Is Malaga Worth Visiting? My Honest Review in 2026

I’ve just recently finished a huge trip all around Spain, and Malaga was actually one of the very first cities I visited and I have to say, I was really surprised by how much I loved it.

In my head, I had Malaga pictured as just a typical beach vacation spot or a super touristy corner of Andalusia. And while it does have that side to it, there was also so much amazing culture, food, and history to see that I ended up having a really cool experience.

In this guide, I want to answer one of the most basic questions I’ve been asked recently which is ‘Is Malaga worth visiting’, so you get a better idea of what to expect when you plan your own trip.

I’ll be sharing my own personal experience of what it was like to be there, including specifically what I loved about the city and a few things I didn’t like so much.

Is Malaga Worth Visiting? My Quick Answer

Before we get into the nitty-gritty details, I want to give you the short version: Yes, Malaga is definitely worth visiting. I spent three full days exploring the city, and it was the perfect amount of time to wander through the historical center (the Old Town), hang out on the beach, and even get some hiking in. While the historical center is undeniably beautiful, I know some people find it a little overpriced or touristy. Personally, I still thought it was 100% worth it.

I was a massive fan of the Mercado de Atarazanas, which is the main market hall filled with incredible food and fresh produce. I also loved all the small hidden tapas restaurants in the Old Town while I know some people claim they’re all tourist traps, but I completely disagree. I had some amazing, authentic meals there.

Beyond the food, we visited the Alcazaba de Malaga (the Moorish fortress) and even did a day trip out to El Torcal de Antequera for some hiking, which was stunning.

All in all, Malaga is a fantastic all-rounder. Between the food, the culture, the beaches, and the nature nearby, it’s a great deal for a Spanish city break. So yes, in my opinion, it’s definitely worth the trip!

Malaga vs Granada vs Sevilla

Since Malaga, Granada, and Sevilla are all in the same region of Southern Spain (Andalusia), I get asked all the time: “Which one is the best?” and “Which one should I visit?” My standard answer is usually that you should visit all of them because they are all incredible!

However, I have to be honest, from a pure city standpoint, Sevilla is probably my favorite, followed closely by Granada. If you’re a total culture buff, those two are hard to beat because the Real Alcázar in Sevilla and the Alhambra in Granada are just so unique and breathtaking.

But here is where Malaga probably wins: the beach. Neither Granada nor Sevilla are on the coast, but Malaga is. I think Malaga is actually the best all-rounder in the sense that I could hang out on the beach, visit a beautiful castle, and I can eat tapas in a super cute historical old town all in the same day.

If you want a really cool mix of a beach holiday and a culture trip, I would actually pick Malaga over the others.

What I Loved About Malaga Spain

The Amazing Food

I enjoyed the food in Malaga so much. Especially in the historic center, there were so many amazing little tapas restaurants, and I had some truly delicious meals. I definitely did quite a bit of research beforehand to find the spots that are actually good, because I really wanted to avoid any overpriced tourist traps. My absolute favorite was La Tasquita de en Medio, they had the most delicious fried anchovies!

The Beach

One of my favorite things about visiting Malaga was that I could do all the cultural things, like exploring the Old Town, eating my way through tapas bars, and visiting the Alcazaba, but still hang out by the water. Playa de la Malagueta is actually really beautiful, especially for a city beach. Having an amazing beach like that right next to the town, especially in the summer is a huge plus in my book.

Malaga is Super Walkable

While I did have a car for part of my time in Spain, I almost didn’t need it at all in Malaga, which I loved. Everything is so walkable; you can go from the beach to the Old Town and literally explore the whole city on foot. I prefer that so much more than having to deal with driving or figuring out public transport.

The Beautiful Architecture

My favorite part of Malaga has to be the Old Town because it’s just so beautiful. I know many European cities have historic centers, but I’m honestly obsessed with the small cobblestone streets and the stunning old buildings. Seeing the churches and castles is just mind-blowing for me as an American; it’s the kind of history I’ll never get sick of seeing.

What I Didn’t Like About Malaga Spain

It’s Very Touristy

I have to be honest with you, Malaga is incredibly touristy. It’s easily one of the most popular cities in Spain, and even though I visited during the shoulder season, it was still fairly busy. It never felt completely overcrowded, but what bothered me the most was that so many restaurants in the Old Town are clearly geared toward tourists, meaning they’re overpriced and not actually that good.

I managed to find some cool, authentic spots, but I did have to work for it. I can only imagine how overrun and chaotic the city gets in the middle of summer!

It’s Not Always Beautiful

Without wanting to complain too much, one thing I noticed is that Malaga isn’t “pretty” everywhere.

Once you step outside the historic Old Town and the main tourist center, the city loses its charm pretty quickly. It’s mostly just blocks of old, not-so-pretty apartment buildings. It’s definitely a great place to visit for the culture and the beach, but outside of those areas, it’s not necessarily a place where I’d want to live.

My Favorite Things to Do in Malaga

1. Explore the Mercado Central de Atarazanas

Probably one of the best things I did was eat my way through the Mercado Central de Atarazanas. This is the main market hall in Malaga; it looks beautiful with its massive stained-glass window and is packed with vendors selling incredible food and fresh produce. I tried everything from local cheeses to Ibérico ham and even some huevos rotos (broken eggs). And, of course, I had plenty of coffee while enjoying the local vibe.

2. Visit the Alcazaba de Malaga & Castillo de Gibralfaro

I’m a huge fan of visiting castles and churches and I know not everyone is as obsessed as I am, but I find European architecture fascinating. Especially here in Andalusia, there is so much Moorish influence, which gives the castles a North African vibe that is just stunning. The Alcazaba and the Castillo de Gibralfaro were both amazing when I visited, and the views over the city and the sea are some of the best you’ll get. I highly recommend checking them both out.

3. Eat As Many Tapas as You Can

I’ll be honest, I overate on tapas more than once in Malaga. If you’ve never had them, tapas are small shared plates that you usually enjoy with a glass of wine or a cold beer. My personal favorites are the fried anchovies, grilled Padrón peppers, croquettes, and, of course, plates of Ibérico ham and olives.

4. Explore the Old Town of Malaga

I really loved the Malaga Old Town; it’s full of cute little alleyways and cobblestone streets with hidden bars and restaurants literally tucked away around every corner. I also highly recommend walking through Malaga Park (Paseo del Parque) right next to it. It’s packed with beautiful palm trees and fountains and it was a really nice green oasis right in the city.

I actually have a full, detailed guide on the best things to do in Malaga, so you should definitely check that out if you want my complete list of activities! There is a bunch of other cool stuff I couldn’t fit into this specific post.

Where to Stay in Malaga Spain

Of course, Malaga has multiple areas to stay in with plenty of cool neighborhoods, but from my own experience, I can tell you that if you are visiting as a typical tourist, you should keep things easy and stay either in the Old Town (Historic Center) or by the beach.

We stayed in the Old Town at Hotel Well and Come Malaga, which I highly recommend. It’s a beautiful, modern hotel set inside a traditional building right in the heart of the Old Town.

My personal highlight was definitely the incredible rooftop pool and lounge area. The views over Malaga are stunning, and I’ll be honest, I don’t always stay at the fanciest hotels, but this was for sure one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever stayed at.

Here are the hotels in Malaga I recommend the most:
