We originally came to Shkoder just for one night before we started a road trip around the north of the country, but we fell in love with it and ended up staying for four days.

Climb Rozafa Castle for Epic Views

If there’s one spot in Shkoder that’s got history, legends, and unreal views all in one, it’s Rozafa Castle. Perched on a hill just outside the city, this ancient fortress has seen everything—from Illyrians and Romans to Ottomans—and somehow, it’s still standing strong.

But Rozafa Castle isn’t just about old stones and ruins; it comes with a pretty wild legend. The story goes that Rozafa, the wife of one of the builders, was sacrificed within the castle walls so the fortress wouldn’t collapse. Apparently, she accepted her fate as long as part of her body was left exposed so she could still care for her child—weird, I know.

Legends aside, the real reason to come here? The views. From the top, you get this incredible panorama of Lake Shkoder, the Drin and Buna rivers, and even the mountains of Montenegro in the distance. If you can time it for sunset, even better.

If you’re looking for a laid-back way to spend an afternoon, Lake Shkodra is the place to be. It’s the largest lake in the Balkans, stretching all the way into Montenegro, and it’s got that perfect mix of calm waters, fresh air, and a slow, easygoing vibe.

You can rent a bike and ride along the shore, take a boat tour to explore the lake’s hidden corners, or just grab a seat at a lakeside restaurant and enjoy some fresh fish while watching the water. If you’re into birdwatching, keep an eye out—this area is home to some pretty rare species, including Dalmatian pelicans.

On warm days, you might see locals taking a dip in the lake, though the water can be a little chilly. If swimming isn’t your thing, just find a quiet spot, kick back, and enjoy the view—no agenda needed.

Hike from Theth to Valbona (An Absolute Must!)

This was hands-down one of the most unforgettable experiences of our time in Albania. We spent two days in Shkoder, using it as a base before tackling the legendary Theth to Valbona hike—a journey through Theth National Park and some of the most jaw-dropping landscapes in the Balkans.

We left our big luggage in Shkoder (which, by the way, is super easy—most guesthouses will hold onto it for free), packed light, and hopped on a minibus for the bumpy but scenic ride to Theth, a remote mountain village that looks like something out of a postcard. Stone houses, wooden fences, and towering peaks in every direction—it felt like stepping back in time.

The hike itself? Challenging, but 100% worth it. The climb up to Valbona Pass is where you’ll break a sweat, but every time we stopped to catch our breath, we were rewarded with views that didn’t even look real—sharp mountain ridges, deep valleys, and endless greenery. Once we reached the top, we just stood there, soaking up all the natural beauty. It was the kind of view that makes you forget how tired your legs are.

Coming down into Valbona Valley, the landscape shifted—more open, golden fields, cozy guesthouses, and a sense of peace that’s hard to describe. We spent the night in a simple guesthouse, eating hearty mountain food (we’re talking fresh bread, local cheese, and slow-cooked lamb) before heading back to Shkoder the next day via Komani Lake, another adventure in itself.

Take a Boat to Lumi i Shales (The Albanian Maldives)

After finishing the Theth to Valbona hike, we decided to switch things up on the way back to Shkoder and take the scenic route via Komani Lake to Lumi i Shales—and wow, what a detour.

Instead of heading straight back, we hopped on a boat from Fierza to Koman, cruising through deep fjord-like canyons of the Shala River that made us feel like we were somewhere far more exotic. But the real highlight? Lumi i Shales. This place is often called the “Maldives of Albania”, and honestly, it lives up to the hype. The water is impossibly turquoise, the mountain backdrop is surreal, and the whole place feels like a hidden oasis.

Visit the Historic Mesi Bridge

After days of hiking and boating, we were ready for something a little more laid-back, so we rented bikes in Shkoder and cycled out to Mesi Bridge, one of the best-preserved Ottoman bridges in Albania. It’s about 8 km (5 miles) from the city, making it the perfect short ride through the countryside, with mountain views, quiet villages, and a peaceful escape from the city buzz.

You can also catch a bus from the bus station in Shkoder to get closer to the bridge.

The bridge itself? A stunner. With 13 stone arches stretching over the Kir River, it looks like something straight out of a medieval fairytale. The best part? Experience Shkoder’s Artsy Side at the Marubi Photography Museum

We’re all about epic landscapes and outdoor adventures, but sometimes, a little culture break is exactly what you need. Marubi National Museum of Photography turned out to be one of those unexpected gems—a place where you can literally see Albania’s history through the lens of its first photographers.

The museum houses over 500,000 photographs, some dating back to the 1850s, capturing everything from traditional Albanian costumes and historical figures to everyday life in the north. It’s small but beautifully curated, and even if you’re not a huge museum person, the black-and-white portraits alone will pull you in.

For us, it was a cool way to connect with the past and see just how much (or how little) Albania has changed over the years. If you have an hour to spare, it’s totally worth a visit.

Stolia Coffee House & Brunch – The pistachio croissant and latte were out of this world. The outside area is so cute with its string lights and plants. Perfect for a morning coffee or brunch.

Fisi Restaurant – Delicious traditional Albanian food. The lamb was succulent, and they also had plenty of vegetarian options, which isn’t always the easiest to find in Albania! The ambiance is cozy, and the staff is super friendly.

M’Kanda Gelateria – The affogato and cheesecake were to die for. Definitely a must-visit for any ice cream lover.
