Where to Stay in Playa del Carmen Mexico: My First Timers Guide 2026
Playa del Carmen is actually a pretty big city, not as massive as Cancun, but definitely much larger than Tulum. And because of that, where you stay in Playa del Carmen really does make a difference.
There are a few things worth considering: do you want to stay in a resort or an apartment? Do you want to be right by 5th Avenue (the main strip), or somewhere a bit quieter and more local? Each area has a completely different vibe, so it’s worth thinking about what kind of trip you want before booking.
I’ve been to Playa del Carmen quite a few times now and have done it in different ways. I’ve done the full-on resort experience, and also solo trips where I stayed more central. So I’ve learned a thing or two about which areas make sense for which type of traveler.
To make things easier, I’ve put together this guide with my favorite neighborhoods in Playa del Carmen and some of the best hotels and resorts in each. Hopefully it helps you figure out which part of Playa del Carmen fits your style (and your budget). Let’s dive in.

Where to Stay in Playa del Carmen – My Experience
As I’ve mentioned, I’ve been to Playa del Carmen quite a few times over the years and I keep coming back for many good reasons.
Playa has so many perks that make it, at least in my opinion, one of the best places in Mexico for a beach vacation. The food and restaurant scene is incredible, the nightlife is super fun, the beaches are beautiful and free, and its location is fairly central so I can go on day trips to cenotes, Mayan ruins, or nearby towns.
On my more recent trips, I’ve done a bit of everything. I’ve been here solo and stayed right in the city center near 5th Avenue, which was perfect for meeting new people, going out at night, and enjoying the local vibe.
But I’ve also been here on a family vacation, staying at a resort on the outskirts of town. It was peaceful and relaxing, but still close enough that we could easily pop into town for dinner, shopping, or drinks and honestly, that kinda gave us the best of both worlds.
Sometimes when I stay at resorts elsewhere along the Riviera Maya, I end up feeling a bit cut off from everything, like I’m stuck in the middle of nowhere. But the resorts in Playa del Carmen really strike a good balance when it comes to location. You get the quiet and comfort of a resort stay, but you’re still close enough to enjoy all the fun and energy of town whenever you want.

The Best Areas to Stay in Playa del Carmen Mexico
5th Avenue Playa del Carmen
5th Avenue (or Quinta Avenida) is the main strip and heartbeat of Playa del Carmen. This is where everything happens, from boutique shops, souvenir stalls, lively bars, beach clubs, to local restaurants, and even a few nightclubs and malls. It’s busy from morning until late at night, buzzing with a fun mix of locals and tourists.
I stayed here on my very first visit to Playa del Carmen, and I absolutely loved the energy. Yes, it’s noisy and crowded, but that’s part of why it was so much fun, you’re right in the middle of everything. I probably wouldn’t stay here for a full week, but for a few nights or a weekend, it’s an unbeatable spot if you like to be close to the action.
Hotels & Resorts Around Playa del Carmen
This isn’t a single area per se, it refers to the stretch of coastline outside the main city, where most of Playa del Carmen’s larger beachfront resorts are located. These resorts are quieter, more spacious, and perfect if you want a relaxing escape while still being close enough to pop into town.
I stayed at one of these resorts on a previous trip and loved how it offered the best of both worlds. We had our own peaceful beach and pool, but the resort shuttle made it easy to head into downtown Playa del Carmen for dinner, drinks, or shopping whenever we felt like it.
(Tip: If you’re visiting for a mix of beach time and nightlife, choose a resort within 10–15 minutes of downtown.)
Zazil-Ha (Coolest Neighborhood)
Zazil-Ha is hands down my favorite area in Playa del Carmen. It’s right at the far end of 5th Avenue, so it’s still central, but with a much cooler, more local vibe. If Playa del Carmen had a Brooklyn, this would be it.
It’s greener, calmer, and has a great mix of coffee shops, independent boutiques, and trendy little restaurants. Plus, it’s right by the beach, which is always a huge plus in my book.
If I were ever to stay longer or even live in Playa del Carmen, this is absolutely the neighborhood I’d choose. It has a really cool mix of local charm and easy beach access without the nonstop buzz of the main strip.
Downtown Playa del Carmen
The downtown area of Playa del Carmen sits just behind the main strip and feels much more local and residential.
I haven’t stayed here myself, but it’s definitely the most budget-friendly part of the city. You’ll find plenty of affordable apartments to rent, which makes it a great option if you’re planning a longer stay or just don’t want to spend too much on accommodation. It’s a bit farther from the beach, but you’ll still be close enough to walk or grab a short taxi ride when you want some sun.

1. Playa del Carmen Hotels Near 5th Avenue
Hotel Casa Colibri // Best Hotel in Playa del Carmen City Center
Hotel Casa Colibri is right in the heart of Playa del Carmen’s centro, sitting directly on the beach with its own private beach access and honestly, I can’t believe I hadn’t heard of it sooner.
Even though I’ve been to Playa del Carmen quite a few times now, it only came onto my radar after some close friends stayed there, showed me their photos, and absolutely raved about it. Now it’s officially on my list for my next visit.
Remember how I mentioned that I love having that resort-style vibe but still being in a central, lively area? Well, this place seems to tick all those boxes. It’s right in the middle of town but somehow manages to feel calm and secluded.
The design looks beautiful with lush gardens, peaceful courtyards, and rooms that feel authentically Mexican rather than overly polished. Plus, it has its own beach club and restaurant, which literally gives off “hidden island retreat” energy while still being steps from 5th Avenue.
I haven’t stayed here yet, but based on my friends’ experience and everything I’ve seen, it looks like exactly the kind of place I’d fall in love with, relaxed, stylish, and perfectly balanced between city buzz and beachfront peace.
In case any of you have stayed here before I’m all ears to hear your experiences about this hotel too!

Aloft Playa del Carmen
My favorite place to stay in Playa del Carmen, where I’ve actually stayed twice already, is Aloft Playa del Carmen. I stayed here years ago, and then again more recently when I spent just two nights in town, and honestly, it was perfect for a short stay.
The location is unbeatable: right by 5th Avenue, surrounded by some of my favorite restaurants and bars, and just a short walk to the beach. During my second visit, Playa del Carmen unfortunately had quite a bit of seaweed on the shore, but Aloft’s rooftop pool and terrace totally made up for it. We grabbed a few drinks and spent the afternoon swimming with incredible ocean views which wasn’t a bad trade-off at all.
The rooms were spacious, the beds were super comfortable, and while the rooftop pool is definitely the highlight for me, the hotel also has a surprisingly good gym, way better than many resort gyms I’ve seen. If you’re looking for something modern, central, and easy, Aloft Playa del Carmen is a fantastic choice.

Fabiola Condo Hotel
Another place that really caught my eye during my research was Fabiola Condo Hotel, which has a totally different vibe from Aloft Playa del Carmen. When I first looked into it, I couldn’t decide if I wanted something that felt more authentically Mexican with character or something sleek and modern.
I ended up choosing Aloft at the time, but next time I’m in Playa, I might go for something with a bit more charm, and that’s exactly what Fabiola offers.
Fabiola has these super cute little apartments that feel warm and authentic, with colorful touches and a lovely pool area that gives real Mexican vacation energy. I actually think that’s sometimes nicer than a brand-new, ultra-modern condo, especially when I’m traveling in Mexico and want a place with soul.
Depending on the type of trip I’m on, I often love having a small apartment or studio setup because it’s so practical. I’ve got a fridge for cold drinks, a little kitchen for snacks or protein shakes, and just that bit of extra comfort that makes longer stays easier.

2. Resorts & Hotels in Playa del Carmen
La Casa de la Playa // Best 5 Star Resort in Playa del Carmen
La Casa de la Playa is one of the most stunning 5-star resorts in Playa del Carmen, and honestly, I still think this is one of the best places in Mexico to enjoy a resort stay. You get the full luxury experience and you’re still close enough to town for great restaurants, bars, and shopping.
What I love about La Casa de la Playa is that it doesn’t feel like one of those massive concrete towers that could be anywhere in the world. You know the type, fancy but kind of soulless. This one actually feels like Mexico and whenever I stay at a resort I really enjoy when the design of the resort reflects the country a little if that makes sense.
The design is earthy, warm, and blends beautifully with the natural surroundings, so it feels more like a hideaway than a hotel. If you’re after an upscale, design-forward, and authentic experience, this is absolutely worth checking out.

Banyan Tree Mayakoba // One of the Best All Inclusive Resorts in Playa del Carmen
Another incredible option is Banyan Tree Mayakoba, which is a world-famous luxury resort just outside Playa del Carmen. What I love about it (besides how drop-dead gorgeous it is) is that it feels intimate despite being a full 5-star resort. It’s designed with privacy and nature in mind with lush greenery, private pools, and villas that feel like your own little oasis.
I haven’t stayed here myself (yet), but it’s been on my list for ages. After doing quite a bit of research, I can confidently say it’s one of the most beautiful resorts in the Riviera Maya. It’s definitely on the pricier side, but from what I’ve seen, totally worth the splurge. I’ll leave a link down below if you want to check it out yourself.

3. Hotels in Playa del Carmen Zazil-Ha
Mahekal Beach Front Resort // One of the Best Playa del Carmen Resorts in Centro
Mahekal Beach Front Resort gives off a very similar vibe to Casa Colibri which I have mentioned above. It’s right in the heart of Playa del Carmen, directly on the beach, yet somehow still feels peaceful and tucked away.
I absolutely love that combination. You’re close to everything, but once you’re on the property, it feels like a calm little beach escape rather than being in the middle of town.
The hotel itself is beautiful, the beach area is stunning, and the restaurant on-site, Fuego, is one of my favorites in Playa. They serve incredible seafood and I’ve had the grilled octopus here a few times, and it’s honestly a bit of a hidden gem. If you’re looking for that perfect mix of convenience, tranquility, and beachfront luxury, Mahekal is an amazing pick.

Casa Yako // My Favorite Apartment in Playa del Carmen
A few years back, when I first started working remotely, I stayed in Playa del Carmen for two full weeks and that’s when I found Casa Yako, the cutest little apartment I’ve ever stayed in here. I wanted something that felt local, affordable, and livable, and this place ticked all the boxes.
I had my own small kitchen, a cozy one-bedroom setup, and even a rooftop terrace with a hammock and BBQ area, perfect for working, relaxing, and watching sunsets.
It was beautifully decorated and super budget-friendly, which is why I’m still recommending it now. If you’re planning a longer stay or prefer having your own space with a kitchen, Casa Yako is absolutely ideal. I’ll definitely be staying here again next time I’m in Playa for a while.

4. Downtown Playa del Carmen Hotels
Antera Hotel Playa del Carmen
Antera Hotel is another beautiful aparthotel right in the city center of Playa del Carmen. They offer everything from standard hotel rooms to fully equipped apartments. I personally think their one-bedroom apartments are a great deal, you get a full kitchen, living room, and balcony, which makes it feel more like a home than a hotel.
Since I often work a little while I travel, I love having my own kitchen to make coffee in the morning and snacks throughout the day. Having that extra space just makes everything more comfortable and practical, especially for longer stays.

Hotel Casaejido // Best Place to Stay in Playa del Carmen on a Budget
My favorite budget-friendly stay in Playa del Carmen has to be Hotel Casaejido. It’s about 15–20 minutes from the beach and the busy areas, but the vibe is super local and authentic. The property itself is really cute, think colorful Mexican touches, a small pool, and lots of charm, all at a very affordable price.
It’s definitely not the most luxurious option, but if you’re traveling on a budget or backpacking through Mexico, it’s a fantastic alternative that still feels comfortable and welcoming.

In my opinion, the best luxury resort in Playa del Carmen is Etéreo, an ultra-exclusive 5-star property located just outside the city. It’s right on the beach and offers a beautifully serene atmosphere, definitely one for my bucket list.
What is the best 5-star resort in Playa del Carmen?
Etéreo, Auberge Collection easily tops that list. It’s one of the most luxurious 5-star hotels not just in Playa del Carmen, but in the entire Yucatán. It comes with a hefty price tag, but honestly, it’s worth every penny.
How to get to Playa del Carmen, Mexico?
You can either book a private shuttle or transfer from Cancún International Airport (which is the easiest option), or take the ADO bus if you want a more budget-friendly route. I usually go with the bus when I’m traveling solo since it’s safe, cheap, and super comfortable.
Final Thoughts on Staying in Playa del Carmen
All in all, I think Playa del Carmen is one of the best cities in Mexico to stay. It gives you the best of both worlds, resort comfort and authentic city energy. I love relaxing at the pool or beach, but I also want to go out for tacos, browse local shops, and explore a bit, and Playa makes that so easy.
In comparison, some of the hotel zones in Tulum or Cancún can make me feel a little too disconnected from the real mexico. Playa del Carmen has a really good balance between relaxation and fun.
