bangkok is one of the most iconic cities in Asia and also one of the most visited. I feel like most people either absolutely love it or completely hate it and there isn’t really much of an in-between!
If I had to choose, I would definitely be Team Love Bangkok. I’ve been to the city three times now, and every single time I have the best time possible. I love the food, the people, the temples, the markets, and yes, I even love the chaos.
Many of you have messaged me asking if it’s even worth visiting Bangkok since it is “just another major city,” but I usually give the same answer every time.
To make things a little easier on all of us, I’m putting together this little guide on ‘Is Bangkok worth visiting?’, including what I love about Bangkok and the things I don’t like so much about Bangkok, so you can get a better idea of what the city is actually about.

Is Bangkok Worth Visiting – My Experience
I have been to Bangkok three times now. The very first time I visited was about 7 years ago, and my two other trips have been more recent.
I really do love the city, maybe not necessarily in the sense that I would want to live there (even though I have loads of friends that do), but I love it because it is just a super fascinating place to explore.
I could literally spend days and days visiting the temples in Bangkok; they are so beautiful and impressive. But I also think that Bangkok has by far the best food in Thailand. If I had to pick one place to do a food tour, I would for sure do it here.
Beyond the sights, I’ve always thought Bangkok just has something iconic and fun about it. I’ve had some of the funnest nights out of my life in this city. I love visiting the rooftops, wandering through the night markets, and taking a tuk-tuk or scooter taxi through the busy city center in the middle of the night.
Honestly, for me, Bangkok gives off “New York City of Southeast Asia” vibes. I have been to so many incredible rooftop restaurants, hidden bars, and clubs here. There is a super cool, upscale lifestyle that I really love, which I have to say is often very different from the typical tourist experience, again, kind of similar to how a New York trip feels depending on how you do it.

What I Loved About Visiting Bangkok Thailand
Temple Hopping & Sightseeing
I have honestly spent days in Bangkok just temple hopping and sightseeing. To be fair, on my most recent trip I didn’t do it quite as much since I’d already been twice before, but for a first-timer, there is just so much to see.
If I had to pick a favorite, the Reclining Buddha (Wat Pho) is my top recommendation. Of course, the Grand Palace and Wat Arun are super impressive as well. One thing I really loved was that I was actually able to walk between most of these major sights, so I didn’t have to exclusively rely on tuk-tuks to get around the historical area.
Food in Bangkok
I’ll be honest: out of all the Southeast Asian cuisines, Thai is by far my favorite and it’s not even close. And Bangkok is honestly the pinnacle of Thai food.
My absolute go-to dish in Thailand is Pad Kra Pao, and the ones I had in Bangkok were just so good. But then again, I’m also perfectly happy with a $1 Pad Thai on Khao San Road during a night out. I know it might be a bit questionable, but it always hits the spot for me!
Upscale Lifestyle
Something many tourists, including myself when I first visited, don’t experience as much is the more upscale lifestyle that’s possible in Bangkok. On my first trip, I was so focused on street food and temples that I didn’t care about anything else.
However, on my last visit, I went to some of the coolest rooftop bars, unique restaurants, and night clubs. The best part of that was that it all felt super cheap for the high quality I was getting. It was definitely a nice change from the typical tourist experience and showed me a completely different side of the city.
Nightlife in Bangkok
From my own experience, and I’m sure many other travelers and Bangkok locals would agree, the nightlife in Bangkok is just the best in all of Thailand.
And by that, I mean anything from the super insane and touristy Khao San Road to amazing restaurants and cocktail bars, as well as the night markets. Bangkok truly comes alive after sunset, and I love that energy. I have to admit, I even used to love it more when I was younger haha, but I can still appreciate it a lot now!

What I Didn’t Like So Much About Bangkok
Bangkok is Chaotic
I know I said earlier that I love the chaos, which is kind of true, but to be honest, I only love it sometimes. I do love sitting in a tuk-tuk or on a Grab scooter taxi at night, driving around and seeing all the crazy lights, and I enjoy wandering through a super busy night market.
However, at times it can get a bit much, especially when you’re shoulder-to-shoulder in crowded places or stuck in traffic for hours. It’s definitely a double-edged sword!
Bangkok Got More Expensive
Since I first visited Bangkok about 7 years ago and have been back more recently, I feel like I have a valid opinion when I say the city has gotten expensive.
I know everywhere in the world has seen price hikes, but I’ve really noticed it in Bangkok, especially when it comes to hotels and any type of accommodation. I will say, though, that local food is still super cheap, so you can still save money there.
Bangkok Can Be Hot & Humid
This is potentially the worst thing about Bangkok: the weather. It can get so hot and humid to the point where I don’t even want to be outside during the day because I’m just sweating my butt off. However, that’s exactly why everyone stays inside during the peak sun hours and life really only starts after sunset!

My Favorite Things to Do in Bangkok
1. Visit Wat Pho (The Reclining Buddha)
There are so many temples and massive sights in Bangkok, and I really enjoy visiting all of them, but if I had to pick a favorite, it would definitely be the Reclining Buddha.
I actually only visited for the first time on my most recent trip, and the Buddha itself is just so impressive. The temple grounds are massive, and I easily spent over an hour just wandering around and taking pictures.

2. Join a Food Tour
I have done a couple of different food tours in Bangkok, and they are so much fun, I just love them. For a start, they are usually done by tuk-tuk, and I honestly love riding around the city that way.
But of course, the highlight is the food. Since I’ve tried quite a bit of Thai food at this point, I wouldn’t necessarily feel the need to do another one, but if it’s your first time in Bangkok, I highly recommend joining one.

3. Sunset Drinks at a Rooftop Bar
I am absolutely obsessed with rooftop bars in Bangkok. Most of them are just so cool and well-designed, and the views during sunset are incredible.
From my own experience, I want to mention that there are definitely overpriced, overrated “tourist” bars and then there are the ones where more locals actually go.
For instance, I would personally avoid Lebua because it’s stupidly expensive and packed with only tourists. Instead, I’d recommend Bar.Yard because it has amazing views and great cocktails.
4. Visit the Night Markets
If there is one thing Bangkok does well, it’s night markets. This is one of my favorite things to do at night, especially for cheap food and drinks.
I’ve been to at least five or six different markets, and there are quite big differences between them. Some are more rugged and authentic (and cheaper!), while others are “nicer” and more organized but also more expensive.
I always recommend Pratunam Night Market if you want that more authentic vibe, or Jodd Fairs if you’d rather have a cleaner, more organized experience.

FAQs About Visiting Bangkok
Is it worth visiting Bangkok?
I absolutely think so! I love Bangkok and think it has some of the best Thai food in the country. It is just so wild and chaotic, and therefore iconic, that I would never go to Thailand without visiting Bangkok.
Is Bangkok expensive?
Yes and no. I have to say, I was surprised on my last visit how much more expensive Bangkok has gotten over the years. Of course, it is still cheaper than anywhere in the USA or Australia, but it’s not as dirt-cheap as it used to be.
How many days in Bangkok do I need?
I personally could easily spend a week in Bangkok because I really like the city. However, if you are just visiting Thailand and making Bangkok part of your itinerary, I would say 2-3 full days gives you a good idea of what the city is all about.
When is the best time to visit Bangkok?
I think the best time to visit is around February because that’s when there is the least rainfall. However, in terms of heat, I feel like Bangkok is always hot and humid, so I always recommend exploring either early in the morning or after sunset.
Final Thoughts: Is Bangkok Worth It?
I mean, you’ve read this article so it’s pretty obvious what my opinion is! I absolutely love Bangkok, but I am someone who really appreciates local culture. F
or me, it doesn’t always have to be a perfect, curated resort with white sand and upscale restaurants, and definitely not in Thailand. I love the street food, the local culture, and the people, so I’ve really learned how to appreciate Bangkok and everything that comes with it.
However, I can also totally understand that if you’re just looking for a relaxing Thailand vacation where you want to chill and not deal with anything stressful, Bangkok wouldn’t necessarily fit into that. That’s totally fair too.
I hope this little guide gave you a rough idea of what Bangkok is about and what there is to do there. Happy travels!
