Exploring Western Australia is hands down one of the most iconic things to do when you’re in Australia! Sure, the east coast gets a lot of hype, but over here in WA, you’ll find some of the most amazing beaches and stunning national parks the country has to offer.
The best way to find these incredible beaches is a Perth to Esperance road trip, of course. This journey takes you to must-see destinations like Lucky Bay and Twilight Beach without having to drive crazy distances to experience them.
I just got back from an unforgettable two-week Perth to Esperance road trip, and I had such a great time. From turquoise waters to soft white sand beaches that squeak under your feet, every day felt like a dream. I’m so excited to share my experience with you and (hopefully!) inspire you to hit the road too.

When to Go on a Perth to Esperance Road Trip
Honestly, there’s no “perfect” time for this trip—it really depends on what you’re looking for. Some people are all about soaking up the sun on stunning beaches, while others might prefer cooler temperatures and the chance to see some amazing wildlife.
Perth to Esperance Road Trip in Summer
If you’re all about beach vibes and want to actually enjoy those incredible white sand beaches (instead of just taking a quick picture and leaving), then summer is your time to go on this road trip. January and February are ideal for relaxing in the sun, with warm temperatures reaching up to 40°C (over 100°F) and very little rain.
That said, be prepared—it can get very hot. I’d definitely recommend staying in air-conditioned hotels or renting a campervan with AC because, trust me, those summer nights can be just as warm as the days.
Pro Tip: November and December are also lovely, but keep in mind it’s fly season at the start of summer. And let me tell you, the flies can be so annoying they might ruin your whole trip, no joke.
Perth to Esperance Road Trip in Winter
If cooler weather, stunning wildlife, and more comfortable hiking temperatures sound like your idea of fun, then winter is a fantastic time for this road trip through Western Australia. With daytime averages around 20°C (68°F), it’s still warm enough to get outside and explore without sweating buckets.
But the real magic of a winter trip, in my opinion, is that it’s whale season along the southern coast. From May to October, you can catch majestic humpback whales up close on a whale-watching tour in Albany. I did this myself, and WOW—it was absolutely unforgettable. Seeing these gentle giants up close is truly one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences.
How to Drive on Your Perth to Esperance Road Trip
There are so many ways to tackle this trip, and that’s part of the fun! Whether you’re camping in a tent with your own car, staying in cozy lodges, exploring vineyards, booking hotels, renting a campervan or motorhome, or even joining a guided tour, there’s an option to suit every travel style. Here’s a breakdown of the best ways to make this epic road trip happen:
Rent a Campervan
For our Perth to Esperance road trip, we decided to rent a campervan for two full weeks—and honestly, it was the best decision ever. We went with a high-top campervan from Britz, which cost us about $1,000 USD for the two weeks.
We also totally lucked out when we picked up the van and got a free upgrade to one of their bigger models (always ask if there’s an upgrade available!). The van came fully equipped with a two-burner stove, a kitchen sink, a comfy double bed, a toilet and shower, plus all the utensils you need for cooking on the go.
If you’re into camping, this is such a fun way to experience the trip. I’ll admit, we’re not the biggest camping fans, so by the end of two weeks, I was definitely ready to sleep in a real bed again.
Rent a Car and Stay in Hotels
If you’re not feeling the campervan life, then renting a car (or taking your own if you’re already in Perth) is another great option. You’ll still have all the freedom of the open road, but instead of camping, you can opt for more comfortable stays in lodges, hotels, or even cozy vineyard retreats.
The western coast of Australia has no shortage of places to stay, from luxurious hotels to charming guesthouses, hostels, and even campsites with cozy cabins. As we go through the stops on this trip, I’ll share some of my favorite accommodation recommendations to help you plan.
Book a Guided Tour
If driving all that way yourself feels like a bit much (totally understandable—there is a LOT of driving on this trip), you can always join a fully guided tour.
Guided tours are a fantastic way to see all the highlights of Western Australia’s stunning southwest coast, and you can do it all in just six days. This is perfect if you’re short on time or just want to leave the planning to someone else. You’ll still get to experience all the must-see spots, like the famous kangaroos at Lucky Bay, the incredible beaches in the Albany region, and the gorgeous wine estates in the Margaret River Region.
Perth to Esperance Road Trip Itinerary
If you’re planning a Perth to Esperance road trip, I honestly think it’s better to do it the other way around—start in Esperance and end in Perth. Getting that big 9-hour drive from Perth to Esperance out of the way on day one will make your life easier. After that, you can just sit back, relax, and take your time exploring.
I recommend leaving Perth as early as possible so you can reach Esperance before it gets dark. We made the mistake of arriving around 9 pm, and dodging kangaroos on the road after sunset was not fun. Those little hoppers are everywhere at night!
If you’re looking to break up the drive, you’ve got to check out Wave Rock halfway through the journey. Wave Rock is about a four-hour drive from Perth, so it’s the perfect spot to stretch your legs. The rock itself is such a cool sight—it’s shaped like a giant wave in the middle of nowhere.
Day 1-3 Esperance
Esperance is a little town on the south west coast of Western Australia. It’s pretty quiet, with just a handful of restaurants and shops—so don’t expect too much action in town. But here’s the thing: no one comes to Esperance for the town itself. The real magic is in the stunning national parks and amazing beaches that surround it!
Lucky Bay in Cape Le Grand National Park is an absolute must-see. The sand is so white it almost blinds you, and if you’re lucky, you might even spot some kangaroos lounging on the beach! Then there’s Twilight Beach, which looks like something out of a postcard with its crystal-clear water and soft, sandy shores. Both spots are total showstoppers, and I can’t recommend them enough.
Lucky Bay Cape Le Grand National Park
Lucky Bay in Cape Le Grand National Park is located about a 50-minute drive from Esperance town and it is most likely my favourite beach in Australia. The park is home to some of the most pristine and picturesque beaches in Australia. Lucky Bay is famous for its crystal-clear water, pure white sand, and friendly kangaroos.
You can spend an entire day just relaxing on the beach or exploring the nearby walking trails.
If you’re camping, I highly recommend staying at the Lucky Bay campground. It’s located right behind the beach and offers stunning views of Lucky Bay. The campsite has toilets, showers, and a kitchen. Plus, you’ll probably spot kangaroos hopping around the area. The best part? If you wake up early, you can have the whole beach to yourself! Just make sure to book your spot in advance because it fills up fast. Click here for bookings
Twilight Beach
Twilight Beach is a must-visit destination in Esperance. True to its name, this beach is most magical at sunset, when the sky transforms into a stunning display of vibrant colors that will leave you in awe.
The crystal-clear water at Twilight Beach is perfect for swimming or snorkeling, while the soft, white sand is ideal for relaxing, sunbathing, or even building sandcastles.
The highlight of Twilight Beach, however, is the iconic Twilight Jumping Rock—a huge rock formation that extends into the water. It’s a favorite spot for cliff jumping. While it might feel a bit intimidating at first, taking the leap and landing in the refreshing water below is an unforgettable experience you won’t regret.
Blue Haven Beach
Right next to Twilight Beach is Blue Haven Beach, known for its serene and tranquil atmosphere. This beach is perfect for those who want to escape the crowds and soak up some peace and quiet.
The calm waters at Blue Haven Beach make it a great spot for swimming, kayaking, or stand-up paddleboarding. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a pod of dolphins playing in the distance.
Even if you can’t spend the whole day, it’s totally worth stopping by just for a quick photo. There’s a long wooden staircase leading down to the beach, and taking a picture from up top looks awesome.
Hellfire Bay
Hellfire Bay is located only a 5-minute drive from Lucky Bay within Cape Le Grand National Park. Hellfire Bay is usually much less crowded than Lucky Bay, so if you’re looking for a beach day away from the crowds or you have a few extra days and don’t want to spend every day at Lucky Bay, then Hellfire Bay is definitely another beautiful option.
You can even hike between the two beaches on the Le Grand Coastal Trail, which offers stunning views of the coastline and surrounding nature. The hike takes about 2-3 hours roundtrip, so make sure to bring plenty of water and snacks for the journey.
Lucky Bay Brewing
To change it up a little and not only talk about gorgeous beaches, Lucky Bay Brewing is a must-visit for craft beer lovers. The brewery is located just outside of Cape Le Grand National Park, and their selection of locally brewed beers is perfect for an afternoon session after a day at the beach.

One of the best places to stay in Esperance is the Esperance Bay Holiday Park. Day 4-5 Bremer Bay
If you want to stop between Esperance and Albany, Bremer Bay is a great option. This small beach town offers a quieter and more relaxed atmosphere compared to the bigger towns of Albany and Esperance.
Fitzgerald River National Park
Fitzgerald River National Park is the main highlight here in Bremer Bay. It’s known for its amazing beaches and campsites within the park. Some of the best beaches in Fitzgerald River National Park are St Mary’s Beach, Quaalup Beach, and Barrens Beach.
Point Ann is another must-visit spot within Fitzgerald River National Park. It’s famous for its stunning views and is one of the best whale-watching spots in Western Australia during the winter months. Keep an eye out for Southern Right Whales as they pass through on their annual migration.

Bremer Bay Resort
Bremer Bay Resort is a beautiful little outback farmhouse-style hotel, and it’s perfect. It is located within the dunes of Bremer Bay, close to the ocean. The rooms are spacious, and the resort features its own restaurant offering delicious fish and meat dishes.

Day 6-7: Albany
Albany is definitely bigger than Esperance, which means there’s a bit more to explore in town. That said, much like Esperance, most people don’t come here for the town itself; it’s all about the amazing beaches that surround it.
If you’re visiting in summer, you have to check out Little Beach and Misery Beach. These two are the best beaches near Albany and are totally worth the hype.
If you’re visiting in winter (from May to September), I totally recommend joining one of the whale-watching tours at West Beach. Seeing those majestic giants up close is an experience you’ll never forget.
Another awesome winter activity is visiting the National Anzac Centre. It’s such a powerful way to learn about Australia’s war history and pay your respects. Honestly, it’s one of those places that really sticks with you—absolutely worth a visit.
Torndirrup National Park
Torndirrup National Park is a short drive from Albany and offers some stunning coastal views. The Gap and Natural Bridge are two popular spots within the park, where you can witness the power of the ocean as it crashes against the cliffs. Keep an eye out for whales during their migration season!
If you’re feeling adventurous, there’s also a hike to Bald Head lookout that offers panoramic views of the coast. It’s about 4-5 hours round trip and includes some steep sections, but the view at the top is well worth it.
Little Beach
My favourite beach in Albany is, without a doubt, Little Beach. It’s much less popular than Lucky Bay, for example, so it doesn’t attract as much tourism, which makes it feel a bit more special.
The beach itself is perfect for spending the whole day basking in the sun. Just make sure to bring enough water and snacks, as there aren’t many places nearby to restock your supplies.
The water is crystal clear and great for swimming, kayaking, or snorkeling. At one end of the beach, there’s a beautiful rock formation that makes for some stunning photos.
Misery Beach
Despite its name, Misery Beach is anything but miserable. Located within Torndirrup National Park, it offers a quiet and secluded spot to enjoy the ocean. Accessible only by foot via a short hike from the car park, this adds to the beach’s unique charm.
The beach is surrounded by cliffs and features a small cove, creating calm swimming conditions. It’s also an excellent spot for fishing or simply relaxing on the sand. If you’re looking to escape the crowds and enjoy a peaceful day by the ocean, Misery Beach is definitely worth a visit.
Whale Watching Tour
If you’re in Albany between June and October, do yourself a favor and hop on a whale-watching tour. There’s nothing quite like seeing these incredible creatures up close as they migrate along the coast.
There are plenty of local tour companies to choose from, offering everything from quick 1-hour cruises to more immersive half-day adventures. No matter which you pick, you’re almost guaranteed to spot humpback whales breaching and playing in the waves!
The smaller tours usually stick closer to Albany and are perfect for seeing humpbacks. But if you’ve got a bit more time, the half-day or full-day tours will take you further out, where you might even spot killer whales (yes, Orcas!). Fun fact—Albany/Bremer Bay is the only place in Australia where you can see these amazing creatures in the wild.

Day 8-10: Denmark
Denmark totally surprised me on this trip—in the best way possible! Just an hour west of Albany, this little town quickly became one of my favorite stops.
Denmark has a bit of everything and is such a great alternative to Margaret River, especially if you’re only planning a weekend getaway. The wineries here are fantastic! We spent the whole day at places like The Lake House and Singlefile Wines—think long lunches, cheese boards, and just soaking up the good vibes.
And just a 10-minute drive from the wineries, you’ll find the stunning William Bay National Park. This place is home to the famous Elephant Rocks and incredible beaches like Greens Pool. The water there is ridiculously clear, and it’s perfect for a dip after all that wine tasting.
If you’re into wine, beaches, or just experiencing beautiful spots, Denmark absolutely needs to be on your itinerary.
Elephant Rocks (William Bay National Park)
Elephant Rocks is definitely a must-visit in Denmark. The large granite rocks that look like—you guessed it—elephants, are truly something to see. Elephant Rocks is located in William Bay National Park, which is about a 10-minute drive from Denmark town.
The best time to visit Elephant Rocks is during low tide, as you can then walk over the rocks and explore the different formations. During high tide, it’s still beautiful to see the waves crashing against the rocks from above.
If you’re lucky, you might even spot some seals sunbathing on the rocks!
Greens Pool (William Bay National Park)
Greens Pool is another must-visit beach in Denmark. I’ve traveled all around Australia and I have to say, this is one of my favorite beaches ever! The water here is incredibly clear and calm, making it perfect for swimming, snorkeling, or just relaxing on the beach.
The unique rock formations also make Greens Pool a great spot for photos. You can climb up on top of the rocks for a stunning view of the ocean and surrounding area. Trust me, your Instagram feed will thank you!
And if you’re feeling adventurous, there’s also a jumping rock at Greens Pool that’s popular with locals and tourists alike. Just be sure to check for any hazards before taking the plunge.
Denmark Winery Tour
Denmark is known for its cool-climate wines, and there are several wineries in the area that offer tastings and tours. One of my favorites is Singlefile Wines, located just a short drive from the town center. Their cellar door has spectacular views of the vineyard and surrounding countryside, making it the perfect spot to unwind with a glass (or two) of wine.
Other popular wineries in Denmark include Rockcliffe Winery, Castelli Estate, and The Lake House Denmark. Each one offers a unique experience and delicious wines to try. I highly recommend doing a winery tour if you’re a fan of wine or just want to learn more about the local industry.

Denmark Animal Farm
One of the highlights of my trip to Denmark was visiting the Denmark Animal Farm. This family-owned farm is home to a variety of friendly animals, including sheep, goats, alpacas, and even emus! Visitors can interact with the animals and feed them snacks.
It might sound like an activity for kids, but I can confirm it’s just as fun for adults too!
Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk
For an incredible adventure in western Australia, I highly recommend the Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk. This suspended walkway takes you high above the canopy of giant tingle trees, allowing you to truly appreciate their size and beauty. The view from the top is breathtaking and definitely worth conquering any fear of heights for’
Where to stay in Denmark
Karri Aura
We stayed at Karri Aura with our campervan, but they also have fully equipped holiday homes and cabins. The campsite is surrounded by Karri trees and offers a peaceful atmosphere. The facilities are clean and well-maintained, with hot showers and a communal kitchen area. The highlight here is definitely the view of the rolling hills of the Denmark winelands and the ocean.

Day 11-13 Margaret River
After a few days in Denmark, we headed to the Margaret River region—and wow, this area has it all. Stunning coastline, epic surf breaks, and some of the best wineries you’ll ever visit.
Out of all the stops on this Esperance road trip, Margaret River has to be my favorite. It’s just the perfect mix of everything. The beaches here are unreal—Redgate Beach has soft sand and amazing waves, plus you can spot wild stingrays at Hamelin Bay. The wineries and vineyards are top-notch (some of the best in WA!), and the town itself has such a chill, hippie vibe. It’s the kind of place you just want to hang out and soak it all in.
My favorite spot in Margaret River to get the day started has to be the Margaret River Bakery. It’s such an iconic spot here in Margs! They serve the best breakfasts, sandwiches, and pastries around. Just make sure to get there early—otherwise, you might be waiting in line for up to 40 minutes. But trust me, it’s totally worth it.
Hamelin Bay
This beautiful beach in western australia is for a change not only famous because its so ridiculsly stunning. no hamelin bay is actually the only place in Australia where you can see, wild stingrays right on the beach. It’s such an incredible experience to be able to interact with these majestic creatures in their natural habitat.
Just make sure to follow the rules and regulations set by the local authorities for your safety and the well-being of the stingrays.
Redgate Beach
If you’re into surfing or just want a chilled-out beach day, Redgate Beach in Margaret River is an absolute must! This spot has some of the best waves in the area, making it a total paradise for surfers. But don’t worry if you’re new to surfing—it’s shallow enough here that beginners can easily get in on the action too. I’ve seen surf schools here all the time, teaching newbies how to catch their first waves in the whitewash.
Not a surfer? No problem! Redgate Beach is still a stunning place to spend a few hours soaking up the sun, taking in the gorgeous coastal views, and watching the surfers do their thing.
Margaret River Winery Tour
One of the best ways to experience the amazing wineries and vineyards in Margaret River is by booking a wine tour. Not only do you get to taste some delicious wines, but you also learn about the winemaking process and get to explore different properties and landscapes.
There are several companies that offer wine tours in the region, so make sure to do your research and find one that fits your preferences and budget. Some even include other activities such as gourmet food tastings or scenic drives along the coast.
I’ll share the link to the tour I booked—it was awesome! Our guide knew so much about the region and the wineries, plus we got plenty of snacks and coffee in the morning.

Heritage Trail Lodge
One of my favorite lodges in Margaret River is the Heritage Trail Lodge. It’s a beautiful bush cottage nestled in the heart of lush greenery. How long does the drive from Perth to Esperance take?
The drive from Perth to Esperance takes approximately 8-9 hours, depending on your route and stops along the way. When we did the drive, it took us about 10 hours because we stopped at Wave Rock and took an extended lunch break.
What is the best time of year to do a road trip in Western Australia?
The best time to do a road trip in Western Australia is in January and February. Yes, it will be pretty hot and crowded, but at least you’ll have guaranteed good weather, and there most likely won’t be any flies ruining your day. The shoulder season of March and April is also a good option, as the weather starts to cool down, and you can still enjoy some sunny days without the summer crowds.
What kind of car do I need for a road trip in Western Australia?
For most parts of Western Australia, a regular car will suffice. However, if you plan on venturing off-road or exploring more remote areas, it’s recommended to rent a 4WD vehicle. This will give you access to more remote beaches and national parks, which are definitely worth the extra effort.
Do I need to book accommodation in advance?
It’s always best to book accommodation in advance during peak season (December – February). If you’re planning on camping, you should also book your campsites in advance, as they can fill up quickly during the summer months. During the shoulder season (March – April), you may be able to find last-minute accommodation options, but it’s still recommended to have at least a general plan in place.
