Is Alcatraz Worth Visiting? My Honest Review & Experience in 2026
Visiting Alcatraz was one of the things I was most excited about during our trip to San Francisco. It’s probably one of the most iconic sights in the entire city, and it had been on my bucket list for quite some time.
We finally made it over there, took the ferry across the bay and explored the former prison, and I have to say, it was a really cool experience. In fact, this was actually my second visit to Alcatraz, so I already had a pretty good idea of what to expect.
But is Alcatraz worth visiting, or is it really just one of those tourist attractions you can skip?
In this guide, I’ll share my experience from both visits, what I liked, what I didn’t like quite as much, and everything I’d want to know before visiting Alcatraz for the first time.

Is Alcatraz Worth Visiting? My Quick Answer
Yes, 100%. I absolutely think Alcatraz is worth visiting, even if you’re not particularly interested in history.
I’m not necessarily a huge history buff myself, but whenever I travel, I love learning a little more about a place’s history and culture. And Alcatraz was genuinely fascinating for that. I learned so much about the prison’s history, its infamous inmates like Al Capone, and even the occupation of the island by Indigenous activists in 1969.
And beyond the history, it’s just a really cool experience being there in person. The ferry ride from Pier 33 across the bay is worth it alone, with some amazing views of the San Francisco skyline and, theoretically, the Golden Gate Bridge. Unfortunately, we got a little unlucky with the weather, and the bridge was completely covered in fog when we visited. Classic San Francisco!
Exploring the island and the former prison itself was also super straightforward. Your ticket includes an audio tour that guides you through the prison, explaining its history and pointing out all the interesting details along the way. You can follow it at your own pace, so you’re not just wandering around wondering what you’re supposed to look at.
All in all, I had a fantastic experience, and I’d absolutely recommend adding Alcatraz to your San Francisco itinerary. Whether you’re into history or just want to experience one of the city’s most iconic sights, I think it’s well worth your time.

Quick Facts About Visiting Alcatraz
1. How to Visit Alcatraz
First things first, make sure you buy your tickets directly from Alcatraz City Cruises, which is the official ticket provider for Alcatraz. The ferries depart daily from Pier 33 in San Francisco, and you can check the departure times and exact location on their website.
2. Ticket Prices
The only way to visit Alcatraz is by ferry, and a standard return ticket from Pier 33 costs $47.95 per person. This includes the ferry ride and the audio tour on the island.
If you’d rather do something a little different, there’s also a Night Tour for $59.65, which I’ve heard is a really cool experience. I’d definitely consider that if you’re looking for something a little more special.
3. Book Your Tickets in Advance
You can book Alcatraz tickets up to 90 days in advance, and depending on the time of year, they can sell out pretty quickly.
However, we actually booked ours just one day in advance, and it wasn’t an issue at all. We visited during a quieter period, though, so I wouldn’t necessarily count on being as lucky as we were during peak season.
4. Stay Near Fisherman’s Wharf
If you’re planning to visit Alcatraz, I’d recommend staying somewhere around Fisherman’s Wharf or the Marina District. That way, you can easily walk to Pier 33 from your hotel.
The Argonaut Hotel is perfect for this, as it’s right by Fisherman’s Wharf and close to the ferry departure point. We stayed at Cow Hollow Inn instead and walked down along the ocean to Pier 33, which was also a really nice way to start the day.
5. Learn About Alcatraz’s Famous Inmates
You’ll learn so much about the inmates and the famous escape attempts during your visit. Some of the names you’ve probably already heard of include Al Capone and Machine Gun Kelly.
6. Pack Accordingly!
Even if it’s sunny and warm in San Francisco, trust me when I say that the ferry ride and the island can get CRAZY windy and cold. I was so cold on the ferry and it was so windy we had to go inside because we just couldn’t hack it on the upper deck.
You might not expect it when you’re standing on the mainland enjoying the sunshine, but conditions out on the water can feel completely different.
So please, bring at least a light jacket or windbreaker. You’ll thank me later!

What I Loved About Visiting Alcatraz
Learning About the History
Of course, the biggest reason I wanted to visit Alcatraz was the history. It’s such a unique way to learn about San Francisco’s past, the island itself and what life was actually like inside one of America’s most infamous prisons.
We learned how and why the prison was built, who some of its most famous inmates were, and all the stories behind the attempted escapes. Getting to learn about all of this while actually walking through the former prison definitely was a pretty cool and unique experience.
The Ferry Ride
I also thought that the ferry ride itself was actually pretty awesome. We made sure to be on the upper deck, we got lucky and got some good seats there too, and being out on the water was just fun.
We had some realyl great views of the San Francisco skyline along the way, and you can also see the Golden Gate Bridge in the distance when the weather cooperates. Unfortunately, we got a little unlucky with the fog during our visit, but even so, I thought the ferry ride was a highlight in itself.
The Audio Guide Is Fantastic
The audio guide, which is included with your ticket, was another thing I really liked. It takes you through the entire prison, explaining the history and pointing out all the interesting details along the way.
And it’s not just a bunch of random historical facts either. You hear individual stories from former inmates, learn about the famous escape attempts and even get some insight into the 1969 occupation of Alcatraz by Indigenous activists.
What I particularly liked was that you can follow the tour at your own pace. You can stop whenever something catches your attention, listen to the stories and spend as much time as you want exploring each part of the prison.

What I Didn’t Like About Alcatraz
It Can Get Busy
Even though there’s a limited number of tickets available each day, Alcatraz can still get pretty busy, which we definitely noticed during our visit.
There was a fairly long line when we arrived at the ferry terminal, and things got a little crowded once we were on the island too. We had to wait a bit to pick up our audio guides, and some of the rooms inside the prison got backed up as everyone was making their way through the tour.
I wouldn’t say it ruined the experience, but it did make certain parts feel a little less relaxed than I would’ve liked.
If you want to avoid some of the crowds, I’d recommend booking either the first departure of the day, around 8 AM, or a later afternoon departure.
The Weather Can Make a Huge Difference
Even though a large part of the Alcatraz tour takes place inside the prison, the weather can make a surprisingly big difference to your experience.
We had to bundle up during our visit because it was SO windy and cold on the ferry and out on the island. We actually ended up going inside the ferry because it was just too windy to stay on the upper deck.
And remember, quite a few parts of Alcatraz are outdoors, so if it’s raining, you’ll likely get wet at some point during your visit too.
So even if it’s sunny and relatively warm when you leave San Francisco, I’d still bring a jacket or windbreaker. Trust me, you’ll be glad you did!

Alternatives to Visiting Alcatraz Day Tour
1. Take the Alcatraz Night Tour
A really cool alternative to the regular daytime visit is the Alcatraz Night Tour. I haven’t done this one myself, so I can’t speak from personal experience, but I’ve heard some fantastic things about it.
It’s not a scary or specifically spooky tour. It’s essentially the same island and prison experience, just later in the day, when there are fewer visitors around. You also get some additional guided-tour elements alongside the usual audio guide, and depending on the tour, you may get access to areas that aren’t normally part of the standard daytime visit.
That being said, I can imagine the whole atmosphere of wandering through an old prison after dark being a little spooky by default. Even if you’re not usually into that kind of thing, I think it could be a really cool way to experience Alcatraz.

2. Take a Bay Cruise Around Alcatraz
Another option is to take a San Francisco Bay cruise that sails around Alcatraz. This is particularly worth considering if you’re short on time or don’t necessarily want to spend a few hours exploring the prison itself.
There are quite a few cruises that take you around Alcatraz and past the Golden Gate Bridge, giving you a great view of the island and the former prison from the water.
Obviously, you won’t get to step inside the prison or experience the audio tour, but you still get to see Alcatraz up close while enjoying a boat ride around the bay. If you’re mainly interested in seeing the island and getting some great views of San Francisco from the water, this is a really nice alternative.
