How Many Days in Santa Barbara Do You Need? My Quick Answer

So I personally spent 4 full days here in Santa Barbara and I thought it was a good amount of time, but it was also definitely not necessary.

I spent a lot of time exploring the center of Santa Barbara, went to the Funk Zone where all the amazing wine bars, breweries and restaurants are, went to the beach, saw the famous County Courthouse and did plenty of shopping on State Street Promenade.

I had a really fantastic time here, but I also could have done all of that in two full days, which is why I think Santa Barbara is just perfect for a weekend visit. If you arrive here Friday night and leave late Sunday or Monday morning, you’ll have a great time, I promise.

Why I Stayed Longer and What I Did With My Time

So why did I stay for 4 days then? Well, there is definitely more to do around Santa Barbara too, so we used those extra days to explore a little further out.

We took a day trip to nearby Ojai, which is such a cute little town, and we also visited a couple of the amazing wineries around Santa Barbara. So basically, we spent two full days just walking around Santa Barbara because it’s so beautifully walkable, and then used the other two days to get in the car and explore places a little further out.

What Is There to Do in Santa Barbara California?

Food & Drinks in the Funk Zone

Almost every day I would end up in the Funk Zone at some point, either for coffee and breakfast at one of the cute coffee shops or later in the day when I wanted to go to a wine bar or have a beer on a patio.

The Funk Zone is a super cool area in Santa Barbara, not too far from the beach. It’s fairly small, but there is a lot going on with some really cool wine bars, breweries, restaurants and cafes. It was definitely my favorite place to go out, especially in the evenings.

Visit the County Courthouse in Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara has a really stunning and iconic courthouse, and I absolutely loved it. It’s a masterpiece of Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, which by the way is my favorite type of architecture. If I ever buy a house and settle down, this is exactly what I want it to look like.

It has whitewashed walls, a red roof, palm trees and beautiful gardens all around it, and there is even a bell tower you can walk up to for some awesome views over Santa Barbara.

Shopping on State Street Promenade

Pedestrian zones, unlike in Europe, are not super common here in the USA, so you can imagine how excited I was when I realized that pretty much all of State Street is blocked off to cars.

I spent hours just walking up and down the street, popping into boutiques and shops, grabbing lunch and just enjoying the whole area. I also bought quite a few souvenirs here for my family, so if you’re looking for some fun California stuff to take home, this is definitely a good place to do it.

Visit the Mission Santa Barbara

Another iconic landmark in Santa Barbara is for sure the Old Mission Santa Barbara. In case you don’t know what the missions are in California, they were basically religious and strategic outposts built by the Spanish during their colonization of California.

There are 21 Spanish missions across California, and they’re often really beautiful buildings that you can visit and tour while learning more about the history of the area. So if you’re interested in the history of California, I definitely think the Mission Santa Barbara is worth checking out.

A Weekend in Santa Barbara: How to Spend 2–3 Days Here

If I only had a weekend here in Santa Barbara, so let’s say I’m arriving Friday night and leaving either Sunday night or Monday morning, then first things first, I’d make sure to stay somewhere central. That way, I basically wouldn’t need my car at all for the entire weekend, and I personally love a good walkable city.

We stayed at The Franciscan Hotel, but the Eagle Inn and Santa Barbara Inn are also great options if you want to be close to everything.

From those hotels, I could pretty much fill my two full days just walking or cycling around Santa Barbara. A lot of hotels even offer free bike rentals, which makes getting around even easier.

I’d definitely make sure to hit some of the amazing coffee shops and cafes like Dart Coffee, check out wine bars like Pali Wine Co., and grab a beer at places like Topa Topa Brewing Co. I could walk up to the County Courthouse, go shopping on State Street, and spend a whole day at the beach if I wanted to.

Basically, I’d just pack my weekend with food, wine, beer, shopping, beach time and a little bit of sightseeing. That’s honestly all you need for a fantastic weekend in Santa Barbara.

I also have plenty of other Santa Barbara guides where I go much more into detail about the best things to do, restaurants, coffee shops and more, so definitely check those out if you’re planning your trip.

Day Trips from Santa Barbara: How to Spend 4 or More Days Here

This is basically exactly what I did when I was in Santa Barbara. I spent 4 full days here, so I used two full days to explore the center and beaches around Santa Barbara, especially State Street and the Funk Zone, and then used the other two days to get out and explore the surrounding area.

There is actually a lot to do around Santa Barbara, so for this I highly recommend having a car. We always rent ours through Kayak.com, which makes getting around the surrounding area pretty easy.

We did a day trip from Santa Barbara to Ojai, which is such a cute little town with awesome restaurants, good cafes, quirky flea markets, boutique shops and the super cool outdoor library called Bart’s Books.

We also took a day trip into wine country, and there are honestly so many amazing wineries around here. We visited Sunstone Winery, which was gorgeous, but Vega Vineyard and Farm is another one worth checking out.

And those are just a few options. If you have more time, you could also visit San Luis Obispo (SLO), Pismo Beach, Ostrichland USA, or explore even more wineries in the Edna Valley.

So if you have 4 or more days in Santa Barbara, I’d definitely use some of that extra time to get out of the city and see what else is around here.

Where to Stay in Santa Barbara for a Weekend

I did mention it briefly earlier already, but I really do love it when I stay somewhere and don’t even have to touch my car. Being able to literally walk everywhere I need to be makes a weekend so much more enjoyable, and Santa Barbara can definitely be that as long as you make sure your hotel is in the right location.

When I’m looking for a hotel, I usually use Booking.com and then make sure wherever I stay is close to the beach, the Funk Zone and the State Street Promenade. That’s basically all I need for a weekend here.

I ended up booking the Franciscan Hotel because it was the best deal and best value for money at the time. However, if you want something a little more elevated, maybe because you’re doing a romantic weekend trip, then the Eagle Inn and Santa Barbara Inn are also two great options, and all of them are within walking distance of the beach, restaurants and shops.
