The ULTIMATE Isla Mujeres Itinerary: How to Spend 3 Perfect Days on the Island

Isla Mujeres has so many amazing things going for it, but two of my favorites are how easy it is to get to and how tiny it is. You don’t need a lot of time to explore, which is exactly why it’s the perfect long weekend escape.

While most people pop over for one day from Cancun, I’m a firm believer that you need at least one or two nights here to really feel Isla’s magic. The quiet early mornings, the live music drifting through town at night, the slow pace that hits once the day-trippers leave; it’s the best part of the island.

This 3 day Isla Mujeres itinerary covers it all: my favorite morning coffee routines, the best swim spots, and where to sip the best margaritas on the island. So let’s jump in!

My Experience With the Best Isla Mujeres Itinerary

Since 2020, I’ve been to Isla Mujeres six different times, from quick two-day trips to a full month. So at this point, I’ve pretty much got it down to a science. I know where to go, what’s worth it, and what you can totally skip.

The first time I came here, though… not gonna lie, I didn’t love it. It was rainy, the food I found wasn’t great, and I just didn’t really get the island. But once I gave it another shot, I completely fell in love. Now it’s one of my favorite easy getaways in the Riviera Maya.

The best part about visiting Isla is that you don’t need a ton of time. From Dallas, I can be on the island in under five hours, which makes it the perfect long weekend trip. And once I arrive, I go straight into full island mode: swimming, tacos, margaritas, sunset golf cart rides, everything that makes this island so magical.

This 3 day Isla Mujeres itinerary is basically my tried-and-true guide to the best the caribbean island has to offer. It isn’t about cramming your schedule but slowing down, enjoying the moment, and soaking in that chill, beachy energy.

3 Day Itinerary to Isla Mujeres

I’ve broken this Isla Mujeres travel itinerary into three days, but honestly, you don’t have to follow it in exact order. Think of it more like a flexible game plan. Each day focuses on a different part of the island so you can make the most of your time without constantly bouncing back and forth.

Whether you want to spend your mornings beach-hopping, cruising around in a golf cart, or sipping margaritas somewhere with ocean views, this itinerary gives you a little bit of everything.

The ULTIMATE Isla Mujeres Itinerary: How to Spend 3 Perfect Days on the Island

Day 1: The North Side + Beach Day

Morning

Kick things off slow and easy; it’s island time now. Grab a coffee and breakfast at Café Mogagua (their chilaquiles are so good!) and then make your way to Playa Norte before everyone else wakes up.

Early mornings here are my absolute favorite, and they’re pure magic. The beach is pretty calm in the mornings, with its gorgeous blue waters, and soft white sand, and it feels even more special without all of the people!

I usually head to the quiet little stretch next to Green Demon Beach Club. You can order your drinks and snacks from the club, but sit in the sand instead of paying for a chair. It’s shaded by palm trees, super chill, and still close enough to the action if you want to hop in for a swim or people-watch a bit.

You can also check out my Isla Mujeres beach guide for more beach options in the north, depending on what you’re looking for!

Afternoon

By midday, Playa Norte starts to fill up with day-trippers from Cancun, so it’s your cue to grab some lunch. Head into the downtown area for tacos at Taqueria Los Burritos or some fresh ceviche from Fish & Gin. Then spend the afternoon wandering through town, check out the cute boutiques, grab a smoothie, and maybe swing by your hotel pool for a nap or happy-hour drink.

If you’re still in beach mode, wander over to Playa Centro for a dip. It’s just a short walk away and a little more local, with families, hammocks, and palm trees if you want shade.

Evening

When the sun starts to drop, make your way back to Playa Norte for sunset. The sky turns wild shades of pink and orange, and everyone just collectively chills out to watch.

The further down the beach you walk towards the MIA hotel, you’ll come across people playing beach volleyball, and just chilling out on the sand. I always grab some beers from the corner shop and just lay my towel out for sunset!

For dinner, go to Lola Valentina if you haven’t already; it’s my absolute fave for their arrachera steak, margaritas, and overall vibe.

Then finish your night at El Patio for live music and drinks. Honestly, I spend almost every night in Isla there. It’s got that perfect mix of fun and laid-back, with great bands and a crowd that actually dances. The frozen mango margaritas are absolutely delicious and might be favorite on the island!

Day 2: The South Side of Isla Mujeres

Morning

Start the day with coffee and pastries. One of my favorite spots on the whole of the island is Lacandona Coffee Bus, this cute turquoise bus tucked into a little courtyard down south. It’s honestly the best coffee on the island if you’re after a proper flat white or latte. I always come here when I’m visiting the south of the island! It feels a bit like a hidden jungle, with a few tables and chairs scattered around.

Once you’re fueled up, hop in your golf cart and drive down to Punta Sur. The southern end of Isla Mujeres has a completely different vibe from the north. You can’t swim here, but it’s still worth visiting just for the scenery.

It’s also much quieter down here, with fewer people, a wilder coastline, and some of the prettiest panoramic ocean views on the island. There’s a short walking trail that winds past a handful of sculptures and a few cool historical spots. You’ll also see a ton of iguanas hanging out. It doesn’t take long to explore, but it’s 100% worth it!

Personally, I like to try to make it to Punta Sur in the mornings before the crowds gather, as it can still get pretty busy. It can also get super hot as there isn’t any shade, so make sure to bring some water. And if you’re really keen, it’s actually the first place in all of Mexico for the sun to rise, and it’s stunning!

Afternoon

After your mini adventure to Punta Sur, head over to Kin Ha, which is one of my absolute favorite spots to swim on the island. The water here is ridiculously blue, calm enough to float around all afternoon, and it’s way less crowded than Playa Norte.

They’ve got great food, paddleboards, water swings, and a really fun but chill vibe. It’s the perfect spot to spend an afternoon. Order some tacos or a margarita, jump off the dock, and just live your best island life.

Evening

After a day in the sun, head back to your hotel to rinse off, then grab dinner at La Lomita. This is one of my favorite local gems on the island. It’s family-run, cozy, and the food tastes like a warm hug. I always order the chile rellenos or mole enchiladas; they’re insanely good, and the portions are huge.

If you’re in the mood for something a little fancier, go to Muelle 7 instead. It’s right by the water and has the most beautiful sunset views, especially if you grab a table outside. Order a margarita (or two) and just watch the sky turn pink, it’s one of those perfect Isla moments.

Day 3: Snorkeling or Beach Club Day

Your last day on Isla Mujeres can go two totally different directions. It just depends on whether you’re feeling adventurous or want to fully soak up the island vibes.

Option 1: Swim with Whale Sharks

If you’re visiting between May and September, you have to go swimming with whale sharks. It’s one of the most unique experiences in Mexico, and totally worth the early wake-up call.

The boats head out in the morning, and once you’re in the water, it’s just you and these massive, peaceful giants gliding through crystal-clear blue water. Most tours also include a quick snorkel stop at a nearby reef before heading back to the island, so it turns into a full-on ocean day.

Personally, I’ve never done this, as I’ve never been in Isla at the right time, but it’s 100% on my bucket list! And everyone I’ve talked to that’s done this tour has said it’s a once in a life time experience and a must do!

Option 2: Go Snorkeling or Scuba Diving

If you’re not doing the whale shark tour, snorkeling around Isla Mujeres is honestly just as fun. You’ll get to see colorful reefs, tons of fish, and the famous Underwater Museum (MUSA), which is a surreal collection of sculptures that have become home to coral and marine life over time.

When I did this tour, I booked the Isla Mujeres Snorkeling Tour Adventure, and it was amazing. Our guides, Diego and Ernesto, were seriously the best. They were super friendly, funny, and made sure we saw as much wildlife as possible. We stopped at three different spots, each one totally different from the last, and Diego even took photos throughout the day.

It’s the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation, and a great way to see the island from a whole new perspective. I’d 100% recommend booking this tour on Viator if you want a stress-free experience with an awesome crew.

Option 3: Spend the Day at a Beach Club

If you’re in the mood to chill, grab a drink, and soak up the sun for your last day, a beach club day is definitely the way to go.

My go-to is Green Demon Beach Club on Playa Norte. They have great food, fun music, and the best piña coladas on the island. It’s the perfect balance of relaxed and lively, and the water out front is that dreamy turquoise you came to Isla for.

If you want something quieter and a bit more private, head to Zama Beach Club. It’s gorgeous, a little more upscale, and perfect for spending the afternoon swimming and sipping cocktails with ocean views.

Both are great options depending on your vibe, and honestly, you can’t go wrong with either.

Things to Do in Isla Mujeres Mexico

Relax on Playa Norte – This is the beach everyone talks about, and for good reason. The sand feels like powdered sugar and the water is so clear it looks fake. I’ve been to a lot of beaches in Mexico and this one easily makes my top three.

Snorkel at Garrafon Natural Reef Park – The water here is insanely blue and you can spot coral, tropical fish, and maybe even a sea turtle if you’re lucky.

Visit Punta Sur – It’s the southern tip of the island and home to the famous Ixchel goddess statue and some wild cliffside views. Come early for sunrise, it’s actually the first place in Mexico to see the sun rise!

Walk around Isla Mujeres Town (Centro) – Cute streets, colorful shops, and plenty of food stands. I loved just wandering around here in the evening with an ice cream or finding a 2 for 1 margarita happy hour—they’re everywhere and it’s the best, ha!

Take a Golf Cart Around the Island – This is the best way to explore at your own pace. You can pull over wherever you want for beaches, viewpoints, taco stands, and honestly, it’s just fun to zip around like a local.

Snorkel at MUSA (Underwater Museum of Art) – Super cool experience. You dive or snorkel around massive underwater sculptures that have turned into coral reefs. It’s a little eerie, but one of the funnest things to do on Isla.

Spend a Day at a Beach Club – From chill spots like Green Demon to more upscale ones like Zama, there’s a vibe for everyone. Order a drink, grab a sunbed, and just live your best lazy island life.

Watch the Sunset at Playa Norte – If you can time it right, end one of your evenings here. The whole sky lights up in pinks and oranges, and the beach bar scene nearby makes it even better.

Tips for Visiting Isla Mujeres Mexico

Where to Stay in Isla Mujeres: North vs South

If it’s your first time visiting, stay in the north. You’ll be within walking distance of Playa Norte, restaurants, bars, and all the fun. It’s lively but super convenient, and you can walk pretty much everywhere. This is my go-to stay in Isla, it’s right on the beach and has stunning sunset views!

The South of the island is totally different. It’s quiet, scenic, and surrounded by wild coastline. It’s great if you’ve been to Isla before or just want a slower pace. You’ll definitely need a golf cart to get around, but that’s half the fun anyway. I recommend this stay that is right on the water and offers amazing balconies for you to spend your early mornings on!

Getting Around Isla Mujeres

The easiest (and honestly, most entertaining) way to explore Isla Mujeres is by golf cart. You can rent them by the day or even by the hour. It’s the best way to zip around the island, stop for photos, and hit all the beaches.

If you’re staying in the north, walking works perfectly fine for most of your trip. Taxis are available too, just make sure to agree on a price before getting in, since meters aren’t a thing here.

Best Time to Go to Isla Mujeres

The best time to visit is December through April for perfect weather and calm seas. May through September can bring some rain and seaweed (though Isla gets way less than Cancun), but it’s also whale shark season, which is one of the coolest experiences you can have here. Is Isla Mujeres Safe for Tourists

Isla Mujeres is super safe, even if you’re solo. The main thing to look out for is little tourist scams, like someone coming up to you saying they know you from your hotel. They don’t. They’re just trying to build a bit of rapport before leading you to their cousin’s shop or trying to sell you something. I usually just ignore them and act like I don’t understand.

Money & Tipping in Isla Mujeres

You’ll need cash (pesos) for taxis, small restaurants, and tips. Some beach clubs and hotels take cards, but smaller places might not. They will likely charge you a 3-4% fee for cards as well. ATMs on the island can be hit or miss and have high fees, so try to grab pesos before you come over on the ferry.

I recommend using the Charles Schwab checking account, as I get all of my atm fees refunded each month. It’s awesome for traveling!

As for tipping, around 15% at restaurants is standard, and 20 pesos or so is perfect for small things like bag handling or drinks on the beach.

Some places will allow you to pay in USD, but I don’t recommend this. The exchange rate they will give you is terrible! Again, just go to the atm, I promise it will be fine.

Final Thoughts on Your Isla Mujeres Itinerary 3 Days

Three days is honestly the perfect amount of time to see the island, have some downtime, recover from a hangover, and still squeeze in a few adventures.

By the time you’re hopping on the ferry back to Puerto Juarez in Cancun, you’ll definitely be wishing you had one more day, but that’s the beauty of Isla. It’s such an easy trip from the airport that you can always come back. Find a good flight deal, pack your swimsuit, and you’ll be back sipping margaritas here in no time.
