Sri Lanka Travel Itinerary 10 Days: Our Incredible Sri Lanka Adventure (Updated 2025)

Last Updated on March 6, 2025 by Oliver

Sri Lanka, the stunning island nation in the Indian Ocean, is quickly becoming a must-visit destination for all types of travelers! Sure, backpackers and surfers have been flocking here for years, but now you’ll find families, nature lovers, digital nomads, and pretty much everyone else drawn to its beautiful beaches, incredible Sri Lankan food, lush tea plantations, and breathtaking national parks.

I’m one of those people! I spent three unforgettable months in Sri Lanka, exploring, adventuring, and honestly, living my best life. With all that time soaking up everything this amazing country has to offer, I think I’ve got a pretty solid idea of the must-see spots and what makes a killer Sri Lanka itinerary.

This guide (Sri Lanka Travel Itinerary 10 Days)is all about helping you create your perfect 10-day adventure. Whether you’re dreaming of lazy days on Mirissa Beach, trekking up Little Adam’s Peak, or something in between, I’ve got you covered. I’ve put together a few awesome itineraries, so you can mix and match to fit your vibe.

Do I Need a Visa When I Visit Sri Lanka?

First things first, let’s get the nitty-gritty stuff out of the way. While Sri Lanka is super welcoming to visitors from all over the world, you do need a tourist visa before entering. Thankfully, it’s an easy process—you can apply online and receive your 30-day visa in just a few days.

The only thing to be careful about is making sure you’re on the right website, which is this one: (https://eta.gov.lk/slvisa/). It looks a little low-budget, but that’s where you’ll pay the correct price. There are a few agencies out there that will charge you way more for the same outcome. You can even extend your visa online for up to 90 days.

How Do I Get Around When Visiting Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka has a few options when it comes to getting around the country, and each one offers something unique. Here are some of the main ways to get around:

Tuk-Tuk: These three-wheeled vehicles are iconic in Sri Lanka and offer an adventurous and budget-friendly way to explore cities and towns. Just be sure to negotiate the price before hopping on board.

Train: The train system in Sri Lanka is known for its scenic routes, with trains passing through lush green hills, tea plantations, and seaside views. This is a must-do experience during your visit!

Local Bus: For a more budget-friendly option, buses are a popular way to travel between cities and towns. They can be crowded and chaotic at times, but it’s a great way to save some money.

Private Driver: If you prefer more comfort and convenience, hiring a private driver is a great option. You can customize your itinerary and have the luxury of air-conditioned transportation.

What Is the Currency in Sri Lanka?

Let’s talk money! Sri Lanka’s currency is the Sri Lankan rupee (LKR), and it’s super easy to exchange your cash when you arrive—just pop into any bank or currency exchange office. During my time in Sri Lanka, I found it handy to use a mix of cash and credit cards. Honestly, it’s pretty straightforward to figure out where you can use your card and where you’ll need cash.

Here’s the deal: All those trendy, Instagram-worthy cafes and restaurants (you know, the ones clearly catering to tourists) almost always accept credit cards. But if you’re heading to a local market, grabbing a bite from street food vendors, or eating at a local eatery, it’s best to have some cash on hand.

How Should I Dress When Visiting Sri Lanka?

Figuring out what to wear in Sri Lanka can be split into two parts: respecting the local culture and dressing for the climate. Trust me, it’s not all beaches and sunshine here, so packing smart makes a world of difference!

Let’s talk culture first. Down on Sri Lanka’s south coast, where the beach towns vibe is super chill, you’ll see people in shorts, sundresses, and even bikinis. No one really bats an eye—it’s all very relaxed. But if you’re visiting temples or heading up to the more traditional and religious northern regions, things change a bit. Modesty is key! That means covering your shoulders and knees out of respect for local traditions. Personally, I always keep a sarong or wrap handy—it’s an absolute lifesaver for covering up when needed, plus it doubles as a great beach towel!

Now for that tropical climate. Southern Sri Lanka is hot and humid, so lightweight, breathable clothes are a must. Pack flowy dresses, linen pants, and comfy tanks. But don’t be fooled—if you’re heading to the highlands in central Sri Lanka, like Ella or Nuwara Eliya, it can get surprisingly chilly! Foggy mornings and cooler evenings mean you’ll definitely want a jacket and maybe a pair of cozy pants. I learned that the hard way!

Sri Lanka Travel Itinerary 10 Days for all the Highlights

This first itinerary is perfect for those short on time but eager to experience all the highlights of Sri Lanka. While it may feel a bit fast-paced, for many, visiting Sri Lanka is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and you’ll want to make the most of it by seeing all the incredible sights.

Day 1: Colombo

You’ll likely be flying into Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo, so getting here early is key to making the most of your day in Sri Lanka’s capital.

Start your morning with a fantastic breakfast at Black Cat Cafe—hands down the best coffee in town (in my opinion). Their breakfast sandwiches are great too, and it’s a perfect spot for digital nomads to get some work done.

Next, head to the Colombo National Museum. It’s a must-visit to dive into Sri Lanka’s colonial history and get insight into the country’s civil war.

In the afternoon, explore Pettah Market for some shopping and don’t miss the stunning Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque. Wrap up your day with dinner at the Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct in Colombo Fort—great food and a lovely atmosphere!

Day 2-3: Kandy

On the second day, catch an early train from Colombo Fort Station to Kandy (it takes about 6 hours). Make sure you book a first-class ticket with reserved seats well in advance! If not, you’ll be crammed in economy with hundreds of people, which can be pretty uncomfortable.

Kandy is a stunning city surrounded by lush green hills and is home to the famous Temple of the Tooth Relic, where Buddha’s sacred tooth is kept. Spend your first day exploring the temple and wandering through the local markets—you’ll love the buzz of the city.

While you’re there, don’t miss a trip to the nearby botanical gardens. It’s such a relaxing spot, perfect for soaking in the scenery. On your second day, take a tuk-tuk ride up to the Bahiravokanda Vihara Buddha statue for amazing views of the city.

For food, I have to recommend Hideout Lounge for lunch or dinner—it’s such a great spot and absolutely worth a visit!

Day 4: Sigiriya (Lion Rock)

On your fourth day, make your way to Sigiriya, best known for its iconic Lion Rock. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a stunning example of ancient urban planning, and the views from the top are absolutely breathtaking.

At the summit, you’ll find the ruins of a royal palace and fortress, along with beautifully preserved frescoes that have stood the test of time. Be ready for a bit of a workout as there are plenty of stairs to climb—but trust me, it’s worth every step!

The easiest way to explore Sigiriya in a day is by booking a tour. It saves you the hassle of navigating the local buses and ensures you can focus on enjoying the experience. Click here to book a guided day tour to Sigiriya and Lion Rock.

Day 5-6: Nuwara Eliya

You’ve probably heard of the famous Kandy to Ella train ride. Most people call it that because they skip over Nuwara Eliya entirely—but trust me, the most stunning scenery is actually between Kandy and Nuwara Eliya. Make sure to reserve a ticket in advance and sit on the right side of the train for unbeatable views.

Skipping Nuwara Eliya is a missed opportunity, so plan to spend at least two days here. Known as “Little England” for its colonial charm and cooler climate, this town is truly one-of-a-kind.

Don’t miss out on visiting the Grand Hotel for their incredible high tea experience. For just $30, you’ll enjoy unlimited tea, coffee, and an assortment of classic English finger foods.

Another must-do in my book is to take a tour of the tea plantations (**Book Tour Here**) to learn about the region’s rich tea culture and sample loads of tea and snacks.

Day 7-8: Ella

Ella is an absolute dream for outdoor lovers! If you’re into hiking, stunning views, and a little adventure, this spot is going to steal your heart. There’s so much to do, but here’s how I tackled it:

On Day 1, start with a hike up to Ella Rock. It’s fairly easy and totally worth it for the incredible views at the top. The trail is peaceful, and you’ll feel so accomplished once you reach the summit.

For Day 2, set your alarm early—like, really early—and head to Little Adam’s Peak for sunrise. Start walking around 4 AM to give yourself time to reach the top before the sun peeks out. Don’t worry, most of the trail is a stairway, so it’s easier than it sounds.

After soaking it all in, you can head back down and cross the road to start the short, shady trail to the famous Nine Arch Bridge. This walk is super easy and takes you right through the woods. Pro tip: stick around for a bit because trains pass about every hour.

Day 9: Yala National Park

Okay, here’s a game-changing tip for your Sri Lanka adventure: from Ella, you can book a tour that takes you straight to Yala National Park and then drops you off at Hiriketiya Beach afterward (your next stop!). Seriously, this is such a time-saver and makes everything so much easier. Trust me, it’s worth it!

Yala National Park is only a half-day trip, but wow—what an experience. Hands down, it was the absolute highlight of my entire Sri Lanka trip! Yala is home to elephants, leopards, and so much more, and guess what? We were lucky enough to see both! Here’s my advice: book your tour for early in the morning (the animals are more active then), cross your fingers for an awesome driver/Safari guide, and get ready for some unforgettable wildlife sightings.

Days 10-12: Hiriketiya Beach

If you’re exploring Sri Lanka’s southern coast and have limited time, my advice is to pick one beach town to really soak it all in—and for me, that’s Hiriketiya Beach.

This spot is an absolute dream. Unlike some of the more touristy beach towns, Hiriketiya still feels like a hidden gem. It’s small, laid-back, and completely charming. There are only a few boutique hotels with character, yoga studios where you can stretch out the travel stress, cozy little cafés, and a few surf camps.

Honestly, I fell so in love with this place that I ended up staying for an entire month—it’s that magical.

Sri Lanka Travel Itinerary 10 Days for Beautiful Beaches

Honestly one of the things that draws so many tourist to Sri Lanka is the beautiful beaches and the tropical atmosphere. So i cant blame you if you come to sri lanka and all you do is, hang out by the beach, go surfing and drink smoothies all day long. and for y’all i have the perfect itinerary.

Day 1-2: Galle

On this trip, we’re skipping Colombo and heading straight from Bandaranaike International Airport to Galle. You can hop on a scenic train ride (highly recommended for the views!) or grab a super affordable taxi if you prefer convenience.

Galle is an absolute gem—a charming colonial town with so much history thanks to the Dutch influence. The highlight here is the stunning Galle Fort, a beautiful remnant of colonial times, and the iconic lighthouse.

This town is made for wandering. Stroll through its small cobblestone streets, pop into local art galleries, chill out in adorable little cafes, and treat yourself to some unique shopping finds.

Day 3-5: Ahangama

Ahangama is easily one of my favorite beach towns in Sri Lanka! While Mirissa usually steals the spotlight, Ahangama has always been the quietest of the trio (Ahangama, Weligama, and Mirissa) and, honestly, that’s part of its charm.

Because it didn’t get the same level of attention, Ahangama has grown into this super cool, laid-back spot that hasn’t been overrun by tourists. Now, it’s full of amazing boutique hotels, trendy cafes, and some of the chillest bars around. If you’ve ever been to Bali, it gives off major old-school Canggu vibes from back in the day!

Whether you’re into yoga retreats, relaxing spa days, or even trying a crafting class, Ahangama has something for everyone. It’s the perfect place to slow down and soak up the good vibes while still having plenty to do when the mood strikes.

Check out Cactus and Thilenis! Cactus is perfect for breakfast, coffee, and lunch, while Thilenis is the go-to spot for dinner and sunset drinks.

Day 6-8: Mirissa Beach or Weligama

Just 30 minutes down the coast by scooter, you’ll find Mirissa. Along the way, you’ll pass through Weligama, another awesome beach town. Honestly, you can’t go wrong with either, so pick one or stay somewhere in between and explore both.

Weligama is a surfer’s paradise, especially if you’re just starting out. The waves here are super beginner-friendly, making it the perfect spot to grab a board and give it a try. Surf camps like Layback Weligama and Kuma Surf Camp are amazing options with friendly vibes and expert instructors. After an early surf session, head straight to Nomad Cafe for breakfast or lunch.

Mirissa, on the other hand, has a livelier vibe with more nightlife, bars, and restaurants. If you’re in the mood for some evening fun, this is the place to be. One of the absolute highlights here is Coconut Tree Hill, and if you’re up for a little adventure, make the trek to Secret Beach. It’s a bit of a hike, but wow, it’s so worth it.

Day 9-10: Hiriketiya Beach

Hiriketiya Beach stole my heart—it’s hands down my favorite stop on this Sri Lanka itinerary! It might not be everyone’s vibe, but I absolutely fell in love with its charm. Compared to the busier beach towns, this place is small and so much quieter. Here, you’ll find just a handful of boutique hotels, cozy coffee shops, yoga shalas, a few hostels, and some absolutely epic surf.

What’s really cool is that it’s also a bit of a digital nomad hotspot, thanks to two co-living spaces in the area.

I can’t recommend visiting here enough. Seriously, if you’re into chill vibes and untouched beauty, now’s the time to go. You can already see more buildings popping up in the jungle, and I have a feeling this beach town’s small, intimate vibe might not last forever.

My top recommendations while you’re there:

Day 11-12: Arugam Bay

Next, make your way to the east coast of Sri Lanka and discover Arugam Bay, the country’s surfing capital that attracts wave riders from across the globe. Even if surfing isn’t your thing, Arugam Bay has plenty to offer. Explore nearby national parks and lagoons, or simply relax on its breathtaking beaches.

That said, Arugam Bay is a bit off the beaten path, so if it doesn’t fit into your plans, don’t worry—there are plenty of other gorgeous beach towns to enjoy.

Sri Lanka Travel Itinerary 10 Days for National Parks & Safaris

This Sri Lanka itinerary is perfect for those who are all about the safaris and national parks—and I totally get it! They’re incredible, and Sri Lanka has so many to explore. That said, visiting only national parks might feel a bit intense. If that’s the case, you can always swap Udawalawa National Park for one of the coastal beach towns like Ahangama or Hiriketiya. Then, make your way to Yala National Park from there.

Day 1-3: Udawalawe National Park

Start your adventure at Udawalawe National Park—aka the ultimate spot for elephant lovers. This place is famous for its massive herds of Asian elephants. Spend a couple of days here and go on as many safaris as you can to boost your chances of spotting these gentle giants. There’s nothing like seeing a group of 10-15 elephants all together in one spot—it’s pure magic. While you’re at it, keep an eye out for other wildlife like water buffalo, leopards, and tons of colorful birds.

Here’s the thing: if you’re debating between Udawalawe and Yala, let me tell you—Udawalawe is the place to be for elephants. Yala is great, but you’ll usually just see smaller groups there. Insider tip: Book those safaris early!

Udawalawe is super popular (and for good reason), so make sure to book your safari tours ahead of time to lock in your spot. Book your safari right here.

Elephants in Yala National Park

Day 4-6: Yala National Park

Yala National Park is one of the most popular parks in Sri Lanka, and for good reason! It offers the highest chances of spotting leopards and elephants compared to other national parks. However, its popularity also means it can get quite busy.

When we visited, there was a long queue of safari trucks waiting for the park gates to open in the morning. Luckily, we were near the front of the line. Yala is an incredible place, and seeing elephants and leopards here is truly unforgettable. That said, if you’ve already been lucky enough to spot these animals at another park, you might consider skipping Yala to avoid the crowds and high costs.

Overall, it’s a fantastic experience and worth visiting if you’re eager for another chance to see these magnificent creatures up close!

Day 7-9: Horton Plains National Park

Need a break from the safari vibes? Horton Plains National Park is the perfect change of scenery! This place is absolutely breathtaking, with its rolling landscapes and the jaw-dropping World’s End viewpoint. If you’re into birdwatching or spotting wildlife, you’ll love it here—there are all kinds of birds, big stags, and even wild boar roaming around.

Unlike the other national parks, which feel like something straight out of an African safari, Horton Plains has a totally different vibe. It’s more like hiking through Montana! There’s no jumping in and out of safari trucks here—instead, you’re on foot, soaking in the crisp mountain air and exploring scenic trails that lead to some of the most stunning views in Sri Lanka. It’s such a nice change of pace and climate, especially after a few days of bumpy jeep rides.

Day 10-12: Wasgamuwa National Park

Tucked away between the central and northern provinces of Sri Lanka, this national park is a hidden gem that most tourists never visit. It’s out of the way and off the beaten path, meaning the only people you’ll bump into here are locals and a few adventurous travelers. Fun fact: this place is known as “the land of the bears,” and once you spot one, you’ll see why—they’re absolutely adorable (if you’re lucky enough to catch a glimpse, that is)!

Wasagamuwa, of course, is also popular for its elephants. Here, you can see huge herds of elephants if you’re lucky.

Day 1-3: Kandy & Adam’s Peak

Arrive in Colombo and head straight to Colombo Fort Station to catch a train to Kandy. Located in the Sri Lankan highlands, Kandy is a perfect starting point for exploring the surrounding mountains. While you’re there, be sure to visit Kandy Lake and try local Sri Lankan dishes like Kottu Roti and Hoppers!

On day three, wake up early to take on the challenge of climbing Adam’s Peak. This iconic mountain is famous for its sacred footprint, believed by Buddhists to be that of Buddha himself. The hike takes about 3-4 hours and rewards you with breathtaking views at the summit.

The easiest way to experience this adventure is by booking a guided tour, so you won’t have to worry about transportation or logistics. Book a guided tour here!

Day 4-6: Horton Plains National Park and World’s End

I personally think the best hiking in sri lanka is here in Horton Plains, and it’s definitely worth a visit. This national park is home to some of the most stunning landscapes in Sri Lanka, including Baker’s Falls and World’s End – a cliff with a drop of 4,000 feet! The hike takes about 3-4 hours round trip but be prepared for some steep steps along the way.

Pro tip: start your hike early in the morning to avoid crowds and catch the sunrise at World’s End.

The Perfect 12-Day Sri Lanka Itinerary
Carae at Nince Arch Bride, Ella

Day 7-9: Ella

Ella is the perfect breather after those intense first few days of hiking—think of it as the chill, laid-back buddy of Sri Lanka’s trail scene! The hikes here are much more beginner-friendly, which is exactly what you’ll need after that first week of adventure. Plus, the town itself has such a relaxed vibe, with cozy cafes and restaurants.

While you’re in Ella, don’t miss the hike up to Little Adam’s Peak. It’s an easy trail, but the views are stunning. And then there’s the famous Nine Arch Bridge, where you can head straight after in the morning to see the trains crossing.

Ella’s all about taking it slow, soaking in the views, and recharging for the adventures ahead!

Day 10-12: Wasgamuwa National Park

This itinerary takes you off the beaten path, away from the super touristy spots, and finishes at one of Sri Lanka’s best-kept secrets for wildlife enthusiasts. Wasgamuwa National Park is a hidden gem, offering an incredible elephant-to-tourist ratio. It’s home to an array of wildlife, including elephants, leopards, and countless bird species. The perfect way to end an adventure-filled Sri Lanka journey!

Galle Old Town

12-Day Sri Lanka Itinerary for Culture & History

On my last trip, I had the chance to dive into Sri Lanka’s incredible history, exploring ancient ruins and temples scattered across the country. This is something a lot of tourists miss out on. Places like Anuradhapura are such hidden gems—seriously underrated and absolutely fascinating.

Day 1-2: Colombo

Kicking off your trip in Colombo is such a great idea. This city is the perfect introduction to Sri Lankan culture, with so much to explore. I loved wandering through the museums and galleries—there’s so much history and art to explore. Make sure you visit the Gangaramaya Temple; it’s absolutely stunning and packed with Buddhist art and artifacts that are seriously impressive. Oh, and you can’t leave without a stop at Galle Face Green! It’s the kind of place where you can stroll along the promenade, watch a magical sunset, and snack on some of the best street food ever.

Day 3-4: Anuradhapura

Hop on a train or bus from Colombo to Anuradhapura, where you’ll find ancient ruins dating back over 2000 years. The city was once a capital of Sri Lanka and is now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Renting a bicycle and exploring the sprawling ruins is an absolute must-do here! You can also visit the sacred Bodhi Tree, grown from a cutting of the original tree in India and considered one of the oldest trees in the world.

Day 6-8: Sigiriya & Polonnaruwa

Up next, head to Sigiriya and tackle the climb up the legendary Lion Rock—trust me, the view from the top is beyond incredible and totally worth the effort! Nearby, you’ll find the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, packed with stunning ruins and gorgeous temples that make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Oh, and if you’re up for it, I can’t recommend a hot air balloon ride over the area enough—Book a hot air balloon ride here.

Day 9-10: Kandy

Kandy is another must-visit destination for history buffs. It’s home to the Temple of the Tooth Relic, where a tooth of Buddha is believed to be enshrined. This temple is considered one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in the world and is a major pilgrimage site for Buddhists. While you’re in Kandy, don’t miss out on visiting the beautiful Royal Botanical Gardens or taking a scenic train ride through the lush countryside.

Day 11-12: Galle

Wrap up your Sri Lanka travel in the charming town of Galle. Discover the Dutch Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and wander through the quaint cobblestone streets lined with colonial-era buildings. Relax on nearby beaches and enjoy the spectacular ocean views before heading home.
