Tulum has probably been on your radar as one of Mexico’s hottest spots for quite a while now, and let me tell you, it definitely has a unique vibe. It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but if you’re after stunning beaches, turquoise water, delicious food, and some of the best parties in Mexico, Tulum is calling your name!

Tulum’s layout is a bit different, and it’s not your typical beach town. You’ve got the downtown area, which is a bit of a trek from the beach, and then there’s the hotel zone and Tulum Beach, sitting pretty right on the gorgeous Caribbean Sea. Figuring out in advance where to stay really is key here.

Where to Stay in Tulum Mexico – My Experience

I’ve stayed in Tulum a few times now, mostly because I just love Mexico and it’s easily one of my favorite countries to visit. The beaches, the people, the culture, and especially the food (street tacos will forever have my heart).

Over the years, my trips to Tulum have looked pretty different. On one visit, I went full backpacker mode and stayed in a hostel downtown, living on street food and cheap beers. I had so much fun, it was lively, and exactly the kind of travel I loved at the time. More recently though, I’ve stayed in the hotel zone at a beachfront resort, which was a whole different vibe, quieter, fancier, and honestly really relaxing.

And that’s the beauty of Tulum: it can be whatever you want it to be. You don’t have to splurge on a 5-star resort if that’s not your thing, you can absolutely do Tulum on a budget.

These days I do lean toward the beachfront resorts, but I still head into town for tacos and atmosphere. For me, it’s the perfect mix: a bit of laid-back luxury by the beach, with the lively buzz of Tulum just a short ride away.

The Best Areas to Stay in Tulum Mexico

As I mentioned earlier, Tulum isn’t your typical beach town where everything is crammed into one walkable strip. The best areas are a bit more spread out, and where you stay will really shape your experience.

Tulum Beach (Hotel Zone)

On a later trip, I stayed right on the beach in the Hotel Zone and let’s just say it was a whole different experience. I went to beach clubs, I stayed at luxury resorts, and woke up to white sand and turquoise water at my doorstep. It’s not exactly “authentic Mexico,” but if your goal is to relax in style, this is the spot. My stay here was one of the best hotel experiences I’ve ever had.

Tulum Town (Downtown)

When I first came to Tulum as a backpacker, I stayed downtown. It was cheap, fun, and full of incredible street food and lively little bars. The trade-off is that you’re further from the beach, but honestly, for me as a budget traveler who wanted that local vibe, it was perfect. You’ll also find plenty of boutique hotels and hostels here.

Aldea Zama

Families and groups usually prefer Aldea Zama, which sits between town and the beach. It’s more residential, with vacation rentals, condos, and plenty of space, great if you want comfort and convenience without being right in the middle of the action. However me and my family we love going on big group vacations and this area would definitely be my choice so we can all stay together in one big holiday home.

La Veleta

La Veleta is basically Tulum’s version of Brooklyn, if I may say so. It’s an up-and-coming super cool neighborhood that’s a little out of the way, and I’d guess many of you probably haven’t explored it yet. I haven’t stayed there myself, but I’ve spent plenty of time in La Veleta since most of my favorite restaurants and cafés in Tulum are located away in this area.

1. My Favorite Area to Stay in Tulum: Tulum Beach

Tulum Beach is hands-down the most popular area for tourists and honestly, it makes sense. It’s where you’ll find the best beachfront hotels, restaurants, and beach clubs. Whenever I’m in Tulum, I try to do a mix: I love enjoying the resort life on the beach with cocktails and daybeds, but I also sneak into downtown for authentic Mexican food (because nothing beats street tacos, let’s be real).

The main reason I recommend Tulum Beach is, of course, the luxury resorts right on that pristine sand. The beaches here are so well maintained, and waking up with the ocean literally outside your door feels like a dream. That said, avoid seaweed season if you can! I once came during it and while it wasn’t a total dealbreaker, it definitely took away a bit of the magic. The best months are between November and January, when the water is clear and the sand is postcard-perfect.

While staying here, I usually spend my days hopping between beach clubs like Taboo or Tantra, or heading out to nearby cenotes like Gran Cenote and Dos Ojos, which are stunning.

Sunrises on the beach are also incredible (I’ve only managed to get up for it once, but it was absolutely worth it). One of the most amazing luxury stays I’ve ever had was at The Beach Tulum Hotel. At the time it felt like a massive splurge, but honestly, it was worth every cent. Since I’m a backpacker and budget traveler at heart, I’m not exactly used to this level of luxury but waking up in a beachfront bungalow, looking straight out at palm trees, soft white sand, and the ocean was just ridiculous to me in the best way.

What I loved most is that it didn’t feel like a typical resort. Instead of one massive concrete block, it’s a collection of little bungalows scattered between palm trees right on the beach, which made it feel really peaceful and almost a bit hidden. It was exactly the kind of barefoot luxury I never knew I needed.

Another thing that really stood out to me was the service and the staff here. From the moment we arrived until the second we left, the staff were so attentive and genuinely kind. Yes, it was expensive compared to my usual trips, but it’s easily one of my favorite hotel experiences ever, and I’d stay here again in a heartbeat.

When I was researching hotels in Tulum, Casa Teka immediately caught my eye. Unlike most places in Tulum Beach, it’s not right on the sand, it’s tucked away in the mangrove forest. The setting looks so unique and a little magical, which is exactly the kind of hotel I’m looking for when I’m planning a vacation in Tulum. Otherwise I might as well stay in a resort in Cancun right?!

I haven’t stayed here yet, but it’s high on my list for a future trip. I love the idea of being surrounded by nature while still being close to the beach, and Casa Teka seems to strike that balance perfectly. If you’re into staying somewhere with a different vibe than the usual beachfront resorts, this is one of the most interesting options in Tulum.

Honestly I’m so overwhelmed by all the amazing and unique hotels in Tulum. Casa Coyote is another that stood out to me because of its eco-friendly, sustainable design. It feels very in tune with what Tulum is all about.

It’s not the kind of over-the-top luxury resort you’ll find along the beach, but that’s part of its charm. The vibe is bohemian, laid-back, and authentic, and the rooftop plunge pool is such a fun bonus. Honestly, when I was researching places to stay, this one made my shortlist just because it seemed to capture the true spirit of Tulum without trying too hard.

2. Where I Stayed in Tulum as a Backpacker: Tulum Downtown

When I first came to Tulum as a backpacker, I stayed right in Tulum Town (also called Tulum Centro or Tulum Pueblo), and honestly it was such a fun experience.

The vibe here is completely different from the beachfront resort zone. Instead of luxury hotels and beach clubs, you’ve got hostels, quirky boutique hotels, and loads of affordable Airbnbs. The best part for me was being surrounded by local life, street tacos on every corner, small bars that don’t charge beach club prices, and the general chaos of downtown Mexico (which I kind of love).

Of course, it’s not directly on the beach which is why I usually just rented a bicycle and cycled about 15 minutes down the road to the beach, which became part of my daily adventure. It’s definitely a bit of a trade-off, you save money and get more of that “real Mexico” feel, but you’re not waking up to the sound of the ocean.

That said, I’d still recommend Tulum Town for anyone traveling on a budget or for backpackers who want to meet people and eat amazing cheap food. I had some of the best tacos of my life here, and after long days at the beach, I loved coming back to the lively streets of downtown Tulum.

Kin Ha Tulum Hotel // Top Boutique Hotel in Tulum Downtown

Kin Ha Tulum Hotel was actually one of the places I seriously considered when I was looking for somewhere affordable in Tulum Centro.

What I really liked about it (and why it almost ended up being my pick) is that it has that boutique hotel charm without the high price tag. The rooms are simple but stylish, and I love that they include complimentary bike rentals which honestly makes a huge difference if you’re staying downtown and cycling to the beach every day like I usually do.

They also have a rooftop bar with views over town, which looked like the perfect spot for a sundowner. I didn’t stay here this time, but if my first choice had been booked, this would’ve been it.

Casa Agape // Coolest Hotel in Tulum Mexico

If I had to pick the “cool kid” hotel in Tulum Centro, it would be Casa Agape. I didn’t stay here myself, but it was high up on my shortlist because of its design, I’m talking beautifully styled rooms with a mix of traditional Mexican details and modern touches.

Plus, it has a rooftop pool, which feels like such a luxury in downtown Tulum, and their terrace views are gorgeous. What really stood out to me when I was researching, though, is that they include free access to a beach club. For me, that’s the best of both worlds, you get the authentic downtown vibe with tacos and street food on your doorstep, but still have a beach club to retreat to during the day.

3. Aldea Zama: Where I Would Stay on a Family Vacation

If I were planning a trip to Tulum with my family or a group of friends, Aldea Zama would be my pick. It’s tucked right between downtown and the beach zone, so you get the best of both worlds without being stuck too far in either direction.

I’ve stayed here before, and what I loved most was the mix of options with everything from sleek villas with private pools to more affordable apartments. Plus, the convenience is hard to beat. There were loads shops, cafés we could go to for breakfast, and restaurants right in the neighborhood, so we didn’t always have to bike or drive into town for a coffee or a meal. One of my favorite little finds here was Mamazul, a cozy cocktail bar that also does an incredible mezcal tasting.

Staying in Aldea Zama also means we were just a quick ride away from either the beach or downtown. For me, it struck the perfect balance: quiet enough to relax but close enough to dive into the Tulum energy whenever I wanted.

4. My Top Hidden Gem Area in Tulum: La Veleta

I’ve completely fallen in love with La Veleta, it’s definitely my new favorite area in Tulum. Before my most recent trip, I hadn’t been back in a couple of years, and wow… so much had changed. Even though I stayed in the hotel zone this time (which, to be fair, was gorgeous), I kept finding myself drawn back to La Veleta. It’s not by the beach, in fact, it sits at the far end of the main road in Tulum town but trust me, it’s worth it.

I hadn’t even heard of La Veleta before, but now I’m obsessed. The neighborhood is full of boutique hotels, incredible restaurants, and some of the best cafés I’ve been to in Tulum. I’m already planning my next trip, and this time I’ll definitely be staying in La Veleta. Sure, it’s not walking distance to the beach, but it’s close to several cenotes and packed with amazing places to eat. For me, that’s a pretty great trade-off.

Lumina at Mudra Tulum // Best Apartment in Tulum

I wouldn’t be the traveler I am if I hadn’t already started scoping out my next stay in Tulum. Next time, I’m planning to stick around for at least a month, so instead of a hotel I’ve been looking at apartments and wow, Lumina Mudra Tulum has me sold.

It’s a stunning two-bedroom apartment with that dreamy Tulum-style décor, plus a gorgeous swimming pool and even a gym. Honestly, I can already picture my mornings working from the apartment and my afternoons relaxing by the pool. It feels like the perfect mix of comfort and style for a longer stay.

Panacea Condo Tulum // Cheap Condo in Tulum

Another condo in Tulum I’ve been eyeing is Panacea, which feels like the more budget-friendly version of Lumina. It’s also located in La Veleta, has that same chic Tulum-style design, and comes with a super cool pool but at a more affordable price point.

While I definitely still have my heart set on Lumina, I think Panacea would be a fantastic option if you’re traveling on a smaller budget. Honestly, I could totally see myself staying here long-term too, it’s stylish, comfortable, and has everything you’d want for an extended stay in Tulum.

How do I get to Tulum from Playa del Carmen?

Getting from Playa del Carmen to Tulum is super easy. I usually hop on an ADO bus (think Greyhound or Flixbus style). It only takes about an hour and is cheap and reliable. If you prefer more comfort, you can also book a private transfer.

How do I get to Tulum from Cancun Airport?

I’ve tried a couple of different ways. The ADO bus is the most budget-friendly, you can catch it straight from the airport, and it takes about 2.5 hours to reach Tulum. I’ve also done a private shuttle, which was faster, more comfortable, and honestly my favorite way to get there (especially after a long flight).

Are there luxury hotels in Tulum?

Yes, plenty! My personal favorite is The Beach Tulum—definitely one of the most beautiful and relaxing luxury resorts I’ve ever stayed at.

I’ll admit I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with Tulum. The prices can be steep, seaweed season is very real, and it gets busy, especially in high season. But every time I go back, I end up having such a great time that I forget about the downsides.

There’s just something special about waking up in a beachfront bungalow and stepping straight onto the sand. That’s the kind of trip that sticks with you.

That said, I’ve also done Tulum on a budget, staying in smaller guesthouses in town, and had just as much fun. To me, that’s the beauty of Tulum—it can work for both a splurge-y luxury getaway and a more affordable adventure.
