Let’s talk about Fremantle—my favorite suburb in Perth! Some might disagree, but I’m sticking to my guns here. Having lived in Fremantle for over a year, I wouldn’t change a thing!
Fremantle, located in Western Australia, is the ultimate hipster-hippie haven, and it’s by far the most interesting spot to stay in Perth. It’s packed with history, culture, and stunning beaches. On top of that, there are so many amazing cafes and restaurants that I might have put on a few extra pounds while living there—but it was totally worth it!
In this guide, I’ll share all you need to know about where to stay in Fremantle, including the best hotels, areas, and some of the coolest spots and activities around.
Where to stay in Fremantle – Best Fremantle Hotels
Warders Hotel Fremantle Markets
One of my favorite hotels in Fremantle is definitely Warders Hotel. It’s located within a historic building that used to serve as staff accommodation for the famous Fremantle Prison. Now, it’s a stunning boutique hotel right next to the Fremantle Markets.
The National Hotel
The National Hotel is one of the most popular addresses in Fremantle, primarily for its bar and rooftop, which are extremely popular. Before booking, be aware that the hotel can be busy. The rooms are beautiful and modern, making it the perfect place to stay for a fun time in Fremantle. It is also within walking distance of Bathers Beach and the Fremantle Passenger Terminal.
Rialto Suites Fremantle
If you’re on a budget or traveling with a larger group, I can highly recommend Rialto Suites Fremantle. Their apartments are located right in the Fremantle city centre and are perfect for a long-term stay with a bigger group. They come with a full kitchen and can accommodate up to six people.
Where to stay in Fremantle – Best Areas
Fremantle, as I’ve already mentioned, is my favorite area/city in Perth and Western Australia in general. It is actually its own little town and the oldest town in Perth, known for its historic architecture, vibrant art scene, and delicious food.
If you’re visiting for the first time, I definitely recommend staying in the Fremantle City Centre. Everything is within walking distance, and you’ll have a great time to explore Fremantle.
If you’re in the mood for a more laid-back beach town, then South Fremantle is my go-to. It’s quieter, with charming cafes and boutique shops right by South Beach.
Families will enjoy North Fremantle. It’s less busy and more residential but still has that distinct Fremantle vibe.
And if you want to stay a bit further out, East Fremantle by the river is my top choice.
Where to Stay in Fremantle for the First Time: Central Fremantle
Central Fremantle is where I used to live, and it’s honestly the perfect spot, whether you’re looking to settle down or just visiting as a tourist. This charming old town is where the action happens. With its beautiful historic buildings—where English settlers built their first settlement, including the Fremantle Prison—you’ll realize that there is, in fact, some culture and history in Australia.
Central Fremantle is buzzing with art galleries, cozy cafes, top-notch restaurants, and endless activities. You can hop on a train directly from Perth CBD, and before you know it, you’ll be right in the middle of everything at the Fremantle train station.
The cafes and dining scene are kind of a big deal here! Fremantle is a hotspot for cafes and restaurants, and I could go on forever with recommendations. Let me share a few favorites to get you started:
Cafes: Best Wishes, Little French Nest
Lunch: Peggy’s, Gage Roads
Dinner: Vin Populi, Lola’s, Tonic+Ginger
Things to do in Central Fremantle
Apart from stuffing your face with all the food you can find, there are some really awesome things to do in Fremantle. The top hit is definitely the Fremantle Prison (click here for more info and tours), which is part museum, part hostel. You can take all sorts of tours through the prison that are super interesting—everything from regular daytime tours to eerie night tours, and even full-on abseiling adventures through the flooded tunnels beneath the prison.
Another must-see is the Fremantle Markets. They’re one of my absolute favorite things about Freo. Running from Friday to Sunday, they offer a huge range of food, art, crafts, clothing, and basically everything else you could ever want.
If museums are your jam, Fremantle’s got you covered. The Western Australian Maritime Museum dives into Australia’s maritime history and features the famous America’s Cup-winning yacht, Australia II.

The beach area here is super relaxed, with a huge grassy spot right behind it, perfect for chilling all day and having a picnic. You’ll see people doing all sorts of stuff, from relaxing to playing football, jamming on the guitar, or practicing their dancing and slacklining.
Right next to it is the famous South Terrace, where you’ll find loads of awesome bars, restaurants, and cute little boutique shops. It’s like central Fremantle, but everything’s a bit smaller and feels more like a cozy beach town community.

Things to do in South Fremantle
South Fremantle may not be as packed with activities as central Fremantle, but one of my favorite things here is going to the sauna. Yes, you heard it right. It may not be an ideal activity for mid-summer, but if you’re visiting Fremantle during the colder months, a sauna is a great and fun thing to do. The neighborhood sauna is located right on the beach, so you can enjoy a 10-15 minute sauna session and then take a cold plunge in the ocean—it’s so cool!
Another fun thing to do is a bike tour around Fremantle. There are several great companies that offer e-bike tours all around Freo.

The highlight here is definitely the beach! Port Beach and Leighton Beach are my absolute favorites. They’re amazing spots to catch the sunset too. If I’m heading to the beach in the morning, I usually grab a coffee at The Orange Box before hitting the sand.
Pro Tip: Order a pizza to-go from The MRKT Space (the pizza is seriously delicious!), and don’t forget to pick up a bottle of wine or a six-pack of beer for takeaway, also from the Mrkt Space! Where to Stay in Fremantle – Frequently Asked Questions
🏖️ What is there to do in Fremantle?
There are so many things to do in Fremantle, but I think the most popular activities here are definitely a visit to Rottnest Island and a visit to the Fremantle Prison. Both are super fun activities, and Rottnest Island is a must-do on my list. If you have the time and the weather is right, then you honestly have to go for the day.
🛫 How do I get to Fremantle from Perth Airport?
Honestly, save yourself the hassle and just take an Uber. I know it’s expensive because it’s around a 40-minute drive, but the public transport system in Perth is terrible. However, if you are on a budget, there is the option to take a bus or train from the airport straight to Perth city, and from Central Perth Station, you can take the Fremantle train line straight to the Fremantle train station.
🏃♂️ How do I get around in Fremantle?
The great thing about Fremantle is that everything is walkable! Walking around central Fremantle is so easy. Even if you want to head down to South Fremantle, it’s super walkable; I did it all the time. The only time you might want to use public transport is when you’re heading from North Fremantle to South Fremantle, as you’ll have to cross the river.
