The 7 Best Restaurants in Santa Barbara California: My Favorite Foodie Spots in 2026

I always say that one of the major things to do in Santa Barbara is check out the amazing food scene, and honestly, trying different restaurants and food spots was basically my number one activity while I was here. 

I just got back from a 4-day visit to Santa Barbara, and I tried quite a few different places, from super chill and low-key food spots to more elevated restaurants, bakeries, and everything in between.

I know finding a place for lunch or dinner can be super overwhelming, especially when you have so many different options packed into such a small city. And yep, Santa Barbara really does have a crazy dense collection of awesome restaurants, which is exactly why I wanted to put together this little guide.

So, if you’re trying to figure out where to eat in Santa Barbara tonight, here is my guide on the best restaurants in Santa Barbara, to make that decision a little easier.

What Are the Best Restaurants in Santa Barbara? I’ve Got The Answers

Before I get into all the places where I ate in Santa Barbara, I want to quickly say that I’m obviously no food critic. I also don’t really care about Michelin-star restaurants, fine dining, or anything like that. 

In this guide, I’m basically recommending the restaurants that I personally tried and really enjoyed, and that I think the average person visiting Santa Barbara would also love. It’s mostly just genuinely good food in places I actually enjoyed eating at, if that makes sense.

Since we’re in California, I obviously couldn’t get through this list without including a bunch of Mexican food, with East Beach Tacos being my personal favorite. There are plenty of other popular restaurants, like Mony’s Mexican Food, which is also awesome. 

But I also have my favorite burger in Santa Barbara on this list, which I had at Third Window Brewing, an awesome Brewery for afternoon beers, burgers, and patio time.

I even decided to include my favorite bagel shop and a bakery, so this is really more of a “my favorite foods and places to eat in Santa Barbara” guide rather than a traditional restaurant guide. And honestly, I think that’s probably more useful anyway.

So, if you’re looking for some genuinely good places to eat during your trip, I highly recommend checking out a few of these spots. I really enjoyed them, and I hope you do too!

1. East Beach Tacos // My Favorite Tacos in Santa Barbara

There are a bunch of incredible taco restaurants in Santa Barbara. Lilly’s Taqueria, Mony’s Mexican Food, and plenty of others are all fantastic, but my personal favorite is East Beach Tacos.

I know they’re not exactly traditional tacos. They’re definitely more of a California-style taco, but I absolutely loved them. I had the barbacoa tacos, which were really good, but the fish taco was the highlight for me. Seriously, if you come here, you have to order it!

We also got the chips and guacamole, which were super fresh and delicious.

The location itself couldn’t be more low-key. It’s basically a little hole-in-the-wall spot with a few picnic tables outside, which I actually really liked. But the funny thing is, they also have batting cages right there, so obviously I had to give it a shot while we were waiting for our food.

Bare in mind, I have never played baseball in my life, so I was absolutely terrible. But 25 swings only cost $4, so it was kind of a no-brainer.

2. Brophy Bros. Santa Barbara

You know how in many cities there’s usually that one iconic restaurant that everyone seems to tell you that you have to go there? Well, in Santa Barbara, I’d say that place is Brophy Bros.

I had so many friends recommend this place to me before I even visited, so obviously I had to check it out. And I’m really glad I did.

Brophy Bros. is a super charming, old-school seafood restaurant right by the harbor in Santa Barbara, and it probably had some of the best seafood I ate during my time in California. We came here for lunch and sat on their upstairs terrace, which was a pretty great place to enjoy the whole harbor atmosphere.

I ordered some oysters, which were incredibly fresh, and then went with the fish and chips. The fish was perfectly cooked, the whole thing was crispy and satisfying.

I really wanted to try their clam chowder as well, but by this point I’d already had clam chowder several times during our California trip, so I figured I should probably try something different.

Either way, if you’re looking for good seafood in Santa Barbara, Brophy Bros. is definitely one I’d recommend. And if you can get a table upstairs on the terrace, even better.

3. Mother Dough Bagels (My Favorite Bagel Shop in SB)

I know, I know, New York has the best bagels. You might think that’s obviously true, and sure, I guess it probably is. But that doesn’t mean the bagels here at Mother Dough Bagels aren’t incredible.

We came here for our very first morning and brunch in Santa Barbara because I’d heard so many awesome things about it, and it was so good. It was pretty busy when we arrived, so I’d recommend giving yourself some time, but we managed to get a table eventually.

They make all their bagels fresh in-house, right then and there, and they have everything from your classic bagel with cream cheese to some more creative combinations.

We ordered the classic lox with salmon and cream cheese on an everything bagel, but then we also went a little crazy and got the gochujang cream cheese on a cheese and jalapeño bagel, and it was awesome. It wasn’t spicy at all, but the flavor was just so good. I’d highly recommend trying it!

4. Third Window Brewing (My Top Smash Burger in Santa Barbara)

While I was in Santa Barbara, I kind of made it my mission to try as many breweries and wine bars as I could, and I’d say I did a fairly good job. 

One of my favorite breweries I went to was Third Window Brewing, which is pretty much the perfect brewery for me. They have an awesome patio that’s made for summertime beers, blue skies, and hanging out outside, and their beers are great too.

But surprisingly, and I feel like that’s not always the case with breweries, their food was really good as well. Specifically, their smash burger was one of the best smash burgers I’ve had in a while. If you’re a burger fan, this one is definitely worth checking out!

5. Helena Avenue Bakery

I do have a whole other guide with the best cafes in Santa Barbara, which you should definitely check out, but if you’re looking for a sweet or savory treat, you absolutely have to check out Helena Avenue Bakery.

I wish I could’ve come here multiple times because there were so many things on the menu that I wanted to try. Ultimately, though, I went with their Southern fried chicken sandwich, and it was just so good.

But honestly, all of their pastries looked incredible too. From scones and croissants to chocolate chip cookies, there was so much that I wanted to try, and I definitely could’ve eaten my way through half the menu.

So I’m promising myself right now, as I’m writing this: I’ll come back to Santa Barbara, and I’m definitely going back to Helena Avenue Bakery!!!

6. Happy Cat Eats

Happy Cat Eats was kind of a more random find for me. I didn’t do any research beforehand, and nobody recommended it to me either. It’s just located right by the beach, I was hungry, I walked past it, and it was busy, so I figured I’d get a quick bite here.

The place itself is pretty much a little hole in the wall with some seating, but being right by the ocean is pretty hard to beat.

I ordered their Cali burrito, which, in my head, meant a burrito with French fries in it. That’s what I’m used to when I hear “Cali burrito,” so I was kind of surprised when I got a burrito filled with carnitas and mac and cheese instead.

And hold on, guys, this was insane. I was genuinely obsessed with it. It sounds like a combination that absolutely shouldn’t work, but somehow it just did. The carnitas, the mac and cheese, the whole thing together was just ridiculously delicious.

10/10 for the Cali burrito. I’d absolutely order it again.

7. Lucky Penny (My Favorite Pizza in Santa Barbara)

And lastly, we have my very favorite actual sit-down restaurant on this list, and easily some of the best food I had anywhere in California: Lucky Penny.

Lucky Penny is a proper Italian restaurant, and I honestly don’t even know where to start. The restaurant itself and the outdoor seating area are both phenomenal, and the food was just incredible.

Their pizzas were for sure the best pizza I had during my California trip, and their meatballs were also so damn good.

It’s not a fancy place at all, though. It’s still super chill, which is something I really like about a lot of the restaurants in the Funk Zone. But if I’m coming here, I’m coming for a pizza, a glass of wine, maybe a cold beer, and just a proper comfort-food experience, if you know what I mean.

Honestly, this is probably the restaurant on this entire list that I’d be most excited to go back to.

Places I Want To Try The Next Time

There are still a few restaurants in Santa Barbara that either friends recommended to me or that I came across on Instagram and thought looked awesome. Unfortunately, I just didn’t have enough time to get to all of them during this trip.

But maybe you’ll have the time, and if you do, you should totally check them out and let me know if they were worth it!

Secret Bao

My friend recommended Secret Bao to me, which is a modern Asian restaurant focusing mainly on Chinese and Japanese food, and I love bao buns, so it sounds right up my alley.

Bao buns are definitely one of their main things, but they also have all kinds of other creations. They have kimbap, which is Korean, and even udon carbonara.

I actually had the viral udon carbonara in Tokyo, and it was terrible, so I’m very curious to see if this one is any better. 

Boathouse

The Boathouse is supposedly another iconic seafood restaurant in Santa Barbara, and I was actually kind of torn between going here and Brophy Bros. Ultimately, I went with Brophy Bros. because it was closer to my hotel.

The Boathouse seems a little more upscale, and it’s right by the ocean, which obviously sounds pretty awesome. I didn’t get around to trying it this time, but I can’t wait to come back on a nice sunny day and give it a try.

Bettina

And lastly, I’ve seen Bettina on Instagram a bunch of times, and it looks incredible. It’s an Italian restaurant with pizza, pasta, garlic bread, and the whole shebang.

The only Italian food I had in Santa Barbara this time was at Lucky Penny, so I’m definitely excited to try another Italian restaurant and see how the two compare.

Where has the best Mexican food in Santa Barbara?

In my opinion, East Beach Tacos has the best tacos in Santa Barbara. However, they’re definitely more California-style tacos rather than authentic Mexican tacos. So, if you’re looking for something more traditional, I’d recommend checking out Mony’s Mexican Food instead.

Is Santa Barbara expensive to visit?

I’ll be honest and say yes. From my own experience, Santa Barbara was more expensive than many other destinations in California that I’ve visited, especially when it comes to hotel prices.

Where should I stay in Santa Barbara?

I always recommend staying somewhere central in Santa Barbara, ideally close to the beach, State Street, and the Funk Zone. We stayed at the Franciscan Hotel, which was perfect for exploring the city and getting around easily.

What is the best brewery in Santa Barbara?

I’ve tried quite a few, and I personally love Third Window Brewing, especially for their smash burger. But Topa Topa Brewing Co. in the Funk Zone is also one of my favorites.

What is a must-eat in Santa Barbara?

I know this isn’t technically something you eat, but I really think you should go to a wine bar in Santa Barbara. Especially in the Funk Zone, there are so many good ones. There’s even the Urban Wine Trail, which is basically wine-bar hopping around Santa Barbara.

Final Thoughts on the Best Food in Santa Barbara

All in all, there is a huge amount of good food in Santa Barbara. And I know the places I’ve mentioned here aren’t necessarily the most polished or popular restaurants in the city, but I really enjoyed them, and I’m sure you will too.

However, if you have absolutely no clue where to go and don’t want to spend an hour trying to make a decision, I can honestly just recommend going to the Funk Zone and making your own experience. That was probably my favorite part of Santa Barbara. There are so many cool wine bars, breweries, cafes, and restaurants all within a relatively small area, and I had such a great time just walking around and seeing what looked good.
