We spent a weekend here exploring all the little streets, restaurants, cafes and shops, but we also used Carmel as a base for some really cool activities around the area.

Looking back, I’m suuuper glad we picked a hotel that was not only really cute, but also let us explore Carmel on foot while still being a great base for exploring the surrounding area.

Where to Stay in Carmel-by-the-Sea? My Experience

The first thing I noticed when we arrived in Carmel-by-the-Sea was just how small the town is. Pretty much everything, including the beach, was within walking distance. We specifically wanted to stay somewhere central so we could walk from our hotel to the restaurants, cafes, shops and beach without having to think about the car.

We stayed at Normandy Inn, which was perfect for our visit. The hotel itself was super cute and looked like one of those fairytale buildings you see all over Carmel, and the location couldn’t have been better.

However, it only took me the better part of a day to explore pretty much all of Carmel on foot, and after that, I was kinda done with the town itself. So from then on, we mainly used our hotel as a base to explore the surrounding area.

We drove the famous 17-Mile Drive, went wine tasting in Carmel Valley, and spent some time hiking in Big Sur.

Looking back, staying at Normandy Inn was pretty much perfect for us. We could explore Carmel-by-the-Sea on foot, but we also had a great base for getting out and seeing more of the area with our rental car.

The Best Areas to Stay in Carmel-by-the-Sea

Village Center & Ocean Avenue

We stayed in the village center, and it was by far the best decision we made. I mean, the whole center, where you’ll find all those cute houses, is so wonderfully walkable, with little alleyways, restaurants, cafes and shops everywhere. We could even walk straight down to the beach!

It makes no sense to me to stay further away and then have to drive into town every morning just to start exploring on foot. Nah, I want to walk straight out of my hotel and explore everything from there. That’s a vacation for me!

South Carmel / Mission District

South Carmel and the area around the mission are much more residential and quiet. However, if you don’t mind a roughly 20-minute walk, you can still reach the town center on foot.

I’d totally consider staying here if I were traveling with a group of friends or my family. There are quite a few really nice vacation rentals with two to four bedrooms, cute decor and amazing views, which makes this area a good option if you want a little more space.

One of my favorite vacation rentals I came across while researching was 3945 SeaDaze. It looked super cute and would be a great option if you’re looking for a larger place to stay.

Carmel Valley

Just inland from Carmel-by-the-Sea is Carmel Valley, where we also spent a few nights during our trip. It’s such a beautiful area, especially if you’d rather trade the seaside town atmosphere for vineyards and wine country.

You’ll find some beautiful Airbnb properties, vacation rentals, hotels and ranches out here, so there are plenty of options if you want something a little different from staying right by the coast.

The drive from Carmel Valley to the coast took us around 30 minutes, which honestly wasn’t too bad. And in return, you’re right by some gorgeous vineyards and wineries. Folktale Winery was our favorite in the area, so I’d definitely recommend checking it out if you’re staying nearby.

My 7 Favorite Hotels in Carmel-by-the-Sea

1. Normandy Inn // This is Where We Stayed in Carmel

Our number one requirement when we were looking for a hotel here in Carmel was a good location. Since I grew up in Europe, I’m just used to being able to walk everywhere, guys! So whenever I can, I want to stay right in the middle of everything, where I can walk to restaurants, coffee shops and even the beach.

Based on that, we picked Normandy Inn, which is literally right on Ocean Avenue, the main street in town. The hotel itself is sooo cute and looks just like the other fairytale-style buildings around Carmel. The rooms and decor are really lovely too.

Like pretty much everything else in Carmel, I thought it was a little pricey for what it was, but I guess that’s California for you. However, between the decor, the amazing staff, the good breakfast and the location, I’d definitely recommend this place for a one- or two-night weekend stay.

They even have a pool, although unfortunately, it was a little too cold for us to use it!

2. La Playa Hotel // Best Luxury Hotel in Carmel-by-the-Sea

I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that La Playa Hotel is by faaaaaaar the most beautiful and luxurious hotel in Carmel-by-the-Sea.

The whole place is stunning, with its Spanish Revival architecture, gorgeous gardens and beautiful lobby. For a second, I genuinely felt like I was back in Italy!

I obviously didn’t stay here myself for very obvious reasons (cough, cough… budget), but I did come here one evening for drinks at their in-house cocktail bar, Bud’s. The bar is beautiful and has a really nice terrace overlooking the gardens, so here’s a little tip: even if you’re not staying here, I’d definitely stop by for a cocktail to check out the hotel.

So, if you’re visiting Carmel and want to stay somewhere special and unique, maybe for a celebration or a special occasion where you’re happy to splurge a little, La Playa Hotel is definitely the place I’d look at first.

3. Candle Light Inn // My Favorite Hotel if you have a Car

Candle Light Inn was actually the hotel I originally wanted to book for our weekend in Carmel, but unfortunately, it was already fully booked.

I guess technically it’s a motel, since there’s a large parking area and the rooms face outward, but that doesn’t really matter because the place is so beautifully designed and cozy. It fits right into Carmel-by-the-Sea with its cute decor, and the rooms are spacious. There’s even a really nice fire pit right in the middle of the property.

I think this is one of the best places to stay if you’re traveling by car or doing a California road trip, especially because parking is included. That’s actually one of the main reasons I wanted to stay here in the first place!

4. The Quail Lodge

The Quail Lodge is one of the properties on my list that’s actually in Carmel Valley rather than Carmel-by-the-Sea. This is something I’d totally consider for myself if I wanted a quieter weekend away from the coast.

The property is stunning, with a golf course, a huge pool and even its own little lake. It definitely feels more like a proper getaway where you can spend time enjoying the property itself rather than just using your hotel as somewhere to sleep.

I also really like the location. It takes around 30 minutes to drive to the beach or down toward Big Sur, and there are loads of wineries and vineyards just 10 minutes away.

So if you’re looking for a quieter stay with plenty of space, a beautiful setting and easy access to the wine country, The Quail Lodge is definitely worth checking out.

5. Cypress Inn Carmel-by-the-Sea

Cypress Inn is probably one of the hotels in Carmel with the most character. It has a very old-school, upscale feel, almost a little royal in a way. Personally, the design isn’t entirely my style, but I know plenty of people love that kind of atmosphere, and I can definitely see the appeal.

The property itself is beautiful, and the location is fantastic. You can walk pretty much anywhere in town from here, including the beach, so you really don’t need to worry about getting in the car every time you want to go somewhere.

And the best part is, It’s pet-friendly!

If you’re traveling with your dog and want to stay right in the center of Carmel while still being able to walk to the beach, Cypress Inn is definitely a great option.

6. L’Auberge Carmel

L’Auberge Carmel pretty much gives you that European feeling again. As the name already suggests, the whole place feels like somewhere you’d find in France or elsewhere in Europe. I guess that’s just the vibe of Carmel-by-the-Sea!

L’Auberge Carmel is one of the luxury hotels in town, and this one definitely feels a little extra, almost like a French chalet. The building is beautifully designed and looks a little like a castle, but in a really elegant way rather than anything tacky. The rooms look super upscale, and the service is supposed to be amazing too.

So if you’re looking for a more luxurious stay in Carmel and want something that feels a little more special, L’Auberge Carmel is definitely worth checking out.

7. Carmel Valley Ranch

And lastly, we have another property that’s actually in Carmel Valley rather than Carmel-by-the-Sea: Carmel Valley Ranch. We stayed here for one night after visiting Carmel-by-the-Sea because we’d loved the valley so much, especially all the wineries, that we decided to spend a night out here too.

I’m just such a sucker for secluded and unique getaways, so this place was perfect for me. We had incredible views from our balcony, and we even had a little bathtub out there. It was honestly amazing!

After a few days of hiking and exploring around Carmel, it was exactly what we needed. The whole place felt super relaxing, with a golf course, loads of tennis courts, a pool and even a vineyard right on the property.

It felt very much like a California countryside getaway, if that makes sense. So if you want to spend a couple of nights somewhere peaceful and a little more secluded, rather than right in the middle of Carmel-by-the-Sea, I’d definitely consider Carmel Valley Ranch.
