How Many Days in Palm Springs Do You Actually Need: My Perfect Weekend in 2026

My whole weekend in Palm Springs was pretty jam-packed because I wanted to make the most of it. I just didn’t know when I’d be back, so I figured I might as well see as much as I could while I was there.

I spent a full 3 days in Palm Springs, and I could’ve easily stayed another day. Looking back, though, I also kind of wish I’d spent a little more time doing absolutely nothing by the pool, drinking cocktails and just enjoying the hotel.

I wanted to explore quite a bit of the surrounding nature, which took up a good amount of time. But if you mainly want to hang out downtown, eat good food, relax by the pool and see all the iconic mid-century architecture, then you can have a great time with a much slower itinerary.

So I figured I’d put together this quick little guide on how many days in Palm Springs you actually need, including what I did with my 3 days and how I’d plan the trip differently depending on what kind of vacation you’re looking for.

How Many Days in Palm Springs Do You Need – My Quick Answer

I’ll do my best to give you a quick answer here, but honestly, the best answer I can give you is that it depends entirely on what you want to do.

For starters, I think Palm Springs is a perfect weekend getaway. If you want to arrive Friday and leave Sunday night, that works really well. You’ll have plenty of time to explore Palm Springs, see the iconic mid-century architecture, enjoy your hotel a little bit, and then head downtown for dinner and drinks.

However, as soon as you start adding things like Joshua Tree National Park, hiking in Indian Canyons, riding the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, and exploring more of the surrounding desert, you’ll definitely want to give yourself a little more time.

As a general rule of thumb, I think 3–4 FULL days in Palm Springs is pretty much perfect. That gives you enough time to see the main highlights without having to rush around, and then you can always add a few extra days if you want more time to enjoy your hotel pool, play some golf, or just hang out and do absolutely nothing.

What Kind of Palm Springs Trip Do You Want?

A Relaxing Palm Springs Weekend

I’m a huge supporter of coming to Palm Springs literally just for a short weekend trip to escape the cooler temperatures along the California coast. It’s only around a three-hour drive from Santa Barbara, for example, so it’s super easy to come here on a Friday and head back Sunday.

If that means I get to enjoy the warm desert temperatures, lay by the pool and drink cocktails all weekend, then I’m totally in.

For a relaxing weekend like this, 2.5–3 days actually works really well. That gives you plenty of time to be lazy, hang out by the pool and enjoy your hotel, while still having enough time to explore downtown, maybe visit the Palm Springs Art Museum, and rent a bike to ride around the iconic mid-century neighborhoods in Vista Las Palmas.

For a weekend like this, I’d definitely make sure to book a hotel that you actually enjoy staying at, because you’ll probably be spending quite a bit of time there. We stayed at The Skylark Palm Springs, which was fantastic for this kind of trip.

Exploring Palm Springs & More

Palm Springs obviously has a lot more to offer than just drinking by the pool all day. Don’t get me wrong, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that and I loved doing it too, but there are some really cool activities around here if you want to be a little more adventurous.

If you want to explore Indian Canyons, like we did with the Murray Canyon Trail, ride the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway up toward Mount San Jacinto, and still have some time for nice pool days and exploring Palm Springs itself, I’d probably look closer to 3–4 days.

That gives you enough time to actually do some of the bigger activities without turning the entire trip into one giant checklist.

Palm Springs + Joshua Tree National Park

And if you want all of the above, a cool, vibey hotel, plenty of pool time, exploring Palm Springs, hiking and other activities, but you also want to add Joshua Tree National Park, then my friend, you can easily spend 4–6 days in the area depending on how much you want to see.

Joshua Tree is close enough to Palm Springs to make for a very easy day trip, so if you’re short on time, you can absolutely leave early in the morning, drive over and spend the day exploring the national park yourself.

Depending on how much hiking you want to do, you could make Joshua Tree a full-day trip and head back to Palm Springs that evening. But you could also easily spend two full days around Joshua Tree and stay somewhere closer to the park.

And honestly, whenever I do something like this, I like to make a whole thing out of it.

There are some incredible and super unique accommodations around Joshua Tree, and I’d actually consider staying there for at least one, maybe even two nights. Places like Estrella Perdida and Sacred Sands have these super cool desert-ish designs and settings, outdoor bathtubs and incredible views.

So if you have the time, I’d rather turn Joshua Tree into its own little part of the trip instead of treating it as just another box to tick off on a day trip.

FAQs About How Long Should I Stay in Palm Springs

Is Palm Springs Worth Visiting?

Yes, absolutely! Palm Springs was actually one of my favorite places I visited in California, mainly because it’s just so unique and quirky. It feels completely different from pretty much everywhere else I visited during our road trip.

How Many Nights Should I Stay in Palm Springs?

That entirely depends on what you’re looking for. We spent 3 nights in Palm Springs, which I thought was pretty much perfect. It gave us enough time to explore the city, relax by the pool and also fit in some of the bigger activities around the area.

Is Palm Springs Expensive to Visit?

I personally didn’t think so. Of course, you’re still in California, so it’s not exactly going to be a super cheap destination, but I found Palm Springs to be noticeably cheaper than many of the other places we visited.

Can I Spend a Weekend in Palm Springs?

Hell yeah, you can!

I actually think Palm Springs is perfect for a weekend trip, especially during the winter. When much of the rest of the country is dealing with cold temperatures, Palm Springs can still have beautiful sunny weather and, yes, potentially even pool weather in January.

What Is There to Do in Palm Springs?

Palm Springs has some really cool activities, from biking around the iconic mid-century modern neighborhoods to hiking in Indian Canyons and taking a day trip to Joshua Tree National Park. You can also visit the Palm Springs Art Museum or ride the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway.

Final Thoughts on How Many Days You Need in Palm Springs

I can tell you from experience that Palm Springs works as pretty much whatever kind of trip you want it to be.

We did a 3-day weekend here that was fairly jam-packed, and looking back, I definitely wish I’d had a little more time to just sit by the pool and drink cocktails. But that’s also the beauty of Palm Springs: you can make it as busy or as lazy as you want.

You could come here for a quick little relaxing weekend, barely do anything, stay at a cool hotel, eat at some great restaurants and just enjoy the whole Palm Springs vibe. I’m a huge fan of that kind of trip.

Or, if you really want to go all out, you could combine Palm Springs with an overnight or two in Joshua Tree National Park and easily turn the whole thing into a 4–6 day trip.

I hope this guide on how many days in Palm Springs you actually need gave you a good idea of how to plan your next trip and, more importantly, how much time you’ll actually want to give yourself.
