Is Santa Barbara Expensive to Visit? My Honest Cost Breakdown in 2026

There are definitely a bunch of places in the USA, and California in particular, that have a reputation for being on the more expensive side, both to live in and to visit as a tourist. And I feel like Santa Barbara is definitely one of those places. 

Whenever I hear the name Santa Barbara, I immediately think, yep, that’s probably expensive!

I just got back from a 4-day trip to Santa Barbara, so I guess I finally have the answer to whether Santa Barbara is actually expensive to visit or not.

In this guide on ‘Is Santa Barbara expensive’, I’ve put together my full cost breakdown, including what I paid for hotels, food, our rental car and everything else, so you can get a much better idea of how much a trip to Santa Barbara will actually cost you.

Is Santa Barbara Expensive to Visit? My Quick Answer

I know some of you don’t care to read my entire cost breakdown and just want a quick answer: Is Santa Barbara expensive to visit, yes or no?

Well, my quick answer is YES, for sure.

Of course, I’m well aware that “expensive” is pretty subjective, so I can really only tell you how it felt to me. I did a 4-week road trip from San Francisco to San Diego, and as part of that trip, I spent four days in Santa Barbara. And honestly, it was definitely one of the most expensive, if not the most expensive, places I visited during that entire road trip.

I’d personally consider myself a mid-budget traveler. I’m not always looking for the cheapest hotel, the cheapest food, or the cheapest shopping, but I also have absolutely no interest in spending hundreds of dollars on fine dining or staying in luxury hotels. I want things to be nice, but within reason.

For this trip, I stayed at the Franciscan Hotel, which I thought was pretty good value for money. For food, I did a mix of cheaper taco places but I also went to wine bars, cafes, breweries, and some nicer restaurants. And honestly, this is one area where I didn’t really want to be stingy.

That’s also why I personally wouldn’t want to visit Santa Barbara on an ultra-tight budget. Of course, you can save money by staying somewhere cheaper, cooking your own meals, but I feel like you’d be missing a little bit of what makes Santa Barbara so enjoyable in the first place.

My 4 Day Santa Barbara Cost Breakdown (For 2 People)

1. Cost of Accommodation in Santa Barbara California

After visiting quite a few other places in California like San Francisco, Lake Tahoe, Big Sur, and so on, seeing the price tags on the hotels in Santa Barbara definitely came as a bit of a shock to me. It was by far the most expensive place we stayed during our road trip.

We stayed at the Franciscan Hotel in Santa Barbara, which is already one of the more affordable options in the area, but I really loved it. It’s in a beautiful Spanish-style building, the beds were super comfortable, and the service was great. I really wanted to stay at the Santa Barbara Inn, but that was a little outside my budget.

There are definitely cheaper options in Santa Barbara, but I specifically wanted to stay in the city center, close to the beach and the Funk Zone, which is where a lot of the bars and restaurants are. That way, I could walk or bike pretty much anywhere I wanted to go, which was awesome. I barely needed my car while I was in Santa Barbara.

There are more affordable places further outside the city center, but then you’ll always have to drive into Santa Barbara to get to the main areas, and personally, I just didn’t want to deal with that.

2. How Much Did We Spend Eating Out in Santa Barbara?

I really do believe that one of the main things to do in Santa Barbara is indulgence. I know that sounds a little stupid, but there just isn’t a ton of actual sightseeing or activities you need to pack into your days here. What I really loved was the whole wine bar, cafe, restaurant, and food scene. It’s so good and honestly just so much fun, which is why I made this kind of a priority during our trip.

I don’t think I ever really said no to something because of the price, but my standards also aren’t that high.Yes, I went to a lot of wine bars, but I also ate plenty of tacos and other cheaper food, so I feel like it evened out pretty well in the end.

There are a bunch of places I highly want to recommend, though. Motherdough Bagels has incredible gochujang cream cheese, I loved Dart Coffee, and East Beach Tacos was awesome. For wine, Pali Wine Co and Fess Parker were both great, but honestly, you can’t really go wrong just exploring the Funk Zone and seeing what catches your eye.

So, the total amount I spent on food over our four days basically includes 2–3 meals a day, coffees, beers, wine, and all those little food and drink stops along the way. I usually only eat twice a day, so this wasn’t exactly four days of breakfast, lunch, and dinner every single day.

3. Rental Car + Gas

I mentioned earlier that we did a huge road trip from San Francisco, over to Lake Tahoe, and then down the coast to Palm Springs and San Diego over the course of one month. So obviously, we had a rental car for the entire trip, but here I’ll just break down the cost of the rental car and gas for the four days we spent in Santa Barbara.

I know many of you will have your own car, so the rental car cost might not be that interesting to you, other than the gas prices, which, by the way, are pretty high in California.

However, once I was in Santa Barbara, I personally didn’t use my car once. I absolutely loved how walkable the city was. It’s not super common in American cities that I can just walk literally EVERYWHERE I need to go. The beach, shopping, restaurants, cafes, bars, all of it was basically a 10-minute walk from my hotel.

That’s probably one of the things I loved most about Santa Barbara. Technically, I didn’t even need my rental car while I was here, but I still feel like it’s one of those things that’s good to have, especially if you’re planning on taking trips out to the vineyards or exploring areas outside the city.

4. How Much Did We Spend on Activities in Santa Barbara?

Santa Barbara is definitely not a very activity-heavy place, at least in my opinion. Sure, you could book a wine tour, go sailing, or hop on a sightseeing bus, but I didn’t do any of those. Most of the activities I did were completely free, like going to the beach, visiting the Santa Barbara County Courthouse and Old Mission Santa Barbara, or going hiking nearby.

I did take a trip to Sunstone Winery (although I included the wine flight we got there in the food section), and I also took a day trip to nearby Ojai, which is a really cute little town and one I highly recommend visiting. Other than that, I didn’t really do any other paid activities.

The only actual paid activity I did in Santa Barbara was a wine tasting at Pali Wine Co, which cost around $80 for two people and was super fun. It was actually part of an event they were hosting with live music and everything, so it felt like a really fun way to spend an afternoon.

5. Miscellaneous: Shopping, Snacks & Groceries

Lastly, I have everything else that I spent money on here. This includes random little things like buying a bottle of water at a corner shop or grabbing a snack, but it also includes all the shopping I did while I was here.

Right in the middle of Santa Barbara, you have the State Street Promenade, which is a huge pedestrian zone that’s completely blocked off to cars and filled with shops and restaurants. I absolutely loved it. It reminded me so much of European city centers, which I always love seeing here in the USA.

I could have definitely spent a lot of money here because there are so many cute boutiques, souvenir shops, and other stores, but I ended up keeping my shopping pretty reasonable. I bought some souvenirs for my family back home and two T-shirts, so I didn’t spend that much at all.

Of course, if you’re coming to Santa Barbara specifically for the shopping, this is where you could easily add a much higher amount to your budget.

So, after adding everything up, here’s what we spent during our 4 days in Santa Barbara:

• Accommodation: $871
• Eating out: $537
• Rental car: $200
• Activities: $80
• Shopping & miscellaneous: $85

Total cost for 4 days in Santa Barbara for 2 people: $1,773

That comes down to $887 per person, or around $222 per person per day.

I don’t think that’s terrible at all, although compared to many of the other destinations we visited during our road trip, Santa Barbara was definitely on the more expensive side. 

I did want to stay in a nice-ish hotel in a good location, and I also wanted to enjoy all the good food and wine bars Santa Barbara has to offer, so all in all, I’m pretty happy with how much we ended up spending.

There are definitely plenty of ways to make a trip to Santa Barbara more expensive, especially depending on the hotel you book, but you can also totally make it cheaper if you’re traveling with a smaller budget.

Santa Barbara on a Budget: How We Tried to Save Money

This is totally just my opinion, but I personally wouldn’t want to come to Santa Barbara on a really tight budget just for the sake of it. I feel like there are other places nearby that are a lot more fun to visit on a budget, like San Luis Obispo, Ojai, Big Sur, and so on, where accommodation and food are definitely cheaper.

That being said, there are still plenty of ways to save money if you want to when visiting Santa Barbara.

Visit at a Cheaper Time of the Year

Whenever I’m planning a trip far in advance, I usually have a look on Booking.com, pick a hotel I like, and then check the calendar to see how the prices change throughout the year.

For example, I was in Santa Barbara in June, so obviously prices were pretty high, but if you look at February or March, you’ll often find much cheaper rates. It’s definitely worth checking the prices for different months before you book.

Stay in a Cheaper Hotel

The hotel I stayed at, the Franciscan Hotel, is definitely not the fanciest hotel in Santa Barbara, but it’s also not the cheapest option either. There are definitely more affordable options, including motels a little further outside the city center.

If you’re happy to drive into Santa Barbara every day and don’t mind being a little further out, this is definitely something worth considering. You can save quite a bit of money on accommodation this way.

Spend Less Time in Santa Barbara

I spent a whole four days in Santa Barbara, and while I really enjoyed my time here, I also don’t think I necessarily needed that long. I could have easily done it with two full days.

So, if you just want to come for a weekend, arriving Friday night and leaving Sunday night is totally fine too. You’ll still have plenty of time to experience the city, and obviously spending two nights instead of four will cut your accommodation and overall costs pretty significantly.

Save Money on Eating Out

Ugh, this is where I personally don’t want to save money because I love eating out. I love going to the wine bars, coffee shops, restaurants, and all the other places that make Santa Barbara so much fun.

But if you wanted to, you could obviously keep your food costs much lower. Get some sandwiches, take advantage of your hotel breakfast, grab a cheap drip coffee instead of an expensive cappuccino, or have one glass of wine instead of three.

There are so many little ways to save money on food here, and if you’re willing to cut back on eating and drinking out, I think this is one area where you could easily bring your overall budget down quite a bit.

Is Santa Barbara Worth Visiting?

Absolutely! I loved Santa Barbara, and I honestly thought it was one of the most beautiful coastal towns I’ve seen in California. I’m just obsessed with the Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, the beach, and all the huge palm trees. It’s basically the California aesthetic I had in my head before I ever visited.

What Is the Best Luxury Hotel in Santa Barbara?

There are, of course, some amazing luxury hotels in Santa Barbara, but personally, I think the Santa Barbara Inn is one of the best when it comes to quality, location, and overall vibe.

Is Santa Barbara Expensive?

Yes, I definitely think it is. Accommodation and food in particular cost me a lot more here than in many other places in California. However, there are still plenty of ways to save money if you really want to.

What Is the Best Time to Visit Santa Barbara?

I think the best time to visit Santa Barbara is late summer, so August or even September. I visited in June and got full-on June Gloom with a lot of cloudy days, which is why I’d personally prefer visiting later in the summer.

Do I Need a Car in Santa Barbara?

Actually, no! I stayed at the Franciscan Hotel, which is super central. I could walk to the beach in about 5 minutes and to the Funk Zone in around 10 minutes, and the hotel also had free bike rentals.

Because of that, I never needed my car at all while I was in Santa Barbara.

Final Thoughts on How Much Does It Cost to Visit Santa Barbara California

All in all, I can only say it again: Santa Barbara is for sure one of the more expensive places in California that I’ve visited.

Now that I’ve gone through my entire budget breakdown, I do think accommodation is what really drives up the prices here. I struggled to find affordable places to stay. In other places like Lake Tahoe or Big Sur, there was always some type of budget option available, but I didn’t really feel like that was the case in Santa Barbara.

So, whenever I come back to Santa Barbara, I’ll probably keep it pretty similar to my last visit and just treat myself a little. That’s really what Santa Barbara does best anyway: a good hotel, good food, wine bars, cafes, and being close to the beach. That’s the vibe here.

So I’d always recommend not trying to budget your trip too hard. If your budget is smaller, I’d honestly recommend visiting somewhere like Lake Tahoe or Big Sur in the summer instead. Both are fantastic California destinations and, in my experience, much easier to enjoy on a smaller budget.
