Where to Stay in Tulum: A Guide to the Best Hotels & Areas (Updated for 2025)

Tulum has probably been on your radar as one of Mexico’s hottest spots for quite a while now, and let me tell you, it definitely has a unique vibe. It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but if you’re after stunning beaches, turquoise water, delicious food, and some of the best parties in Mexico, Tulum is calling your name!

Tulum’s layout is a bit different, and it’s not your typical beach town. You’ve got the downtown area, which is a bit of a trek from the beach, and then there’s the hotel zone and Tulum Beach, sitting pretty right on the gorgeous Caribbean Sea. Figuring out in advance where to stay really is key here.

To help you out, I’ve put together a guide on where to stay in Tulum. Whether you’re looking for a stay in the fancy hotel zone, in the chill vibe of Tulum Beach, or the more budget-friendly beach town area, I’ve got you covered with my personal tips and recommendations for your next adventure on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula.

($$) Diamante K Tulum

One of my favorite boutique hotels and beach clubs in Tulum is Diamante K. Hotel guests can enjoy the charming hotel pool, but even better is the nearly private beach the property is located on. It feels like you’re on your own little tropical island, which is quite unique in Tulum.

Where to stay in Tulum – Best Areas

As I’ve mentioned in the introduction, Tulum is not your typical beach town where everything is within walking distance of Tulum Beach. Tulum’s best areas are a bit more spread out.

Tulum Beach, as the name suggests, is right on the beach and is the ideal spot if you’re visiting for the first time and looking for some of the best beach hotels.

Backpackers and budget travelers usually stay in Tulum Town, where you’ll find more affordable boutique hotels and hostels.

If you want to hang out in beach clubs, enjoy the white sand beaches, and experience some luxury, I recommend staying in the Tulum Hotel Zone.

Families and groups will have the best time in Aldea Zama, where you’ll find many vacation homes and apartments for rent.

Lastly, if you’re looking for something a little more secluded, I suggest staying in Soliman Bay, just outside of Tulum.

Where to Stay in Tulum for the First Time: Tulum Beach

Tulum Beach is the most popular area for tourists, and for good reason. It’s where you’ll find some of the best beachfront hotels, restaurants, and bars.

One of the main reasons people visit Tulum is to experience its beautiful beaches, so why not stay right on one? You can wake up to the sound of waves crashing and enjoy a morning swim before heading out to explore.

The Tulum Beach area is located right next to the hotel zone, so you’ll be within walking distance of some of the most iconic beach clubs and restaurants. You’re also very close to some cenotes and more secluded beaches in the area.

Where to stay in Tulum for a Hidden Gem: Soliman Bay

Just a little outside of Tulum, about halfway between Tulum and Akumal, lies the small beach of Soliman Bay. This hidden gem offers a laid-back atmosphere, pristine white sand beaches, and crystal-clear waters perfect for snorkeling.

There isn’t much going on apart from a few stunning boutique hotels and villas you’ll find on the beach. However, because it’s a bit off the beaten path and lacks public restaurants or beach clubs, there are fewer tourists around, allowing you to enjoy most of the beach to yourself.

It’s definitely the perfect location for a romantic getaway. However, if you plan on exploring Tulum and its surroundings, I recommend having a rental car when you stay here. Otherwise, you’ll need shuttles or private drivers to get around.

Things to do in Soliman Bay:

  • Akumal Beach: Just a short drive away, you’ll find the beautiful Akumal Beach. This spot is super popular because youre almost guranteed to see sea turtles when snorkeling here.
  • Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve: Take a boat tour through this UNESCO World Heritage Site to see an array of wildlife and stunning views of the lagoons and mangroves.
  • Visit nearby Mayan ruins: Tulum’s iconic cliffside ruins are just a short drive away and most of your hotels will be happy to organize a tour for you. Click here for tours of the Mayan Ruins

Best Hotels to stay in Soliman Bay

Mereva Tulum

My favorite boutique hotel in Soliman Bay is Mereva Tulum. Located right on the beach, it offers spacious, beautifully designed rooms with stunning ocean views. The staff is incredibly friendly and ensures you have everything you need for a comfortable stay. The highlight is their wellness and spa treatments on the private dock, providing breathtaking views while enjoying a massage.
