There are a few non-negotiables for me as a full-time traveler who has been traveling for the past 7 years, and one of the biggest ones is always being connected. For me, that means having a good eSIM.

I just got back from a eight-week trip to Spain, where I explored Mallorca as well as did a road trip through mainland Spain, and I needed internet for so many things and in so many different situations. From navigating with Google Maps on our road trip to looking up restaurants, finding hotels, booking things and just generally figuring out where the hell we were going, having reliable internet was basically essential.

While I was in Spain, I tried three different eSIMs to see which one worked best for me. I looked at things like the internet speed, coverage, how easy the apps were to use, pricing and just my overall experience using them while traveling around Spain.

And out of those three, I definitely have a clear winner.

I know many of you don’t necessarily want to read through this entire comparison article I’ve written. Sometimes you just want an answer and basically want me to tell you which eSIM to get, so for you guys, I’m getting straight to the point.

I did a road trip from Malaga to Granada to Cordoba to Seville, flew to Madrid and Barcelona, and then spent a whole month in Mallorca living my best island life. During those eight weeks, I used three different eSIMs to see how they compared.

Of course, I didn’t have to try three different ones, but I’m a travel blogger after all, so trying products, testing them out and then telling you guys which ones I actually liked the most is kind of my job.

I tried Orange Travel, Sim Local and Saily during this trip, and for a start, I have to say that all three were good. I never had some terrible experience where one of them completely failed me. They all did what I needed them to do.

But after looking at things like coverage, internet speed, price, how easy the apps were to use and my overall experience, I’d say that Orange Travel was the winner for me.

What Is an eSIM?

Before we get started with the different eSIMs, I figured I should quickly explain what an eSIM actually is, just in case there are some people completely new to it reading this.

An eSIM is basically an electronic SIM card, so the days of having to buy a physical SIM card at a store and then trying to get that tiny little thing into the slot on your phone are pretty much over.

Today, you can do basically everything through an app. You can buy a plan, activate your eSIM and get connected without ever needing a physical SIM card at all.

And honestly, in my opinion and from my own experience, this makes traveling so much easier and stress-free.

That’s really the main reason I use eSIMs. It’s just convenient. I can land in a new country, activate my plan and have internet without having to find a phone store, buy a physical SIM or mess around with swapping SIM cards.

Do You Even Need an eSIM for Spain? (Yes, There Are Also Europe Plans Available)

This is probably one of the questions I get asked the most: Do you actually need an eSIM in Spain?

And I’d say it depends, but in most cases, you’ll probably want one. At least I usually do.

Of course, there is Wi-Fi available in your hotel, restaurants and plenty of other places, but there are so many situations while traveling where I personally needed mobile data.

If I’m taking public transportation and need to look up metro lines or buses, want to call an Uber, rent a car and use Google Maps to navigate, or simply want to look up reviews for a restaurant, having internet on my phone makes everything so much easier.

And I needed it for all of those things during my time in Spain. It didn’t matter whether I was in Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Mallorca or somewhere out in the rural Spanish countryside, having mobile data was just super convenient.

I also personally feel a lot safer knowing I have internet when I’m traveling. If something happens, I get lost, have an accident or simply need to contact someone, I want to know that I can actually get online and make a call or send a message.

And I know many of you will probably be doing what I did and visiting multiple countries in Europe on the same trip. Maybe you’re doing a big European summer and going from Spain to France, Italy, Portugal or somewhere else.

In that case, you don’t need to buy a completely new eSIM every time you cross a border.

There are also Europe-wide plans available, which is actually what I personally used. I went from Spain straight to France, and I still had internet in both countries without having to buy a new plan, activate another eSIM or mess around with anything.

1. Orange Travel // The Best eSIM for Travelling Europe

Orange Travel is the eSIM that I had for about four weeks while I was in Spain, and I’ve actually been using it for quite a while now. I also used it in France on the same trip because I was using one of their Europe plans, which meant I could just move between countries as much as I wanted and keep my internet the entire time.

I did basically everything I was telling you about earlier with Orange Travel. I used it in the big cities, I used it in more rural areas of the Spanish countryside, and I always had great coverage with at least 4G/LTE or 5G. I never really had any issues with my connection.

And because I’m also a digital nomad and work while I travel, I could hotspot my laptop and actually get work done using the eSIM, which was awesome. I really don’t have much patience for crappy internet when I’m trying to work, so having a reliable connection is a pretty big deal for me.

What I personally appreciate the most about Orange Travel, though, on top of it just being a good internet and eSIM provider, is that they actually offer unlimited calls and text messages with their plans.

And I ended up using that feature way more than I thought I would. I called restaurants to see if they were still open, called beach clubs to make reservations, and even had to call our rental car company when we had an issue with the car.

So having an actual phone number and being able to just pick up my phone and call someone was surprisingly useful.

2. Saily

This was actually my first time using Saily in a very long time. I had used them a while ago when I was in Asia and then kinda never used them again, even though I was pretty happy with their performance as my eSIM at the time, so I figured I’d give them another go.

And I was super happy with Saily. Their coverage and internet speed were fantastic, and I also really like their app, which is very easy to use. I was also surprised by how affordable they were, especially compared to some of the other eSIMs I’ve used.

The only negative or downside I personally had with Saily was that they only offer data, so unlike Orange Travel, I didn’t get any calls or texts included.

And weirdly, I really wanted that in Europe! I just got so used to calling places. I know it sounds weird, but I feel like in Europe calling restaurants or beach clubs to make reservations is just a lot more common, so especially if you’re doing a European summer, I personally recommend getting an eSIM that includes calls and texts!

3. Sim Local

Sim Local was actually my go-to SIM card for quite a while a few years back, and I had been really happy with them. So when I bought one again for two weeks in Spain, I was fairly happy with them this time around as well.

I had no issues with the internet speed or coverage while I was in the cities in Spain. However, I did notice that in some more rural areas, I wouldn’t have a signal.

However, I don’t know if that would have happened with other eSIMs as well in those areas or if that was something specific to Sim Local, but if you’re only planning on visiting the bigger cities in Spain, then Sim Local works totally fine.

After using so many different eSIMs by now, I do think the Sim Local app is a little more confusing and it’s just a bit more of a hassle to set up an eSIM.

I’m pretty used to eSIMs by now, so it was fairly easy for me, but if this is your first time getting an eSIM, I think the Orange Travel eSIM was much easier to set up.

However, Sim Local overall still did a decent job for me while I was in Spain.

Let me wrap this up quickly by saying that most eSIMs out there will do the job. I don’t think I’ve ever had an absolutely awful experience where I couldn’t get an eSIM working at all or where things just didn’t feel right.

However, there definitely are some bigger differences when it comes to price, app usability, coverage and what you actually get with each plan.

Some eSIMs are just way too expensive in my opinion for what they offer, and some apps don’t feel very user-friendly. And one thing that has really bothered me in the past is when I have to sit there and figure out how the hell to set up an eSIM. Like, it’s supposed to make traveling easier, so why does it have to be so difficult, you know?
