Where to stay in Shkoder – Best Areas
Shkoder is far from a sleepy village – get ready for a busy city filled with life, especially around its stunning city center and the lively Kole Idromeno Street, the hotspot of all things exciting.
For first-timers in Shkoder, the City Center is ideal for easy access to hotels, eateries, and public transportation, keeping you in the heart of the action.
If you’re craving an even busier experience, stay directly on Kole Idromeno, the main pedestrian street for restaurants and bars, to check out the city’s nightlife.
For those looking for peace without sacrificing luxury, the quieter, more upscale hotels in Zdrale, just north of the city center, definitely offer a more relaxed stay.
And if you’re pinching pennies, Parruce offers plenty of budget-friendly accommodation options, all conveniently located near the city center, ensuring you don’t miss out on anything.
1. Where to stay in Shkoder for the first time: City Centre
The city center of Shkoder is the top pick, especially for first-timers. Honestly, it’s just super convenient because everything you need is literally at your doorstep. You’ll find a bunch of different accommodation options like hotels, hostels, and guesthouses (most offer free parking, which is a bonus!), plus loads of restaurants, cafes, and supermarkets.
The city center is where it’s at in Shkoder, prime for checking out the nightlife and exploring the city’s fab food scene and stunning architecture.
Also, if you’re not rolling in with a car, staying in the city center is a breeze. The main bus stop is right by the city’s biggest roundabout (you can’t miss it on Google Maps, right by the Hotel Rozafa). So, if you’re coming in from Tirana by bus, you’ll land within easy walking distance of your hotel.
Things to do in the City Centre
Strolling through the city center is just so much fun, soaking up the incredible atmosphere. Our go-to spot is definitely G’Juhadol Street, right beside Kole Idromeno, the heart of the bar scene. This street is a paradise lined with bars and restaurants. On warm summer evenings, every bar expands outdoors with seating areas, live music is played, and the buzz of people enjoying dinner and beers makes it just a great experience.
For those who are more interested in Shkoder’s cultural side, the Site of Witness and Memory is a must-visit. This museum poignantly chronicles the communist era in Albania, featuring exhibits and artifacts that really show what Albania was like under Enver Hoxha’s dictatorship.
Best restaurants in the City Centre
Arti Zanave: This is definitely our favorite spot for traditional cuisine. The restaurant is conveniently located at the end of Bar Street G’juhadol, making it the perfect place to enjoy dinner before heading out for some drinks.
Pasta e Vino: If you’re craving something different from Albanian cuisine or need a break from the meat-heavy dishes, this Italian restaurant is an excellent choice. They offer delicious pasta and a wide selection of international and local wines.
2. Where to stay in Shkoder for shopping & restaurants: Kole Idromeno Street
Staying on Kole Idromeno Street is essentially like staying in the heart of the city since Kole Idromeno nestles right in the center. It’s Shkoder’s crown jewel, packed with restaurants and shops, and lined with breathtaking architecture.
If you’re feeling like being at the center of everything, Kole Idromeno is your spot. Here, you’re just steps away from the bustling scene of shops, eateries, and bars along G’juhadol Street, all while being surrounded by incredible architecture and rich history.
Just a heads up, it does get a bit lively, especially over the weekends. It’s not chaotic, but expect the outdoor dining and late-night chatter at restaurants.
Things to do on Kole Idromeno Street
Besides all the pubs and eateries here, there are actually quite a few other things to do here as well, that we thought are well worth a visit.
The ‘Marubi’ National Photography Museum is located on Kole Idromeno Street and offers a fascinating collection from the Marubi family, one of the earliest photography studios in Albania.
If you’re interested in history and religion, be sure to check out the Ebu Beker Mosque, a beautiful mosque with an impressive interior and cultural significance. Just remember to dress modestly if you plan on visiting.
Best restaurants on Kole Idromeno Street
San Francisco: Our top pick was the San Francisco restaurant, known for its superb traditional Albanian cuisine along with a selection of international dishes. The chicken skewers and grilled fish were exceptionally tasty!
Bell Italia: If you’re looking for the best ice cream in town, head to Bell Italia. They have a wide variety of flavors and also serve delicious Italian dishes.
3. Where to stay in Shkoder for families & couples: Zdrale
Just a bit outside the busy city center, to the north past the big roundabout, lies the more relaxed neighborhood of Zdrale. To us, it seemed definitely quieter, perfect for couples, families, or anyone craving a slice of peace and quiet during their stay.
Zdrale seems more like a residential area compared to the city center, adding to its laid-back charm. An added bonus is the easier parking, which is great if your lodging doesn’t include a spot. This means you can easily take off for day trips to places like Rozafa Castle or Lake Shkoder.
For those with kids, Zdrale is an excellent choice, offering numerous parks and playgrounds to keep the little ones entertained. And don’t worry about meal times; there are loads of restaurants and cafes within easy walking distance.
Things to do in Zdrale
Zdrale may seem quiet, but there are still plenty of enjoyable activities. A visit to the Shkoder History Museum offers a deep dive into the city’s rich history through its impressive collection of artifacts, ranging from prehistoric times to the present day.
Another highly recommended activity, especially enjoyable with kids, is renting a bike. You could cycle down to Shkoder Lake or Rozafa Castle. Bike Rental Shkoder, located right in Zdrale, offers bike rentals starting at $5, making it a fun and affordable way to explore the area.
Best restaurants in Zdrale
Puri: Alright, hands down, probably the best Albanian food we had on our whole trip. The restaurant is located on the main road, just a short walk from most of the accommodations in Zdrale. Their menu offers a great selection of traditional dishes, all made with fresh and high-quality ingredients. Especially if you’re a fan of those typical grilled Albanian meats, then you’ll love this spot.
4. Where to stay in Shkoder for budget travelers: Parruce
In our book, Parruce is the perfect spot for anyone traveling on a budget. In this area, you’ll find plenty of affordable hostels (like Shkoder Backpackers) and guesthouses to choose from, starting at just $10 per night.
Plus, the location is ideal for exploring both the city center and its surrounding areas. You’ll find several bus stops in Parruce that can take you to popular spots like Rozafa Castle or Lake Shkoder. And if you’re feeling adventurous, you could even walk to these places from Parruce, as they are all within a reasonable distance.
One of the best things about staying in Parruce is its lively atmosphere. With many young travelers and backpackers passing through, you’ll always find something fun to do or someone interesting to meet. Especially with the area having its own super busy bar street, called 28 Nentori, of course, packed with plenty of cheap bars and affordable eateries.
Things to do in Parruce
The whole area has a unique vibe, so enjoy a night out on 28 Nentori. As mentioned before, this street is the go-to place for budget-friendly drinks and food. Here, you’ll find plenty of local specialties, such as rakia (a strong liquor), or cheap beer (around $1 per pint).
Best restaurants in Parruce
Atelier: Our favorite Italian restaurant in Parruce is definitely Atelier. I don’t think it could be any better. Their pizza was spot on, their burrata was out of this world, and their homemade pasta dishes were delicious. Plus, the prices are very reasonable for such quality food.
Primo Lounge: A little more flashy but still super affordable is Primo Lounge. It’s a cocktail and shisha rooftop restaurant located in the heart of Parruce. It’s perfect for a night out with friends or a romantic date, and the views from the rooftop are stunning at sunset.
