2 Days in Morro Bay California: My Weekend Itinerary in 2026

Morro Bay is a cute little and pretty quaint seaside town in Central California, and in my opinion, it’s one of the great destinations for a weekend getaway or as a stop on your California road trip.

I just spent 2 days in Morro Bay as part of my 1-month California road trip, and it was the perfect stop for me between Big Sur and Santa Barbara. It’s super relaxing, has great seafood, and there’s a ton of amazing wildlife around, including whales, sea lions and those super cute otters.

To help you guys out and give you a better idea of how you can spend a weekend in Morro Bay, I put together this guide based on exactly how I spent my time here, including the activities I did and some of the best things to do in Morro Bay.

How I Spent 2 Days in Morro Bay – My Quick Answer

One thing you should know from the get-go is that Morro Bay isn’t necessarily packed with activities and things to do, which is why I think 2 or maybe 3 days is more than enough here.

Most of the things we did here were pretty laid-back, but for me, that was kinda the whole point anyways. We had done so much hiking beforehand in Big Sur and Lake Tahoe that I really enjoyed just hanging out in Morro Bay for a few days and not having to constantly be somewhere.

We spent a lot of time around the waterfront, which is called the Embarcadero here in Morro Bay. This is where you’ll find all the amazing seafood restaurants, and I had some incredible fresh oysters and shrimp here. But it’s also where you’ll find Morro Rock, and where we saw tons of otters and sea lions from super close. So honestly, the waterfront is really where Morro Bay is happening.

The biggest activity we did here was for sure the whale-watching tour, where we got to see humpback whales, and I’d highly recommend doing one yourself. It was definitely a highlight for me, and the cool thing is that whale watching is available year-round. Depending on the season, you’ll have the chance to see different types of whales, so if you’re into wildlife like me, I’d definitely try to fit a tour into your trip.

Everything You Need to Know Before Visiting Morro Bay

Where You Should Stay in Morro Bay

We stayed at the Harbor House Inn, which was a cute little newly renovated hotel, and I can totally recommend it. It’s not super upscale or anything, but it was fantastic value for money and literally just a couple of blocks from the waterfront, where all the restaurants are. 

So it was super walkable, which I personally really like. We could just leave the car at the hotel and walk down to the waterfront whenever we wanted, which made everything really easy.

The Best Time to Visit Morro Bay

I visited in June, which wasn’t necessarily ideal (if you’ve heard of June Gloom). It was overcast quite a bit of the time, which was a little disappointing when I was hoping for some proper California sunshine.

However, I’ve heard great things about September and October. Apparently, temperatures during those months are surprisingly mild, and it’s also a great time for whale watching, especially if you’re hoping to see blue whales, humpbacks and potentially even orcas.

Where to See Otters & Sea Lions

Seeing the cute otters that live year-round in Morro Bay was for sure one of my highlights, and the same goes for the sea lions.

There are a few specific places where we had the best luck spotting them. For the otters, Morro Bay T Pier and Sea Otter Heaven were the two best locations from our experience, and both are marked on Google Maps.

For the sea lions, we had the best luck around Giovanni’s Fish Market and the Sea Lion Dock. And trust me, you’ll probably hear those guys before you even see them. They are LOUD!

My Favorite Places to Eat in Morro Bay

Morro Bay has some fantastic seafood restaurants, which makes total sense considering you’re basically right on the waterfront with fresh seafood coming in all the time.

I highly recommend the oysters at Tognazzini’s, and the calamari and popcorn shrimp at Giovanni’s Fish Market were also incredible.

My 2 Day Morro Bay Itinerary

Day 1: Spotting Otters & Sea Lions, Eating Fresh Oysters & Visiting Morro Rock

Morning – Spot Sea Lions and Otters in Morro Bay

Morning is probably the best time to try to see some of the local wildlife around Morro Bay. And I know “local wildlife” sounds a little dramatic, but I basically mean the sea lions and the super cute sea otters that live here in the bay.

Technically, you could see them pretty much anywhere around the waterfront, but after wandering around aimlessly for a while, we figured out that there are definitely some designated spots where you’ll have better luck.

For the sea otters, we had the best luck at Morro Bay T Pier, where we saw some playing right in front of us. They were so freaking cute! We also had really good luck at a location literally called Sea Otter Heaven, which I’ll make sure to tag on Google Maps for you guys.

For the sea lions, there’s a platform in the water close to Giovanni’s Fish Market where they usually hang out. But sometimes you get lucky and they come all the way up to the shore too, which is when you can get a really good look at them.

Midday – Freshly Shucked Oysters & a Stroll Around Morro Rock

For lunch, I’m for sure treating myself to a dozen freshly shucked oysters and a cold beer at one of the many seafood restaurants around the waterfront.

Personally, I think Tognazzini’s is one of the best places for this. The oysters were super fresh, they have draft beer, and the location is just awesome, with views over Morro Rock while you eat.

After lunch, it’s super easy to head over to Morro Rock and wander around the area. I’d definitely recommend doing a little post-lunch stroll, which takes maybe 45 minutes or so if you walk out toward the rock, around the area and back.

And this is another good opportunity to spot some otters and get a little closer to Morro Rock itself, which is pretty damn cool.

Morro Rock is actually a volcanic plug, meaning it’s hardened lava that was left inside the vent of an ancient volcano which I think is kinda cool!

Evening – Wander the Embarcadero & Have a Seafood Dinner

For the evening, I’m spending it in typical Morro Bay fashion: wandering around the waterfront and eating some more seafood.

This area is called the Embarcadero, and it’s where you’ll find most of the restaurants, shops and waterfront action in Morro Bay.

My favorite place for seafood is Giovanni’s Fish Market, which is basically a little hole-in-the-wall kind of place rather than some fancy sit-down restaurant. But the food is really good. Their calamari and popcorn shrimp were some of my favorites from the entire trip.

There are also plenty of nicer sit-down restaurants around here if that’s more your thing!

And while you’re walking around, I’d definitely stop by The Shell Shop. It’s one of my favorite places to pick up a souvenir, but even if you don’t want to buy anything, it’s just fun to walk around and look at all the shells, shark jaws and other random stuff they have inside.

Day 2: Whale Watching & Morro Bay State Park

Morning – Join a Whale-Watching Tour

One absolute must-do in Morro Bay is for sure going on a whale-watching tour. We booked our tour through Viator, which is what I usually use for tours, but there are also plenty of local companies you can book directly with, like Morro Bay Whale Watching.

Most tours are half-day tours. Ours started at around 9 AM, and it was awesome. We had fantastic weather, the guides and crew were super fun, and we got to see a bunch of dolphins as well as humpback whales!

From my understanding, the time of year makes a big difference in what you can see around here, but there’s also a chance of spotting orcas and blue whales, which would obviously be pretty damn cool.

Whale watching was definitely one of the highlights of my time in Morro Bay, so if you’re spending two days here, I’d absolutely try to fit a tour into your itinerary.

Afternoon – Explore Morro Bay State Park

After a long morning out on the water, we headed down south to Morro Bay State Park, which I think is one of the most beautiful areas around Morro Bay.

It has a huge marshy landscape right by the ocean, and it’s just incredibly calm and peaceful. We went for a really long walk along the boardwalk, which runs right through the marshes, and there were barely any other people around.

There were loads of birds though, so it was also a really nice place for bird watching. Honestly, after spending the whole morning out on the ocean, it was the perfect way to slow things down a little bit.

We basically just walked around, watched the birds, enjoyed the views and relaxed for the rest of the afternoon. And after a pretty busy morning, I really didn’t need much more than that.

Is Morro Bay Worth Visiting?

Yes, for sure! I really liked the quieter and calmer atmosphere here. It’s not super touristy, but you still get beautiful nature, tons of wildlife and some seriously good seafood.

What Is There to Do in Morro Bay?

My favorite activity in Morro Bay was definitely whale watching, but I also really enjoyed trying to spot the sea lions and otters around the bay. And of course, you can’t come here without taking a stroll around the famous Morro Rock.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Morro Bay?

In my opinion, September and October are probably the best months to visit Morro Bay. You might not expect it, but temperatures are surprisingly mild around this time of year, and it’s also a great time for whale watching.

Is There Good Seafood in Morro Bay?

Absolutely! Morro Bay has plenty of seafood restaurants right along the waterfront, with fresh seafood coming in all the time. I highly recommend checking out Morro Bay Oyster Company if you want some of the freshest oysters you can imagine.

Absolutely! The otters live here year-round, so you’ve got a pretty good chance of seeing them while you’re visiting. From my experience, I’d recommend heading to Morro Bay T Pier or Sea Otter Heaven for some of the best chances of spotting them.

Final Thoughts on My 2-Day Morro Bay Itinerary

I can only say that Morro Bay is such a fantastic place for a weekend getaway, and I really do think 2 days is the perfect amount of time here.

With so many other popular places around San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Big Sur, I feel like Morro Bay is definitely the most honest and authentic, in a way.

It never felt overly touristy to me or like it was trying to be something it wasn’t. It’s just a really nice little seaside town where you can slow down and enjoy yourself.

I truly enjoyed my weekend of long strolls by the water, trying to spot otters and sea lions here and there, going whale watching and eating good seafood. And honestly, I didn’t really need much more than that anyways.
