I have to say, Granada is hands down my favorite city in Nicaragua, and I bet most of you who’ve been there would agree. This gorgeous colonial town sits right on Lake Nicaragua and is packed with stunning architecture, amazing food, and so many super fun activities. On top of that, you can find some of the best hotels and hostels here in Granada, which are among the best I’ve ever stayed at.
I definitely fell in love with Granada. It’s one of those places where I intended to stay just a couple of days, but guess what? I ended up spending almost two weeks there!

Where to stay in Granada Nicaragua – Best Hotels in Granada
Granada has so many amazing hotels that it’s impossible to show them all here! So, I’m going to stick to the ones I’ve stayed at and truly enjoyed. I’d wholeheartedly recommend them! I know Granada and Nicaragua aren’t yet super popular with holiday tourists, but they’re a hit with backpackers, so I’ve made sure to include my favorite hostels here in Granada too.
Hotel Plaza Colon
One of the most beautiful luxury hotels in Granada is definitely Hotel Plaza Colon. Located in an old colonial mansion, it creates the perfect atmosphere. This stylish hotel offers an outdoor swimming pool in its central courtyard, spacious rooms, free private parking, and free WiFi. It’s also within walking distance of the central park in Granada, which is a big bonus.

Hotel Jardin de Granada
When it comes to luxury hotels in Granada, another fantastic option, in my opinion, is Hotel Jardin de Granada. The hotel features an outdoor pool, a restaurant, and an on-site bar. Here, you can enjoy a spacious room with a private bathroom and air conditioning, all in a central location.

Hostel De Boca en Boca
For all the backpackers out there, one of the most popular hostels in Leon is definitely Hostel De Boca en Boca. This lively hostel offers a great social atmosphere, shared kitchen facilities, and tours, including one to the Masaya Volcano. I’d pick this hostel over a cheap hotel any day.

Oasis Hostel
Another super cool option is Oasis Hostel. I stayed here for quite a while and loved how social and fun the place is. Everyone is super chill, they have an outdoor swimming pool, and there is free breakfast available every morning. They, of course, also offer all sorts of tours and a free shuttle to the treehouse party.

Where to stay in Granada Nicaragua – Best Areas in Granada
Granada is quite similar to many other small colonial cities across Latin America. In my experience, it’s best to stick to the historic center. I understand the urge to explore the real culture and see what the locals are up to, but if you’re a first-time visitor, you’ll find plenty to do just by staying in the city center. Beyond that, it often becomes more residential outside the historic area, and sometimes, it can be a bit less safe.
Where to stay in Granada for the first time: Historic Center (City Center)
The easiest area to stay in Granada, and that’s why I always recommend it for all first-timers, is undoubtedly the historic center.
The main square of Granada, Parque Central (Central Park), is also here, and you can find most things within walking distance from it. This area offers plenty of choices for hotels, hostels, and Airbnb accommodations in all price ranges. You’ll be close to the top attractions like the Cathedral of Granada and Calle La Calzada (a pedestrian street with restaurants, bars, and shops).
Additionally, this is also the prettiest area, with all the colorful colonial buildings, and from my experience, it is by far the safest area to stay in.
Things to do in the Historic Center
The historic center is such a cool spot that you could easily spend a whole day just wandering and exploring. I promise you’ll stumble upon all sorts of little markets, quirky shops, and charming restaurants, easily filling the whole day this way.
Of course, you can’t miss the iconic Granada Cathedral. Climb up to the rooftop terrace for an absolutely stunning view of the city.
Other fun spots to check out include La Merced Church, the San Francisco Convent Art Museum, and Casa de los Tres Mundos, a cultural center showcasing awesome local art and music. While I wouldn’t call these must-sees, if you’re into art and history or looking for something to do on a rainy day, they’re definitely worth it.
Best restaurants in the Historic Center
Morenas: My top choice for a nice, local dinner spot is definitely Morenas. It’s a Nicaraguan steakhouse, serving all types of grilled meats with typical local sides, and it’s super delicious. Definitely a bit pricier, though.
Smiles Coffee: My go-to for a cheap and simple Nicaraguan kitchen is Smiles Coffee. It’s perfect for lunch and breakfast, and you can get a “menu del día,” which is basically the meal of the day, for around US$4.
The Garden Cafe:If you’re craving some international food, especially for breakfast like pancakes or avocado and eggs on toast, then the Garden Cafe is perfect. It’s definitely a little overpriced though.
Where to stay in Granada for families: El Caimito
If you’re traveling with your family, I highly recommend staying in El Caimito. It’s a quiet and safe neighborhood located just outside of the Historic Center, perfect for families looking for some peace and quiet after a busy day exploring.
There are plenty of affordable Airbnb options in this area, as well as some charming boutique hotels. Plus, it’s just a short walk or taxi ride away from all the action in the Historic Center.
Things to do in El Caimito
The Masaya Volcano National Park is one of the top attractions near Granada. I’m sure you can make your way there yourself and just buy a ticket to enter, but I definitely recommend joining a tour because it will make your life so much easier. For a more relaxed day, head to La Calzada. This charming street is lined with restaurants and shops, making it perfect for a leisurely stroll. Visitors can grab some souvenirs or try out local dishes while enjoying the atmosphere.

Pan de Vida: If you’re craving some pizza, I have to say Pan de Vida is the best spot in Granada. Yeah, it’s not authentic Italian or New York pizza, but hey, we’re in Nicaragua, and it was super yummy and definitely did the job.
Where to stay in Granada Nicaragua for Relaxation & Seclusion: Las Isletas de Granada
One of my favorite spots in Granada, just after the historic center, has to be Las Isletas de Granada! This area is a bit of the upscale side of the city and has such a unique charm. As the name suggests, it’s right on the lake and gives off an Everglades vibe with tons of little islands and water pockets, kind of like a slice of Florida here.
You’ll come across some seriously cool old colonial mansions, the kind that remind you of Pablo Escobar-style opulence. Many of these grand homes are now hotels, like the stunning Hotel El Reith Lake, and they’re some of the coolest hotels in Granada.
Things to do in Las Isletas
Las Isletas is famous for its island life, and there are plenty of activities to enjoy while you’re there.
One of the top things to do in Las Isletas is to take a boat tour. The best way to explore the islands is by hiring a local guide who will share fascinating stories about their history and inhabitants as you navigate through the area.
If you’re looking to be your own captain, kayaking through the islands is a great option. You can see plenty of wild monkeys and birds around the islands.
Best restaurants in Las Isletas
Pico de Garza: Definitely the coolest location to eat in Las Isletas, Pico de Garza is situated right on the water on one of the isletas (small islands). Here, you can get super fresh fish and other local dishes. It’s a great day to hang out in the sun, enjoy a couple of drinks, and have some good lunch.
Where to stay in Granada Nicaragua for the Treehouse Party: Treehouse Hostel
Many of you, especially backpackers, come to Granada for one main reason: the infamous Treehouse Party or Treehouse Rave at the Treehouse Hostel just outside the city. It’s a must-do experience for those looking to let loose, make new friends, and enjoy a wild night in Nicaragua.
The Treehouse Hostel offers dorms and private rooms with stunning views of the surrounding nature. Plus, there’s an on-site bar, pool, and plenty of hammocks to relax in during the day. Be sure to book your stay here well in advance, as it can get quite busy during peak season.
However, if you don’t secure a room in time, most hostels in Granada offer shuttle services to and from the Treehouse.
Treehouse Hostel
The Treehouse Hostel located on Mombacho Volcano offers stunning rooms in the middle of the jungle. You can choose between dorm rooms at the bottom of the hill or private little treehouses high up in the trees. The hostel is situated on 3 acres of lush land with plenty of spots to relax and take in the nature around you.

It ultimately depends on your travel style and preferences. If you’re a backpacker, 3-4 days would be enough to explore the main attractions in Granada. For families or those looking for a more relaxed vacation, 5-7 days would allow for a more leisurely pace and time to visit surrounding areas such as Laguna de Apoyo and Masaya Volcano.
🔒 Is Granada Nicaragua safe?
I’ve been to Granada, and I can tell you it’s generally pretty safe for tourists. Of course, like any other place, it’s smart to stay cautious. Stick to well-lit and bustling areas, watch your stuff, and try not to wander alone at night. Honestly, if you hang out in the historic center or the more touristy spots, you should be just fine.

Granada is packed with cool adventures, and I’ve got some must-dos for you. First up, you’ve got to check out the incredible Masaya Volcano, which is an active volcano and super cool to see! Oh, and if you’re into nightlife, the legendary treehouse party is a must—trust me, it’s unforgettable!

Sure, it’s a bit pricey for Nicaragua, but the food is super tasty. It’s also a fantastic place to get some work done, especially for all the digital nomads out there.

For those seeking more comfort and privacy, there are plenty of affordable guesthouses and hotels like the Hotel Boutique Adela or Hotel Dario Granada.
