Where to See Cool Houses in Palm Springs California: My Favorite Spots for Mid-Century Homes 2026
One of the main reasons I even wanted to come to Palm Springs in the first place was, of course, the incredible architecture here, specifically all those super cool mid-century modern houses.
You know the ones with weird geometric shapes, flat roofs, huge windows and the colorful pink or pastel doors? I’m sure you’ve seen pictures of them before!
During the whole weekend we spent in Palm Springs, I kinda made it my mission to find the coolest houses and best streets to see them. We spent a good amount of time riding our bikes around, stopping whenever I saw a house I liked and taking way too many pictures.
However, I also found that it was actually not that easy to figure out exactly where to look for them. At least when I was doing my own research, I couldn’t really find one guide that made it super obvious which neighborhoods and streets were worth checking out.
So, I figured I’d put together my own guide on where to find the coolest mid-century modern homes and houses in Palm Springs, including the neighborhoods and streets where I had the best luck.

Where to See Cool Houses in Palm Springs – My Personal Experience
We spent a whole weekend in Palm Springs in the middle of July, so it was brutally hot. Since we wanted to take the bikes out and actually explore the neighborhoods, we had to get up really early in the morning to beat the heat.
And looking back, I kinda liked it. We could grab a coffee, get on our bikes and explore Palm Springs before the heat really kicked in. It was actually way nicer than just driving around in a car, because we could take our time, stop whenever we saw a cool house and actually explore the neighborhoods.
We stayed at the Skylark Palm Springs, which was already a super cute and vibey hotel, but the manager was also a local and was incredibly helpful. He gave us some great recommendations for where to go if we wanted to see the coolest houses, which definitely saved us a lot of time trying to figure it out ourselves.
I ended up liking Vista Las Palmas, which was literally just around the corner from our hotel, and the Indian Canyons neighborhood around the Indian Canyons Golf Resort the most.
Those two areas were just gorgeous, with the mountains in the background, endless palm trees, perfectly maintained front yards and, of course, a bunch of ridiculously cool houses. We saw everything from butterfly roofs and pink pastel doors to old-school cars parked in driveways.

Everything You Need to Know About the Mid-Century Modern Architecture in Palm Springs
The Architecture in Palm Springs Is Desert Modernism
One thing I learned while I was here, shoutout to the hotel manager at The Skylark again, is that the architecture in Palm Springs is known as Desert Modernism.
It’s basically a local take on mid-century modern architecture that became popular around the 1940s through the 1960s, and you can see it all over Palm Springs. Some of the things I noticed everywhere were the colorful pink and pastel doors, those iconic butterfly roofs, huge windows and all the cool geometric shapes.
Be Mindful: These Are People’s Homes!
The great thing about us visiting in July was that Palm Springs was basically dead, and a lot of the people who own houses here apparently only come during the winter when the weather is nicer. So when we visited, a huge number of the houses were empty, and we didn’t really have to worry about disturbing anyone while riding around the neighborhoods.
However, if you’re visiting during peak season, just remember that these are still people’s actual homes.
So please be respectful, don’t walk onto someone’s property just to get a picture, and don’t stand outside someone’s front door taking photos.
Rent a Bicycle to Get Around
Yes, we obviously also had a rental car to get to Palm Springs in the first place, but if you want to explore the iconic neighborhoods, I highly recommend getting a rental bike.
Our hotel, The Skylark, had free rental bikes, which was awesome, and it was also so much more fun exploring the neighborhoods that way. We could take our time, enjoy the views and the houses, and easily stop whenever we wanted to take a picture.
It also just felt like a much better way to experience Palm Springs than driving from one street to the next. You’re outside, you can actually look around while you’re riding, and you’re much more flexible about where you stop.
You Can Actually Stay at the Pink Door House, Villa Sierra
One of the most famous houses in Palm Springs is the pink door house, and I’ve heard that the owner got pretty fed up with tourists constantly coming up to the property to take pictures.
And to be fair, I kinda do understand that. Imagine trying to live your normal life while tourists are constantly standing outside your house because they saw it on Instagram.
Apparently nowadays you can actually book Villa Sierra as a vacation rental, which means you can experience this iconic Palm Springs house without treating someone’s private home like a tourist attraction.

My Favorite Neighborhoods to See Mid-Century Modern Houses
1. Vista Las Palmas // My Favorite part of Palm Springs
My favorite area to see gorgeous houses in Palm Springs was definitely Vista Las Palmas. The cool thing is that it was literally only about a 3-minute bike ride from our hotel, The Skylark, so we had no problem getting here early in the morning before it got too hot.
I’m going to try to be as helpful as I can here because I know just saying “go to Vista Las Palmas” isn’t necessarily that useful when you’re actually trying to figure out where to start.
We started on W Stevens Rd and then headed down N Rose Ave, from where we basically explored all the little side streets and cul-de-sacs before eventually making our way down to W Crescent Dr. So, if you want to explore the area yourself, you can pretty much check out all the streets between W Stevens Rd to the north and W Crescent Dr to the south.
There are so many cool houses around here, and this is probably where I had the most fun just riding around and looking at architecture.
And lastly, we got really lucky while we were here and bumped into one of the locals who lives in Vista Las Palmas. He had just arrived in one of his really cool old-school cars and was nice enough to let us take some pictures in front of it, which was awesome.

2. Indian Canyons Neighborhood (Twin Palms)
The second neighborhood on my list is the Indian Canyons neighborhood, which doesn’t really show up under that name on Google Maps. I’m basically talking about the neighborhoods around the Indian Canyons Golf Resort on the southern side of Palm Springs.
This area was at least as cool as Vista Las Palmas, and it’s actually where we found the famous pink-door house, Villa Sierra. If you want to find it yourself, you can just type “Villa Sierra” into Google Maps and it should come up.
The only downside for us was that it was quite a bit farther from our hotel, so we decided to drive here rather than bike. But if you’re staying somewhere closer to this part of Palm Springs, I’d definitely recommend exploring the neighborhood by bicycle too. It’s such a fun way to take your time and actually look at all the houses.
And while you’re here, I’d also recommend checking out Moorten Botanical Garden. It’s basically right around the corner from the neighborhood and is a really cool place to see all kinds of local cacti and succulents. They even have tortoises which was soooo cool!

3. The Movie Colony (Not My Favorite)
And even though it’s definitely not my favorite place on this list, I still wanted to include The Movie Colony because it’s interesting to drive through and has a lot of Hollywood history behind it.
The thing about this neighborhood is that many of the homes have been owned by famous Hollywood celebs, including Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe. But that also means a lot of the houses are hidden behind huge hedges, walls and gates, so you can’t really see the architecture nearly as well as you can in Vista Las Palmas or Indian Canyons.
There is one really random house here that I’d definitely recommend stopping by, though: the Robolights house. It’s basically fully covered in massive art installations made from recycled and salvaged materials, including all kinds of crazy-looking robots, dinosaurs and other sculptures.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Palm Springs?
If you’re mainly looking at the weather, I’d say January through April is probably the best time to visit, especially if you’re trying to escape a cold winter somewhere else.

Where Should I Stay in Palm Springs, California?
We stayed at The Skylark, which was an incredibly vibey, newly renovated motel in Palm Springs. They have a pool, a hot tub and free bike rentals, which was perfect for what we wanted to do.

Final Thoughts on Where to See Mid-Century Modern Homes in Palm Springs
I had such a fun time in Palm Springs just being on the hunt for the coolest houses and taking pictures of them. I really think it helped a lot that we were there in July, though, because so many of the people who own these houses apparently weren’t around.
I’ll be honest, I did feel a little awkward sometimes taking pictures of people’s homes. I mean, imagine looking out your window and seeing some random tourist standing across the street taking pictures of your house. I hope I didn’t bother anyone!
I also really loved having bicycles for this. It made the whole experience 10 times better because we could just cruise around the neighborhoods, stop whenever we saw something cool, and actually take our time looking at everything.
