How Many Days in Carmel-by-the-Sea Do You Need? My Quick Answer
So first things first, Carmel-by-the-Sea is really beautiful. I absolutely loved the fairytale-like European look, with all the cute cottages, little alleyways and everything else around the town center. However, it’s also very small, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but there honestly isn’t a ton to do in Carmel itself.
On our first day, we spent the morning and part of the afternoon wandering around the town center, checking out the shops, cafes, restaurants and all the cute little alleyways. Afterwards, we headed down to the beach for a walk, and by then, we’d pretty much seen all of Carmel-by-the-Sea.
Of course, if you’re the type of person who just wants to relax on the beach, enjoy a nice hotel and stroll around town, you could easily spend a whole weekend here. But that’s just not really me!
For the next two days, we ended up changing our plans a little and using Carmel more as a base to explore the surrounding area. We drove the famous 17-Mile Drive, went wine tasting in Carmel Valley, and even headed down to Big Sur for some hiking.
So yes, you can definitely spend longer in Carmel-by-the-Sea. You just have to know what you want to do while you’re here!

1. Day Trip to Carmel-by-the-Sea
I’ve met so many people during my travels, including friends of mine, who visited Carmel-by-the-Sea as a day trip or even just for half a day. And honestly, that makes a lot of sense because there are so many other places to visit around here, including Monterey, Carmel Valley, Big Sur and even Santa Cruz.
Carmel is super easy to combine with some of these places, too. We actually started our day in Monterey, where we went whale watching, explored the pier and had some clam chowder. Afterwards, we drove the famous 17-Mile Drive down to Carmel and spent the rest of the day exploring the town. So yes, you can absolutely do all of that in one day!
Of course, you won’t have much time for a proper beach day or to relax at a nice hotel, but if your main goal is to just see the cute town of Carmel-by-the-Sea and check out all the beautiful architecture, a day trip is totally fine.

2. Focus ONLY on Carmel-by-the-Sea (1–2 Nights)
If you’re planning a typical weekend in Carmel-by-the-Sea, I’d say one or two nights is a really good amount of time. That’s basically what we did, and I thought it worked out really well.
We stayed at Normandy Inn, right in the center of Carmel, which meant we could walk pretty much everywhere. We spent a full day exploring the cute little alleyways, checking out shops and cafes, and walking down to Carmel Beach. It was so nice not having to get in the car every time we wanted to go somewhere.
Then, on our other days, we explored more of the surrounding area. There’s so much to do around Carmel that you’ll probably have to pick and choose a little if you’re only staying for one or two nights.
If you’re into the outdoors and want to be more active, I’d definitely head down to Big Sur or visit Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, which is an incredible spot for hiking and spotting wildlife.
If you’d rather do something a little more upscale and relaxing, I’d recommend heading into Carmel Valley and visiting Folktale Winery. We had such a great time here. The property is beautiful, and they have wine tastings, food and live music, so it’s a really fun way to spend an afternoon.

3. Explore MORE of the Surrounding Area (3–4 Nights)
If you’ve got a little more time, say three or four nights, then I’d definitely try to fit in a bit of everything.
I’d start by spending at least one full day just enjoying Carmel itself. Go shopping at the cute little boutiques, have a nice lunch at Nora’s Carmel (I loved their carbonara, so definitely order that!), and leave yourself some time to relax at your hotel or head down to Carmel Beach.
Then you’ve got plenty of options for the other days.
If you’re into hiking, I’d recommend heading down to Big Sur. We did the Timber Tops Trail and Pfeiffer Falls Trail, both further down Highway 1, but still doable as day trips from Carmel.
We also went whale watching from Monterey, which was just absolutely incredible. The California coast is for sure one of the best places I’ve experienced whale watching, so I’d definitely recommend fitting that into your trip if you get the chance.
And then, of course, there’s wine tasting in Carmel Valley, or you could even head up to Santa Cruz for the day, check out the pier and maybe go surfing for a bit.
There are so many cool places around Carmel that you could easily spend several days here without running out of things to do. You just have to decide whether you want your trip to be more about exploring, hiking and day trips, or whether you’d rather slow down a little and enjoy Carmel itself.
