Where to Stay in Gyeongju: 3 Best Areas & Hotels for First-Time Visitors

When I was planning my trip to Gyeongju, I definitely overthought where to stay a little. But once I arrived, I quickly realized it’s actually a really easy city to base yourself in. It’s quite small, most of the main sights are close together, and no matter where you stay, you’re never too far from anything.

For me, choosing where to stay in Gyeongju ended up being less about location and more about the kind of experience I wanted. This is one of the best places in Korea to stay in a traditional hanok, and honestly, it ended up being one of my favorite parts of the trip. It just feels completely different from staying in a standard hotel and adds a whole new layer to the experience.

In this guide, I’ll break down the best areas to stay in Gyeongju based on my own trip, along with the hotels I’d personally recommend in each one, so you can pick the spot that fits your travel style the best.

Where to Stay in Gyeongju – My Short Answer & Experience

I spent 2 nights in Gyeongju and decided to stay in a traditional hanok, mainly because I wanted to really lean into the history and culture of the city. Gyeongju feels completely different from Seoul and Busan, and now that I’ve been, I can honestly say this was the best decision I made. It added so much to the experience and made the whole trip feel more immersive.

Gyeongju is pretty small and very history-focused, and since you only need a day or two to explore, staying somewhere traditional just fits the vibe. I also loved that most hanok stays are right near the main attractions, so you’re not sacrificing convenience like you sometimes would in bigger cities.

If a traditional stay isn’t a priority for you though, then staying central is your best bet. I’d personally recommend Noseo-dong, especially for first-time visitors. It’s right in the middle of everything, within walking distance to the main sights, and has the widest range of options whether you’re on a budget, traveling as a couple, or just want something comfortable and easy.

Quick Overview of the Best Areas in Gyeongju

Noseo-dong – This is the most central area to stay in Gyeongju and easily the best option for first-time visitors. You’ll be right near the Daereungwon Tomb Complex and within walking distance of almost all the main sights. It’s super convenient, has the most hotel options, and makes exploring the city really easy.

Nodong-dong – Just next to Noseo-dong, this area is still very central but feels a bit more local and slightly quieter. You’ll still be close to all the main attractions, but with fewer crowds and more low-key restaurants and stays. It’s a great middle ground if you want convenience without being right in the busiest part.

Hwangnam-dong – This is the most charming and traditional area to stay in Gyeongju. It’s where you’ll find a lot of hanok stays, cute cafés, and the popular Hwangnidan-gil. If you want that classic Korean aesthetic and a more unique experience, this is definitely the area to choose.

Gyeongju might be small, but choosing the right area can really shape your experience, especially if it’s your first time visiting. 

These three areas are the ones I’d personally recommend along with the best Gyeongju hotels. Whether you want to stay somewhere central, more local, or fully lean into a traditional hanok stay, this list has it.

1. Noseo-dong // Best Area to Stay for a Central Location

If it’s your first time visiting Gyeongju, this is hands down the easiest place to stay. Noseo-dong sits right next to the Daereungwon Tomb Complex, which is one of the main landmarks in the city, and from here you can walk to almost everything on your itinerary.

I found myself constantly walking through this area while exploring, and it really does feel like the center of it all. You’re close to the main tourist street, tons of restaurants and cafés, and most of the major sights are within a 10–20 minute walk, which makes a huge difference when you’re trying to pack everything into one day.

What I like about Noseo-dong is that it’s just easy. There are plenty of hotel options for every budget, it’s super convenient, and you don’t have to overthink logistics at all. If you want a simple, well-located base where everything is right on your doorstep, this is the best area to stay in Gyeongju.

It’s a perfect base if you want to be steps away from the cafes of Hwangnidan-gil and the royal tombs. The rooms are clean and feature thoughtful touches, making it a great, high-value choice for exploring the city on foot.

$$ GG Tourist Hotel — A practical and reliable choice just a short walk from the main bus terminal. It’s an ideal spot if you’re arriving by bus from Seoul or Busan and want to drop your bags quickly. The rooms are clean and classic, offering a great value stay within easy reach of the city’s historic sites and local food spots.

$ Maison Mini Hotel — A bright, budget-friendly gem in the heart of Gyeongju that offers incredible value. The rooms are simple but clean and full of natural light, making it a popular choice that books out fast. It’s a perfect base within walking distance of the bus terminal and many historic sites.

2. Nodong-dong // Best Area for a More Local Feel

Right next to Noseo-dong, Nodong-dong is a great option if you still want to be central but in a slightly quieter, more local-feeling area. You’re still within easy walking distance of the main sights, but it doesn’t feel quite as busy or tourist-heavy.

This area felt a bit more low-key to me, with more everyday restaurants and fewer crowds compared to the main streets. You can step outside your hotel and feel like you’re in a more lived-in part of the city rather than right in the middle of the tourist buzz, which I can definitely appreciate.

If you like the idea of being close to everything but having a slightly calmer base to come back to, Nodong-dong is a really solid choice. It gives you the best of both worlds without sacrificing convenience.

$$ Hotel Palace — A comfortable and well-located stay that includes a great breakfast to start your day. The rooms are clean and spacious, offering a solid mid-range experience just a short walk from the city’s major historic parks. It’s an easy, reliable pick if you want a convenient home base with all the essentials covered.

$ Bonghwang Mansion — This is easily my favorite budget-friendly stay in the city, especially if you’re traveling solo. It has a fantastic common area that makes it so easy to meet people, and the rooms are bright, clean, and just a short walk from the historic tombs and the best cafes on Hwangnidan-gil.

3. Hwangnam-dong // Best Area for a Traditional Stay

If you want your time in Gyeongju to feel a little more special, this is the area I’d recommend. Hwangnam-dong is easily the most charming part of the city, filled with traditional hanok houses, cute cafés, and small streets that just make you want to slow down and wander.

This is actually where I stayed, and it completely made the experience for me. Staying in a hanok here just felt right. You’re surrounded by history all day while exploring, and then you come back to a traditional home at night. It’s something you just don’t really get in bigger cities like Seoul, and it honestly elevated the entire trip.

You’re also right near Hwangnidan-gil, so there’s plenty happening nearby with restaurants, cafés, and shops, but it still feels peaceful once you step off the main road. Most of the major sights are still within walking distance too, so you’re not giving up convenience.

If you’re even slightly considering a traditional stay, I’d go for it here. It’s one of the most unique experiences you can have in Korea, and Gyeongju is the perfect place to do it.

$$$ Hanok Inn —  If budget wasn’t an issue, this is exactly where I’d be staying to get that authentic, high-end hanok experience. It’s a stunning traditional guest house that perfectly blends old-world Korean charm with modern luxury, all situated right in the heart of the historic district.

$$$ 경주 황리단길 한옥스테이 다가감 — This place is absolutely gorgeous and my top choice for a luxury romantic getaway. The traditional architecture is stunning, but the real highlight for me is the deep bath; it’s the perfect spot to soak and unwind after a day of exploring. It feels incredibly private and high-end, making it a dream stay if you’re looking to treat yourself to something special in Gyeongju.

$$ Hyuhyudang // Where I Stayed!! — This is where I stayed, and I would highly recommend it if you want a simplistic and lovely experience. The traditional heated floors (ondol) made the space feel so cozy, and the minimalist design was incredibly peaceful. It’s a beautiful, authentic stay that really captures the quiet charm of Gyeongju.

The location is amazing, putting you right in the middle of everything, and it’s easily one of the most budget-friendly ways to experience a classic Korean stay. Where to stay in Gyeongju for first time?

If it’s your first visit, I’d recommend staying in Noseo-dong. It’s the most central area, right near the Daereungwon Tomb Complex, and within walking distance of most major sights. It makes getting around super easy and is the most convenient base overall.

Where to stay in Gyeongju for a hanok experience?

For a traditional stay, Hwangnam-dong is the best area. This is where you’ll find the majority of hanok accommodations, along with cute cafés and easy access to Hwangnidan-gil. It’s easily the most charming place to stay in the city. I stayed in this traditional hanok and it was amazing! 10/10 experience!

What to do in Gyeongju?

Some of the top things to do include exploring the Daereungwon Tomb Complex, visiting Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond, walking across Woljeonggyo Bridge, and seeing Cheomseongdae. How many days do I need in Gyeongju?

Most people only need one full day to see the main highlights. If you want to explore at a slower pace or visit temples outside the city like Bulguksa Temple, then staying two nights is a great option.

Can you get around Gyeongju without a car?

Yes, and it’s actually really easy. Gyeongju is very walkable, and most of the main attractions are close together. You can easily explore on foot, rent a bike, or take a short taxi if needed, but you definitely don’t need a car.

Final Thoughts on Where to Stay in Gyeongju

Out of my full 10 days in South Korea, my stay in Gyeongju was easily my favorite. There was just something about staying in a traditional hanok that made the whole experience feel more connected to the place, especially in a city that’s so rooted in history.

That said, you really can’t go wrong here. Gyeongju is small, easy to get around, and most areas are well located for exploring. If you want the easiest trip possible, stay central in Noseo-dong. But if you want something a little more memorable, I’d 100% recommend going for a hanok stay in Hwangnam-dong.
