When Is the Best Time to Visit San Francisco? My Seasonal Guide for 2026

One thing I definitely had to learn the hard way during our California road trip is that not all of California is sunshine and blue skies, even in summer.

We visited San Francisco in July, and oh boy, the weather was a mixed bag. One day, we had massive amounts of fog and clouds, while other days were a little warmer with some blue skies here and there. It was definitely not the sunny California weather I had imagined!

San Francisco and other parts of Northern California are known for their unpredictable weather, especially along the coast. So if you’re planning a trip here, it’s worth knowing what to expect before you book your flights and hotels.

To help you plan your visit and hopefully avoid some of the weather surprises I experienced myself, I’ve put together this guide on the best time to visit San Francisco, including what each season is like, when I’d personally go back, and a few tips to help you make the most of your trip.

When Is the Best Time to Visit San Francisco? My Quick Answer

I’ve visited San Francisco a few times now, and from experience, I can tell you that when you visit makes a huge difference to your experience.

If you want the quick answer, I’d say September and October are the best months to visit San Francisco. These are the months when you’re more likely to get some actual blue skies, warmer temperatures and sunny days.

For me, San Francisco is a city I want to explore outside. I want to wear shorts and a T-shirt, walk around the different neighborhoods, sit outside at cafes and just enjoy the sunshine. And while that might sound like pretty normal California weather, it’s actually not something you can take for granted in San Francisco!

From November through March, temperatures are cooler and rain is more common. Then, in spring and early summer, you have June Gloom and Karl the Fog to contend with. Yes, Karl the Fog is a real thing, and he is the worst! When I visited, there were days when the Golden Gate Bridge was so covered in fog that I couldn’t see it at all!

The good news is that late summer and early fall generally offer much better conditions for exploring the city. There are also plenty of outdoor events happening around this time, from the Moon Festival to Flower Piano and Opera in the Park.

San Francisco by Season

Spring (March, April & May)

Spring in San Francisco can be a bit of a gamble. You might get unlucky and end up with rainy, overcast days and pretty chilly temperatures, or you could get the complete opposite, with beautiful blue skies, mild weather and flowers blooming in the parks.

Hotel prices are generally more affordable during this time, so I’m definitely not saying you shouldn’t visit in spring. Just be prepared for the possibility of some unpredictable weather. If you get lucky, it can be a fantastic time to explore the city without the higher prices you might find later in the year.

Summer (June, July & August)

Summer can be just as unpredictable as spring in San Francisco, which I know sounds absolutely ridiculous for California!

The first time I visited San Francisco in summer, I had amazing blue skies. I went to a music festival, spent late nights drinking on patios and just had a fantastic time. When I visited again in July more recently, though, it was literally cold. I needed a jacket, the weather was chilly, and we had plenty of fog and clouds.

So yes, summer in San Francisco can be a bit of a hit or miss. You might get beautiful sunny days or you might end up wondering why you packed so many T-shirts.

Hotel prices can also be higher during the summer, so you’re potentially paying more without necessarily getting better weather. Just something to keep in mind!

Fall (September, October & November)

If I had to pick one season to visit San Francisco, I’d definitely go with early fall, especially September and October.

I haven’t personally visited during this time yet, but I’ve heard amazing things from friends who live here and grew up in the city. Apparently, this is when San Francisco finally gets some of its best weather, with warmer temperatures, more sunshine and a lot less of the fog that can take over the city in spring and early summer.

It’s also a really lively time to visit, with plenty of outdoor events and festivals happening around the city. So if you want to explore different neighborhoods, sit outside at cafes and enjoy San Francisco without constantly worrying about the weather, early fall sounds pretty damn good to me.

Winter (December, January & February)

In my opinion, winter is probably the least appealing time to visit San Francisco, especially if you’re coming here hoping for sunny California weather.

The temperatures aren’t usually freezing, but it can get quite cold, rainy and cloudy, which isn’t exactly ideal when so many of the things you want to do in San Francisco involve being outside. Walking across the Golden Gate Bridge, exploring the cool neighborhoods or spending time in the parks is simply more enjoyable when the weather cooperates.

That said, winter can have its advantages. Hotel prices are often lower, and the city can be less busy than during the summer. So if you’re traveling on a budget and don’t mind packing a rain jacket, winter could still be worth considering.

Personally, though, if I were planning another trip to San Francisco, I’d aim for September or October instead.

June Gloom & Karl the Fog

I’ll be honest, I’d never even heard of June Gloom or Karl the Fog before my most recent visit to San Francisco. And from what I understand, they’re both closely related to the same thing: the foggy, overcast weather that can roll into San Francisco and other parts of coastal California during spring and early summer.

And I don’t want to be a Debbie Downer here, but it honestly pissed me off quite a bit!

I just love being outside when I’m traveling, and especially in San Francisco, where seeing the Golden Gate Bridge was one of the biggest things on my bucket list. So having the weather completely ruin those views was a little frustrating.

We had days when it was chilly and cloudy, and the fog was so thick that the Golden Gate Bridge was literally nowhere to be seen. I couldn’t see a single bit of it!

I’ll make sure to include plenty of pictures in this article so you can see exactly what I’m talking about. And if you’re planning a trip to San Francisco, this is definitely something to keep in mind when choosing when to visit.

Events in San Francisco

San Francisco is a big city, so there’s obviously plenty going on throughout the year. From major music festivals and cultural celebrations to outdoor art events and running races, there’s something happening in pretty much every season.

Here are a few events worth knowing about when planning your trip.

Carnaval San Francisco

Carnaval San Francisco is a huge celebration of Latin American and Caribbean culture, with colorful costumes, music, dancing and a big parade. It’s usually held over Memorial Day weekend in May, so it’s a fun event to look into if you’re visiting in late spring.

Bay to Breakers

Bay to Breakers is one of San Francisco’s most famous annual events. It’s a massive footrace that takes participants through the city, and it’s known for its costumes, party atmosphere and some pretty ridiculous outfits. If you happen to be in San Francisco when it’s happening, it’s definitely something different to experience!

Chinatown Moon Festival

The Chinatown Moon Festival celebrates the Mid-Autumn Festival, with cultural performances, food, lanterns and plenty of activities around San Francisco’s Chinatown. The exact date changes every year because it’s based on the lunar calendar, but it usually falls in September or October.

Opera in the Park

If you enjoy music and spending time outdoors, Opera in the Park is a really cool event to look into. It brings live opera performances to an outdoor setting in San Francisco, making it a lovely way to enjoy some music without having to book a ticket for a traditional opera house.

Outside Lands Music Festival

Outside Lands is one of San Francisco’s biggest music festivals, held in Golden Gate Park, usually in August. Alongside the music, you’ll find food vendors, drinks and plenty of other entertainment, so it can be a really fun addition to a summer trip.

Just keep in mind that major events can affect hotel prices and availability, so if you’re planning to visit around one of these festivals, I’d book your accommodation ahead of time!

FAQs About When to Visit San Francisco

What Is the Best Month to Visit San Francisco?

I’d say September and October are the best months to visit San Francisco. During this time of year, you’re more likely to get warmer temperatures, blue skies and sunny days that make exploring the city so much more enjoyable.

Is San Francisco Worth Visiting?

Absolutely! If I had to pick just one major city in California to visit as a tourist, I’d probably choose San Francisco. Sure, the beach vibe in San Diego is cool, but when it comes to sightseeing, exploring different neighborhoods and seeing iconic landmarks, I think San Francisco has a lot more to offer.

Should I Visit San Francisco in the Summer?

Yes, absolutely! I’d just try to visit in late summer, ideally August or even late August, to give yourself a better chance of avoiding the worst of June Gloom and Karl the Fog.

Those two definitely messed with my own experience a little bit, especially because I barely got to see the Golden Gate Bridge during my most recent visit.

Is San Francisco Expensive to Visit?

I’d say it definitely can be, but it doesn’t have to be. There are so many awesome free things to do in San Francisco, and the city is fairly walkable, depending on where you’re staying. I’ve also found some great budget-friendly accommodation options here, so you can absolutely visit without spending a fortune.

How Many Days in San Francisco Do I Need?

I always recommend spending at least two full days in San Francisco. That gives you enough time to see the main tourist attractions and explore a few different neighborhoods without rushing around too much.

However, if you want to experience more than just the typical tourist spots, I’d say three to four full days is ideal. I spent four days in total, and I thought it was perfect for what I wanted.

Final Thoughts on What Month Has the Best Weather to Visit San Francisco

I can say pretty confidently that late summer and early fall are your safest bets for visiting San Francisco if you’re hoping for good weather. There’s a much better chance of getting warmer temperatures and blue skies, even if hotel prices might be a little higher.

That said, I don’t think you need to rule out spring or early summer completely. The weather can still be lovely during these months, but it’s a little more of a gamble. When I visited in July, I had some suuuuper foggy and cloudy days, but I also had a couple of days with sunshine and blue skies.

Ultimately, I’d aim for September or October if I were planning another trip to San Francisco. You can’t control the weather, obviously, but you can at least give yourself a better chance of seeing the city at its best.

I hope this guide on when to visit San Francisco gave you a better idea of what to expect throughout the year and helped you figure out when to plan your next trip!
