Where to Stay in Santa Barbara California: My Top 7 Hotels & Areas in 2026

Santa Barbara is one of my favorite cities I’ve visited this year, not just in California but in the USA in general. The second I drove into the city with the ocean and palm trees around me, I was literally obsessed. The Spanish architecture, the beach, the food, the wineries… I love it all.

Santa Barbara is also fairly small and super walkable, which is why where you stay matters quite a bit here. You really don’t want to ruin that walkability by staying somewhere in the middle of nowhere, do you?

To help you guys out a little, I’ve put together this guide on where to stay in Santa Barbara based on my own experience, including my favorite areas in Santa Barbara as well as some of my favorite hotels. Whether you’re staying for a few days, planning a longer trip, or just coming for a weekend getaway, hopefully this guide will help you find the right place to stay.

Where to Stay in Santa Barbara – My Experience (Quick Answer)

I can’t say it enough, but I really loved Santa Barbara, and if I magically won the lottery today, you better believe that tomorrow I’d be moving to Santa Barbara.

To me, as someone who’s used to European cities, Santa Barbara almost felt like being back home. The whole downtown and city center was just so beautifully walkable, and the entire time I was here, I didn’t have to use my car a single time. How freaking cool is that?!

Of course, that only worked because we also stayed pretty central, and that’s probably the biggest tip I can give you: stay central!

I made sure to pick a hotel that was close to the beach, close to the State Street Promenade, which is the big pedestrian shopping area blocked off to cars, and of course, close to my favorite part of town, the Funk Zone, where you’ll find all the cool restaurants, bars, cafes, and wine bars.

We stayed at The Franciscan Hotel, which I thought was the perfect mid-budget hotel for Santa Barbara. I’m definitely not someone who needs a luxury hotel all the time, but I do like when the hotel I’m staying at fits the vibe of the place.

So, when I was in Santa Barbara, I wanted somewhere with that classic California Spanish architecture, while still being affordable and in a good location.

The Franciscan Hotel basically ticked all those boxes. And we paid well under $200 per night, which for Santa Barbara was honestly a really good deal!

My Top Areas in Santa Barbara California

The Funk Zone

The area in Santa Barbara where I probably spent the most time during my stay was the Funk Zone. I know it’s a weird name for a neighborhood, but it’s awesome, believe me.

It’s located right behind the beach and next to downtown, so it’s super walkable, and it’s basically packed with cafes, restaurants, wine bars, breweries, cocktail bars, and everything else you could want.

I came here so many times during my trip. I’d come for coffee and breakfast at Dart Coffee or Helena Avenue Bakery, but I’d also come here in the evening to go to Topa Topa Brewing, grab pizza at Lucky Penny, or check out one of the many wine bars.

It’s definitely my favorite area in Santa Barbara to just be out and about, have fun, eat and drink, or meet people.

Santa Barbara Downtown

For most of my shopping, and I did quite a bit of shopping, I usually went to the downtown area. The heart of it is the State Street Promenade, which is basically an entire shopping street blocked off to cars.

Again, I loved this because it felt very European. It was super chill to just wander up and down the street, shop at little boutiques, grab lunch, and generally just see what’s around.

There’s also the Santa Barbara County Courthouse here, which is a beautiful piece of architecture, and I highly recommend coming to check it out while you’re in town.

East Beach

East Beach is where I really wanted to stay at the Santa Barbara Inn, but I just didn’t have the budget for it in the end. This area definitely feels a little more upscale.

It’s also a little quieter and further away from the action, but honestly, it’s not far at all. When I came here, I just walked along the beach, and it only took me about 20 minutes from the Funk Zone.

East Beach has loads of cool hotels, and the beach here also felt less crowded, so if I wanted a more resort-style or luxury hotel trip with a slightly more relaxing atmosphere, this is probably where I’d stay.

One little personal tip, though: definitely check out East Beach Tacos while you’re here. They’re my favorite tacos in Santa Barbara!

West Beach

West Beach has a bunch of my favorite hotels on this list, or at least hotels that are right around the West Beach area and towards the city center.

This is where you’ll find the harbor and the famous Brophy Bros. seafood restaurant, and the area feels a little quieter and more residential than the Funk Zone or downtown.

But the location is fantastic. It took me only about 10 minutes to walk from my hotel to downtown and around five minutes to get to the beach, so I really didn’t feel like I was missing out on anything by staying here.

And honestly, even though I love being right in the Funk Zone, this is probably the area I would pick for staying in Santa Barbara. Hotels like the Franciscan Hotel, Castillo Inn, and Inn by the Harbor are all fantastic options, and you’re still close enough to everything to walk pretty much everywhere.

My Favorite Hotels in Santa Barbara (From Luxury to Budget-Friendly)

1. The Franciscan Hotel (This Is Where I Stayed)

The Franciscan Hotel in Santa Barbara is the hotel we stayed at for all four nights that we were here. When I chose this place, I had a few requirements, starting with affordability. Santa Barbara can be hella expensive, so I wanted to get the best value for my money.

But I also wanted to be in a good location, ideally within walking distance of the beach, downtown, and the Funk Zone. And then, sue me, but I also wanted to stay somewhere pretty, with that typical Spanish Revival architecture. The Franciscan definitely ticked all those boxes for me.

On top of that, there were a few other things I really loved. The staff were so friendly to us and gave us a bunch of great food recommendations for Santa Barbara. They also had free bike rentals, which was awesome, and we definitely made use of those. And then there was the included breakfast, which was honestly really good.

The rooms were fairly basic, so don’t expect anything super fancy or luxurious. But the beds were really comfortable, and it was totally fine for us, especially since I spent most of my days out and about exploring Santa Barbara anyway.

So, if you’re looking for a well-located, reasonably priced hotel in Santa Barbara, this is definitely one I’d recommend. It worked really well for us.

2. Santa Barbara Inn (Luxury Hotel in Santa Barbara)

The Santa Barbara Inn is, in my opinion, THE hotel in Santa Barbara. It’s just kind of iconic and beautiful.

My friend who grew up in Santa Barbara told me, “You have to stay here when you come. It’s awesome.” Well, yeah, the price tag was awesome too, which is why I didn’t end up staying here. But whenever I come back to Santa Barbara, I’m definitely making sure I bring a bigger budget so I can stay here!

The Santa Barbara Inn is kind of like a boutique hotel, but it also has a little bit of a resort feel. The location is incredible, right by the beach, and it has a beautiful pool area, an amazing bar and restaurant, and honestly, the whole aesthetic is just so Santa Barbara.

You’ve got the Spanish-style red roofs, whitewashed walls, palm trees, and that typical California coastal atmosphere. It’s just a stunning property.

So, if you’re looking for a more upscale Santa Barbara experience, this is the one!

3. The Milo (Best Boutique Hotel in Santa Barbara)

The best boutique hotel in Santa Barbara has to be The Milo. It’s just so cute and beautiful, and it’s definitely up on my list of hotels I want to stay at the next time I’m around.

The location is right by the beach, which is incredible, and the whole property has been newly renovated. They have large rooms, a pool, and bike rentals, which, again, is such a fun way to get around Santa Barbara. There’s just something about biking along the beach here that I absolutely love.

The vibe is definitely a little more upscale, but at the same time, it still feels super intimate. So, if I were visiting Santa Barbara for a romantic weekend getaway as a couple, this is definitely somewhere I’d consider staying.

4. The Eagle Inn

If I had to describe The Eagle Inn in a few words, I’d say traditional, upscale, and authentic.

It’s one of the oldest bed and breakfasts and hotels in Santa Barbara, and it has all the charm and character you’d expect from a historic property. The building itself is almost 100 years old, and it’s just stunning.

It’s basically exactly what I imagine when I think of California: red roofs, white walls, palm trees, the whole shebang.

The interior is definitely more old-school, so don’t expect something super modern, but it’s cozy, upscale, and definitely a more elevated property.

The location here is amazing too. It’s just around the corner from where I stayed in Santa Barbara, so you can easily reach downtown, the Funk Zone, and the beach on foot, which is always a big bonus in my book.

5. Brisas Del Mar Inn at the Beach

Brisas Del Mar Inn at the Beach is another super cool mid-range and more affordable option in a fantastic location.

For a start, the property looks gorgeous. It’s full-on Spanish Revival, which, as you might be able to tell by now, I absolutely love. The hotel also has bike rentals available and a really pretty pool area, so especially if you’re traveling with kids, I could see this being a great option.

But there’s one thing I haven’t mentioned yet that I really appreciate about this hotel: free parking.

I don’t get the whole thing where I’m paying money for a hotel room and then I have to pay another $60 a day just to park my car there. It feels like such a rip-off. That’s why I often look for hotels that include free parking, and Brisas Del Mar is one of those.

So, if you’re driving to Santa Barbara and want a reasonably priced hotel with a great location and free parking, this one is definitely worth looking at.

6. Castillo Inn at the Beach

Castillo Inn at the Beach is definitely one of the best budget-friendly options in Santa Barbara, especially if you also want a great location.

I actually thought about staying here at the beginning, but then I thought, “okay, I’ll treat myself a little” and went for something a bit more elevated instead.

But if you’re looking for a great location and a no-frills room where you can stay without completely blowing your budget, Castillo Inn is totally fine. You’re close to the beach and still within easy walking distance of everything, which is really what I’d be looking for at this price point.

7. Orange Tree Inn (Best Cheap Hotel in Santa Barbara)

The cheapest option on my list is Orange Tree Inn, which, from all the research I’ve done, is one of the cheapest places to stay in Santa Barbara that still looks like a decent option.

I’m not going to lie to you, it’s not the most luxurious hotel. It’s fairly basic, but you do get a pool and spacious rooms, and if you’re doing a longer road trip through California, for instance, this could be a great way to keep your accommodation costs a little lower.

The location isn’t super central, but if you have a car, you’ll be down in the Funk Zone or by the beach in no time. So, if price is your number one priority, I’d definitely take a look at Orange Tree Inn.

What is the best luxury hotel in Santa Barbara?

There are, of course, a bunch of luxury hotels in Santa Barbara. Hyatt Santa Barbara and Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore Santa Barbara are both super luxurious, but I personally like hotels with a little more character and uniqueness.

So, I’d go with the Santa Barbara Inn. It’s not as crazy luxurious, but it’s definitely upscale, really beautiful, and has so much of that classic Santa Barbara style.

When is the best time to visit Santa Barbara?

I’d say late summer, around July, August, or September, is probably the best time. By then, the June Gloom is usually over, the weather is warm with mild temperatures, and you’ve got those beautiful blue-sky days that are perfect for sitting on a patio, hanging out at the beach, or spending some time by the pool.

Is Santa Barbara worth visiting?

Absolutely! Santa Barbara is one of my favorite coastal towns in California. There isn’t a ton to do in terms of actual activities and attractions, but the whole beach, wine, food, and vineyard scene around Santa Barbara is just amazing.

Is Santa Barbara expensive?

I’ll be honest, yes, I did think it was expensive. When I visited Santa Barbara, I paid way more for my hotel here than pretty much anywhere else in California.

Food and everything else, however, felt more on par with other places we visited. So, for me, accommodation was definitely where I noticed the higher prices the most.

What is the best hotel in Santa Barbara?

Well, I think the Santa Barbara Inn is the best hotel in Santa Barbara because it’s just so upscale and beautiful. However, I stayed at the Franciscan Hotel, and I thought it was a really great budget-friendly option with a fantastic location.

Final Thoughts on the Best Hotels and Areas in Santa Barbara

There really isn’t that much to say here because Santa Barbara is fairly small, and as a visitor, there aren’t that many different areas you need to consider.

My biggest piece of advice is simply to stay somewhere reasonably close to downtown, the Funk Zone, and the beach. If you do that, you’ll be in a great location for pretty much everything you’ll want to do during your trip.

And honestly, all the hotels and areas I’ve mentioned in this guide do that, so if one of them sounds good to you, you really can’t go too wrong with booking it.
