Morro Bay in Central California is a beautiful little seaside town that I honestly had zero expectations for. I didn’t know much about it before visiting, but it ended up really surprising me, and I actually loved it.

With some cities in California being super busy and chaotic at times, it was really nice to slow down a little bit here in Morro Bay. The town is super quaint, quiet, and just has a very different pace to it.

I spent 3 full days in Morro Bay, exploring the little town, trying a bunch of seafood, and yes, I also got to see the famous sea otters here!

So, if you’re wondering “Is Morro Bay worth visiting?”, I’ve put together this guide to give you a better idea of what it’s actually like. I’ll go over what I loved about Morro Bay, what I didn’t like as much, and a few of my favorite things to do while you’re here.

Is Morro Bay Worth Visiting? My Quick Answer

I’ll give you my quick answer here so you don’t have to read through this whole guide if you don’t want to: yes, Morro Bay is worth visiting, but it depends on what you’re looking for.

I loved Morro Bay because it felt less touristy and a little more simple than some of the other places we visited along the California coast. I loved all the seafood restaurants, the waterfront, and all the amazing wildlife right there in the harbor. Overall, I had such a calm and relaxing few days here, and I’d totally come back again for that.

It’s also a fantastic stop on a California road trip, especially if you’re driving along the coast and visiting places like Big Sur and Santa Barbara.

I do want to mention, though, that Morro Bay is very sleepy and pretty low-key. There just aren’t as many things going on here, and there are quite a few other places along the coast, like Big Sur, Santa Barbara, and Carmel, that I personally found more impressive.

So, if you asked me to choose between Santa Barbara and Morro Bay, I’d pick Santa Barbara any day of the week.

But if you’re looking for a more relaxing weekend trip, or you’re doing a larger California road trip along Highway 1, I think Morro Bay is a fantastic stop for a night or two.

What I Loved About Morro Bay California

1. Less Touristy and More Calm

I just loved the overall atmosphere here. After spending some time in San Francisco beforehand, I really enjoyed being able to slow down and just walk along the waterfront without having to deal with huge crowds of tourists everywhere.

It was calm, it was quiet, and with the blue skies and fresh sea breeze we had during our time in Morro Bay, the whole trip just turned into a really relaxing few days.

2. The Wildlife

I’m just such a child when it comes to wildlife. I get way overly excited about seeing animals, and Morro Bay definitely delivered.

The Morro Bay area is pretty well known for two things when it comes to wildlife: sea otters and sea lions. And honestly, you’re pretty much guaranteed to see both while you’re here.

We saw plenty of each, and I feel like my photos really don’t do them justice, but it was just so cute watching them swim around in the harbor. I could’ve stood there watching them for hours.

3. The Fresh Seafood, Especially the Oysters

The seafood in Morro Bay was just so damn good, and honestly, I’m not sure it gets much fresher than this.

The first highlight for me was the oysters at Tognazzini’s. They were so fresh and delicious, and sitting outside in the sun with a plate of oysters and a cold beer was basically the perfect afternoon.

I also had the popcorn shrimp at Giovanni’s Fish Market, which I’m not exaggerating when I say might have been the best popcorn shrimp I’ve ever had. Definitely order those if you’re here!

4. An Amazing Location for Day Trips and Road Trips

Morro Bay is also in such a convenient location, especially if you’re doing a California road trip.

You can easily do what we did and include it as a stop along the California coast. It’s right along Highway 1, so if you’re planning on visiting places like Big Sur, Santa Barbara, or Los Angeles, Morro Bay fits into the route really easily.

You’ve also got San Luis Obispo nearby, as well as a whole bunch of wineries around the area, so there are plenty of options for day trips if you want to use Morro Bay as a little home base for a few days.

What I Didn’t Like So Much About Morro Bay

1. Sometimes It Felt a Little Too Quiet

I know this sounds a little silly because earlier I was talking about how much I loved how quiet Morro Bay was, but there were definitely some moments when it felt a little too quiet.

Especially in the evenings, Morro Bay is very sleepy. There isn’t really much of a nightlife scene, and once you’ve had dinner and walked around the waterfront, things get pretty quiet.

Ultimately, I’m totally fine with that. I don’t need to go on a big night out every time I travel somewhere. But it’s just something you should adjust your expectations for when visiting Morro Bay.

2. The Industrial Architecture

Okay, this one genuinely bothered me!

So, Morro Bay has this beautiful volcanic Morro Rock sitting right out in the ocean, gorgeous beaches, a cute little seaside town, and all this beautiful coastal scenery…

And then they decided to build this massive power plant-looking thing basically right in the middle of it all.

I’m sure there’s a perfectly good reason for it being there, but from a purely aesthetic point of view, I hated it. It just completely interrupts the panorama for me.

You’ll be standing there looking at Morro Rock, the ocean, the beaches, and the cute little harbor, and then… boom, giant industrial structure.

My Favorite Things to Do in Morro Bay

1. Spot the Sea Lions and Otters in Morro Bay

Of course, number one on my list of the coolest things to do in Morro Bay is trying to spot the sea otters and sea lions. 

For the otters, we had the best luck at Morro Bay T Pier and Sea Otter Heaven. Both are marked on Google Maps, and from our experience, they were probably the best places to see the otters.

For the sea lions, we had the best luck around Giovanni’s Fish Market. There’s a huge platform out in the water where the sea lions usually hang out, and you can usually spot quite a few of them there.

Of course, if you want to get even closer, you can also rent a kayak and paddle around the harbor.

2. Take a Day Trip to San Luis Obispo

One of my favorite little towns in California is definitely San Luis Obispo. I actually hadn’t heard of it before coming here, but I’m really glad we decided to visit because it’s such a cool little town.

It’s small, but not too small, and there are plenty of nice restaurants, cafes, and bars around town. It also has that really cool old-school California charm that I loved.

It’s a pretty historic town right in the middle of wine country too, so it’s also a great place to base yourself if you want to check out some of the vineyards in the area.

3. Walk to Morro Rock

The iconic landmark here in Morro Bay is, of course, Morro Rock. It’s this huge volcanic boulder sitting right in the water just in front of the town.

It was kind of weird seeing it for the first time because it almost feels completely out of place. You’ve got this cute little seaside town, the beach, and then suddenly there’s this massive volcanic rock sitting right offshore.

But that’s also what makes it so cool. It’s a really nice area to walk around, and we went for a little walk out toward Morro Rock after lunch, which was a great way to spend an afternoon.

4. Visit the Shell Shop

One of the more random and quirky things to do in Morro Bay is visit The Shell Shop. And yes, you guessed it, it’s a shop that sells shells.

They have everything from tiny little shells to absolutely humongous ones, and it’s actually pretty fun just walking around and looking at all of them.

But what I thought was even cooler were the real shark jawbones hanging on the walls. And holy shit, some of these things are huge!

Yes, there are! Morro Bay is home to some of the cutest sea otters, and you’re pretty much guaranteed to see them while you’re here.

Honestly, my heart melted when I saw them sleeping on their backs in the water. They’re just so freaking cute.

How Many Days in Morro Bay Do I Need?

I do think 1–3 nights is plenty. If you’re on a road trip, it’s totally fine to just stop for one night, explore for a morning, and then head on to your next destination.

But you could also easily spend a whole weekend here if you just want to relax, walk around the waterfront, and eat good seafood.

Where Should I Stay in Morro Bay?

When I book a hotel in Morro Bay, I make sure to stay somewhere close to Morro Rock. Not necessarily because you need to be right next to the rock, but because this puts you close to the waterfront and many of the restaurants.

I stayed at Harbor House Inn, which is a fantastic and affordable place to stay in Morro Bay.

Final Thoughts on Visiting Morro Bay

All in all, I think Morro Bay is a fantastic little escape. I stayed here for 3 days during my California road trip, but if you live somewhere nearby, it would also make for a really fun weekend trip.

I loved how quaint it was, I loved all the wildlife, and I especially loved getting to see the otters and sea lions just hanging out around the harbor. And if you’re into seafood, you’ve absolutely gotta try some while you’re here, especially the oysters!

Lastly, I also want to mention that Morro Bay is significantly cheaper than some of the other places nearby. Comparing hotel prices between Morro Bay and Santa Barbara, for example, I think Santa Barbara was at least three times more expensive when I was looking. So, if you want a more affordable California coastal getaway, Morro Bay is definitely the way to go.
