Is San Luis Obispo Worth Visiting? My Honest Review in 2026

One of the cutest little towns in California has got to be San Luis Obispo, or SLO as the locals call it.

I just spent a whole weekend in this cute little town, and between the historic city center, awesome restaurants and cafes, and all the super cool vineyards nearby, it kinda had everything I want from a California weekend trip.

To give you guys a better idea of what SLO is actually about, I’ve put together this guide on is San Luis Obispo worth visiting?, including what I liked most about it, what I didn’t like so much, and some of my favorite things to do while I was here.

Is San Luis Obispo Worth Visiting? My Quick Answer

I know not everybody always wants to read through this whole guide, so I figured I’d give you the quick answer right here: yes, 100% it’s worth visiting.

I spent an amazing weekend here, and there were so many things about SLO that I appreciated, especially compared to some of the other places I visited in California. San Luis Obispo felt way less touristy and much quieter, it has a bunch of really cute hotels, and overall, I just loved how walkable it is.

Especially around the beautiful historic town center, I could’ve wandered around for days, popping into random restaurants and cafes and just enjoying the atmosphere.

My highlight was probably the wine country around San Luis Obispo, especially Edna Valley, which is just south of town. There are so many amazing wineries around here, and I tried quite a few of them during my weekend.

So if you’re into wine, good food, cute towns and that laid-back California vibe, I think SLO is definitely a great place to visit.

What I Loved About San Luis Obispo (SLO)

Historic Charm

I absolutely loved all the historic charm and architecture in San Luis Obispo, especially around the historic old town. It made it so much fun to just wander around and explore.

San Luis Obispo was founded around Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, which was established in the 18th century, and you can definitely still feel that history around town. Speaking of the mission, I also think it’s absolutely worth visiting. It’s actually one of my favorite missions I’ve seen in California!

Walkability

Since I was born and raised in Europe, naturally, I’m a huge fan of a walkable city. We specifically chose a hotel right in the center of San Luis Obispo so we could walk pretty much everywhere.

We could walk from our hotel to go shopping, visit multiple cafes and restaurants, wander around the old town, and even walk to the mission. Not having to get in the car every time we wanted to go somewhere was honestly so nice.

Wine Country

I love visiting vineyards, and I already did quite a bit of that when we were in Santa Barbara, but of course, I had to visit a few more around San Luis Obispo.

A few of the wineries we went to were Tolosa Winery, Sextant Winery and La Lomita Wines. For La Lomita, you do have to book a tasting in advance because they only do tastings by appointment, but it was definitely worth it.

Cute Boutique Hotels

I also loved all the cute little boutique hotels in San Luis Obispo, especially the ones around the historic old town.

We stayed at the Garden Street Inn, which is a super cute little B&B and was perfect for our weekend. But the Granada Hotel & Bistro also looks incredible, and I’m pretty sure that next time I’m in SLO, I’ll be staying there.

Awesome Cafe & Restaurant Scene

San Luis Obispo has such a small but fantastic cafe, coffee shop and restaurant scene, and pretty much all of it was within walking distance of our hotel, which made it even better.

I absolutely loved Scout Coffee and Linnaea’s Cafe, but the real highlight for me was Kiko. We had some absolutely incredible Peruvian food there, and I’m not exaggerating when I say it was probably the best Peruvian food I’ve had in the USA.

What I Didn’t Like About San Luis Obispo

Hotel Prices Can Be Expensive

I know it’s obviously very much up to you what you consider expensive, but I thought the hotel prices in San Luis Obispo were quite steep.

After I’d been to Santa Barbara, which I already knew was a pretty expensive place, I thought, “Oh, San Luis Obispo is surely going to be a little cheaper.” Well, at least when it came to accommodation, that wasn’t really the case.

Especially because I wanted to stay close to the center, I still ended up spending more than $200 per night for our hotel room, which I thought was quite a lot for a smaller town like SLO.

SLO Is Not on the Ocean

I KNOW, I KNOW. Duh, it’s not by the ocean!

And obviously, I knew that before I came here, so no, it’s definitely not a deal breaker or anything. But my whole California road trip was so coast-heavy. We went to San Francisco, Santa Cruz, Big Sur, Santa Barbara, and even Lake Tahoe had a huge lake right there, so I kinda missed being on the water while I was in SLO.

But honestly, I feel like this is a very me problem. If you’re not obsessed with being near the ocean like I am, then you probably won’t care about this one at all.

My Favorite Things to Do in SLO

1. Visit Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa

A cultural must-do, at least from what I’ve been told, is visiting the mission here in San Luis Obispo. And I have to say, it was one of the prettiest missions I’ve been to in California and definitely worth the visit.

In case you don’t know what a mission is, these were religious outposts the Spanish built as part of their efforts to colonize California. There are 21 Spanish missions across California, and Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa is one of them.

2. Explore the Historic Old Town

I spent a lot of time just wandering around the historic old town, and I really loved seeing all the old buildings. It’s just so charming, and I’d usually be on the hunt for a good coffee shop in the mornings anyway, so it was fun to combine the two.

I’d highly recommend Scout Coffee and Linnaea’s Cafe if you’re looking for somewhere good to stop for coffee while exploring the area.

3. Enjoy a Wine Tasting

When you’re visiting SLO, heading out to one of the wineries for a wine tasting is a non-negotiable, at least for me!

I went to a few places myself that I really liked. For a very relaxed, no-fuss glass of wine, I really liked Sextant Wines, which has a really cute outdoor seating area. And for a more traditional tasting at an actual vineyard, we had a great time at Tolosa Winery.

4. Visit the Madonna Inn

One of the quirkiest hotels in all of California is probably the Madonna Inn, which is also definitely the pinkest hotel I’ve ever seen.

I unfortunately didn’t stay there myself, but if you’re up for something a little extra, you might absolutely love it. All the rooms are decorated completely over the top, there are waterfall urinals, they serve their famous pink champagne cake in the restaurant, and the whole place just has this super fun and eccentric vibe.

We just went here to take a few pictures, but looking back now, I honestly feel like I should’ve stayed here myself just for the experience!

Yes, it definitely is! In fact, I feel like if you’re looking for a cute little California town with lots of charm and history, and you also love a good winery or vineyard, then SLO is a fantastic alternative to Santa Barbara.

I visited in July, and I can tell you that it wasn’t necessarily the best time. It was kinda hot at times but also pretty overcast.

I’ve heard great things about September and October, though, which also happens to be a fantastic time to visit the vineyards around SLO during harvest season.

San Luis Obispo is known for its beautiful mission and super cute historic old town, but also for all the beautiful wineries and vineyards surrounding it, especially around Edna Valley.

There isn’t a crazy amount to do in SLO, but there’s definitely enough to fill a really nice weekend getaway. My favorite parts were exploring the historic old town, visiting the mission, and heading out to the wineries around San Luis Obispo.

All in all, I do think San Luis Obispo is such a fantastic little town to visit, especially for a weekend getaway.

We spent 3 full days here, and I thought it was a really romantic place for a little couples trip. We had some nice dinners and drinks in the old town, but we also loved getting out to the wineries and vineyards around San Luis Obispo.

And with all the cute little boutique hotels around town, I personally think SLO is just a really nice option for a relaxed couples getaway.
