What Are the Best Coffee Shops in San Luis Obispo? My Quick Answer
I love coffee so much that pretty much wherever I travel, I’m always on the hunt for a few of the best coffee shops in town. And I mean wherever – California, Europe, Japan, wherever I happen to be. Finding a good cafe has basically become part of my travel routine, so obviously I had to do the same thing here in San Luis Obispo.
First things first, I’m definitely a specialty coffee guy. A cappuccino, latte or flat white is usually my go-to order, so most of the cafes on this list are based on that. If your ideal coffee is a double cinnamon-swirl iced shaken Frappuccino with 17 different ingredients on top, then some of these places might not be what you’re looking for.
But if you just want a really good coffee in a nice cafe, I’ve got a couple of places I can definitely recommend.
Number one would be Scout Coffee, which is for sure one of my favorite coffee shops in SLO. Their latte was fantastic, and they also have a bunch of homemade pastries and bakery items that are super delicious.
And then there’s Linnaea’s Cafe, which I think is probably the best overall cafe in San Luis Obispo. It’s super cozy, the coffee is delicious, and their cakes are honestly to die for.

1. Linnaea’s Cafe // The Best Cafe in San Luis Obispo Overall
Opening Hours: 7:39am-8pm
Price: $$
My Rating: ★★★★★
Menu & Location
My favorite cafe in San Luis Obispo overall was Linnaea’s Cafe, and I don’t even know where to start because there are so many things I want to talk about.
First of all, the whole decor is just so cozy and so well put together. From the outside, it actually doesn’t look like much, but once you get inside and especially when you see the patio out back, it’s a completely different story. The patio is super peaceful and just such a nice place to sit for a while.
For coffee, I had a latte since that’s my usual order, and it was perfect. We also tried an iced matcha, which was really tasty, and then got a slice of their cake. I can’t even remember what flavor it was now, but it was also super yummy.

2. Scout Coffee San Luis Obispo // Best Coffee in SLO
Opening Hours: 6:30am-6:30pm
Price: $$$
My Rating: ★★★★★
Menu & Location
Scout Coffee is a small family-owned chain with a few locations around California, and I had already been to their coffee shop in Morro Bay and loved it. So obviously, I had to come here again when I was in San Luis Obispo.
And once again, I had a great time. It was pretty busy when we got here, so we probably had to wait in line for about 10–15 minutes, but once we got our coffee, it was totally worth it.
We ordered two lattes and one of their cookies, and the coffee was fantastic. I already knew I liked Scout from the Morro Bay location, so I wasn’t surprised that they delivered again here in SLO.
I didn’t get a croissant this time, but from my experience at their Morro Bay location, their homemade croissants are super flaky and just perfect. So if you see one in the pastry case, I’d definitely recommend grabbing one!

3. Field Day Coffee
Opening Hours: 7am-6pm
Price: $$$
My Rating: ★★★★
Menu & Location
I really loved Field Day Coffee, and out of all the coffee shops here in San Luis Obispo, this one literally felt like it could’ve been right in Santa Barbara.
It just has that same kind of vibe. There’s a cool outdoor patio, a kinda warehouse-style design, and if I’m not mistaken, it also turns into a wine bar in the evenings. So basically, everything about it reminded me of Santa Barbara.
So obviously, when I got here, I immediately loved it.
We kept things fairly simple and just had a latte and a matcha, and then sat outside because it was a gorgeous day for it. I didn’t try any of the food here, but from what I could see, they mainly have pastries and a few smaller things.
And honestly, I didn’t even know they also served wine at the time. If I had known, I definitely would’ve loved to come back in the afternoon for a glass of local wine and just hang out here for a while.

4. Sally Loo’s Wholesome Cafe // Best Breakfast in San Luis Obispo
Opening Hours: 6am-10pm
Price: $$
My Rating: ★★★★
Menu & Location
Sally Loo’s Wholesome Cafe is exactly that: it’s such a wholesome place.
You know how so many coffee shops and cafes nowadays kinda look the same? Fairly minimalist design, lots of white walls, not always particularly cozy? Well, Sally Loo’s is basically the opposite of that.
The cafe is a little quirky, but it feels super cozy, and I had the best breakfast in SLO right here.
There’s nothing fancy about the food either, and that’s exactly what I liked about it. We’re talking breakfast burritos, eggs, sourdough and other simple breakfast classics. Nothing crazy, just really good, comforting food that you actually want to eat in the morning.
And of course, the coffee was really tasty too, so this one is definitely worth checking out if you want a proper breakfast along with your morning coffee.

5. Joebella Coffee SLO // Best for To-Go Coffee
Opening Hours: 7am-4pm
Price: $
My Rating: ★★★
Menu & Location
On our very last morning, when we were leaving San Luis Obispo, we stopped at Joebella Coffee for a takeaway cup of coffee.
A lot of the other cafes I’ve mentioned are right around the downtown area, where parking can be a little annoying. Joebella is a little further out, though, so for us it was the perfect place to stop and grab a coffee on the go before getting back in the car.
They make really good barista-style lattes and cappuccinos, and the whole coffee shop is fairly no-fuss. You’re not necessarily coming here to sit around for two hours and have a whole brunch experience.
But the coffee was excellent, and for what we needed that morning, it was honestly perfect.
