The 7 Best Restaurants in South Lake Tahoe: My Favorite Food Spots in 2026

I was definitely a little surprised by the food scene in South Lake Tahoe and I mean that in a very good way!

There are so many amazing restaurants, cute pubs, breweries, and bars all around town, and I honestly didn’t expect there to be such a great variety of food here.

I’m definitely a bit of a foodie, so whenever I visit a new destination, I always try to eat at as many good restaurants and local food spots as possible. That’s pretty much what I did while visiting Lake Tahoe too. I really got in there and tried a little bit of everything, from Mexican food and diners to restaurants with awesome outdoor patios and local breweries.

I know how overwhelming and honestly a little annoying it can be to find the right places to eat, especially when there are so many different options. I always end up scrolling through Google reviews, looking at hundreds of food photos, checking menus, and still wondering whether a restaurant is actually worth going to.

So, I figured it would be easier if I simply shared my favorite restaurants in South Lake Tahoe, the places I actually ate at, enjoyed, and would personally recommend.

What are the Best Restaurants in South Lake Tahoe? My Quick Answer

When I say the best restaurants in South Lake Tahoe, I’m definitely not talking about Michelin-star restaurants, fine dining, or anything like that at all. In fact, those types of restaurants aren’t really my thing.

When I say “best,” I’m literally talking about the restaurants where I had the best overall experience. Of course, the food is a huge part of that, but I also care about the atmosphere, location, service, and just how much I enjoyed being there.

Because of that, a lot of the restaurants on this list are actually much more casual. With outdoor patios, breweries, live music, burgers, pizza, Mexican food, and places where you can show up after a full day of hiking or hanging out by the lake without feeling like you need to get dressed up. That type of restaurant just fits my Lake Tahoe trips way better.

Two of my favorite restaurants, which both have a fairly similar vibe, are Elements Eatery in South Lake Tahoe and The Hangar.

Both are pretty casual, but they work a little differently. Elements Eatery is more of a proper sit-down restaurant with table service, while The Hangar has a walk-up bar and food trucks. However, both have really nice outdoor seating areas, often have live music, and are perfect if you’re looking for Mexican food, burgers, pizza, or other casual comfort food.

So, if you asked me for a good spot for lunch or dinner in South Lake Tahoe, those would probably be the first two places I’d recommend.

1. Elements Eatery & Bar (My Favorite Restaurant in Lake Tahoe + Outdoor Patio)

My favorite restaurant I went to in South Lake Tahoe was definitely Elements Eatery & Bar. We actually liked it so much that we ended up going there twice, once for lunch and then again for dinner.

It’s located right in the town center, has its own parking lot, and both times we visited we had no issues finding a spot, which for sure is a nice bonus here in Lake Tahoe.

Both times we sat outside on their patio where they had live music playing, so I actually don’t even know what the inside looks like.

But honestly, that outdoor area is exactly where I wanted to be anyway. After spending the day hiking or being outside around the lake, sitting on a patio with good food, drinks, and live music just fits my idea of Lake Tahoe perfectly.

The food here was really good too. We had their burritos and taco salads, and their chips and guacamole were also really tasty. They also have some great happy hour deals on beers, which is always a win in my book.

Overall, this was probably the restaurant that gave me the best combination of food, atmosphere, and just a really enjoyable evening. I’d definitely come back here again.

2. The Idle Hour Lake Tahoe (Best Waterfront Restaurant in South Lake Tahoe)

In my opinion, the best waterfront restaurant in South Lake Tahoe is The Idle Hour.

We came here one evening just before sunset, and we got super lucky because we managed to get a table right by the water. They have a really cool little deck that sits directly on the lake, so the views here are honestly amazing.

I’d say The Idle Hour is probably more of a wine bar with food rather than a full restaurant, but we still had a great experience. We tried some of their wines and also ordered their charcuterie board with different meats and cheeses, which I really enjoyed.

I did see some other guests ordering their pinsa bread, which are basically little flatbreads that are kind of similar to pizzas, and they looked really good too.

However, I probably wouldn’t come here if you’re absolutely starving after a full day of hiking. This is more of a place where you come for the views, drinks, and a relaxed evening by the lake.

3. The Hangar Taproom (The Best Dog-Friendly Restaurant in South Lake Tahoe)

Another one of my favorite places in South Lake Tahoe was The Hangar Taproom.

The Hangar Taproom is located a little outside of the main town center, but honestly, I really liked that about it. It has a lot more space, and it’s surrounded by huge pine trees, which gives it a really nice outdoor Tahoe feel.

The actual building where the bar is located is pretty small, but then outside they have a huge seating area with different food trucks, which I thought was awesome. It was just super casual which sometimes is just great, especially when I’m still wearing my hiking clothes or lake outfit.

When we were there, we tried their burgers, and they were really yummy so I highly recommend them. I know they also have other options like pizzas and tacos as well, so there’s definitely something for everyone.

What I liked most about The Hangar is that it’s just very low-key. It’s not trying to be fancy or anything, it’s just a really relaxed place to spend an afternoon or evening. It’s also one of the best dog-friendly restaurants in South Lake Tahoe, so if you’re traveling with your furry friend, this is definitely a great option.

One thing I do want to mention though: the first time we tried to go to The Hangar, they actually had a ticketed live music event happening. They have a proper stage there, so sometimes they host bigger events instead of regular service.

So before you go, I’d quickly check their website or social media to make sure they’re open as normal and don’t have a special event going on.

4. South Lake Brewing Co.

I probably love a good brewery just as much as the next person, and South Lake Brewing Co. was a really great spot we came to for lunch one day.

We actually came here after hiking to Eagle Lake and Eagle Falls in Desolation Wilderness that morning, which honestly made it the perfect place to stop afterward.

It wasn’t super busy when we were there, which actually surprised me a little bit. However, it is located in Base Camp right by the gondola, and I visited during summer. I imagine in winter this place gets much busier with skiers coming off the mountain.

I also noticed they have fireplaces and heaters on their outdoor patio, so I can totally see this being a really cozy winter spot as well.

For food, we tried a few different things, including their chicken tenders, chicken sandwich, and pretzel, plus two of their house lagers. I was honestly really happy with everything we ordered.

If you like a good brewery with solid food, relaxed vibes, and a place where you can grab a beer after being outdoors all day, I’d definitely recommend checking out South Lake Brewing Co.

5. Bert’s Cafe (Best Breakfast in South Lake Tahoe)

Before I came to Lake Tahoe, I hadn’t had a proper American diner breakfast in years and years, so when I saw that Bert’s Cafe was a popular and well-rated diner, I knew I had to check it out.

We actually went there on our way out of Lake Tahoe, so it was the morning we were leaving. Since it’s located in Tahoe Valley, it worked out perfectly for us. 

We arrived around 9:30am, and it was already super busy. We had to wait around 30 minutes for a table and ended up sitting at the bar, so definitely prepare for a wait, especially if you’re visiting with a bigger group.

But honestly, I’m telling you right now,it’s worth it!!

The atmosphere here is awesome. It’s a super authentic, old-school American diner with a classic cozy feeling you imagine when you think of a proper diner breakfast. We had unlimited coffee refills, tap water, and the staff were also super friendly.

The food here was just so so so good. We both got the breakfast combo with biscuits and gravy, fried eggs, bacon, and sausage, as well as a side of hash browns. You could have literally rolled me out of there afterward because I was so full, but it was absolutely delicious. 

If you’re visiting Lake Tahoe from outside the US, I’d especially recommend coming here. It’s not just breakfast, it’s a proper local American experience, and definitely something worth trying.

6. MacDuff’s Pub

In my life, I’ve spent quite a bit of time in the UK and Australia, so naturally I do love a good pub.

And by a good pub, I mean proper beer (ideally Guinness) and classic pub food like cottage pie, bread pudding, fish and chips, and all those comforting dishes I expect from a traditional pub.

I know the US doesn’t really have many places like that, which makes sense, so I was actually pretty surprised when I found MacDuff’s Pub here in Lake Tahoe.

I wouldn’t say it’s exactly like walking into a traditional pub in the UK, but it definitely has that cozy pub feeling. The food was really good, the atmosphere was great, and overall I had a really enjoyable experience here.

So if you’re looking for somewhere with more of a pub vibe in South Lake Tahoe, I think MacDuff’s Pub is definitely worth checking out.

7. Coldwater Brewery

And last but not least on my list is Coldwater Brewery.

We came here on our very first night in Lake Tahoe because it was literally only about a four-minute walk from our hotel and had fantastic reviews, so we decided to just walk over and check it out.

I think this is a great casual spot, especially if you want somewhere to watch sports. They have TVs inside, but we decided to sit outside on their patio instead, which was a really nice way to spend our first evening.

We didn’t get anything too fancy here. We ordered their loaded nachos and their chicken wings with ranch and blue cheese dip, and wow, those wings were really good.

For drinks, I went with their Mexican lager, which has kind of become my go-to beer on hot days in California because it’s so light, refreshing, and easy to drink.

All in all, I had a great time in Lake Tahoe trying different restaurants and eating my way around town.

I will say that the food here is mostly typical American food like burgers, pizza, pub food, California-Mexican food, breweries, and casual comfort food. 

There isn’t necessarily a huge variety of international cuisine, and a lot of the restaurants on this list have fairly similar types of food.

But to be fair, that was kinda fine with me. I didn’t expect, need, or even really want Lake Tahoe to be some massive international food destination. After spending the day hiking, swimming, or hanging out by the lake, a good burger, pizza, tacos, or a cold beer on an outdoor patio was pretty much exactly what I wanted.

So whether you’re looking for a waterfront wine bar, a casual brewery, a dog-friendly outdoor restaurant, a classic American diner, or somewhere to grab food after a day of hiking, I think you’ll find a place on this list that fits what you’re looking for.

I genuinely enjoyed every restaurant I included here and would honestly recommend all of them.
