Where to Stay in Weligama – Best Areas
Weligama may not be a large town, but it offers several great areas to stay, each with its own unique vibe. Here are my favorite neighborhoods to help you decide where to stay.
If it’s your first time visiting, keep it simple and stay at Weligama Beach. It’s the perfect base for exploring, with plenty of hotels, restaurants, and everything you need close by.
For budget travelers, Pelena is a great option. Located along the coast toward Mirissa, it’s full of affordable hotels and backpacker hostels, making it ideal for those traveling on a budget.
Digital nomads will love Kadawatha, which is a little further inland. It’s home to some great apartments and coworking spaces, offering a quieter atmosphere perfect for remote work.
If you’re seeking serenity and luxury, head to Wattakgoda. Nestled in the jungle further inland, this area is known for its stunning retreats and high-end resorts, perfect for a peaceful getaway.
And for those looking for top-notch beach hotels, I recommend Weligama Point. Located just outside the city center, it offers a mix of luxury and convenience right by the water.
Where to Stay in Weligama for First-Time Visitors: Weligama Beach
Weligama Beach is situated in the heart of Weligama and is one of the busiest areas in town. It’s an excellent choice for first-time visitors, thanks to its perfect location. From here, you can easily explore Weligama and nearby towns on a scooter.
The beach is also home to some of the best bars and restaurants in the area. Plus, many of the local surf schools are based here, making it a hub for food, fun, and surfing.
Things to do in Weligama Beach:
- If you’re looking for the perfect spot to enjoy sunset vibes, Layback Rooftop Cafe is a must! Their cocktails and beers are awesome for sunset drinks, but don’t stop there—they also offer a fantastic breakfast and lunch. It’s actually part of Layback Surf Camp, one of the coolest surf camps in town!
- For lunch near Weligama Beach, you’ve got to check out Plan B—my absolute go-to! Not only do they serve some of the best coffee around, but their massive garden is such a chill spot. It’s the best place to take your laptop and get some work done!
- Speaking of surfing, Layback Surf Camp is definitely worth a visit, but there are plenty more surf schools along the beach. If you’re looking for lessons, Lucky’s Surf School is hands-down the best and most popular.

Where to Stay in Weligama for Affordable Hotels: Pelena
If you keep heading down the main road towards Mirissa, you’ll stumble upon Pelena—a chilled-out extension of Weligama Beach. It’s got the same dreamy surf vibe as Weligama Beach but feels a bit more low-key and relaxed. This is the spot where you’ll find loads of surf hotels, hostels, surf camps, and plenty of budget-friendly places to stay.
The vibe here is amazing—super chill and full of backpackers, which makes it so easy to meet people! The food scene is a total treat too. You’ve got everything from authentic local restaurants to fancy Australian-inspired nice cafes where you can get your flat white.
For budget travelers (like me!), Pelena is perfect. There are so many affordable options, whether you’re looking for a cozy guesthouse or a fun surf hostel. And since it’s so close to Mirissa, it’s perfect for soaking up those laid-back beach vibes while still being in the heart of the action.
Things to do in Pelena:
- If you’re into surfing, you’ve got to check out Kuma Surf Camp—it’s the real deal! Their surf camps are some of the best I’ve ever come across. They’ve got locations in Bali and Sri Lanka, and their Weligama camp is just stunning. It’s super close to the beach, so you can practically roll out of bed and hit the waves. Their Hiriketiya Beach location is also an absolute paradise. It’s hands down the prettiest and most peaceful surf school I’ve ever seen. Totally worth a visit if you’re in the area!
- My absolute favorite coffee and breakfast spot in Weligama (and yes, I still dream about it) is Nomad Cafe. They serve some of the best coffee around, but the real star for me is their shakshuka! Just a heads-up though, the cafe is pretty small, so you might have to wait a bit for a table.
