Where to Stay in Morro Bay California: My 5 Top Hotels in 2026

One of my favorite little seaside towns that I’ve visited this past year in California was definitely Morro Bay.

I spent three full days here exploring the town, trying to spot all the wildlife and eating some amazing seafood pretty much every day.

Morro Bay is fairly small, so the number of hotels here isn’t huge, but there are definitely a few that I want to recommend, including the one I stayed at myself. Hopefully, this makes planning your upcoming trip a little easier!

Where to Stay in Morro Bay: My Experience

I had an amazing experience in Morro Bay. I visited as part of my one-month road trip down the California coast along Highway 1, so it was a fantastic place to stop between Big Sur and Santa Barbara.

For starters, I was really happy to see how affordable Morro Bay is, especially by California standards. I found quite a few really nice hotels for well under $100 per night, and I’m the type of person where if I find a good-value hotel, I’m totally fine with staying somewhere cheap.

I definitely don’t need to spend $200 a night on a hotel if I don’t have to!

So I ended up staying at the Harbor House Inn, which, for what I needed and wanted at the time, basically ticked all the boxes.

Since we were on a road trip, we had a car, and parking was included. The hotel had been fairly recently renovated, the rooms were really big, the beds were comfortable, and we even had a balcony.

On top of that, the location was perfect. It only took us about 3 minutes to walk to the waterfront, where we could spot sea lions and otters, visit some awesome seafood restaurants and just hang out by the water.

And all of that cost us around $75 per night including taxes, which I thought was an absolute steal!

There are, of course, more upscale and more expensive hotels around Morro Bay. I personally just didn’t need that for this trip, but if you’re looking for something a little nicer, I’ve also included some more upscale options in my list below.

My Quick Tips About Visiting Morro Bay

Best Location to Stay in Morro Bay

When I was looking for hotels in Morro Bay, one of the most important things for me was being able to walk to the waterfront, restaurants and bars.

For that, I’d recommend staying close to Morro Rock and ideally a little south of it. That’s where you’ll find the waterfront, also called the Embarcadero, with all the seafood restaurants, bars and shops. It’s also where you’ll find a lot of the otters and sea lions hanging out.

Where to See Otters in Morro Bay

In case you didn’t know, there’s a local group of sea otters living in Morro Bay, and they are just adorable.

From my experience, the two best places to see them are Morro Bay T Pier and a location literally called Sea Otter Heaven. We had really good luck at both places, so I’ll make sure to tag the Google Maps locations for you here.

My Favorite Seafood Restaurants in Morro Bay

I absolutely loved the calamari and popcorn shrimp at Giovanni’s Fish Market, which I can really highly recommend.

We also had some incredible oysters at Tognazzini’s right by the waterfront, and those are definitely my two favorite seafood restaurants in Morro Bay.

How Many Days in Morro Bay Do You Actually Need?

This does depend a little bit on what you want to do, but I’d recommend spending at least 2 full days in Morro Bay.

We did a whale-watching tour and also spent some time at Morro Bay State Park, and those activities took up a good chunk of our time. If you want to fit both of those into your trip without rushing around, I’d allocate a full day for each.

All in all, though, I think Morro Bay is fantastic for a weekend trip!

The Best Time to Visit Morro Bay

I’d say September and October are probably the best months to visit Morro Bay. It’s surprisingly warm around this time of year, you don’t have to deal with June Gloom and it’s also a great time to go whale watching.

The Best Places to Stay in Morro Bay California

1. Inn at Rose’s Landing // Best Luxury Hotel in Morro Bay

The most popular, iconic and also probably the most upscale hotel in Morro Bay is Inn at Rose’s Landing.

I really wanted to stay here myself and if I came back to Morro Bay just for a weekend, I’d for sure stay here. Since I was on a longer road trip, though, I was trying to keep things a little cheaper.

Anyway, Rose’s Landing pretty much has everything I’d want from a hotel in Morro Bay. The building itself has a super charming seaside-town feel, it’s right on the waterfront with direct views over the bay, and the rooms are just really cute.

I would’ve loved waking up here, stepping out onto my private balcony and looking straight over the water. You’re basically right on the bay, which makes this a really cool option if you’re looking for a more elevated experience in Morro Bay.

Definitely worth checking out if you want something a little nicer!

2. Anderson Inn Morro Bay

As far as luxury hotels in Morro Bay go, I’d say Anderson Inn is probably the best alternative to Inn at Rose’s Landing.

I actually found the two hotels to be pretty similar in a lot of ways. They’re basically right next to each other, so the Anderson Inn is also right on the waterfront, with beautiful rooms and private balconies overlooking the bay.

The biggest difference, at least from what I could tell, is the design. I feel like the Anderson Inn has a slightly more modern look and feel, whereas Rose’s Landing has a little more of that classic seaside-town charm.

3. Harbor House Inn // This is Where I Actually Stayed

The Harbor House Inn is where I stayed myself, and even though it’s one of the more affordable hotels in Morro Bay, I had a fantastic experience here.

Would I have loved to stay at one of the two hotels above? Sure! But I just didn’t want to spend that much money, and honestly, I still had a great time here.

The Harbor House Inn is located a few blocks from the waterfront, but that didn’t bother me at all. It took us maybe 3–5 minutes to walk down to the waterfront, so it really wasn’t a big deal.

The hotel itself definitely felt a little more motel-style since the room entrances point outwards, but again, that didn’t bother me. I had a free parking space, our room was super spacious, and we even had a balcony with an ocean view, which was really cool.

Of course, the rooms are a little more basic compared to the two hotels above, but considering we paid well under $100 per night, I thought this was absolutely worth it.

4. Pacific Shores Inn

When I was looking for a good deal in Morro Bay, another hotel I found was the Pacific Shores Inn, which I also could’ve imagined staying at.

The rooms look recently renovated, and it’s in a similar location to the hotel we stayed at, just a couple of blocks from the waterfront. It’s also a motel-style inn, so overall, this looks like another really good value-for-money option.

The rooms don’t have balconies, but there is a large outdoor terrace where you can sit and hang out.

So if you’re looking for a no-frills, clean and more basic room while keeping the price as low as possible, I think the Pacific Shores Inn could be a really good choice.

5. Harbor Walk Inn Morro Bay

My last option in this guide is the HarborWalk Inn, which is another waterfront hotel in Morro Bay and has what I think is the perfect location.

You’re right by the water, you get ocean views, and all those amazing seafood restaurants are basically right on your doorstep.

The main reason I wanted to include the HarborWalk Inn, though, is because their king suite has such a cool balcony. I actually almost booked this place just because of the balcony!

It’s a really large balcony where multiple people can sit, and the views over the bay are incredible. If you’re planning a more relaxing or maybe even a romantic getaway to Morro Bay, I’d definitely check this one out.

I’d say the hotel I stayed at, Harbor House Inn, was probably the best value for money. It had everything we needed: a good location, spacious and clean rooms, a comfortable bed and a really affordable price.

Final Thoughts on the Best Hotels in Morro Bay California

All in all, I think Morro Bay is a fantastic little coastal town and kinda perfect for a romantic or relaxing weekend getaway.

The central part of Morro Bay, basically everything around Morro Rock and the waterfront, is pretty small and super walkable. So as long as you make sure to stay somewhere around here, the exact location doesn’t matter quite as much.

I’d honestly just pick a hotel that you like and that you’d actually enjoy staying in for the weekend.

I had a fantastic time staying at the Harbor House Inn, but I also don’t have super high standards when it comes to hotels. If I were coming back for a special occasion or a nicer weekend getaway, though, I’d for sure stay at Anderson Inn or Inn at Rose’s Landing.
