Is Lake Tahoe Worth Visiting? My Honest Review 2026

I just visited Lake Tahoe for the very first time in the summer, and I can already tell you, I’m fully obsessed.

I always used to say that if I ever settled down somewhere, it had to be near the ocean. But after spending a few days in Lake Tahoe, I’m not so sure anymore.

The water here is just unbelievably clear, the scenery around is stunning, and there’s so much to do. From hiking, kayaking or relaxing on the beach in summer, to skiing in winter, it pretty much has all the things that I enjoy doing.

I definitely could have stayed much longer, and I feel like by saying all of this I’m already giving away my answer to the question, is Lake Tahoe worth visiting?

But, of course, there’s a lot more to it than that. In this guide, I’ll share exactly what I loved about Lake Tahoe, a few things I wasn’t crazy about, and some of my favorite things to do in Lake Tahoe  to help you decide whether it should be on your travel bucket list.

Is Lake Tahoe Worth Visiting? My Quick Answer

I know I got a little ahead of myself in the intro and gave the answer away, but yes, Lake Tahoe is 100% worth visiting.

I visited Lake Tahoe as part of an almost month-long road trip through California, where I drove from San Francisco to San Diego. Looking back now, I can pretty confidently say that Lake Tahoe was probably my favorite stop on the entire road trip.

I know it might not necessarily be for everyone, but I love the outdoors. I love biking, hiking, paddleboarding, fishing, all those types of things are right up my alley.

And then on top of all that, Lake Tahoe is just absolutely gorgeous too. One specific day that’s still on my mind is when we went for a hike along the shore and stopped by this little bay where there was literally no one else. We put our towels down and went for a swim. Crystal-clear water, mountains all around, it really was pretty special, you guys.

I was also pleasantly surprised by how affordable it was. I mean, yes, it’s California, so obviously it’s not cheap, but there were loads of hotels and cute little motels to choose from that weren’t expensive at all.

I just assumed Lake Tahoe would be more expensive during the summer, so it was nice to see that it’s actually a fairly affordable destination.

What I Love About Lake Tahoe California

1. The Beautiful Nature

I know this is kind of a given, but I personally was really amazed by just how beautiful it is here. This was my very first bigger trip through California and also my first time visiting Lake Tahoe in the summer.

When I arrived, I was honestly so impressed by the mountains all around, the crystal-clear water, the pine trees, and all the little beaches. I know it sounds cliché, but it really is one of the most stunning places I’ve visited in the USA.

2. Accommodation Was Surprisingly Affordable

I briefly mentioned this above already, but I was genuinely shocked by how affordable the hotels around Lake Tahoe were when I visited, which was in June by the way.

Some newly renovated little motels started at around $75 a night, and for around $130 a night we ended up staying in a really nice lodge, the Station House Inn. Overall, I was super happy with how affordable accommodation was here.

3. There Are Many Free Activities

I love a good free activity, and Lake Tahoe, at least in the summer, has loads of them!

We did a lot of hiking, which is obviously completely free. We also spent plenty of time at beaches like Chimney Beach and Secret Harbour Beach, and if you have your own paddleboard or kayak, getting out on the lake won’t cost you a thing either.

4. It’s Not Super Busy in the Summer

Another thing I was surprised by was how not busy it was, at least in some areas. We stayed in South Lake Tahoe and explored pretty much all around the lake from there. With a few exceptions, I never really felt like anywhere was overcrowded.

There were plenty of hotels available, I never had to wait for a table at a restaurant, and overall it all felt pretty relaxed. There are a few exceptions though, which I’ll get into down below in the things I didn’t like about Lake Tahoe.

5. Many Different Towns Around Lake Tahoe

There really are loads of different places to stay around Lake Tahoe, so there’s something for pretty much every type of traveler.

South Lake Tahoe, Truckee, Incline Village… there are loads of different little towns, and they all have their own vibe. We stayed in South Lake Tahoe, which I absolutely loved. It was super laid-back, right on the lake, and had loads of great restaurants, supermarkets, and plenty of hotel options.

What I Didn’t Like About Lake Tahoe California

1. You Pretty Much Need a Car for Everything

Since I’m born and raised in Europe, I’m just used to walkable cities and places. I love being able to walk to a coffee shop in the morning, grab some food nearby, or just explore a place on foot.

But in Lake Tahoe, we needed a car for pretty much everything because of the distances between places. Even just getting a coffee in the morning meant getting in the car and driving somewhere.

I’ve definitely gotten used to it by now after traveling around the US, but it’s still something I want to point out, especially for my international visitors who might not be expecting it.

2. The Popular Spots Can Get Really Busy

I know I mentioned earlier that Lake Tahoe didn’t feel busy, and honestly, it didn’t…well, until it did.

Popular spots like Eagle Falls and Nevada Beach were definitely much busier, and we really struggled to find parking at both. So for some of the more popular hikes and beaches, I highly recommend either coming early in the morning or later in the afternoon.

For example, one day we went to Nevada Beach around 5 PM, and it was honestly perfect. The crowds were mostly gone, but it was still warm and sunny enough to go for a swim.

3. Restaurants Are Pretty Expensive

I guess this is partly a California thing and partly because Lake Tahoe is a remote lake destination, but eating out here is definitely expensive.

It was noticeably more expensive than other places I’ve visited, which is why we ended up buying stuff for sandwiches and taking them with us on our hikes. We usually only ate out once a day for dinner, and that definitely helped us save quite a bit of money.

Lake Tahoe in Summer vs. Winter: Which Season Is Better?

I’m not sure if you know this about me, but I absolutely love a good mountain resort. I actually worked a winter season in mountain destinations like Whistler, Canada, and Saas-Fee, Switzerland, basically snowboarding almost every single day. So you would probably think I would automatically prefer Lake Tahoe in the winter.

But honestly… I don’t.

Yes, Lake Tahoe is amazing in the winter. With incredible ski resorts like Heavenly and Palisades Tahoe, it’s definitely one of the best winter destinations in California.

But after having such an amazing time here during summer, I can confidently say that I’m now team Lake Tahoe in the summer.

That being said, the two seasons honestly feel like completely different trips. The activities you do, the scenery you see, and even the overall atmosphere are totally different depending on when you visit. In the summer, you’re hiking, swimming, kayaking, and enjoying the beaches, while winter is all about skiing, snowboarding, and cozy mountain vibes.

And yes, even the prices are completely different. Winter in Lake Tahoe is much more expensive, especially when it comes to accommodation, which is probably another reason why I enjoyed summer here so much.

My Favorite Things to Do in Lake Tahoe

Hike to Eagle Falls and Eagle Lake

One of my favorite hikes in Lake Tahoe was the trail to Eagle Falls. It was not only absolutely beautiful, but also surprisingly easy, which makes it a great option for families or anyone who isn’t in the best shape.

The hike up to Eagle Falls only took us around 20 minutes, but I would highly recommend continuing on to Eagle Lake as well. The views get even better, and in my opinion, that’s the part that really makes this hike worth doing.

The only downside is parking. It can get pretty terrible here, especially during the busy summer months, so I highly recommend arriving as early as possible.

Relax at Nevada Beach

Before visiting Lake Tahoe, I had no idea there were proper sandy beaches here. I always imagined it more as a mountain lake, so seeing places like Nevada Beach was a really cool surprise.

We spent the day paddleboarding, swimming, and relaxing on the beach, and it was honestly one of my favorite experiences in Lake Tahoe. The water is definitely cold since it comes from the snow and glaciers in the surrounding mountains, but on a warm summer day, it was actually really refreshing.

Just like with Eagle Falls, I recommend arriving early or later in the afternoon because parking and crowds can become a problem during peak hours.

Go Skiing or Snowboarding in Winter

Of course, Lake Tahoe isn’t just a summer destination. It is also one of the most popular mountain destinations in California, and during the winter months, skiing and snowboarding are the main attractions.

Some of the best ski resorts around Lake Tahoe include Heavenly and Palisades Tahoe, both of which are incredible places to spend a winter day on the slopes.

Having worked winter seasons in mountain resorts myself, I can definitely see why people come back to Lake Tahoe year after year for the skiing.

Go Paddleboarding on Lake Tahoe

I’m definitely not the best at paddleboarding. I’m still very much in the learning process of confidently standing up on the board, but I still absolutely love getting out on the water and enjoying the lake.

One of my favorite things about paddleboarding in Lake Tahoe is that you can escape the crowds a little bit and enjoy the incredible scenery from the water.

One thing to know is that many rental shops are actually located in town rather than directly at the lake, so you’ll need a car to transport your paddleboard.

I rented my board from SUP Tahoe, and they were super helpful and friendly. I definitely recommend checking them out if you want to rent a paddleboard during your visit.

Go Rafting on the Truckee River

I actually haven’t done this one myself yet, but after seeing and hearing so many great things about it, rafting on the Truckee River is definitely high on my list for my next Lake Tahoe visit.

Apparently, you can rent a small raft and float down the river yourself, which sounds like such a fun summer activity. It looks like the perfect thing to do on a warm day when you want to experience a different side of the Lake Tahoe area.

FAQs About Is Lake Tahoe Worth It

Do I need a car for Lake Tahoe?

Yes, you definitely need a car. We used ours pretty much every single day to reach different trailheads, get to the hikes, drive to the supermarket, and go out for dinner. Most spots around Lake Tahoe aren’t built for walking between towns, so having a car makes exploring way easier.

How do I get to Lake Tahoe?

Driving is easily the best way to go. We drove from San Francisco, which took about 3 hours. It was a really smooth drive, and since we needed a car once we arrived anyway, driving all the way there just made sense for us.

Where should I stay at Lake Tahoe?

There are several towns scattered around the lake, but I highly recommend staying around South Lake Tahoe. Based on my own experience, it gives you the best mix of hotels, restaurants, and overall convenience.

Is Lake Tahoe expensive?

Yes and no. I actually didn’t pay as much for our hotel as I originally expected, which was a nice surprise. But at the end of the day, it’s still California, so things like eating out and local activities were definitely on the pricier side.

What is there to do in Lake Tahoe in the summer?

Summer in Lake Tahoe actually has way more to offer than the winter season. I filled my days with so many fun activities, from paddleboarding and hiking to just swimming in the crystal-clear water. You definitely won’t get bored!

Final Thoughts: Should You Visit Lake Tahoe California?

Absolutely. I honestly think Lake Tahoe might be one of the very best outdoor destinations in all of California.

Don’t get me wrong, California’s iconic national parks like Yosemite and Sequoia are unbelievable. But they often come with extra hassle: battling for strict reservation permits, dealing with crowded campsites, and sacrificing basic comforts.

What makes Lake Tahoe so special is that it gives you such a great middle ground. You get all the convenience of a proper town with great restaurants and cozy hotels, while having world-class nature right outside your door.

During my trip, I was able to relax in a great hotel, grab a great meal at night, and still be just a 10 to 30-minute drive from beaches, scenic drives, and incredible hiking trails every morning.

I hope this guide on Is Lake Tahoe worth visiting gives you a solid look into what Lake Tahoe is really like and helps you pull together your next trip!
