2 Days in Santa Barbara California: How I Spent 48 Amazing Hours Here (2026)

I really do think Santa Barbara is one of the best places in California for a quick little weekend trip. I literally just got back from spending a few nights here and, honestly, I kinda fell in love with the place.

We spent our days shopping, eating, drinking wine, hanging out at the beach and just enjoying the whole vibe of this really cool little California beach town. Santa Barbara isn’t necessarily the place where you need to have a packed itinerary from 7 AM to 10 PM, and I actually think that’s part of what makes it so nice. You can just walk around, stop for coffee, grab some tacos, have a glass of wine and enjoy yourself.

Two full days is a fantastic amount of time here. You can see the main sights, spend some time at the beach, explore the Funk Zone and still have plenty of time to actually enjoy Santa Barbara instead of running from one activity to the next.

So to give you a better idea of what your own weekend could look like, I’ve put together my 2 Days in Santa Barbara itinerary based on exactly how I spent my 48 hours here.

And spoiler alert: there will be a lot of coffee, food and wine involved!

How to Spend 2 Days in Santa Barbara? My Quick Answer

As I already mentioned in the intro, I don’t think Santa Barbara is necessarily a place where there are tons of sights to tick off or things to do.

There are a handful of must-visit places that we went to, like the Old Mission Santa Barbara and the really beautiful County Courthouse here, which was for sure my favorite.

A big part of our 48 hours was just doing the things I think Santa Barbara does best. We spent plenty of time shopping on the State Street Promenade, which I loved because it’s completely blocked off to cars, and then there was a lot of wine, good Mexican food, cold beers on patios and watching the sunset over the beach.

So no, this isn’t going to be the most packed itinerary you’ve ever seen, but I actually think that’s the point. Santa Barbara is more about slowing down a little, walking around, eating good food, drinking wine and just enjoying the vibe.

And if you’d ask me what the one place you absolutely shouldn’t miss is, I’d probably tell you the Funk Zone. It’s just a few blocks up from the beach and I spent a good amount of time here hopping from wine bar to wine bar, sitting on patios, having dinner and then coming back the next morning for coffee.

My Tips for Visiting Santa Barbara CA

Where I Stayed in Santa Barbara (Location Matters!)

Santa Barbara is so wonderfully walkable, which was probably one of the things I enjoyed most about being here. We stayed at the Franciscan Hotel, which was awesome because we could literally walk to the beach in about 5 minutes and to the Funk Zone in around 10 minutes.

So if you’re visiting Santa Barbara, I’d definitely recommend staying somewhere central. You’re coming here partly to enjoy that laid-back, walkable beach-town vibe, so you might as well take advantage of it.

The Best Time to Visit Santa Barbara (Be Aware of June Gloom!)

One thing I’ve definitely learned from pretty much every local I’ve met in California is that they will all tell you how amazing the weather is year-round. And I’m sure that’s mostly true, so from spring through fall you probably can’t go too wrong.

However, I visited Santa Barbara in June without ever having heard of June Gloom, and yeah… it got me. I was definitely a little disappointed to see so many clouds when I was expecting perfect California beach weather.

It didn’t ruin our trip at all and we still had a great time, but if you’re specifically coming to Santa Barbara for the beach and want the best chance of sunny weather, I’d probably go with July or August instead.

My Favorite Coffee Shops and Food Places

Wow, I was so impressed by the food and cafe scene here in Santa Barbara. For the relatively short amount of time I was here, I somehow managed to visit a ridiculous number of coffee shops and restaurants.

For coffee, I can definitely recommend Dart Coffee and Dune Coffee Roasters, and when it comes to food, East Beach Tacos and Mother Dough Bagels were two of my favorites. The gochujang cream cheese at Mother Dough was especially good!

State Street Is Car-Free – Bikes Are the Way to Go!

Having pedestrian zones with shops and restaurants and no cars is not super common in the USA compared to what I’m used to from European cities, so I absolutely loved the State Street Promenade.

I spent hours walking up and down State Street, popping into little boutiques, buying souvenirs and stopping for lunch or a drink whenever we felt like it.

And if you want to explore a little more of Santa Barbara, I’d definitely recommend getting a bike. We actually got free bike rentals through our hotel and ended up cycling along the waterfront and around town, which was such a fun way to see more of the city.

Santa Barbara Can Be Sleepy!

I’m not sure if locals necessarily would agree with this, but I felt like Santa Barbara was a little sleepy, especially around the Funk Zone. And by sleepy I mean that around 10 PM, a lot of places are closing and that’s pretty much the end of the night.

However, I absolutely did not mind that. At my age now, I will take an early morning coffee with no hangover over staying out drinking until 2 AM any day of the week.

My 2 Days in Santa Barbara Itinerary

Day 1: Bagels, Architecture and Amazing Wines

Morning – Breakfast at Mother Dough Bagels

In case y’all didn’t know, I’m a huge breakfast person and I genuinely cannot start my day without some delicious food in the morning. So naturally, breakfast was one of the first things on my Santa Barbara itinerary.

One of my favorite places was Mother Dough Bagels, which might have some of the best bagels I’ve ever had. We tried their salmon on an everything bagel, and I also got their gochujang cream cheese on a cheese and jalapeño bagel. And oh my god, it was so good. It wasn’t nearly as spicy as you might expect, but it had so much flavor.

I also had a cortado here, which was really good, but apparently their matchas are also worth ordering. At least according to the nice couple we met at the table next to us who seemed very passionate about their matcha!

Midday – Santa Barbara County Courthouse & Old Mission Santa Barbara

After breakfast, we walked up towards the Santa Barbara County Courthouse, which is one of the places in Santa Barbara you really can’t miss it. It’s this huge Spanish Colonial Revival-style building with a bell tower, red roof and whitewashed walls, and the whole thing is just gorgeous.

You can actually go inside for free and head up into the bell tower for some great views over Santa Barbara. Unfortunately, we missed out on that because there was a wedding happening when we visited and we didn’t want to be those tourists wandering around in the middle of someone’s wedding.

We still walked through the gardens, took some pictures and had a look around, and I definitely think it’s worth adding to your itinerary.

From Mother Dough Bagels, it’s only about a 15–20 minute walk to the courthouse, so it’s an easy one to do on foot. After that, though, you’ll want some kind of transportation for the next stop.

We then headed over to Old Mission Santa Barbara, which is another really beautiful and historic spot in the city. If you’re not familiar with California’s missions, they were religious outposts established by the Spanish during their colonization of California, and there are 21 Spanish missions spread throughout the state.

Coffee Break – Handlebar Coffee Roasters

After all that walking, exploring and cycling around Santa Barbara, I needed two things: coffee and air conditioning.

Luckily, there’s a really cool coffee shop not far from the Mission called Handlebar Coffee Roasters, and I really enjoyed it here. I ordered another cortado and an almond croissant, which was delicious, but they also have proper cafe food like avocado toast, bagel lox, granola and yogurt if you’re actually hungry.

I only made it here once during our trip, but I really liked it and would definitely recommend stopping here when you’re visiting the Mission.

Afternoon – State Street Promenade

After our coffee break, we basically circled back down towards the beach and the center of Santa Barbara and spent the afternoon walking along State Street Promenade.

This is the main shopping area in Santa Barbara, with loads of little boutiques, shops, restaurants and bars, and the best part is that it’s completely blocked off to cars.

I’m pretty used to pedestrian zones from European cities, but they’re definitely not as common here in the USA, so I really enjoyed just being able to walk around without cars everywhere. We spent quite a while here shopping, grabbing some drinks and picking up a bunch of California souvenirs for my family.

Evening – Urban Wine Tour + Dinner in the Funk Zone

And then, of course, we ended the day in the Funk Zone.

Honestly, this was basically where we ended up every single night in Santa Barbara, and I’d recommend it for pretty much any evening you’re here. There are so many cool restaurants, breweries, bars and wine tasting rooms all packed into just a few blocks, so it’s incredibly easy to hop from one place to another.

One popular thing to do here is the Urban Wine Trail, which is basically wine-bar hopping around the Funk Zone.

I tried quite a few of the wine bars here myself, and some of my favorites were Pali Wine Co. (which has pretty mediocre Google reviews but I personally had a fantastic experience), Fess Parker, Melville Winery and Santa Barbara Wine Collective.

That night I didn’t even have a proper dinner because basically every wine bar has some kind of charcuterie, so I accidentally ate my body weight in cheese, salami and crackers instead.

If you actually want a proper meal, though, definitely check out Mony’s Mexican Food. Their tacos and burritos are incredible and it’s a great casual option in the area.

Day 2: Beach, Boardwalk, Tacos & Stearns Wharf

Morning – Coffee & Breakfast at Dart Coffee (or Helena Avenue Bakery)

Out of all the cafes and coffee shops I tried in Santa Barbara, my favorite was definitely Dart Coffee in the Funk Zone. The coffee was delicious, the vibe was great, and it’s just a really cool place to start the day.

I ordered a latte here, which was perfect, and we also got a blueberry donut that was super yummy. It can get pretty busy though, so just be aware of that, but they also have a huge outdoor seating area across the street with loads of space.

Alternatively, I can also highly recommend Helena Avenue Bakery for breakfast. So if you’re like me and want to try as many different places as possible, I’d actually get your coffee at Dart and then walk down the street to have breakfast at Helena Avenue Bakery. I thought they had better options if you’re looking for a proper breakfast rather than just coffee and a pastry.

Midday – Beach & Boardwalk

If I’m in Santa Barbara, I’m going to the beach ok! Or at the very least, I’m going to walk along the beach.

Obviously, this will depend a lot on the weather when you visit, but we got lucky and were able to properly enjoy the beach one morning. Our hotel was only about a 5-minute walk away, so it was incredibly easy to just walk down whenever we felt like it.

We also spent some time walking up and down the boardwalk, which I really enjoyed. There are these huuuuge palm trees along the waterfront, and the whole area is just beautiful. It’s perfect for a picnic, a beach day, a walk or honestly just taking some cool pictures.

Afternoon – Stearns Wharf

Right by the beach is Stearns Wharf, which is the main pier in Santa Barbara and definitely worth walking up and down while you’re here.

There are a bunch of restaurants on the pier, although I didn’t personally eat at any of them. I’ve heard good things about Deep Sea Tasting Room, though, if you’re looking for seafood with a view.

There’s also the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Sea Center, which is supposed to be really cool, especially if you’re visiting with kids. They have some pretty impressive exhibits, including a huge model of a whale hanging from the ceiling, which looks awesome.

Evening – Tacos & Breweries

And of course, we have to finish the day with some tacos and drinks.

One of the coolest casual food spots I found in Santa Barbara was East Beach Tacos, which was actually recommended to me by a local friend, so I feel like I can officially call it a local recommendation.

It’s basically a little taco stand, but they make amazing fish tacos. They were so good. And then, because apparently tacos weren’t enough entertainment, they also have batting cages where 25 pitches only cost $4.

So obviously we had to give it a shot while waiting for our tacos.

I had literally never played baseball before, so I was absolutely terrible, but it was still a lot of fun guys!

Afterwards, we went to a couple of the breweries around Santa Barbara. We started at Third Window Brewing and then headed over to Topa Topa Brewing Co. Both had really good beers, great patios and that relaxed California brewery vibe I really love.

Day Trips from Santa Barbara That I Did and You Should Look Into

I know this 2-day itinerary is very much about just hanging out in Santa Barbara, which I personally really like. If I’m only here for two days, I actually want to see Santa Barbara and enjoy the beach, food and wine rather than spending half the time driving somewhere else.

But if you’re staying a little longer or just need a bit more activity, there are some really cool day trips from Santa Barbara that I did myself and definitely think are worth looking into.

Day Trip to the Wineries (Vega Vineyard and Farms & Sunstone Winery)

There are some really awesome wineries around Santa Barbara, and as much as I do love a good wine bar, I’ll always prefer going to an actual vineyard. I just love sitting outside, looking out over the vines and enjoying a glass of wine.

One of the main wine areas close to Santa Barbara is the Santa Ynez Valley, where we visited Sunstone Winery. I really liked it here and it’s close enough to Santa Barbara that it makes for a very easy day trip.

We also went further north, about a 90-minute drive from Santa Barbara, into the Edna Valley around San Luis Obispo (SLO), where there are even more incredible wineries. We visited Sextant Winery, Claiborne & Churchill and Talley Vineyards, and had a great time at all of them.

Day Trip to Ojai

Ojai is for sure one of the cutest little towns around Santa Barbara, and honestly, it kinda reminded me of a mini version of Santa Barbara.

We stopped here on our way down to Los Angeles the day we left Santa Barbara, and I’m really glad we did because it was absolutely worth the stop. It’s a super cute little town with Spanish Revival architecture, quirky boutique shops, flea markets and some really good coffee shops like Three Birds.

One of my favorite random things we found was Bart’s Books, which is this really cool outdoor library and bookshop.

Ojai has a very similar vibe to Santa Barbara in the sense that there isn’t a crazy amount of things you have to do. It’s more about strolling around, eating something good, grabbing a coffee, shopping and enjoying the atmosphere.

FAQs About How I Spent 48 Hours in Santa Barbara, My Itinerary

Is Santa Barbara worth visiting?

Absolutely. Santa Barbara is such a beautiful beach town, and honestly, even when I first arrived and was driving past all those palm trees and Spanish Colonial Revival houses, I was kinda speechless because it was so gorgeous. I know that sounds cheesy, but it really did feel like I had just driven into the stereotypical California beach town I had imagined in my head.

Is Santa Barbara expensive to visit?

I’ll be honest and say yes. I know expensive is always relative, but compared to many of the other places we visited on our California road trip, I’d say Santa Barbara was probably one of the more expensive stops overall. Accommodation, food, drinks and shopping all definitely added up.

How many days should I spend in Santa Barbara?

I think two full days is enough for Santa Barbara, especially if you arrive Friday night and leave Monday morning. You’ll have plenty of time to see the main sights, enjoy the beach, eat some good food and spend some time in the Funk Zone.

However, I actually spent 4 days here and did a few day trips to wineries and nearby towns, and I could have easily stayed even longer.

Where should I eat in Santa Barbara?

There is a busload of incredible restaurants and good food here. For more casual eats, I’d definitely recommend East Beach Tacos and Happy Cat Eats, but if you want something a little more elevated, I can also highly recommend The Lark Santa Barbara in the Funk Zone.

What is the best wine bar in Santa Barbara?

There are so many to choose from, but I loved Pali Wine Co. It has pretty mediocre reviews on Google, but I actually had a fantastic time there so don’t let that scare you. I can also highly recommend Fess Parker and the Santa Barbara Wine Collective. They’re all basically right next to each other, so you could easily make a little wine-bar-hopping evening out of it.

Final Thoughts on My Two Day Santa Barbara Itinerary

I really think 2 days in Santa Barbara can be so much fun, especially if you’re looking for a place where you can just full-on treat yourself for a weekend.

My favorite thing about Santa Barbara was for sure the Funk Zone and the ridiculous amount of high-quality and fun cocktail bars, wine bars, restaurants, breweries and coffee shops all packed into such a small area. I went out there pretty much every night I was in Santa Barbara, and it was just so easy to have a good time, check out multiple spots and walk from one place to the next.

You can even do the Urban Wine Trail, which is basically wine-bar hopping around Santa Barbara, and that’s another pretty great way to spend an afternoon.

Sure, there are also more serious things to do, which I enjoyed too, like visiting the Old Mission Santa Barbara, checking out the County Courthouse and spending time at the beach. But for me, the food and drink scene was definitely the highlight.

I hope this little itinerary gave you a good idea of what’s going on in Santa Barbara and how you can fill 2 days in the city. Happy travels!
