The 5 BEST Vienna Christmas Markets to Visit in 2025 (and Which One’s My Favorite)

Finding that spark of Christmas magic as an adult can feel tricky, but Vienna brings it back in full force. Between glowing palaces, the smell of cheesy raclette, and mugs of steaming Glühwein in your hands, it’s the kind of festive atmosphere that makes you feel like a kid again.

I first came here on a family Christmas trip, and the markets were the highlight of our time in the city. Last year, I got to return with a friend who lives locally, which gave me a whole new perspective. Seeing the markets through their eyes made me appreciate just how special (and very Viennese) each one is.

From elegant palace courtyards to smaller squares filled with handmade crafts, Vienna has no shortage of Christmas markets. You’ll likely stumble across a few without even trying, but this guide rounds up the five best to make sure you don’t miss the most magical ones in 2025, complete with dates, times, and all the details.

My Experience at the Vienna Christmas Markets

The first time I visited Vienna at Christmas, I’d already done Christmas markets in Berlin and Hamburg the year before. Still,  I was so excited to show my very American family just how magical European Christmas markets could be. We arrived five days before Christmas, which meant the festivities were in full swing.

Honestly, I think we planned most of our days around how many markets we could squeeze in and how many mugs of Glühwein we could drink.

We checked off the big, popular ones and stumbled into a few smaller markets just by wandering the streets. Then, a few days later, we hopped over to Salzburg and did it all over again. It was genuinely one of the best trips I’ve ever taken.

And luckily for me, it wasn’t the last time I’d get to see Vienna at Christmas. Last year, I came back with one of my best friends who lives locally. Experiencing it with her was a whole new vibe. We went to smaller, lesser-known markets and she showed me exactly what to eat (and drink) at each one.

Now, I’ve pulled it all together for you. Vienna has way more Christmas markets than you could ever see in one trip, but if you’re trying to narrow it down, these five are the best of the best. I’ve personally visited all of them, so here’s a first-hand look at where to go and what to expect.

5 BEST Christmas Markets in Vienna

Vienna at Christmas feels like it was built for the holidays; it might be one of the most beautiful cities I’ve ever seen. The city glows with lights, smells like cinnamon-coated nuts, and every square seems to have its own little winter wonderland.

There are dozens of markets scattered across the city, but these five stand out for their atmosphere, food, and just the right amount of holiday magic.

Here’s my guide to the very best Vienna Christmas Markets for 2025.

Christkindlmarkt at Rathausplatz // The Most Popular Vienna Christmas Market

Dates: November 14 – December 26, 2025
Opening Hours: Sun–Thu: 10:00 – 21:30, Fri–Sat: 10:00 – 22:00
Location: Rathausplatz, in front of Vienna’s City Hall
Website: Christkindlmarkt Rathausplatz

This is the market everyone pictures when they think of Christmas in Vienna. Set against the glowing backdrop of City Hall, it’s the city’s largest and most famous market, with more than 100 stalls selling ornaments, gifts, and every Christmas snack you could dream of.

When I first visited with my family, this was the market that truly made them fall in love with the European Christmas tradition. The air smelled like cinnamon, we wandered between rows of wooden chalets, and collected more souvenir mugs than we could realistically fit in our suitcases.

It can definitely get crowded, especially in the evenings, but it’s worth it for the atmosphere. Sadly, it was a little bit rainy when we visited, but regardless of the drab weather, there were still loads of people out and plenty of places to get warm and dry.

There’s a giant ice skating rink weaving through the park, and the Christmas lights in the trees make the whole place feel like something straight out of a holiday movie. If you only have time for one market in Vienna, this is the one you can’t miss.

Schönbrunn Palace Christmas Market // The Best Christmas Market in Vienna to Visit During the Day

Dates: November 6, 2025 – January 6, 2026
Opening Hours: Daily 10:00 – 21:00 (closes early at 16:00 on December 24, open until 18:00 Dec 25 — January 6)
Location: Schönbrunn Palace Courtyard
Website: Schönbrunn Christmas Market

I’ve been to this market twice now, and while the City Hall one might get all the hype, I think Schönbrunn is my favorite. The palace courtyard transforms into a massive Christmas village, with rows of wooden chalets, plenty of high tables for sipping and snacking, and just enough space that it doesn’t feel overwhelming.

You’ll most likely be visiting Schönbrunn Palace anyway since it’s one of Vienna’s biggest attractions, so stopping by the Christmas market is an easy (and very festive) addition to your day. Beyond the food and mulled wine, there’s ice skating and ice games, a Ferris wheel, carousels with swings, and an overall more lively atmosphere that makes it especially fun if you’re visiting with family or friends.

And once you’ve had your fill of market stalls, you can head inside the palace museum or wander the gardens out back (with a ticket). Between the grand backdrop, the variety of things to do, and the slightly more relaxed vibe compared to Rathausplatz, this market feels like the perfect mix of festive fun and fairytale charm. It’s also one of the only markets open in the New Year!

Belvedere Palace Christmas Market // One of the Best Vienna Xmas Markets Open After Christmas

Dates: November 22 – December 31, 2025
Opening Hours: Mon–Fri: 11:00 – 21:00, Sat–Sun & Holidays: 10:00 – 21:00 (closes at 16:00 on December 24, open until 18:00 on December 31)
Location: Belvedere Palace
Website: Belvedere Christmas Market

The first time I visited Belvedere Palace, I didn’t even realize there was a Christmas market out front; I was just there to see the palace itself, which is one of Vienna’s must-do sights. But the small market set against the baroque façade ended up being the perfect break between tours and sightseeing.

This one holds a special memory for my family. We’ve always known we had German and Austrian roots, and one of the stalls happened to be owned by the Schilchers. Since our last name is Hilcher, we couldn’t help but wonder if there was some connection. Maybe, maybe not, but it was fun to dream while sipping our Glühwein.

Compared to Rathausplatz or Schönbrunn, the Belvedere is a bit quieter and less about kid-friendly rides. Instead, it’s focused on traditional crafts, ornaments, and gourmet food stalls. The highlight, though, is the view; sipping mulled wine with the palace lit up behind you feels like stepping right into a holiday postcard.

Karlsplatz Art Advent Market // Best Viennese Christmas Market for Artisan Gifts

Dates: November 21 – December 23, 2025
Opening Hours: Daily 12:00 – 20:00
Location: Karlsplatz (in front of Karlskirche)
Website: Art Advent Karlsplatz

This is the market where my friend Pia and I spent an entire evening last Christmas. Even though it’s a well-known spot, it felt much more local compared to the bigger markets. The crowd was a mix of artists, families, and groups of friends hanging out, which gave it a more relaxed, neighborhood vibe.

We kicked things off with Glühwein and cider, then eventually switched to beers, turns out there is such a thing as too much mulled wine (it gets really sweet after a while). The stalls here are all focused on handmade, artisan products, so it’s a great place if you want unique gifts instead of mass-produced souvenirs. There is also a live nativity set, with barn animals for kids to feed.

Food-wise, Karlsplatz did not disappoint. Almost everything is advertised as Bio, which means organic. We split spätzle, gooey raclette, and of course a classic Wiener sausage. Between the food, drinks, and the creative energy of the market, this was one of my favorite evenings in Vienna.

Am Hof Christmas Market // Best Christmas Market in Vienna Austria for Unique Food & Drinks

Dates: November 15 – December 23, 2025
Opening Hours: Mon–Thu: 11:00 – 21:00, Fri–Sat: 10:00 – 22:00, Sun & Holidays: 10:00 – 21:00
Location: Am Hof Square, Innere Stadt (Vienna’s Old Town)
Website: Am Hof Christmas Market

We stumbled across this market just wandering through the city, and it ended up being one of the most fun surprises of the trip. Instead of the usual Glühwein, we found steaming hot Aperol Spritz, I know, it sounds questionable, but it was actually delicious and such a refreshing change from all the sweetness. We also found a champagne bar, which gave the whole place a slightly more upscale vibe, very Vienna!

Am Hof itself is one of Vienna’s oldest and most historic squares, once used for jousting tournaments and military parades. These days, it makes for a dramatic backdrop to the market, surrounded by grand buildings and just a short stroll from other landmarks in the city center.

For me, the market here has a more social, laid-back vibe than some of the bigger ones. While there is a whole section for artisan crafts, it was less about shopping and more about hanging out with friends, trying unique drinks, and soaking up the festive mood. And since it’s only a few steps from the Freyung Christmas Market, you can easily double up and make it a two-for-one holiday evening in Vienna’s Old Town.

Tips for Visiting the Best Christmas Markets Vienna has

1. Bring cash (and small bills) — Most stalls are cash only, and it’s easier if you’ve got coins or smaller notes. ATMs are around, but the lines can get long in the evenings.

2. Collect the mugs — Every market has its own festive mug. You’ll pay a small deposit (a few euros), which you get back if you return it. Or, like me, I used these as gifts to bring back home to family!

3. Dress warm (really warm) — Standing around outside in December is no joke. Layers, scarves, and gloves are essential, especially if you plan on staying out after dark.

4. Try the food beyond sausages — Yes, Vienna sausages are a must, but don’t skip the spätzle, raclette, roasted chestnuts, and sweet treats like krapfen (doughnuts).

5. Weekdays are way calmer — If you can, go in the late afternoon on a weekday. You’ll still get the magical lights after dark, but with half the crowds.

6. Mix and match markets —Each one has a different vibe. Some are grand and showy (Rathausplatz), some cozy and creative (Karlsplatz). Plan a few evenings so you can experience more than one.

7. Don’t overdo the Glühwein — It’s delicious but very sweet. Mix it up with punsch, cider, or even a hot Aperol for something different. You can also add in some amaretto for a little for fun! Or spike your hot chocolate, ugh I’m drooling thinking about the chocolatey goodness.

8. Check for special events — All throughout December, markets host extra events like Krampus runs, carol singers, and kids’ activities. Check their websites before you go for opening times and events so you don’t miss anything special happening while you’re in town.

FAQ: Christmas Market Vienna Austria

What are the best Christmas markets in Europe?

That’s a tough one because each city has its own magic. Vienna is one of the absolute best for elegance with palaces and glowing squares. Salzburg feels like a fairy tale with its fortress backdrop. Cologne is known for its cathedral market (huge and dramatic), and Hamburg’s have a bit more of a cozy, northern vibe.

Personally, some of my favorite markets have actually been in small German towns, they don’t have the “big production” feel, but the traditions, food, and sense of community make them extra special.

Where to stay in Vienna near Christmas markets?

If you want to be in the heart of the action, stay in the Innere Stadt (Vienna’s Old Town). You’ll be walking distance from the Rathausplatz market, Am Hof, and Freyung. For something a little quieter but still close, the Naschmarkt area is a great base, plus you’ve got endless food stalls right outside your door.

Here is where I stayed in Vienna at Christmas and loved it! — the Radisson Blu

What is the biggest Christmas market in Vienna?

That would be the Rathausplatz Christmas Market (also called the Vienna Christmas World). It’s massive, with rows of stalls, a skating rink, and a giant lit-up tree in front of City Hall. It’s also the most crowded, so go early in the evening if you want a bit more space to move around.

What dates are Christmas markets in Vienna?

Most markets open around mid-November and run until December 23 or 24. Some even stay open a little longer as “New Year’s Markets.” Exact dates vary by market, so check the official sites if you want to be sure.

Is Vienna Christmas market worth it?

100% yes. Vienna takes the whole Christmas vibe to another level. The settings alone with its palaces, historic squares, and baroque churches make it magical. Add in the food, drinks, and atmosphere, and it’s one of the best cities in Europe for holiday markets.

Final Thoughts on the Best Vienna Christmas Market 2025

If I could, I’d happily spend every December evening in Vienna bouncing from one Christmas market to the next with a mug of something warm in hand. The city just does the holidays so well, from the palaces glowing against the night sky to the smaller squares where locals gather with friends.

If you only have time for one, I’d say start with the Schönbrunn Christmas Market. You’ll probably be visiting the palace anyway, and the courtyard there feels like stepping straight into a holiday postcard. But if you can fit in a few more, each of these markets adds its own little layer of magic to a Vienna Christmas trip.

Whether you’re visiting Vienna with family, friends, or just treating yourself, the markets are the best way to soak up the season. And if you’re wondering how to fit them into a full trip, I’ve put together a 3 Days in Vienna travel guide that maps out the perfect balance of sightseeing and Christmas cheer.
