I made the mistake of staying way too far out for my first three nights, which meant a lot of my days were spent on public transportation instead of actually exploring.

Where to Stay in Seoul: My Quick Overview
If it’s your first time in Seoul, chances are your itinerary is packed. A lot of the must-see sights are either central or super easy to reach by public transportation. Because of that, I generally recommend staying in Myeongdong or Itaewon. Both areas give you easy access to pretty much anywhere in the city. However, they can be a bit pricier, so booking early is key if you want the best rates.
That being said, staying right in the middle of everything isn’t for everyone. While Myeongdong makes getting around incredibly easy, it can also feel congested, busy, and not exactly the coolest vibe if you’re looking for something more relaxed. If that’s you, don’t worry, there are plenty of other neighborhoods that might suit your travel style better, and I’ll get into those below.
One other thing worth thinking about is whether you want a more cultural experience. If so, staying in a hanok village is such a unique way to make your Seoul trip even more memorable. I’ve included some great options for that too.

Myeongdong & Jung-gu (Central Seoul) – If it’s your first time in Seoul and you want everything easy, this is a solid choice. You’re right in the middle of the city with shopping, street food, the best cafes, and major sights within walking distance. It’s busy, especially in the evenings, but incredibly convenient and great for first-timers.
Hongdae – Young, energetic, and there is more than enough to keep you busy. This area is known for nightlife, indie shops, street performances, and endless food options. We stayed close to Hongdae and it was perfect for wandering around, finding dinner places and it’s one of the cheaper areas to stay.
Insadong & Bukchon – This is where traditional Seoul shines. You’ve got hanok houses, tea shops, galleries, and slower streets that feel worlds away from the modern chaos. It’s very walkable and close to palaces, making it a great pick if you want culture and charm right outside your door.
Itaewon – International, diverse, and is on a popular subway line making exploring Seoul super easy. You’ll find global food, trendy bars, and a mix of old-school and modern Seoul. It’s a good base if you like variety and want to be able to explore the city.
Gangnam – Sleek, modern, and polished. This side of the city feels more corporate and upscale, with wider streets, shopping malls, and high-end hotels. It’s not as close to the historic sights, but public transport makes it easy to get around, and it’s great if you like a more refined stay.
My Experience on the Best Areas to Stay in Seoul and Where I’d Stay Again
Like I mentioned above, for the first three nights in Seoul I stayed a little outside the city in Mangwon-dong, and honestly, I absolutely loved it. I’d highly recommend this area if you’re visiting Seoul for the third or fourth time, or if you’re staying longer than the average tourist. The neighborhood is suuuper chill, filled with great cafes, vintage shops, and cozy wine bars. I was genuinely in heaven.
That said, because we only had six days in the city, it ended up being pretty inconvenient. Getting into the center took about 45 minutes on the metro, and if we wanted to go farther, like Seongsu or Gangnam, it was easily over an hour. It really started to eat into our days, which wasn’t ideal with limited time.
Because of that, I decided to move hotels halfway through the trip and stay in Myeongdong, and it was the best decision. I stayed at Hotel28, and it was honestly perfect. Stepping out of the lobby put us right in the middle of food options, shopping, and the energy of the city. We were about a 15-minute walk from popular markets and nearby neighborhoods, a quick walk to the metro, and it made getting around Seoul so much easier.

Myeongdong is hands-down one of the most popular places to stay in Seoul, and yeah, it definitely gets labeled as touristy. But if you’re short on time, this area makes life so so easy.
I walked out of our hotel and was instantly surrounded by food spots, shopping, street snacks, and multiple subway lines ready to take me pretty much anywhere. Location wise, it seriously doesn’t get better than here.
This area is best known for the Myeondong shopping street, night food market, and how central it is to, well, everything. You’re close to Namsan park, not far from major palaces, and connected to the rest of the city without needing a single complicated transfer. It’s perfect for first timers.

$$$ Hotel28— This is where we stayed for 3 nights in Myeongdong and it was fantastic. It’s a boutique style hotel with super chic rooms and cool decor. We were located right in the center of Myeongdong but it was still quiet and felt a little tucked away. I would highly recommend this stay to anyone who appreciates an upscale stay with easy access to the highlights of the city.
$$ Ibis Ambassador — If you’re after something more low-key with a friendlier price tag, ibis is a solid pick. It’s a well-known brand, so you know exactly what you’re getting. A clean, reliable stay with no surprises. The location is great too. It’s on a quieter street, away from the chaos of the main walking strip, but still close enough that you’re never far from the action. The rooms are simple, comfortable, and more than enough for a great stay in Seoul.

The whole place is bright and airy, the rooms are genuinely comfortable, and the design has a stylish touch that makes it feel more like a home than a generic hotel room. They offer both single and family rooms, so it works whether you’re solo, traveling as a couple, or have the whole family with you.
2. Hongdae // Best Area to Stay in Seoul for Solo Travelers
Hongdae sits around Hongik University Station, just a few subway stops from central Seoul, and it’s perfect if you want things a little louder, later, and more fun. This area is packed with students, creatives, and travelers who like being where things are actually happening. Think pop-up shops, cheap but amazing eats, late-night snacks, and some of the best budget accommodations in the city.
Because Mangwon is super close, we ended up spending a lot of time in Hongdae during our stay, and honestly, it was such a good time. The streets are usually buzzing with market stalls, massive ice cream cones, street food you definitely have to try, and random street performers doing their thing.
While Myeongdong is touristy-busy, Hongdae is local-busy. University kids are everywhere, which gives the area this cool, youthful energy that feels way more natural than curated. There are tons of cafés to ease into the morning, bars and restaurants that go late, and because it’s on a major subway line, you’re really not far from the big sightseeing spots you’ll want to hit anyway.

$$$ Slowon Hongdae – A chill Hongdae pick that is super stylish and new, with clean rooms, city views, free Wi-Fi and a kitchen area that makes mornings way easier. Great location steps from the nightlife and food, and while it’s a little bit pricier than the other options, I think its 100% worth it for the atmosphere and amenities.
$$ Bunk Guesthouse Hongdae – A great choice for younger travelers who want something social but still comfortable, with clean rooms, solid beds, and shared spaces that make meeting people easy. They also run group activities and tours, which is a big plus if you’re traveling solo, plus free ramen and breakfast that make this an especially smart pick for budget travelers in Hongdae.

3. Insadong & Bukchon Hanok Village // Best Area to Stay in Seoul for a Traditional Hanok Stay
Personally, I think this is one of the most special areas to stay in Seoul. You’re close to major palaces, historic streets, and traditional neighborhoods, but what really makes this area stand out is the chance to stay in a hanok, a traditional Korean home. These places are stunning. They keep their classic design but feel beautifully maintained and surprisingly modern inside.
Most people only visit Bukchon during the day, and access is limited from 10am to 5pm since locals still live here. Staying overnight lets you experience the neighborhood without the crowds, which honestly makes a huge difference. It is more expensive since you’re usually renting an entire house, but for the experience alone, I think it’s worth it. You’ll be slightly farther north than central Seoul, so a few spots take longer to reach, but overall it’s still a fantastic base.

4. Itaewon // Best Place to Stay in Seoul for Food, Nightlife & Shopping
Itaewon sits just south of Myeongdong and is one of those neighborhoods that’s easy to love, especially if you want something central without feeling like you’re sleeping in the middle of a tourist funnel. It’s well connected via Line 6, close to the river, and getting around the city from here is refreshingly simple.
This area has a more international feel, with a mix of laid-back bars, independent boutiques, and side streets that are fun to wander without a plan. It’s also home to some of my favorite spots in Seoul, including Barboo, a cozy wine bar that’s perfect for a relaxed night out after a long day of exploring. Shopping here is way cooler than shopping in Myeondong or Hongdae in my opinion. You’ll find vintage stores, small fashion labels, and concept shops scattered throughout Itaewon and nearby Hannam-dong.

5. Gangnam // Best Area to Stay in Seoul for Luxury
Gangnam sits south of the river and feels noticeably different from the older, more historic parts of Seoul. This is where the city leans modern. Gangnam has wide streets, sleek cafés, high-end shopping, and hotels that feel more spacious and refined.
It’s a great area if you want a quieter place to come back to at night, especially after busy sightseeing days. While it’s not where most first-time visitors stay, or where I would recommend, Gangnam is still very well connected by subway and works well as a base if you don’t mind slightly longer travel times to the palaces and traditional neighborhoods. In return, you get better hotels, less crowd chaos, and some of the best shopping in the city, from luxury brands to underground malls like COEX.
Gangnam is especially ideal for longer stays, business travelers, or anyone who wants a more relaxed, upscale side of Seoul without giving up convenience.

Picking where to stay in a new city can feel weirdly stressful. I always overthink whether I’ll actually like the area or if spending a bit more is really worth it. But after visiting Seoul, I realized I was out exploring way more than I was ever in my hotel, so being close to the action mattered most.
