The 7 Best Cafes in Santa Barbara CA: My Favorite Coffee Shops in 2026

As you might already know, I’m a huge coffee lover. Some might even say I’m a little overly obsessed with having a good cup of coffee, and I also genuinely enjoy putting in the effort to try different cafes and coffee shops to find that said cup of coffee.

Luckily for me, Santa Barbara has an incredible cafe scene. Honestly, I think it’s much better than most places in California I’ve visited, especially considering how many high-quality cafes and coffee shops you can find in a relatively small city.

I just got back from a 4-day visit to Santa Barbara, so naturally, I made it my mission once again to try as many cool breakfast spots, coffee shops, and cafes as I could. That way, I can give you my personal recommendations for the best coffee shops and cafes in Santa Barbara.

So, if you’re anything like me and a good cup of coffee is an important part of your day, let’s get into it!

What Are The Best Cafes in Santa Barbara? I’ve Got The Answers

I wasn’t in Santa Barbara for a super long time, but I still managed to try quite a few different cafes while I was here. Usually, I’d find a cafe for coffee and breakfast earlier in the morning, and then sometime after lunch, I’d try another coffee shop for a coffee, matcha, or pastry. 

I’ve been traveling around the USA for quite some time now, and the difference between states, cities, rural areas, and more built-up places when it comes to the availability of good coffee is huge.

But I have to say, based purely on my own experience, Santa Barbara has one of the best coffee shop scenes I’ve come across in California. I had so many genuinely great specialty coffees here, and what I really loved was how many good cafes were packed into a relatively small area.

The two places I want to mention right away are Dart Coffee in the Funk Zone and Mother Dough Bagels. Dart Coffee makes an amazing latte or cappuccino, and they also have a really cool outdoor seating area that’s perfect for a slow morning coffee. Mother Dough, on the other hand, has great coffee, really good matcha, and what I think are some of the best bagels in town. I highly recommend the gochujang cream cheese bagel!

I also want to quickly mention that I’m definitely a specialty coffee guy. A flat white or cappuccino is usually my go-to, and every now and then I’ll order a V60. So, that’s obviously what a lot of my opinions in this guide are based on. If your ideal coffee is a cold foam, cinnamon-sugar-swirl iced latte with approximately 17 different ingredients on top, then hey, you might have a very different opinion than me. 

1. Dart Coffee (This is My Favorite Cafe in SB)

This guide isn’t necessarily a ranking, but Dart Coffee in the Funk Zone is definitely my favorite coffee shop in Santa Barbara. There’s also another location down by the harbor, but I didn’t get a chance to try that one.

I actually came here on two different mornings because I liked it so much. For a start, I just love the area it’s in. The Funk Zone is such a cool part of Santa Barbara, and Dart Coffee fits into it perfectly. I also really loved the overall aesthetic of the coffee shop, especially the huge outdoor seating area. On a warm summer morning, it’s the perfect place to sit down, have a good coffee, and just chill for a while.

We ordered two cappuccinos here, which were probably some of the best cappuccinos I had in Santa Barbara. But then we also tried their berry-stuffed donut, and holy crap, that thing was so good!

Dart Coffee is also definitely one of the more popular coffee shops in Santa Barbara. I never had to wait in line for very long, but it was always busy when I was there. There were loads of younger people, quite a few people working on their laptops, and just an overall really cool, relaxed vibe.

2. Cajé Coffee Roasters // Best Breakfast in Santa Barbara

Wow, Cajé Coffee Roasters is definitely one of the best spots in Santa Barbara for pretty much everything. Breakfast, coffee, pastries, whatever you’re looking for, they absolutely nailed it.

I only came here once, right after visiting the Santa Barbara County Courthouse, which you absolutely have to do while you’re here, by the way. I was starving afterward, and Cajé ended up being the perfect stop.

For a start, the Arlington location I visited is in a really cool spot, and I loved the outdoor seating area where we sat. We ordered cappuccinos again, and they were literally perfection. We also got their almond croissant, which was warm, flaky, and just delicious.

I also tried one of their flatbreads with avocado smash and tomatoes, and that was great too. They have bagels and plenty of other breakfast options as well, but honestly, everything I tried here was delicious.

So if you’re looking for somewhere in Santa Barbara where you can get really good coffee and a proper breakfast at the same time, Cajé is definitely one I’d recommend.

3. Mother Dough Bagel // My Favorite Bagels in SB

Before you get started, I know what you’re going to say: New York has the best bagels, blah blah blah. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t good bagels anywhere else in the world, and I’m telling you, the bagels here are crazy good.

We came here on our very first morning in Santa Barbara because we had heard so many amazing things about it. It was pretty busy when we arrived, so I had to wait in line for about 15 minutes, but we got a table outside afterward, so all good.

For drinks, we had a cortado and a matcha latte. Both were really good, not quite as good as some of the specialty coffee spots higher up on my list, but honestly, more than good enough. However, I’m mostly here for the bagels anyway.

I had a classic lox bagel with salmon, cream cheese, and capers on an everything bagel, which was great. But then I also went a little crazy and ordered the gochujang cream cheese on a cheese and jalapeño bagel, and holy crap, it was incredible.

It wasn’t too spicy at all, but that gochujang cream cheese was just so damn good. I’ve honestly never had anything quite like it at another bagel shop before, and it ended up being one of my favorite things I ate in Santa Barbara.

4. Handlebar Coffee Roasters

Handlebar Coffee Roasters is my recommendation if you need a good coffee spot after visiting Old Mission Santa Barbara. Since it’s a little further out from the main downtown area, it’s super close to the mission and makes for a perfect place to stop for a coffee afterward.

I only came here once and didn’t try any of their food, I just had a coffee, but I really liked the space. It reminded me a lot of the coffee shops you find in Melbourne Australia, with a big warehouse-style space and their roasting operation right there inside the building. It’s a really cool location.

And of course, the coffee itself was awesome. I definitely recommend stopping by if you’re in the area.

It’s also a fairly large location, so I imagine you won’t have to stress too much about finding a table. Everything is indoors and, most importantly, air-conditioned, which I of course love. 

5. Dune Coffee Roasters // My Top Coffee Shop Here

Dune Coffee Roasters is for sure one of the most Santa Barbara-type coffee shops on this list. It’s a little quirky, has a cool vibe, and they really focus on what they do best: coffee. They roast and sell their own beans, and they have a few pastries and small food options, but honestly, coffee is clearly the main focus here.

And they absolutely smashed it. For specialty coffee in Santa Barbara, Dune has to be one of the best places on my list.

You know, sometimes when I just want a coffee, I’d much rather go somewhere like Dune. It’s just easier and more convenient to get a really good coffee when that’s what the entire place is focused on. I don’t want to wait around at a proper sit-down breakfast restaurant when all I want is a cappuccino and maybe 20 minutes to myself.

6. Live Oak Cafe

Live Oak Cafe is fantastic if you want good coffee and simple, solid breakfast food. I feel like a lot of cafes these days go for the most over-the-top breakfast creations possible. Everything has to be unique, different, and Instagram-worthy.

Live Oak keeps things much more straightforward, and I actually really liked that about it.

You’ll find all the classics here: scrambled eggs, bacon, waffles with berries, breakfast burritos, and plenty of other breakfast staples. Nothing too crazy, just good food that you actually want to eat in the morning.

7. Red Kettle Coffee

And lastly on my list is Red Kettle Coffee, which I actually haven’t been to myself. I’ve heard good things about it, though, so I figured it deserved a spot on this guide.

It’s technically not in Santa Barbara, it’s over in Montecito and from everything I’ve seen, it looks like a really quirky and cozy little coffee shop.

In hindsight, I honestly wish I would’ve stopped here on my way out of Santa Barbara. I kind of forgot about it at the time, which is a shame.

So, if you’re driving along the coast from Santa Barbara toward Los Angeles and want to stop somewhere for a coffee, Red Kettle looks like a really good option to add to your route. Just keep in mind that this one isn’t based on my own personal experience like the other cafes on this list.

Where Can I Get the Best Coffee in Santa Barbara?

In my opinion, the best coffee in Santa Barbara has to be Dart Coffee or Dune Coffee Roasters. Both have fantastic specialty coffee, and I had some of my favorite lattes and cappuccinos in the city at these two spots.

I’m definitely a specialty coffee guy, and the baristas at both places really impressed me. So if you care more about the quality of the actual coffee than getting some crazy Instagram-worthy drink, I’d definitely start with these two.

Where Can I Get the Best Breakfast Burrito in Santa Barbara?

For the best breakfast burrito in Santa Barbara, I’d have to go with Happy Cat Eats, right by the beach.

I had their Cali Burrito, which is made with mac and cheese and carnitas, and it was incredible. I genuinely didn’t know I needed mac and cheese inside a breakfast burrito in my life, but apparently, I did.

Is Santa Barbara Expensive to Visit?

All in all, I’d say yes, Santa Barbara is expensive, at least compared to my experience in other places around California.

Accommodation was especially expensive compared to many of the other destinations I visited, so I’d definitely keep that in mind when planning your budget.

Is Santa Barbara Worth Visiting?

100%. If money was no issue and I could move anywhere in California, I’d seriously consider Santa Barbara.

I love the Spanish Colonial architecture, the food, wine, and coffee scene, the walkability, and of course, the beach. It just has such a great overall vibe, and I honestly had a hard time finding anything I didn’t like about it.

Where Should I Get Breakfast in Santa Barbara CA?

For breakfast, I’d absolutely recommend Mother Dough Bagels and Cajé Coffee Roasters.

Both were fantastic, although they’re quite different. Motherdough is obviously the place to go if you want an amazing bagel, while Cajé is more of a full breakfast-and-coffee kind of spot.

Either way, you really can’t go wrong with either one.

Final Thoughts on the Best Cafes in Santa Barbara

To wrap this up, I can only say one thing: the sheer number of amazing cafes, coffee shops, and breakfast spots packed into Santa Barbara is kind of crazy.

Sure, Los Angeles has incredible cafes and some seriously good coffee, but you might have to drive 30 minutes between the places you want to try. Here in Santa Barbara, I could walk for 10 minutes and suddenly have five different awesome cafes to choose from. And honestly, that’s one of the things I love most about Santa Barbara.

All the places I recommended in this guide are places where I genuinely had a great experience, which is why I’m recommending them to you. Whether it was the coffee, the food, the atmosphere, or just the overall experience, I really enjoyed my time at all of these spots.
