Is Santa Barbara Worth Visiting? My Honest Review in 2026

If I was moving to California tomorrow and had to pick a place to live, there’s a really high chance I’d pick Santa Barbara.

I literally just got back from a visit there and I loved it so much. Santa Barbara just feels so stereotypically California to me, with the huge palm trees, the beach, the good food and all the Spanish-style architecture. It’s basically exactly what I imagined a California town would look like.

And honestly, I feel like I’m already giving away the answer to the question “Is Santa Barbara worth visiting?” because obviously, yes.

But in this little guide, I want to get into it a little deeper. I’ll tell you what I loved about Santa Barbara, a couple of things I honestly didn’t like quite as much, and then I’ll give you some extra tips on things to do while you’re here.

Is Santa Barbara Worth Visiting? My Quick Answer

So you probably already guessed it, but yes, Santa Barbara is absolutely worth visiting and honestly, I’d even go as far as saying it’s one of my favorite places we visited on our California road trip.

We spent 4 full days here after driving down the California coast for a whole month, and Santa Barbara was one of those places where I immediately thought that I could absolutely live here!

We ate SO much good food, went to wineries, spent time at the beach, walked around the city and basically just enjoyed the whole California lifestyle. And I think that’s really what Santa Barbara is about.

You’re not necessarily coming here to pack your days with 15 different activities. It’s more about good food, wine, beaches, shopping, beautiful streets and just enjoying being here.

My favorite thing about Santa Barbara was probably how walkable it is. We could literally spend the entire day exploring on foot, starting at the pier and beach, walking through the Funk Zone with all the restaurants and bars, and then continuing over to the historic courthouse and downtown.

And if you’re from the USA, you know that a genuinely walkable city is definitely not a given here!!

So for me, Santa Barbara gets a 10/10 for the vibes, food, beaches and walkability. If you’re doing a California road trip, I’d absolutely put it on your list and I already know I’ll be back.

What I Love About Santa Barbara California

1. Walkability

I really do love a walkable city, and especially in the USA, that’s not always very common since everything is so car-centered. But here in Santa Barbara, I was obsessed with how I could literally walk anywhere and everywhere.

During the 4 days I was here, I didn’t need the car a single time, which was awesome. It was just so convenient, and I always felt safe walking around everywhere I went. I walked to breakfast, lunch and dinner, I walked to the beach and I walked to go shopping. I stayed at the Franciscan Hotel Santa Barbara btw!

2. Beautiful Architecture

The architecture in so many California towns, but specifically here in Santa Barbara, is just awesome. I love the old Spanish-style architecture with the white houses and red roofs, and it’s kind of everywhere here, which makes the whole city look gorgeous.

Especially compared to some other cities around here, like Los Angeles for instance, Santa Barbara is just really beautiful.

3. Good Food

I was so surprised by how awesome the food here was. Santa Barbara is definitely a little smaller and doesn’t have nearly as many restaurants as the major cities, but I had some really really good food here.

I had some incredible bagels at Motherdough Bagels, then some amazing tacos at East Beach Tacos, fantastic coffee at Dart Coffee, awesome beer at Topa Topa Brewing Co. and honestly, the list just goes on.

4. Great Location

Santa Barbara is in such a great location too. We drove here coming from Northern California via Morro Bay, but it would also be super easy to get here from Los Angeles.

And then once you’re here, there are so many cool places to visit nearby. We did a bunch of really fun half-day and day trips while we were here, including Vega Vineyard and Farm, OstrichLand USA and Ojai.

So even if you spend a few days exploring Santa Barbara itself, you’ve got plenty of other cool places nearby if you want to get out and explore a little more.

What I Didn’t Like About Santa Barbara CA

1. Santa Barbara Can Be Expensive

One of the major things I noticed is that Santa Barbara definitely can be expensive to visit. I for sure noticed that our hotel here was way more expensive than in most other places we stayed in California.

However, I just checked again on Booking.com, and if I would’ve booked earlier and maybe visited in September or October instead of the summer, I for sure could’ve saved some money on accommodation.

Restaurants, shopping and everything else also definitely felt more on the expensive side from what I noticed. Which I guess makes sense, Santa Barbara has a reputation for being a place where a lot of wealthy people live.

2. There Aren’t a Ton of Activities

I did mention this before, and I don’t necessarily think it’s a negative, but there honestly isn’t a ton of stuff to do in Santa Barbara apart from just enjoying Santa Barbara for what it is.

I think that really depends on your expectations. Mine were actually perfect for this trip. I was expecting to just be shopping, drinking wine all day, eating tacos and pretending like I lived here in Santa Barbara.

But if you’re someone who needs to have a huge list of activities and attractions to keep you busy every single day, then Santa Barbara might not be the place for you.

The Top Things to Do in Santa Barbara

Visit the Santa Barbara County Courthouse

One of the most beautiful buildings in Santa Barbara, and probably one of the most historic too, is the courthouse here, which I can confirm is absolutely gorgeous.

It’s this huge Spanish-style building with palm trees and gardens all around, and you can technically even go up into the clock tower for some amazing views over Santa Barbara.

We didn’t do that though because when we showed up, there was a wedding happening right there and we felt bad wandering around and potentially interrupting it.

Walk Down Stearns Wharf

Stearns Wharf is the pier here in Santa Barbara, and it’s a lot of fun to walk all the way down. There are a bunch of seafood restaurants and gift shops, and the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Sea Center is down there too, which is pretty cool.

I didn’t eat here myself, but I’ve heard great things, especially about the Deep Sea Tasting Room if you want to stop for some food or drinks with a view.

Go Shopping on State Street Promenade

We loved walking down State Street Promenade, which is basically the big main street through Santa Barbara, and the best part about it is that it’s a pedestrian zone.

I’m definitely used to this from European cities, where the city center is usually a pedestrian zone with no cars and all the shops, but that is usually not really a thing in the USA.

Here they blocked off the whole street, so we spent a good part of the day shopping, buying souvenirs, eating and drinking here. It was just a really nice area to walk around.

Dinner & Drinks in the Funk Zone

My number one favorite area in Santa Barbara is the Funk Zone. I know the name sounds weird, but it’s super cool here.

It’s a few blocks right near the center of Santa Barbara, and this is where you’ll find some of the coolest cafes, restaurants and bars in the city.

I went to quite a few places here. I had beers at Topa Topa Brewing Co. and Validation Ale, coffee at Dart Coffee, and even did a wine tasting at Pali Wine Co.

It’s a relatively small area, but there’s just a ton going on, and honestly, I could’ve spent another whole day here.

Enjoy the Beach in Santa Barbara

Being by the beach is just awesome, and Santa Barbara has a beautiful and surprisingly quiet beach, which I really appreciated.

When we were in Santa Barbara, we spent a whole morning on the beach, and there really weren’t many people there. I honestly don’t know why because at the same time, the beaches around San Diego were definitely way busier.

So if you like having some relaxing beach time without having a music speaker blasting next to you at all times, Santa Barbara is a pretty great spot.

Is Santa Barbara Expensive to Visit?

I would say yes, it is. I have noticeably spent more here in Santa Barbara than in many other places, even within California (but of course California in itself is expensive).

Accommodation, food, shopping, all of that was definitely more on the pricey side.

What Is There to Do in Santa Barbara?

I just spent a lot of time exploring Santa Barbara on foot, drinking good wine, shopping and eating good food, but there are also some cool day trips and wineries you can visit from Santa Barbara.

Where Should I Eat in Santa Barbara?

I really loved the tacos at East Beach Tacos, burritos at Happy Cat Eats, and the bagels at Motherdough Bagels were incredible.

What Is Santa Barbara Known For?

I think Santa Barbara is known for its overall vibes and atmosphere. It’s just such a cool town right on the beach, with huuuuge palm trees and all the Spanish Colonial Revival architecture.

Like, it’s so gorgeous here that if I ever win the lottery, you bet I’ll be moving to Santa Barbara.

Where Should I Stay in Santa Barbara?

I always recommend staying somewhere close to the Funk Zone, the beach and State Street Promenade, mainly because Santa Barbara is so walkable. So don’t ruin that for yourself by staying somewhere outside of the city center.

I highly recommend the Franciscan Hotel.

Final Thoughts on Should I Visit Santa Barbara?

All in all, Santa Barbara is actually one of my favorite places I have visited in California, even though I have to admit we found there wasn’t a ton to do.

Funny enough though, we are currently looking for a place to settle down, and Santa Barbara would be awesome for that, so maybe that’s why we liked it so much.

However, there is still enough to do for a really cool weekend. 2–3 nights in Santa Barbara are perfect. We really enjoyed just walking through Santa Barbara, eating, drinking and shopping. It was such a vibe, and then there are some gorgeous wineries all around too.

I think Santa Barbara is the perfect weekend trip.
