Where to Stay in Bangkok Thailand: My Favorite Areas & Hotels 2026
Bangkok is easily one of the most popular cities in all of Thailand and probably the whole of Southeast Asia, but that doesn’t surprise me. It’s super iconic, everyone knows Bangkok, and it’s the best gateway into the region.
I personally love Bangkok. I know some people aren’t the biggest fans because it can be a lot, but I love how wild and chaotic it is. I really, really enjoy the amazing Thai food here and the beautiful culture tucked away in every corner of the city.
I’ve been to Bangkok multiple times now, and every time I’ve stayed in a different area just so I could really explore.
Bangkok is huge, and figuring out where to stay is not always the easiest! That’s why I’m putting together this guide on where to stay in Bangkok, based on the areas I’ve stayed at myself and recommend, along with some of my favorite hotels.

Where I Stayed in Bangkok Thailand
I’ve visited Bangkok three times now, and every time I’ve had a very different experience. I’ve stayed in different parts of the city and in totally different types of accommodation, mostly because my very first time was about 7 years ago when I was solo backpacking through Thailand.
Back then, I stayed in a super cute hostel called Bed Station. It’s still around and still has great reviews, so it’s definitely a place I’d recommend if you’re looking to make friends and visit Bangkok on a budget.
My two visits after that were quite a bit different, mainly because I wasn’t backpacking anymore. I was on a bigger budget, which meant no more hostels. Don’t get me wrong, I still think hostels are a fantastic way to travel for cheap and meet a ton of people, but I was ready for something else!
On those other visits, I stayed at the Oriental Residence. Wow, it was definitely the most upscale and luxurious hotel I’ve stayed at in Bangkok so far. I was honestly amazed by how fantastic the stay was for the price, and it was still super close to all the sights. If I were coming back specifically for sightseeing, I would 100% stay here again.
Also, the Oriental Residence Bangkok is probably the hotel I would recommend to everyone of you visiting Bangkok for the first time!
On my very last visit, though, I tried something different and stayed in Sukhumvit. It’s a very modern part of the city and is now officially my favorite part of Bangkok.
I stayed at a really nice hotel called Muu Bangkok which had incredible views over the skyline. I just loved being in that area because it’s modern, clean, and feels like a true cosmopolitan city.
It’s packed with cafes, restaurants, parks, and rooftop bars, which is probably why most expats live there. As a digital nomad, whenever I’m back in Bangkok, I will for sure stay in Sukhumvit again.

My 4 Favorite Areas & Hotels in Bangkok
1. Siam District (My Favorite Area to Stay in Bangkok)
One of my absolute favorite areas to stay in whenever I am visiting Bangkok is the Siam Area (or Siam District). In fact, on my very first two visits to Bangkok, this is where I stayed both times and I couldn’t have been happier.
The Siam Area is just outside of Bangkok Old Town, so it’s not right where all the temples and Khao San Road are, but that’s totally fine because in Bangkok you can’t have it all!
Staying close to all the sights while also being in a modern, nice hotel with shopping malls, cafes, and restaurants around all at the same time is basically impossible with how the city is built. I usually pick and choose and try to make the best decision for that specific trip.
By staying in the Siam Area, I am as close as it gets to all the temples, palaces, and Khao San Road without being stuck in the middle of the noise. Also, I can take a water taxi for about 50 cents and be in the Old Town in 15 minutes, so it’s super easy.
At the same time, I’m also close to Lumpini Park and loads of nice little cafes and restaurants. I just love having access to that more modern side of Bangkok, which you don’t really get in the Old Town part (where the Grand Palace and Khao San Road are located).

My Favorite Hotels to Stay in the Siam Area:
Oriental Residence Bangkok
I’ll be honest: from my own experience in Bangkok, I have to say that the Oriental Residence is the best hotel for a first-time visitor and let me tell you why.
For a start, the hotel is incredible and so luxurious. The staff was so friendly to me; they helped me with my luggage, organized my pick-ups, and even gave me some awesome food recommendations for the area.
The location is perfect because it’s a really nice neighborhood while still being close enough to the Old Town where all the temples and palaces are. On top of all that, it’s such a steal, I can’t believe this is a 5-star hotel in Bangkok, and I’ve paid less than $200 USD a night, which is just crazy to me!

Bed Station Hostel
The total opposite to the one above is this one: Bed Station Hostel. To this date, it’s one of the best hostels I’ve stayed at. The hostel is super clean with free coffee, friendly staff, and super comfortable beds, plus it’s in a great location.
When I stayed there, I only had to walk 5 minutes to the canal, grab a boat taxi, and 15 minutes later, I was in Old Town – super easy.
I’d highly recommend this if you want a social environment; it’s a nicer, more upscale hostel, and if you aren’t into a hardcore party vibe, then this is the right place for you. I know many hostels in Bangkok can be super trashy and party-heavy, but this one definitely felt more grown-up.

2. Phra Nakhon District / Old Bangkok (My Top Area in Bangkok for Sightseeing)
One of the most popular areas people want to stay in is definitely Phra Nakhon, also known as “Old Bangkok.”
This is the part of the city where pretty much everything touristy is happening, from iconic temples like Wat Arun, Wat Pho, and the Grand Palace, to the famous Khao San Road and its legendary nightlife.
If you are in Bangkok for just a few days and want to get all the big highlights checked off, I would 100% recommend staying in this area. You can do a massive amount of your sightseeing just by walking around from your hotel, which will definitely save you a lot of time and hassle with transport.
The only struggle I have with Phra Nakhon is that because it’s so old, there aren’t many truly great hotels around. Whenever I plan on staying here, I sometimes find it a nice modern 4 or 5 star hotel in this part of Bangkok.
My Favorite Hotels in Old Bangkok:
Priya Boutique House
I actually had planned on staying here on my last visit to Bangkok when my mom came to visit. We had a ton of sightseeing on the agenda, so the location would’ve been perfect.
Priya Boutique House is just a super cute, affordable little spot with such a pretty, thoughtful design, I think I genuinely would’ve loved it!
Unfortunately, it was completely booked out when I was there, but it’s definitely on my list for next time.

Lobsuek Hostel
Bangkok is a total backpacker hub, which is why there are so many hostels here. As I’ve mentioned, I still think hostels are a fantastic way to travel on a budget. Lobsuek is easily one of the nicest and most modern hostels in Bangkok, featuring amazing common areas and a really cool rooftop.
Also, many hostels, including Lobsuek, offer regular private hotel rooms as well as dorms. So, if you’re traveling on a budget but still want that social vibe and the chance to meet people without actually sleeping in a dorm, booking a private room in a hostel is such a solid option!

3. Sukhumvit District ( I Would Stay Here as a Digital Nomad)
The Sukhumvit area is officially one of my new favorite places to stay in Bangkok. This is where I stayed on my very recent visit after some friends who live in the city recommended it to me and honestly, I loved it.
Sukhumvit felt a lot more like Singapore in a sense; it’s much cleaner, more modern, less chaotic, and packed with amazing international restaurants, cafes, and some super cool rooftop bars.
For me, as someone who stayed in Bangkok for a whole week and had some work to get done, it was perfect. If I ever come back just to hang out or to live here for a while working from my laptop, there is no doubt I’ll be staying here again.
I have to admit, it’s not the best location for sightseeing since it’s a bit further away from the historic center, but if you care more about modern city life and less about temple-hopping, I think this is one of the best areas to stay.
My Favorite Hotels in Sukhumvit:
Muu Bangkok
I stayed at Muu Bangkok on my last visit because I wanted somewhere nicer and more modern. Since I’d already done most of the big sightseeing on previous trips, I preferred staying somewhere where I could have proper city life, a nice pool, and a bit of comfort. Muu Bangkok was absolutely perfect for that.

Skyview Hotel Bangkok
Another hotel I had thought about booking was Skyview because it has that whole high-rise city vibe I was looking for at the time.
The rooms have amazing views over the Bangkok skyline, and the hotel even has a rooftop pool, which is so cool. It’s definitely on the more expensive side, which is why I didn’t end up staying there, but it’s a super cool option if you want to treat yourself.

4. Chinatown & Song Wat Road
Even though I have never stayed in this particular part of town myself, I’ve spent loads of time here during my stays, and I’m pretty sure I’d absolutely love staying here.
Chinatown, as well as Song Wat Road, are located kind of between the Old Town and the Siam area, right by the river. I usually come to Chinatown by night for all its cheap street food and roadside restaurants and I personally just love a good Chinatown where I can sit on the side of the road, have some awesome food and a cold beer, and just people-watch.
Right one street over is Song Wat Road, which is pretty much the opposite vibe; it’s actually kind of hipster! I only found out about it on my most recent stay. There are loads of vintage shops and cool cafes there. When I was there, they even had a bunch of Stranger Things promotions happening, which was pretty awesome.
My Favorite Hotels Around Chinatown Bangkok
Shanghai Mansion Bangkok
From my own research, I think Shanghai Mansion is one of the most upscale hotels in the area, but the price per night is fantastic considering it’s a 4-star boutique hotel. It’s right in the heart of Chinatown, so if you love a bit of action, good food, and a lively atmosphere, this is definitely the spot.
What I personally find pretty cool about Shanghai Mansion is the decor, it’s very “themed,” and I personally love it when my hotel matches the vibe of the destination I’m in.

Hostel Urby
I personally enjoy a good, quirky hostel, and even though I’m rarely staying at hostels myself nowadays, I think I have a good idea of what a good one looks like, and Hostel Urby looks really nice.
The dorms seem spacious and comfortable, the location is amazing because it’s right on the river at Song Wat Road, and it even has an upstairs terrace with immediate river views, beanbags, and hammocks to chill in. It seems super cool!

FAQs About Where to Stay in Bangkok Thailand
What is the best hotel in Bangkok, Thailand?
Bangkok has loads of amazing hotels and obviously I haven’t stayed at every single one of them. That said, I’ve tried a few, and I have to say the Oriental Residence Bangkok was by far one of the best hotels I’ve ever stayed at, it offers amazing value for money and a truly luxurious feel.
What is the best area in Bangkok?
My favorite area is the Siam Area, especially if you’re visiting for the first time. It’s perfect because I can easily get to the Bangkok Old Town to visit all the temples, Khao San Road, and the Grand Palace, but I’m still close to the more modern part of Bangkok with all its amazing cafes, shopping, and restaurants.
Is Bangkok expensive to visit?
Yes and no. I visited Bangkok for the first time about 7 years ago when it was crazy cheap. While food, for instance, is still pretty affordable, I have to say that accommodation has definitely gotten more expensive over the years. However, in the grand scheme of things, it’s still very cheap compared to major Western cities.
Is Bangkok worth visiting?
Absolutely! In fact, Bangkok is one of my favorite cities in all of Asia. It has incredible sightseeing, a beautiful culture, and some of the best food in all of Thailand. So yes, it’s 100% worth visiting.
Is Bangkok safe to visit?
All in all, I would say yes, Bangkok is definitely a safe city for the most part. However, in areas around Khao San Road, I personally am a little more careful; especially since some side streets in that area are red-light districts, so be mindful of which roads you turn down.
Final Thoughts on The Best Places to Stay in Bangkok
I do think that in Bangkok, it’s fairly important to choose the right area because the city is so big. I definitely want to urge you not to just type “Bangkok” into Booking.com and pick a hotel based solely on price; you might end up staying in the middle of nowhere!
It’s like trying to find a hotel in New York City but accidentally booking something in Queens, if that makes sense.
I personally make sure to stay in the Siam area; that way, I get a bit of everything. I can stay in a nice hotel, remain close to all the main sights, and still have easy access to the more modern parts of Bangkok.
I hope that my little guide on where to stay in Bangkok gives you a good idea of the best area and the perfect hotel for your trip!
