Isla Holbox, or Holbox Island, is definitely one of my favorite little slices of paradise! This little island is gaining popularity fast, with luxury hotels popping up everywhere, so now’s the perfect time to visit. It used to be a secret insider tip, but even though those days are over, I’m a bigger fan than ever. The island is super chill and relaxed, with beautiful boutique hotels lining the beach, stunning beaches, crystal-clear water, and fantastic vibes.
I like to think of it as Isla Mujeres’ little sister because it’s a great alternative to the more popular spots in the Yucatan like Isla Mujeres, Tulum, or Playa del Carmen.

Just outside of Holbox town, Casa Astral Luxury Hotel is Holbox’s newest beachfront hotel. It’s one of my favorite Holbox hotels with its rooftop pool and private beach area. It’s perfect for couples and those seeking a romantic getaway. The rooms are beautifully designed, spacious, and have all the amenities you need.
($) Tierra Del Mar Hotel – Adults Only
The best budget hotel on the island is, without a doubt, Tierra del Mar Hotel. It is incredibly aesthetic with its beautiful, typical Mexican island design. It is centrally located and has an outdoor swimming pool that easily steals the show from other budget hotels.

Where to Stay in Isla Holbox – Best Holbox Areas
Holbox Island is tiny, and when I say tiny, I really mean it! It might look bigger on a map, but in reality, most of it is covered in jungle and mangrove forest, making only a small part accessible. This means the island is super walkable, which is perfect for exploring! The only vehicles you’ll see cruising around are the cute little golf carts that everyone rents. Choosing where to stay can really shape your experience depending on what you’re looking for, so keep that in mind.
If you visit Holbox Island for the first time, I recommend staying around the Holbox City Centre. Here you’ll find fantastic restaurants and some of the best hotels in Holbox.
Beach lovers should stay right at Playa Holbox and pick one of the stunning beachfront hotels.
Away from all the hustle and bustle is Punta Cocos. Here you’ll find some relaxing resorts and hotels right on the beach.
If you’re looking for cheap hotels or hostels, then I recommend staying close to the Holbox Ferry. Here you’ll find loads of affordable street food and some of the best backpackers and party hostels.
Where to Stay in Isla Holbox for the First Time: Holbox City Centre
The city center of Holbox is where most of the action happens. It’s the busiest part and is located on the north side of the island. As soon as you arrive by ferry, you’ll be greeted by cute little shops, restaurants, and bars.
The best way to explore this area is on foot or by renting a bike or golf cart. From here, you can easily access all other parts of the island. It’s also a great place to stay if you want to experience the local culture and have easy access to amenities.
Things to do in Holbox City Centre:
- You’ve got to try some of my favorite spots to eat! Start your day with a delicious vegan breakfast at Painapol. For lunch or dinner, head to Roots for the absolute best pizza on the island. And don’t miss Barba Negra, a charming little bohemian food court where the cauliflower tacos are just so yummy.
- Take a leisurely stroll around the city center and soak up the stunning street art created by both local and international artists. You can book a tour online or just join one of the free tours offered by places like Tribu Hostel. It’s such a fun way to see all the best murals on the island!
- For a night out you won’t forget, dive into Holbox’s nightlife! Kick off your evening at Hot Corner, a lively pub near the main plaza. They start with salsa and then switch to reggaeton, with people dancing barefoot in the street—pure island vibes!

Where to Stay in Isla Holbox for the Best Beach: Playa Holbox
Playa Holbox is the island’s main beach, located on the northern coast, and it’s one of the most stunning and pristine beaches in the entire Yucatan Peninsula. here youll get a wide stretch of white sand, swaying palm trees, and crystal-clear, wave-free water. This is the ultimate spot to sip on coconuts and cocktails while soaking up paradise.
You’ll find most of the high-end luxury hotels lining this beautiful beach—and for good reason! It’s truly the best place to be. These hotels often come with a private pool, a beachfront bar, a hot tub and all sorts of top-notch amenities. So, if you’re planning a luxury beach trip or romantic break, this is where you want to stay for the full-on Holbox experience!

All the way down to the west side of the island, you’ll find Punta Cocos. This is the place to be for ultimate relaxation and tranquility. Punta Cocos is home to some of the most beautiful, secluded beaches on the island, where you can truly disconnect from the outside world and unwind in peaceful paradise. The area here is not as developed as the city center, so you’ll find fewer bars and restaurants. I recommend renting a golf cart right after you arrive on the island and keeping it for your entire stay. It makes getting around a lot easier.

Where to Stay in Isla Holbox on a Budget: Holbox Ferry
The Holbox Ferry area is located on the south side of the island. This is where most of the locals live, and it’s a great place to stay if you’re on a budget. You’ll find many affordable accommodations here, including hostels and guesthouses.
The area doesn’t have a lot to offer, as most of the action is happening in the city center and on the north side of the island, where Holbox Beach is. However, this also has its perks. Everything here is usually a little cheaper. You’ll find lots of little cheap eats, cafes, street food, and laundry shops where you’ll pay less than in the busy areas.
Things to do near Holbox Ferry:
- Visit the colorful mural at the Holbox Ferry terminal, showcasing the island’s flora and fauna.
- Take a stroll along the waterfront promenade and watch the sunset over the lagoon.
- Rent a bike or golf cart to explore the area and its surrounding neighborhoods.
Best Hotels to Stay Near Holbox Ferry
Hotel Boutique Naj Casa Holbox
If you’re looking for something a little more affordable, then check out the Hotel Boutique Naj Casa Holbox. This property is located just a short walk from the ferry and offers comfortable and modern rooms at a budget-friendly price. The hotel also has a rooftop terrace where you can enjoy stunning views of the island. Holbox is not the most family-friendly destination, but if you’re looking for a family hotel, then this is the one.

Getting to Holbox Island is pretty straightforward, to be honest, because nowadays ADO buses run from Cancun or Playa del Carmen straight to Isla Holbox. And when I say straight to Isla Holbox, I mean to Chiquila, from where you’ll have to catch a quick ferry to get to Holbox Island.

If you’re craving a bit more flexibility and comfort, though, renting a golf cart is your go-to option since buses and cars aren’t allowed on the island. It’s such an amazing place to explore, and the freedom of walking everywhere adds to the adventure.

The first time I visited Isla Holbox was ages ago, and wow, I’ve seen so many different versions of this place! Back then, it was a super remote island with just a handful of hotels and charming boutique spots. It was so peaceful and quiet—it felt incredibly special to me at the time.
These days, Holbox is definitely more popular and accessible for everyone. Fancy hotels are popping up everywhere, prices have gone up, and although it doesn’t quite have that untouched tropical dream island life vibe anymore, it’s still amazing! The hotels here are some of the best in Mexico. If you’re not into the hustle and bustle or party scene of Tulum, I think Isla Holbox makes for the perfect romantic getaway and beach escape.
