Accra is one of those places where as soon as you land you immediately can feel the energy of the city. Ghana’s capital is known for its busy markets, pumping nightlife, delicious food, and friendly locals. It’s no surprise that Accra has become a popular destination for travelers from all over the world.
But if it’s your first time visiting, figuring out where to stay in Accra can be a bit overwhelming. To help you out, we’ve put together this ultimate guide on the best places to stay in Accra for every type of traveler.
Welcome to Accra
Before we jump into the different neighborhoods and areas of Accra, let me introduce you to the city. I lived in Ghana for two years and spent many weekends exploring Accra, so I can confidently say that it’s a city like no other. It’s vibrant, energetic, and full of life.
Accra is divided into several neighborhoods, each with its own unique character and charm. While some areas are more popular with tourists and expats, others offer a more authentic experience of Ghanaian culture.
The city has a tropical climate right on the coast of West Africa, which means it can get quite hot and humid. But with that brings the juiciest fruits, colorful markets, and beautiful beaches.
Whether you’re looking for a luxurious stay or want to experience the local way of life, Accra has something for everyone. So without further ado, let’s dive into the best places to stay in Accra.

Getting Around Accra
Accra is very much a busy city. With bumper-to-bumper traffic on most days, getting around can be a challenge. However, there are plenty of options for transportation that will help you navigate the city with ease.
The most popular mode of transportation is tro-tros, which are small vans that operate as shared taxis. These are affordable and can take you to almost any destination within the city. Just make sure to confirm the price before hopping in.
For a more comfortable ride, you can also use Uber or Bolt (formerly known as Taxify) which operate in Accra. They offer competitive prices and allow for cashless transactions.
You can also hail down taxi drivers, but prepare to negotiate a price before getting in. They will definitely try to upcharge you!
If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also rent a motorbike or car to explore the city at your own pace. (I don’t recommend this as the traffic is chaotic and potholes are everywhere.
Depending on where you stay, you will also have the option of walking to nearby attractions and amenities.
Best Areas to Stay in Accra
Now that you have an idea of how to get around, let’s explore the best areas to stay in Accra. Each neighborhood offers a unique experience and caters to different preferences.
Osu
Osu is my personal favorite place to stay in Accra. Located in the heart of the city, there is always something going on in this neighborhood. From street art to trendy bars and restaurants, there is never a dull moment in Osu.
This area also has a good mix of budget-friendly and luxury accommodation options, making it suitable for all types of travelers. It’s also conveniently located close to attractions such as Independence Square and the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park.
Airport Residential Area
For those seeking a more upscale stay, the Airport Residential Area is an excellent option.
As its name suggests, this affluent neighborhood is close to the Kotoka Airport and features luxurious homes and hotels.
It’s also conveniently located near many international embassies and organizations, making it a popular choice for business travelers.

Labadi
If you’re looking to relax and soak up some sun, Labadi is the place to be. Located on the coastline of Accra, this neighborhood boasts beautiful beaches and resorts.
It’s also home to the Labadi Beach Hotel, one of the city’s most iconic hotels with its own private beach. This is an excellent area to stay in Accra for families. Most of the hotels will have an outdoor pool and family-friendly activities, making it a fun and safe option for kids.
East Legon
If you don’t care too much about going out and prefer a quieter stay, East Legon is the perfect neighborhood for you.
Located North of the Airport Residential Area, East Legon is a residential area with plenty of villas and Airbnb options available.
This is also where many expats choose to live, so there are some excellent international restaurants and cafes in the area.
Cantonments
Cantonments is another upscale neighborhood that offers a mix of residential areas and luxury hotels near the city center. It’s just north of Osu and is a little less rowdy.
It’s known for its wide, tree-lined streets and colonial-style architecture, making it a charming place to stay in Accra.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Accra Safe?
Yes! Accra is safe, with a local culture that is extremely welcoming to travelers. As with any major city, it’s always a good idea to take precautions like avoiding isolated areas at night and keeping an eye on your belongings. But other than that, you can explore and enjoy Accra without worrying too much about safety.
Is Accra Ghana worth Visiting?
Absolutely Accra is worth visiting. The vibes are second to none and it’s the perfect city to introduce you to West African Culture. It’s also a safe and welcoming city with plenty of activities to fill your days.
How long should I spend in Accra?
I recommend spending at least 2-3 days in Accra to fully explore the city and its culture. However, if you have more time, there are many day trips and excursions that can extend your stay in Accra. It all depends on how much time you have and what you want to see and experience during your visit.

What is the best time of year to visit Accra?
The best time to visit Accra is from November to March when rainfall decreases, making it a more comfortable climate for travelers. This is also the peak tourist season, so expect higher prices and larger crowds. If you prefer a quieter trip, visit from April to October when there are fewer tourists and cheaper rates. Just be prepared for more rain during this time. However, Accra is a year-round destination and has something to offer no matter what time of year you visit.
Where to Stay in Accra for Nightlife?
Osu is definitely the place to stay in Accra for the best nightlife. Some of my favorite places to party are The Republic, Bloom, Front/Back (you sometimes need a reservation), Purple Pub, and Sandbox Beach Club.
Is Accra Expensive to Visit?
This depends! Accra can be very expensive if you eat at all the fancy restaurants and stay in luxurious accommodations. However, the local food and public transportation are relatively cheap. You can also book one of the budget-friendly hotels and still have a great stay. Overall, Accra can be affordable for travelers on a budget as long as they are mindful of their spending and plan accordingly.

If we could only choose one place to stay it would be La Villa Boutique Hotel. Located in Osu, the garden and pool are the perfect tropical escape from the city. Plus, it’s a short walk from all the best bars and restaurants in Osu.
