The 14 BEST Restaurants in Ahangama, Sri Lanka: My Local’s Guide to the Best Food Spots
Right now in 2025, I still think it’s the perfect time to visit Ahangama. It’s not quite as popular (or hectic) as Mirissa or Weligama, but it’s getting close—and that sweet in-between stage means new cafes, cocktail bars, and restaurants are opening all the time.
I don’t know what it is, but from my experience, Sri Lanka just gets it right when it comes to restaurants. The design, the decor, the food, the excellent service—it’s all just better than in a lot of other countries I’ve traveled around in Asia. So yes, I’m a big fan of the food scene here, whether it’s a local rice and curry spot or a more Western-style beachfront restaurant.
I’ve spent over three months in Sri Lanka, including one full month in Ahangama last year—and then just recently, I came back for a two-week trip at the start of 2025. The goal: beach, pool, and trying as many restaurants in Ahangama as possible.
So this post is based fully on my own experience. I want to show you the best places to eat in Ahangama—spots that are actually worth your time and money. Because I know how frustrating it is scrolling through Google and Instagram, getting hangry, arguing about where to go… and then ending up somewhere average.
This guide is here to save you from that. These are the places I genuinely loved—the best restaurants in Ahangama, with great food, great service, and good vibes all around.

What Are the Best Restaurants in Ahangama? I’ve got your Answers right here
The list coming up is made up of my personal favorites—because let’s be real, food is subjective. But after spending a good chunk of time in Sri Lanka, I feel like I’ve got a pretty solid sense of which places are actually worth your time (and which ones just look good on Instagram).
I’ll be honest about each one. Some made it on the list because I genuinely loved everything about them, while others are included because the overall vibe was great—even if one dish didn’t hit or the service wasn’t perfect. If there’s something I didn’t love, I’ll mention it.
I’ve tried to mix it up, too. You’ll find a few pricier spots where you might go for a nicer dinner, and others that are super low-key and affordable. I’m skipping the cafes for now though—there are so many great ones in Ahangama that they deserved their own guide (which I’ve already put together!). Check out my Best Cafes in Ahangama Guide.
This one is all about restaurants you’ll want to go to for lunch or dinner.
Important Info Before You Go:
One thing you definitely need to know—many places in Ahangama do close depending on the time of year. That’s just how things work in Sri Lanka with the changing seasons. The south coast (where Ahangama is) is in high season from November to April—this is when you’ll find everything open. From May to October, it slows way down and most places shut. That’s when the east coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay, etc.) kicks off its season. Some restaurants have second locations on the east coast to follow the good weather—so keep that in mind when you’re planning your trip.

1. Thileni’s // One of my Favorite Restaurants in Ahangama for Sunset Drinks
Opening Hours: 9am-10:30pm
Price: $$$
My Rating: ★★★★
Menu & Website
I’d personally highly recommend Thilenis for the location alone. It’s beautifully designed with bean bags set up on different levels, right on the oceanfront—easily one of the best restaurants in Ahangama for sunset. Full stop.
The food here was also genuinely good. We had the tuna tataki (basically a lightly grilled tuna steak, super rare) and the grilled prawns—both were fresh and flavorful, no complaints. We also had a couple of cocktails (the espresso martini hit the spot) while watching the sun go down. It was just a great spot to hang out and take it all in.
If I had to mention any downsides, I’d say the service wasn’t the most attentive when we were there—but it wasn’t a dealbreaker, and I’m sure they’ll improve on that. It’s also on the pricier side, but with that setting? Honestly, kind of expected.

2. Abrazo Ahangama // One of my TOP Restaurants in Ahangama
Opening Hours: 11am-4pm, 6pm-10pm
Price: $$$
My Rating: ★★★★★
Menu & Website
I think this might be my favorite restaurant in Ahangama
One thing Ahangama was missing for a while was a solid Mexican spot—but since Abrazo opened, that gap’s been filled. I first knew them from their Trincomalee location (which I also mentioned in my Trincomalee guide), so I was pretty excited to try the Ahangama branch.
Honestly, I was surprised how good the tacos were. No, it’s not like being in Mexico or California—but I wasn’t expecting that here. The fish tacos I had were super tasty, and Carae got the honey chicken ones, which were also great. Big portions, too. We had a couple of cocktails, hung out for a while, and really enjoyed the whole vibe—the decor, music, and lighting all just work.
It’s definitely one of those places that leans a bit pricier, but nothing unreasonable. And you kind of know what you’re getting into the moment you walk in. The place looks good, the food’s good, and it’s one of the nicer hangs in town for a good dining experience and drinks.

3. Abode by the Beach // One of the Best Restaurants in Ahangama for a Date Night
Opening Hours: 11:30am-9:30pm
Price: $$$
My Rating: ★★★
Menu & Website
Abode by the Beach is probably the closest thing to fine dining in Ahangama—though I’m putting that in quotes because it’s not traditional fine dining, but it definitely leans more upscale.
The location is gorgeous. It’s a bit outside of town, so we had to scooter over, and from the outside it doesn’t look like much. But once you’re in, it’s a really nice boutique hotel with a stylish restaurant. There’s an indoor area with AC and a beachfront outdoor setup that’s done really well—think chic and minimal, not plastic chairs and neon signs.
The food was really good. We had the tuna ceviche, a salmon steak, and some squid to start, and all of it was delicious. That said, I saw someone order sushi at a nearby table and… it didn’t look amazing. Personally, I’d skip the sushi here—it’s also quite pricey for what it is.
So if you’re in the mood for something that feels a bit more refined and you don’t mind spending a bit more, this is a solid choice. But if you’re just chasing the best food for the price, there are better value spots elsewhere on this list.

4. Balance Beach // Best Cheap Food in Ahangama
Opening Hours: –
Price: $
My Rating: ★★★★
Menu & Website
I’m not joking when I say that this was the best grilled fish I’ve ever had
Balance Beach—at least I think that’s the name (we always just called it “the grilled fish spot”)—is pretty much the complete opposite of the other places I’ve mentioned so far.
It’s literally a wooden shack on one of the best little hidden beaches near Ahangama. Just type “Balance Beach” into Google Maps, and you’ll find it. It’s got a tiny strip of sand with a couple of sunbeds and barely anyone around. Pure hidden gem.
I swear this is the best grilled fish I’ve ever had in my life. So simple but so good. There’s technically a menu, but don’t bother—they just cook what they’ve got that day. We asked for coconuts and grilled fish, and the owner actually ran off to buy a fish just for us. Then the woman grilled it over coals with some lime juice, and it was just so good. Super simple, super local, and just beautiful all around.

5. Citra Ahangama // Best Ahangama Restaurant for a Date Night
Opening Hours: 5:30pm-11pm
Price: $$$$
My Rating: ★★★★
Menu & Website
Citra Ahangama is one of those spots that truly stands out. It’s definitely on the pricier side, but when you taste the food, it somehow feels like a bargain. The quality here is next level—probably the only place in Ahangama where the food is prepared and presented at this high level.
I tried the fish kebab, and it was absolutely amazing—perfectly cooked, full of flavor, and unlike anything I’d had elsewhere in the area. The ambiance is intimate and refined, making it an ideal choice for a more special dinner. The only downside in my opinion is the price tag. But honestly, for the caliber of food you’re getting, it feels more than worth it. Highly recommend it if you’re looking to splurge on a special meal.

6. Sundays Cafe & Restaurant // My Favorite Lunch Ahangama
Opening Hours: 8:30am-4:30pm
Price: $$
My Rating: ★★★★
Menu & Website
I already mentioned Sundays in my best cafes in Ahangama post, but I have to include it here too because it might just be the perfect place for lunch in Ahangama.
It’s in a gorgeous little garden with a super chill atmosphere—perfect for a lazy afternoon. They do great all-day breakfast, but what I really love here are their bowls. Not smoothie bowls, but hearty, savory ones (some people call them Buddha bowls). The sesame tofu bowl is especially good—fresh, healthy, and flavorful.
Definitely a great pick for a nourishing lunch with fresh ingredients in a peaceful setting.

7. Manori’s Kitchen // Best Restaurant in Ahangama for Sri Lankan Cuisine
Opening Hours: 12:30pm-10pm
Price: $
My Rating: ★★★
Menu & Website
If you’re looking for traditional Sri Lankan food in a more relaxed, restaurant-style setting, Manori’s Kitchen is the place. Sure, it’s a little pricier than local hole-in-the-wall spots, so you won’t see tons of locals here—but the food is still super authentic Sri Lankan cuisine.
I’ve been a few times and always had a great meal. The chicken curry and vegetable curry are both solid picks. Like in most Sri Lankan restaurants, you order one main and it comes with a whole spread of little side dishes—curries, sambols, lentils, you name it ( Curry Buffet). Really good value overall.
Only downside? The mosquitos. The owners do their best with coils and incense, but they’re persistent. Still, 100% worth visiting.

8. Little Bang Kitchen // Best Ahangama Restaurant for Ramen & Sushi
Opening Hours: 7am-10pm
Price: $$$
My Rating: ★★★★
Menu & Website
Little Bang Kitchen is one of my favorite spots in Ahangama when I’m craving Japanese food. And once again, location is a big win—it’s right on the beach with a little terrace that’s perfect for stunning views.
They serve what’s probably the best ramen on Sri Lanka’s south coast (at least from what I’ve tried). I’ll admit I’m not usually in the mood for ramen when it’s super hot out, but on a rainy day or cooler evening? This is where I go. They also do some great sushi—so I’m usually a sushi roll for a starter, ramen bowl for mains, cold beer in hand, watch the sun go down kind of guy. No complaints.

9. Mavi Rooftop Restaurant // One of the Best Restaurants in Ahangama with a View
Opening Hours: 11am-11pm
Price: $$
My Rating: ★★★★★
Menu & Website
If there’s one thing better than a beachfront sunset, it’s a rooftop sunset. And Mavi Rooftop absolutely delivers on that front.
I’ve only been once—and just for drinks—but I loved the vibe. I had their mango margarita and one of their signature cocktails, both of which were seriously good. There was live music (chill acoustic stuff), a nice crowd, and a great atmosphere overall.
I haven’t tried the food, so I can’t say too much there. But I did stare at a couple of tables nearby (no shame), and the tuna salad and beef wrap looked very tasty. So even if you just come for a cocktail and the view, it’s worth it. And if the food is anywhere near as good as the drinks, it’s probably excellent.

10. East Falafel // Favorite Cheap Lunch in Ahangama
Opening Hours: 11am-11pm
Price: $$
My Rating: ★★★
Menu & Website
This one’s listed as “East Felafel” on Google Maps (pretty sure that’s just a typo), but either way—it’s my go-to spot in Ahangama for Middle Eastern food, and one of my favorite lunch options overall.
I’ve been here a bunch of times and can honestly recommend almost everything on the menu. The falafel pita is great for vegetarians, the shawarma pita is super tasty, and the Greek-style salad with feta is fresh and filling. Their hummus plate also hits the spot.
The location is nothing fancy, but they’ve managed to create a relaxed, welcoming vibe with just the basics. Super chill spot and great value for money—definitely recommend for a casual and delicious lunch.

11. Society Ahangama // Best Indian Restaurant in Ahangama
Opening Hours: 1pm-11:30pm
Price: $$$
My Rating: ★★★★
Menu & Website
Society Ahangama is a South Indian restaurant, and while they’re open for breakfast and I’ve heard their coffee and brunch are great, I only went for dinner—and it was great.
I had the pulled pork dosa (basically a crispy South Indian wrap, kind of like a crepe-meets-pita situation), and it was absolutely delicious. I also tried the mutton rolls to start, and those were the standout for me—super flavorful and perfectly spiced. Can’t say much about the cocktails since I only had a beer, but I watched the bartender shake up a few and immediately had cocktail regret. They looked amazing. Next time, I’m ordering one for sure.

12. Hotel de Uncles // Local Classic for Cocktails
Opening Hours: 11am-12am
Price: $$$
My Rating: ★★★★
Menu & Website
Hotel de Uncles is basically an institution in Ahangama—and in Sri Lanka in general—so it would’ve felt wrong not to include them.
This is the kind of place I’d come to for a sunset drink or maybe even a chill date night. It’s right on the beach (another epic sunset spot), and their cocktails are probably some of the best in town. The espresso martini is especially good, but I also tried the island sour, which I’d 100% recommend. They’ve got a happy hour from 3–5 pm, so plan accordingly.
Food-wise, the mutton rolls are a must-try. If you haven’t had them before, they’re a classic Sri Lankan snack—a kind of deep-fried roll filled with spiced mutton (sheep meat), and they’re delicious.

13. Follow the White Rabbit // Best Restaurant for Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Opening Hours: 6:30am-10:30pm
Price: $$$
My Rating: ★★★★
Menu & Website
Follow the White Rabbit is one of the most well-known places in Ahangama—and for good reason. It’s got a gorgeous location, with part of the restaurant right on the oceanfront patio, and the rest just across the main road with both indoor and upstairs seating.
I’ve been here for both breakfast and dinner, and both were way better than expected. Breakfast is always a hit, but dinner surprised me in the best way. I had their prawn pasta with a glass of white wine, watched the sunset, and had one of those perfect little evenings.
It’s super central, easy to find, and just a great all-rounder. If you’re looking for a reliable dinner spot in town, this is it.

14. Trax Ahangama // Best for Nightlife in Ahangama
Opening Hours: 7pm-1:30am
Price: $$$
My Rating: ★★★★
Menu & Website
Most people know Trax as the place to go for a night out—and I’d agree. When they’ve got a DJ on the weekend, it turns into an absolutely fun party spot.
But honestly, it’s also a great cocktail bar even earlier in the day or on quieter nights. They serve amazing cocktails and have some tasty small plates like hummus and pita, all served in their cute little garden area. Definitely recommend if you’re looking for a chill drink spot without the full-on party vibe.

15. Alaia by The Hotel
Opening Hours: 8am-10pm
Price: $$$$
My Rating: ★★
Menu & Website
Okay, so this one I debated putting on the list at all—honestly, it might even belong on a “where not to go” list. You’ll probably have to check it out for yourself and make your own decision.
Alaia definitely wins in terms of looks—it’s probably the closest thing Ahangama has to a beach club. There’s a pool, comfy sunbeds, and a prime beachfront location. That alone might be worth it if that’s the kind of vibe you’re after and you’re not fussed about the price.
But… it’s wildly overpriced. It’s the only place I’ve seen in Ahangama with prices listed in US dollars. And for what? The vibe feels off—like it’s trying too hard to be something it’s not. In my opinion, it goes against the laid-back, soulful feel that Sri Lanka’s beach towns (and Ahangama especially) are known for.
So yeah—if you’re specifically looking for a beach club, it might be your thing. But it felt kind of soulless to me and more like a business venture than a place with real character.

FAQs About the Best Restaurants in Ahangama
Where has the best breakfast in Ahangama?
Oof, hard one. But if I had to pick, I’d say Cactus is my favorite—super tasty food and the location is just unbeatable, especially on a sunny morning. That said, The Kip and Sundays are also really great choices. If you’re after more breakfast recommendations, check out my full guide on the best cafes in Ahangama.
What are the top rooftop restaurants in Ahangama?
There actually aren’t that many, but my top pick is definitely Mavi Rooftop. The sunset views are amazing, and they serve quality cocktails and nice cold beers—so, pretty much everything you want in a rooftop spot.
Does Trax Ahangama serve food?
I wouldn’t go there expecting a full dinner menu, but they do have some great small plates—think hummus and pita-style dishes. I usually head there after dinner for cocktails or on nights when I know there’ll be a DJ and a proper party going on.
Where to go in Ahangama for lunch?
My go-to lunch spot is Sundays. Their tofu bowl with veggies, rice, and teriyaki sauce hits the spot every time. It’s one of those meals that actually makes you feel good after—not like the heavy burrito or burger crash (you know what I mean).
Final Thoughts on Where to Eat in Ahangama
All in all, I really love the food scene in Ahangama. Even though it developed a bit later than Mirissa or Weligama, I honestly think it’s better now. There’s an awesome mix of cute brunch cafés, beachfront cocktail bars, and genuinely good dinner restaurants.
Every place I’ve listed above is one I’ve personally been to—some more than once—so these recommendations are all based on my own experience. I wouldn’t include anything I didn’t actually try myself. I hope you have the best time eating your way through Sri Lanka. Happy travels—and happy feasting.
