Porto was one of my first solo trips ever, and let me tell you—I learned the hard way how much your location can impact your experience. The city may be small, but that doesn’t mean your neighborhood choice doesn’t matter. Sure, you can walk or hop on a tram, but isn’t it way easier when you step outside and you’re already exactly where you want to be?

Whether you’re after a social hostel to meet fellow travelers or a tucked-away spot to dodge the tourist crowds (like I was), this guide breaks down where to stay in Porto—plus the top hotels in each area.

Best Areas to Stay in Porto

I’ve broken this guide down into five areas that are worth staying in, from the classic Ribeira right on the river to the artsy Cedofeita.

Each neighborhood has its own vibe, and where you stay can completely shape your trip and how you explore Porto. This guide will help you choose the best spot for your travel style—plus some awesome hotel options to match.

Ribeira – Where To Stay in Porto For First Timers & Scenic Views

If I were visiting Porto again for the first time (and had the budget), this is definitely where I’d stay. Ribeira is right on the Douro River, with colorful buildings, lively restaurants, and some of the best views over the city. It’s the Porto you see on postcards, and honestly, it feels just as magical in real life.

Yes, it’s super touristy—but if you’re only here for a day or two, does that really matter? You’ll probably be hitting all the major attractions anyway, and staying in Ribeira puts you right in the middle of it all. Plus, waking up with a river view? Kinda hard to beat.

Best Hotels in Ribeira:

$$$$ Gran Cruz House

If you’re looking to splurge, this is the spot. Set in a historic building with some of the best views of the Douro River and Dom Luís I Bridge, it’s pure luxury. The rooms have this coastal-chic vibe with deep blues and warm oranges, making it feel both upscale and inviting.

Plus, they welcome you with a complimentary bottle of port—very on brand for Porto. I haven’t stayed here yet (because, well, budget), but if I were going all out, then this would definitely be my choice for a luxury hotel in Porto.

$$ Porto River Infante

If I were staying in Ribeira, this is 100% where I’d book. It’s right in the middle of everything—just steps from the river, surrounded by all the best sights, and perfect for rolling out of bed and straight into the heart of Porto. The rooms feel boutique and stylish but still super cozy, and the staff here are next level when it comes to making sure you have a great stay.

If you want a scenic, central stay without feeling like you’re stuck in a tourist trap, this is the spot.

If waking up to insane river views is a priority, this is the place to book. These apartments put you right in Ribeira, so you can sip your morning coffee while looking out over the Douro—honestly, not a bad way to start the day. The space itself is modern, bright, and fully equipped for a comfy stay, whether you’re here for a weekend or longer.

Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t a “budget-friendly” stay, but for just under $150 a night, it’s hands down the best value for money in Ribeira.

Things to Do in Ribeira

• Stroll along the riverfront – I loved grabbing a drink and just watching the city buzz with life, from street performers to locals out for a walk.
• Cross the Luís I Bridge – I walked this bridge so many times, but the upper-level views, especially at sunset, made it worth it every single time.
• Hop on a Douro River cruise – I wasn’t sure if this would be too touristy, but seeing Porto from the water turned out to be one of the best parts of my trip.
• Check out Palácio da Bolsa – I don’t usually love guided tours, but this palace’s over-the-top chandeliers, gold detailing, and Moroccan-style room made it unforgettable.
• Get lost in the backstreets – Some of the best spots in Ribeira aren’t on the riverfront but hidden in its winding alleyways, where I found tiny bars, local restaurants, and incredible street art.

Baixa – Best for Sightseeing & City Center Location

Baixa has a more contemporary vibe than Ribeira, and while it’s lost a little of its old-school charm, its still a UNESCO world heritage site. Staying here means you can walk pretty much everywhere—Clérigos Tower, São Bento Train Station, Livraria Lello, Porto Cathedral you name it. And if where you want to go isn’t within walking distance, you’ll find easy access to public transportation here.

Personally, I think this is the best neighborhood to stay in Porto for tourists as there are tons of accommodation options here, from budget-friendly hostels to high-end hotels, making it a great location for first-timers or backpackers looking for an affordable stay.

However, keep in mind the area also has some great nightlife in Porto, so it can get loud, especially on weekends. But if you want to be right in the middle of the action, it’s worth it.

Best Hotels in Baixa:

$$$ Pousada do Porto – Rua das Flores

This hotel has a solid mix of historic charm and modern comfort, right in the heart of the city. The building itself has that classic Porto elegance, but the rooms are sleek and updated. Plus, there’s a pool and a spa which isn’t something you find at every hotel in this area. If you want to stay somewhere that has a central location with a little extra luxury, this is a great pick.

$$ Rio da Vila

Rio da Vila is the kind of beautiful boutique hotel that nails both comfort and vibe. The breakfast here is so good—fresh pastries, great coffee, and just the perfect way to start the day. And in the afternoon, the bar is the ideal spot to wind down. I loved grabbing a drink and just soaking in the atmosphere with the warm lighting and cool aesthetic that made the whole place feel extra cozy.

$ Best Guest Porto Hostel

If you’re looking for a hostel with the most central location then Best Guest Porto is a great option. It’s right in the heart of Baixa, so you can walk everywhere, and the dorms are clean, comfy, and not crammed with 20 beds. They also have private rooms. The social vibe is great without being a non-stop party, which is perfect if you want to meet people but still get some sleep.

Things to Do in Baixa

Climb Clérigos Tower – I won’t lie, those 200+ steps had me questioning my life choices, but the 360° city views at the top made it so worth it.

Visit Livraria Lello – This stunning bookstore is where J.K. Rowling got inspiration for Harry Potter, and walking inside feels like stepping into Hogwarts. Get there early, though—the line gets wild as it’s one of the main tourist attractions in Porto.

Check out São Bento Station – I don’t usually spend time admiring train stations, but the massive blue-and-white tile murals inside this one are absolutely unreal.

Go bar-hopping on Galeria de Paris Street – I joined a bar crawl at my hostel and OMG Porto knows how to party. It can get a little wild, but if you’re gonna drink this is the place to do it.

Stroll down Rua Santa Catarina – Porto’s main shopping street is lined with everything from local boutiques to big-name brands. It’s also home to Majestic Café, one of the most famous coffee spots in the city. Even if you’re not here to shop, it’s a great place to wander.

Eat a francesinha – I knew I had to try this ridiculous, over-the-top sandwich when I visited Porto. It’s loaded with meat, smothered in beer sauce, and topped with an egg. Not the healthiest choice, but definitely a must-try.

Cedofeita – Best for a Local Vibe & Artsy Scene

After visiting Porto a few times, Cedofeita is now where I stay when I’m in the city. I no longer need to check off the tourist spots, so I can actually vibe like a local when I visit. This is Porto’s artsy neighborhood, full of indie galleries, concept stores, and trendy cafés where you can actually find a seat without battling a crowd.

It’s got a much more local feel, and while it’s not right in the middle of the action, it’s still close enough that you can walk to most places without much effort.

That said, Cedofeita is changing. As more travelers discover it, it’s getting trendier, and with that, some of its scruffy, old charms are disappearing. But if you want a quieter stay in Porto with a mix of traditional and modern, this is my go to option!

$$$ Baumhaus Serviced Living – Art & Design Apartments

If you’re into stylish, design-forward stays that still feel cozy and homey, this one’s a winner. Baumhaus Serviced Living blends artsy vibes with comfort, making it a great option if you want something that feels more like your own space rather than a standard hotel. It’s in a quieter part of Porto but still well-connected, and the garden area is perfect for slow mornings with coffee.

$$ Porto Deluxe Apartments// Our favorite stay in Porto

Porto Deluxe Apartments was everything. I’m usually not big on traditional hotels, so this apartment-style stay was perfect for Oliver and me on our weekend getaway. It felt like our own little escape, with stunning city views, a super comfy bed, and a jacuzzi and private outdoor space. Dreamy, right?

The location was solid, with easy access to shops, restaurants, and attractions. Plus, the hosts were amazing and even set up an airport transfer for us. Honestly, for the price, it was a steal, and we both agreed we could happily live here in Portugal.

If you’re looking for where to stay in Porto with family, their three-bedroom apartments make the perfect family rooms, giving you plenty of space while still feeling like a luxe getaway.

$ Casa da Musica

Casa da Música is easily one of the most budget-friendly stays in Porto, especially if you don’t mind being a little outside the main tourist areas. It’s simple, clean, and gets the job done without draining your wallet. If you prefer a more local feel, this is a great option as it’s located in the heart of Cedofeita and just a minute walk from cafes and the music house .

Things to Do in Cedofeita

• Wander Rua de Miguel Bombarda – This street is full of contemporary art galleries and indie shops, and it’s the best place to see Porto’s creative side.
• Grab coffee at a concept café – The neighborhood has some of the best coffee spots, from minimalist cafés to cozy bookshop hybrids. I really enjoyed the brunch at Zenith.
• Visit the Jardins do Palácio de Cristal – One of my favorite green spaces in Porto, with peacocks wandering around and some seriously underrated river views.
• Check out Mercado Bom Sucesso – A modern food market where you can grab everything from fresh pastries to international dishes (perfect for when you can’t decide what to eat).
• See live music at Maus Hábitos – This artsy venue is hidden within Porto and has everything from live concerts to DJ nights.
• Visit the Saturday market at Centro Comercial Bombarda – If you’re here on a Saturday, this weekly market is full of local artists, vintage finds, and handmade goods.

Bonfim – Best for Budget Travelers & Local Life

I’ve never actually stayed in Bonfim, but after walking around and seeing the vibe, I can definitely recommend it. It’s got that mix of student energy and local life that makes a neighborhood feel lived-in and authentic. It’s not as central as Baixa or as scenic as Ribeira, but it makes up for it with lower prices, great food, and a cool, offbeat atmosphere.

This is where a lot of artists and students live, so you’ll find laid-back cafés, vintage stores, and some of the best cheap eats in Porto. Staying in Bonfim also means your budget stretches way further—accommodation here is noticeably cheaper, and you’re still close enough to walk or hop on the metro to get anywhere you need. If you’re the kind of traveler who likes staying where the locals are, this is the spot.

$$$ Acta The Avenue

A sleek and modern stay that balances style with comfort, this hotel is a great choice if you want something a little more polished without blowing your budget. The rooms are clean and contemporary, the service is solid, and there’s even a rooftop terrace for when you want to unwind with a view. Plus, it’s well-connected to public transport, making it easy to explore the city.

$$ Outsite Porto Mouco// Perfect for Digital Nomads

If you’re a remote worker like us, you definitely gotta check this place out. It’s got everything you need to stay productive while still enjoying Porto—outdoor swimming pool for mid-day dips, a yoga room to stretch out after hours at your laptop, and a co-living setup that makes it easy to meet other digital nomads. Plus, they host weekly events, so you’ll always have an excuse to take a break and connect with like-minded travelers.

We’ve all been there, trying to find the cheapest place to stay without ending up somewhere that feels like a mistake. This spot hits that sweet spot. It’s budget-friendly but still clean, comfy, and in a solid location. No weird smells, no questionable sheets, just a simple, reliable place to crash after a day of exploring Porto. It’s also super close to the metro making it really easy to get around.

Things to Do in Bonfim

• Explore the Street Art – Walking through Bonfim, I kept spotting colorful murals tucked between old buildings. It’s not as packed with street art as other parts of Porto, but when you find one, it’s worth stopping to admire.
• Visit the Church of the Lord of Bonfim – This church is a big deal in the neighborhood, and even though it’s not as famous as some of Porto’s other churches, it’s got a quiet charm that makes it worth a quick stop.
• Relax at Jardim Marques de Oliveira – This little park is right at the start of Bonfim if you’re walking over from the city center. It’s a solid place to take a break, especially if you’ve been wandering all day.
• Sip Coffee at Combi Coffee Roasters – I loved this spot. Combi serves some of the best coffee in area.
• Eat Like a Local at a Snack Bar – Bonfim has some great no-frills snack bars where you can grab a meal for just a few euros. Perfect if you want to eat well without spending too much.

Vila Nova de Gaia – Best for Wine Lovers & Riverside Stays

The first time I came to Porto, I stayed in Gaia. I didn’t do any research and didn’t realize that central Porto was all the way across the river. Oops. But honestly? It ended up being great. I stayed in a really good hostel, met a group of girls, and once I knocked out all the touristy stuff, Gaia was the perfect spot.

The port wine cellars were right there, the river views were unreal, and I didn’t have to pay Ribeira prices to enjoy them. If you don’t mind crossing the bridge a few times, it’s a pretty sweet deal.

$$$$ Vincci Ponte de Ferro

For the best luxury hotel in Porto you HAVE to stay at Vincci Ponte de Ferro. This hotel is out of this world. The rooftop pool overlooks the Douro River and the Dom Luís I Bridge, creating a view that feels straight out of a movie. Even if you just come here for a rooftop drink, it’s worth it.

It has elegant superior rooms, top-tier service, and a design that blends modern sophistication with Porto’s historic charm. Every inch of this hotel feels carefully curated, from the stylish interiors to the panoramic terrace where a glass of Port wine just hits different. I envy those who get to stay here!

$$$ Villa Teresa apartamentos

Located just a couple of streets inland from the river, Villa Teresa Apartments gives you a peaceful retreat while keeping you close to all the action in Vila Nova de Gaia. The views here are stunning—think classic red rooftops stretching out in front of you. With a fully equipped kitchen, you can whip up breakfast and enjoy it on the terrace, soaking in the scenery before heading out to explore.

$$ Porto View by Patio 25

If you want river views and a private room without setting your wallet on fire, this is the spot. Porto View by Patio 25 sits on the Vila Nova de Gaia side, which means you get that postcard-worthy view of Porto without the crowds (or the steep hills). It’s the perfect balance—close enough to walk across the bridge and be in the action, but tucked away just enough for a more laid-back stay. And the view from your balcony is literally insane. Go grab a 2 euro bottle of wine and watch the sunset right from your room!

This place will always be special to me because it’s the first hostel I ever stayed in solo—aka, the stay that started it all. Nestled right on the river, the views alone are unreal, but what really made it memorable was the vibe.

They had tea time with snacks and drinks (yes, free snacks), and it was the perfect setup to meet other travelers. The dorms were spacious, the beds were made to look like wine bottles, and the whole place felt more boutique than budget. If you’re looking for a hostel that’s social but not chaotic, this is the one.

Things to Do in Vila Nova de Gaia

• Go Port Wine Tasting at Taylor’s – I did a tour here, and it was amazing. Even if port wine isn’t your thing, you’re literally in the city where it was created—so you have to at least give it a try. They have their own wine cellar and it’s the perfect afternoon activity.
• Take the Gaia Cable Car – It’s short but scenic, and it saves you from walking up the hill (worth it).
• Watch the Sunset from Jardim do Morro – Easily one of the best views in Porto, and best of all, it’s free. Grab a drink and soak it in.
• Walk Along the Riverfront – Gaia’s side is way more chill than Ribeira, but still has great bars and restaurants right by the water. I found myself dining on this side of the river much more than Porto City Center.
• Check Out the WOW Cultural District – A newer spot with a cluster of museums, wine tastings, and trendy cafes. It’s a little fancy but I really enjoy walking around here and I feel like they always have something new popping up.
• Take a day trip to the Douro Valley – If you have time, get out of the city and explore the rolling vineyards of the Douro Valley. This is where port wine is made, and the landscapes are unreal. You can do a river cruise, visit wineries, and sip some of the best wine in Portugal while soaking up the views.

Staying by the Sea

If you’d rather swap city buzz for ocean views, Praia Foz Luxury Apartments is the move. It’s such good value for money, and the vibe is pure coastal charm—think peaceful, quaint, and just a short bus ride into the city.

At the end of the day, where you stay in Porto comes down to what kind of experience you want. If you’re all about the classic Porto views and don’t mind the crowds, Ribeira is perfect. If you’d rather stay somewhere with a more local, artsy vibe, Cedofeita is the way to go. No matter where you choose, the city is compact and easy to explore.
