I went into this with almost no expectations, but the value for money in Malaga is unmatched compared to anywhere else I visited in Spain. The boutique hotels here are so chic and stunning, but surprisingly affordable. I genuinely wished I could have stayed longer just to enjoy the rooms, the pools and the rooftops.

The Best Boutique Hotels in Malaga – My Quick Answer

If you asked me for the absolute best place to stay, I’d tell you it’s Hotel Well and Come. This is where I spent my first two nights in Spain and I’m still impressed by it. It’s for sure one of the coolest hotels I’ve ever stayed at.

The location is amazing, it’s right in the center in a beautiful, traditional building, but the inside feels super fresh and chic.

From the second we walked in, the vibe was just honestly amazing. The staff were genuinely lovely, especially Michael at the front desk. He checked us in and made everything feel super easy. I don’t usually splurge on “upscale” hotels, but for the price, this felt like such a great deal.

The absolute highlight in my opinion was the rooftop. It has a gorgeous terrace and a pool that looks out over the city. I was there in early April, so the water was freezing. But the sky was that perfect Spanish blue, and I decided I couldn’t leave without jumping in at least once. It was freezing cold but worth it!

I also have to mention the Catalonia Molina Lario, because it was actually my first choice when I was doing my research. It also has an amazing rooftop pool and super modern, chic rooms, but it was completely booked out for my dates. I was disappointed to miss it, but it’s definitely where I’m staying next time I’m in town.

My Top Tips for Staying in Malaga

1. Stay Central

Since Malaga is so walkable, I highly recommend picking a hotel right in the city center. I was able to walk from my front door to basically every tourist attraction, the beach, and tons of cafes. It just makes life easier. In my opinion, staying outside the center kind of ruins that walkability that makes Malaga so great.

2. Watch Out for Parking

If you’re traveling by car, be super careful. I’ve made the mistake before of booking a hotel on a street I couldn’t even drive to (European streets, am I right?). I ended up having to hunt down a public garage blocks away. Always double-check that the hotel actually has accessible parking before you hit book it.

3. Get an eSIM

Having data on my phone is a total non-negotiable for me at this point. Whether it’s navigating to the train station or booking a last-minute hotel on the go, it has saved me so many times. Generally, the closer you are to the main sights, the higher the chance the food won’t be great. 6. Just Call the Uber or Taxi!

I am officially on a personal vendetta against Spanish cobblestone streets. I’ve tried to be the “tough traveler” and walk 15 minutes from the train station with my suitcase, but those become the longest 15 minutes of your life. I’m at the point now where I just take an Uber or a taxi. Trust me, I’m too old for the suitcase-vs-cobblestone struggle!

I personally stayed at the first one on this list, and the other two were the top contenders from my research. I spend way too much time researching hotels before I book, so these are all places I would 100% stay at myself on my next visit. Let’s get into it!

1. Hotel Well and Come Malaga

First up is Hotel Well and Come Malaga. To this day, it’s probably one of the best boutique hotels I’ve ever stayed at. From the minute we arrived, I just absolutely loved it. The staff were amazing andI have to shout out Michael, who checked us in. He was super professional and gave us a ton of great tips for the city.

The hotel is right in the city center in a traditional Spanish building, which is gorgeous, but the inside is super modern. The rooms were surprisingly spacious and the beds were so comfortable that I actually slept like a baby.

I only had two nights here, but I wish I had more time to just enjoy the space. One morning, I woke up early to squeeze the most out of the day and went to their gym. It’s open 24/7 and, while small, it actually has weights and a smith machine, which is definitely not common for a hotel gym! After that, I went straight to the rooftop.

Even though the pool was freezing in early April, I had to jump in, followed by a coffee at the rooftop bar. Honestly, my day couldn’t have started better.

In terms of the cost, the pricing obviously changes with the season, but we paid just over $200 per night. For a 4-star boutique hotel of this quality, I think it was an absolute bargain. I’d stay here again in a heartbeat.

2. Icon Malabar

Second on the list is Icon Malabar, which is probably one of the most popular 4-star boutique hotels in Malaga right now. I spent a lot of time researching this one because I was actually very close to booking it.

The location is incredible, it’s in the trendy Soho area, and you can basically walk to every single tourist spot from the front door. The design is stunning both inside and out (it has a very cool, colonial vibe), and from what I’ve read, the breakfast and the restaurant are supposed to be top-tier.

If you’re looking for a very upscale, chic stay right in the old town of Malaga, I’d 100% consider this place. The only reason I ended up passing on it is that it’s a bit pricier than Hotel Well and Come, and it doesn’t have a pool or a gym.

I know I said the pool was freezing in April, but if you’re visiting in the peak of summer, having a place for a quick dip between sightseeing stops is actually something I would really appreciate. But, if you don’t care about a morning swim and just want a beautiful, high-end base for exploring, this property looks incredible.

3. Catalonia Molina Lario

Lastly on my list is the Catalonia Molina Lario. This was actually my very first choice for my trip to Malaga, but it was fully booked for my dates. That’s how I ended up at the Well and Come, which turned out great, but I’m still keeping my eye on this one.

The reason I wanted to stay here initially is that I’d seen their rooftop pool on social media. It has a direct, stunning view of the Malaga Cathedral, and I thought, “I have to stay there.” The whole rooftop terrace with the bar looks incredible, and I can only imagine how cool the vibe is during the peak of summer.

The design is exactly what I look for in a boutique hotel, very chic, modern, and clean. I’ve read a ton of reviews, and people seem to genuinely love it. The big highlights for most people are always the amazing breakfast, the comfortable beds, and, of course, the iconic rooftop terrace.

There’s a high chance I’ll book this for my next trip just to finally see how it stacks up against my first stay.

If I was to come here, I would probably do two days in one of the city hotels I mentioned above to explore Malaga proper, and then move into the hills to this hotel to properly relax in a more nature-focused setting. It’s the perfect way to finish a trip.

Let’s start with location first: I would definitely pick somewhere in Malaga that’s very central so you’ll be able to walk pretty much anywhere you need to go. As for the actual hotel, I stayed at the Well and Come Malaga, which is a beautiful 4-star hotel that I highly recommend.

What is the best luxury hotel in Malaga?

There are plenty of 5-star luxury hotels in Malaga that are beautiful, however, I’m definitely more of an upscale boutique hotel type person. I don’t like it when hotels are huge, if that makes sense. In that category, I think the Icon Malabar is one of the best luxury hotels in Malaga.

I usually recommend families to stay in larger houses or apartments when in Malaga and there are a few really nice ones on the outskirts.
